- My 'White Moonlight' First Love Came Back, but I Don't Love her Anymore
- Chapter 30 - I Like Yue Qi
Zhou Wanyan’s first reaction was to hide the gift, as if she were terrified of being seen. Her tongue felt knotted, and her words became incoherent. “I was just going downstairs to take out the trash.”
“Why are you guys here?”
Gao Yao was confused, assuming Zhou Wanyan was simply so surprised that she had become tongue-tied. “Who are you trying to fool? Since when does taking out the trash take over three hours?”
“Besides, did you manage to find a gift in the trash can?”
Gao Yao took a step forward, having also spotted the gift in Zhou Wanyan’s hand. She teased with a grin, “Come on, tell us who sent it. And where did you go for so long? What do you think, Luo Luo?”
Luo Yuening said nothing and turned around to walk toward the sofa. Gao Yao placed the cake in Zhou Wanyan’s hands and whispered, “You are really wasting Luo Luo’s effort. She made this cake with her own hands.”
A flash of shock crossed Zhou Wanyan’s face, followed by a wave of joy. She tried to suppress her inner delight, but the irrepressible curve of her lips betrayed her true feelings. Holding the cake carefully, she walked over to Luo Yuening.
Seeing her approach, Luo Yuening turned her head the other way, clearly signaling her refusal to acknowledge her.
Zhou Wanyan said softly, “Ning Ning, the cake you made is beautiful. I cannot wait to eat it. Can I blow out the candles first?”
The corners of Luo Yuening’s eyes were tinged with red. She tried to sound indifferent. “Blow them out if you want. What does it have to do with me?”
But as soon as she spoke, her voice was thick with a nasal quality. She bit her lower lip hard, her eyes full of frustration, yet the slight tremble in her voice exposed her internal sadness.
Zhou Wanyan’s gaze grew increasingly tender. She sat on the sofa and stole a glance at Luo Yuening, taking in her flustered expression.
“This gift was sent by a girl whose medical treatment I donated to once.”
“Ning Ning, I wanted to spend my birthday with you today. I sent you a message, but you did not reply.”
Luo Yuening stole a glance back at Zhou Wanyan. Seeing that she was telling the truth, her jealousy slowly faded, replaced by endless sweetness.
She explained awkwardly, “I wanted to give you a surprise. Quickly, make a wish before the candles go out.”
Gao Yao sat on the side armchair, silently watching the drama unfold. She had already had her fill of the public display of affection. She privately gave Zhou Wanyan a thumbs up. Who would have thought that seven years later, the only person who could handle Luo Yuening was still Zhou Wanyan?
It felt like she could see the end of the story already. No matter how cold and elegant Luo Yuening acted in public, she was completely under Zhou Wanyan’s thumb. Gao Yao suddenly felt like a massive, unwanted third wheel.
While Zhou Wanyan had her eyes closed to make a wish, Luo Yuening frantically winked at Gao Yao. Leave, now!
Gao Yao curled her lip in protest. Fine, all for the sake of a friend’s love life.
Zhou Wanyan’s birthday wish was: I hope she is always here.
She opened her eyes. The flickering candles reflected in her pupils like rising hope. Gao Yao crossed her arms and laughed. “What did you wish for? You look so happy.”
Although Luo Yuening did not show it, her gaze kept drifting toward Zhou Wanyan. Hearing this, Zhou Wanyan instinctively looked at her. No one but Zhou Wanyan knew exactly how much turmoil was hidden in that single look.
“I cannot say. If I say it, it will not come true.”
Gao Yao’s gaze swept meaningfully between the two of them. “Fine, keep your secrets. I suddenly have something to do, so I am leaving. No need to see me out.”
Zhou Wanyan naturally placed the first slice of cake in front of Luo Yuening. “Have a piece before you go.”
Seeing the sliced cake on the table, Gao Yao reached for a piece.
Zhou Wanyan said, “Wait.”
The second slice was placed precisely into Gao Yao’s hand, accompanied by the words, “This one is yours.”
Gao Yao took an aggressive bite of the cake as a silent protest. Luo Yuening thoughtfully handed her a tissue. As Gao Yao wiped her mouth, she sighed. “Luo Luo is still the thoughtful one. Zhou Wanyan, I cannot believe I helped you cover up for skipping class back in high school.”
Zhou Wanyan’s lips curved into a gentle, rippling smile. “Who told you to be the most loyal person at Haicheng First High?”
Gao Yao waved her hand. “Everyone knows that.”
“Anyway, I am off. You two enjoy your chat. I will give you your gift tomorrow.”
What do you do when both of your friends value romance over friendship? Zhou Wanyan did not even bother to be polite; she just let her leave. Was she really that bright of a lightbulb?
After Gao Yao left, the sound of heartbeats became exceptionally clear in the quiet room. Zhou Wanyan turned off the lights in the other rooms, leaving only a warm lamp by the sofa. Their gazes seemed to be connected by an invisible thread, drawn together.
As their eyes met, a tide of emotion flowed between them.
“Want a drink?” Zhou Wanyan asked.
Luo Yuening gave a small nod. While Zhou Wanyan went to get the wine, Luo Yuening took out the gift she had not given yet. Just looking at the exquisite black box encrusted with a priceless sapphire, one could guess the item inside was worth a fortune.
Zhou Wanyan asked softly, “Is this wine okay?”
Luo Yuening replied, “Mhm.”
The red wine was poured slowly into crystal glasses, glowing under the lamp.
Zhou Wanyan said, “I did not expect you to still remember my birthday.”
Luo Yuening lowered her eyes, her voice soft. “Gao Yao remembered. She told me to come.”
Zhou Wanyan pursed her lips, a flash of disappointment crossing her eyes.
Luo Yuening added, “This is for you. I just bought it casually.”
With that, a black box appeared in Zhou Wanyan’s hand. The box was wrapped in fine lambskin. Zhou Wanyan’s breathing grew shallow, tinged with nervousness. As she opened the box, a diamond necklace that looked as if it were woven from stars and the moon came into view, radiating a soft glow.
Zhou Wanyan’s gentle eyes shimmered. “Ning Ning, thank you.”
Luo Yuening lowered her head slightly to hide her shyness, her lips curving up despite her feigned indifference. “It is nothing. I just bought it on a whim after I found out it was your birthday.”
“Do you need me to help you put it on?”
“Ning Ning, you really do know me best. You bought exactly what I like even on a whim,” Zhou Wanyan laughed.
Luo Yuening then realized that while she was being shy, Zhou Wanyan had already put the necklace on herself. Luo Yuening’s brow furrowed and she bit her lower lip, feeling both annoyed and frustrated.
Could she not have waited for me?
She was not fast when she should have been, yet she was faster than anyone when she should not have been.
“I am glad you like it.”
Zhou Wanyan replied, “Of course I like it. I am going to wear it forever.”
Hearing this, Luo Yuening’s annoyance vanished instantly. Fine, I will forgive you.
Luo Yuening asked tentatively, “What if your girlfriend gives you a new one in the future?”
Zhou Wanyan thought seriously for a moment. “As for a girlfriend, I am not considering it for now. I might not want to date for the rest of my life.”
The aftermath of her last relationship was too intense; she did not want to endure it again. Hearing this, Luo Yuening felt both happy and sad. If Zhou Wanyan did not want to date, she would not have a chance, but if Zhou Wanyan did want to date, what if someone else beat her to it?
Analyzing it this way, she seemed to have no advantage at all, especially since she had been rejected once before.
Luo Yuening asked, “If you do not date for the rest of your life, won’t you grow old alone?”
Zhou Wanyan laughed softly. “I am the one growing old alone, not you. Why are you so worried?”
Then, as if she had realized something, her tone became surprised. “Are you in a relationship? Are you feeling guilty because I am not dating, so you are testing me?”
Luo Yuening forced a fake smile, softening her voice. “Our Yan Yan has loved to fantasize since she was a child. What are we going to do with her?”
Zhou Wanyan said, “Stop praising me, or I will get a big head.”
Luo Yuening then dropped her smile. “I am being serious. Stop joking.”
Zhou Wanyan’s slender fingers idly toyed with the rim of her glass. “I am being serious too. I really have no plans to date.”
“I feel like you are the one who wants to be in a relationship?”
Luo Yuening’s tone was casual, but she stole a glance at Zhou Wanyan, trying to catch a flicker of emotion on her face.
“Yes, you caught me. Do you have any suitable friends to introduce to me?”
The hand Zhou Wanyan was using to trace circles on the rim of her glass paused. An indescribable bitterness began to spread through her heart. She did not understand where this sudden surge of emotion came from.
“I do. Quite a few. It just depends on what type you are looking for.”
The two of them had somehow entered a contest of wills. Their words were sharp, each carrying a trace of irritation. Seeing this, Luo Yuening thought Zhou Wanyan sincerely wanted to introduce her to a girlfriend.
“Someone prettier than me, taller than me, from a better family than me, with a better figure than me, and better stamina. I do not like pillow princesses!”
Zhou Wanyan replied, “I am sorry, but I do not have anyone that comprehensive in my social circle. No one even meets the first requirement. But I will keep an eye out for you. If I find someone who meets your criteria, I will help you get their contact information.”
However, all Luo Yuening heard was Zhou Wanyan praising her as the prettiest.
“There is no rush. Just remember to think of your sister here if you meet someone suitable. Also, I will accept your compliment about me being pretty.”
The smile vanished from Zhou Wanyan’s eyes. “It is not that easy to find someone suitable. You should keep an eye out yourself. I am afraid they will not be good enough for you.”
Zhou Wanyan’s words clearly contradicted what she had just said.
Luo Yuening said with a half-smile, “Well, anyway, the person I told you I liked not long ago broke up. I have a chance again. But you have to help me. I have drawn up a few plans. You have to help me see if they are workable.”
Zhou Wanyan’s voice rose. “You already have someone you like, yet you asked me to find someone for you just now? Luo Yuening, what are you trying to do?”
Luo Yuening raised an eyebrow, picked up her crystal glass, and took an elegant sip. She said languidly, “What is there to be excited about? I only just remembered that she broke up. Just tell me if you will help or not.”
After a few seconds of silence, Zhou Wanyan’s voice carried a hint of reluctance. “I will help. But you have to tell me who you like first. Otherwise, I will not help. Who knows if this person you like even exists?”
Luo Yuening gave Zhou Wanyan a mock angry glare. “Zhou Wanyan! You are so annoying.”
Zhou Wanyan said, “Alright, alright, I was wrong. Tell me, who is the person you like?”
Luo Yuening lost her usual arrogance. Her eyes were full of determination, and her words were saturated with an immeasurable amount of love.
“I like Yue Qi.”
