My Weekend Lover Turned Out To Be My Boss - Chapter 99
Chapter 99: Villain M · “If”
“Send that dead dog back where he came from!”
“Is he really that scary?”
Guan Shuyun was shouting from behind the butler’s back. It was quite strange; after letting Duo Duo (the Golden Retriever) into the Guan estate, he didn’t bite anyone—except for barking relentlessly at Guan Shuyun. I held the leash and whistled; Duo Duo trotted back to my feet and lay down. I clipped the leash and teased her, “Throw a shoe over here and let him sniff it. Maybe he’ll memorize the scent and stop barking at you.”
“Going to the Lan house really gave you an unexpected ‘harvest.’ You could have brought back anything, but you just had to bring this thing back!”
Guan Shuyun mustered some courage and slowly edged toward me. Seeing her approach, Duo Duo immediately let out an alert, low growl. I tugged his collar and patted his head. “No biting!”
Eventually, Guan Shuyun had someone bring out some ham sausages. Under the temptation of gourmet food, Duo Duo was easily conquered. Guan Shuyun fed him while stroking his head, not forgetting to grumble: “What a spineless fellow, won over so easily. When Lan Feiyi set the dog on me back then, why didn’t I think of throwing food?”
“Try it. Ask him to give you his paw.”
Guan Shuyun didn’t believe the dog would listen to her, so she asked dubiously, “Duo Duo, give me your hand.”
Duo Duo obediently placed his paw in her palm. Guan Shuyun suddenly beamed like a three-year-old. “He… he actually understands human speech!”
“Now try asking him to sit.”
Guan Shuyun cleared her throat and gave a serious command: “Stupid dog, sit!”
“His name is Duo Duo! Xi-Duo-Duo!”
“Fine. Xi-Duo-Duo, sit!”
Duo Duo adjusted his body and sat firmly. Without needing my instruction, Guan Shuyun immediately commanded, “Lie down. Try lying down.”
The moment she spoke, Duo Duo lay down submissively, resting his head on his paws without moving. Guan Shuyun looked like she had discovered a new continent. She gasped, “You’ve got some skills! Raising a child and training a dog—are you some kind of treasure woman?”
I handed the leash to her. “Actually, I was thinking that since my injuries are healed, I must return to work. You’ll be bored at home with no one to keep you company, so play with Duo Duo.”
Hearing this, Guan Shuyun froze. Then she threw the leash back at me and yelled indignantly, “I wanted you to accompany me, but you bring me a dog instead? Why are you elevating a dog to such a status? I don’t want it.”
“Hey! You woman, you’re really hard to please!”
“I don’t care. If I don’t go to the office for a day, don’t you dream of enjoying yourself!”
“Are you a devil? So wicked!”
Guan Shuyun looked smug, mimicking my tone: “I’ve been a devil for more than a day or two. Wickedness is my virtue. Die of anger! Die of anger!”
I helplessly led Duo Duo around the courtyard. The butler was thoughtful; he had someone set up a temporary kennel in the garden and prepared dog food. Guan Shuyun admired Duo Duo’s new home with me. “The Guan family isn’t stingy. Since we can host you so grandly, your dog can share the glory.”
She knelt down and tapped Duo Duo’s nose, threatening him: “Let’s see if you dare bite me on my territory again. Be careful or I’ll have you turned into dog meat stew and let your owner eat it without knowing!”
“You’re truly evil!”
“I’m a devil. If I’m not a bit evil, wouldn’t I be letting down the label you gave me?”
…
The night before the gala for Qiao Xin’s new company, I received an email from Sister Hong. It was a very comprehensive list of names. I pondered the figures on the list, wondering how they had managed to get on such good terms with Lan Feichun in such a short time. I uploaded the list to the website; with this data, the omnipotent Old A would quickly analyze the targets that needed tracking.
The night of the gala arrived. Guan Shuyun’s injuries were mostly healed. I still wasn’t fond of these events—until Lan Feichun appeared in the hall with Sister Lian. I was puzzled as to why Sister Hong was nowhere to be seen. Soon, Guan, Qiao, and Li were huddled together discussing business.
I deliberately approached Lan Feichun and Sister Lian while they were taking a break at the buffet table. As I picked up a piece of cake, I remarked nonchalantly, “Girlfriend? She’s quite beautiful.”
Lan Feichun brought me a glass of champagne and chatted: “This kind of occasion is the least suitable for bringing a girlfriend. Do I look like the type of person who dates? She’s just a date I brought along.”
“Saying that in front of her is quite cruel,” I noted.
Sister Lian acted as if she didn’t know me at all, clinging to Lan Feichun’s arm coquettishly. “How annoying.”
I said sensibly, “I’ll leave you to it.”
Seeing me say this, Sister Lian quickly hugged Lan Feichun, forcing his back toward me. I looked back at her; she gave me a meaningful look. I smiled and walked to a corner. Soon, the contact person for Sister Lian and Sister Hong called me: “Miss You, please don’t worry about Sister Hong. She wasn’t part of today’s arrangement.”
“Any new progress?”
“As far as I know, Lan Feichun’s first batch of goods has already been unloaded at the port—no less than ten containers. It’s a huge volume. If he wants to move the goods, he can’t do it in one or two trips. Now we need to find out where his warehouse is. Once we know the location, we’ll have much more leverage.”
“Thank you for your hard work.”
I hung up and checked Old A’s site for updates. Disappointingly, there was no news. However, knowing Lan Feichun’s new moves meant today wasn’t a wasted trip.
“What are you doing here all by yourself?”
Guan Shuyun approached me, snatched the champagne from my hand, and replaced it with a glass of juice. I teased, “You’re quite considerate.”
“Not everyone gets to enjoy this kind of consideration. You’d better cherish it.”
“I do cherish it! Look at me—I eat your food, stay in your house, and I’ve even tied my dog in your big garden. You tell me if I cherish it or not.”
“Did Lan Feiyi ever tell you that your mouth is too slick?”
“She didn’t say it was bad. She said my smooth-talking face was just begging to be kissed.”
“Are you hinting at something?”
I held her waist, pulling her closer, then smiled and shook my head. “I’m too afraid of you for that.”
She hooked my chin, teasing, “What should I do? You’re getting more and more interesting.”
“What should I do? You’re about to fall in love with me. I’m so scared!”
“Can’t you just go along with me?”
I set down my glass and led Guan Shuyun to the garden outside the banquet hall. Under the dim lights, I said helplessly, “I just don’t get it. You said it yourself before—someone like me and someone like you standing together just doesn’t fit. Why do you insist on us being together now? Aren’t you slapping your own face?”
Guan Shuyun grew indignant, hands on her hips. “You Feifan! You dare bring up the past to me!”
“See? There’s your true nature. You start a fight at the slightest disagreement!”
“You!”
“Why don’t you try to argue back with some logic?”
Guan Shuyun immediately switched to a pleasant face, smiling as she linked her arm with mine and leaned on my shoulder. “I won’t fight with you, okay?”
“Guan Shuyun, you should find a man and get married already. You’re becoming an advanced-age mother!”
“What if I say it has to be you?”
“I can’t exactly have children with you.”
“How about this: you stay with me, and I’ll have them for you.”
“Cough, cough… Do you think you’re a little hen, laying eggs by yourself?”
“I’m giving you a lot of face here! Why can’t you be with me? Is Lan Feiyi still in your heart? Hmph, I knew you haven’t let her go!”
“Devil, let’s go home. Wash up and go to sleep—you can have everything you want in your dreams.”
…
Everything was progressing step-by-step. I only needed to stay safely by Guan Shuyun’s side and wait for the good news from Old A and Sister Hong. But things happened too suddenly. Since returning to the company, I had piles of work to handle every day. Today was no exception—another late night.
I checked the time; it was almost midnight. Curiously, Guan Shuyun hadn’t called to urge me home today. I packed up my desk and left the office. While waiting for the elevator, I checked Old A’s site and saw an update icon. I opened it immediately.
The source of the imported goods Lan Feichun provided to Qiao Xin comes from a man named Nian Buhe. This man is dangerous; on the surface he deals in antiques, but secretly he runs underground banks and gambling dens. He does anything illegal and has a massive underworld network. He is the one who brokered the deal for Lan Feichun. It seems Qiao Xin and Lan Feichun haven’t found a satisfactory warehouse yet, so the goods are still at the port. I can tell you for certain: the goods are all fakes. The files are ready; just say the word and I will send them to the Lan family.
Also, I don’t know what Li Shuhua said to the second Lan brother (Lan Feichun), but they have been moving frequently in private lately. It’s likely about the Lan family shares. Please stay alert.
Feichun? Why would he go to see Li Shuhua? I pondered this as I stepped into the elevator, leaving a message: Send the files to Lan Feiyi immediately. Remember… don’t let her know they came from me. Continue investigating Lan Feichun and Li Shuhua.
Reaching the parking garage, I fished out my keys and whistled as I walked to my car. Before I had gone two steps, a Buick business van roared out from the side, blocking my path. Sensing something was wrong, I stepped back two paces, ready to turn and run—only to find that several men had suddenly appeared to block my retreat.
Several people stepped out of the car. The leader was chewing on a cigarette butt with a scar across his face—a veteran thug of the underworld. He said arrogantly, “Our boss invites you to have some tea at his place. Why are you running? Grab her and get her in the car!”
The man waved his hand, and the others surrounded me, pushing and shoving until they forced me into the van….
