Chapter 88: Villain B · “The Thief’s Journey”
It was a rare moment of solitude, a time to enjoy a sliver of peace. I walked to the floor-to-ceiling window, lit a cigarette, and stared emotionlessly at the world outside. I could see my own reflection in the glass; with the cigarette between my lips, I reached out and tapped the “me” on the window.
“Early spring is chilling,” I muttered to myself. “But when it comes to being thin and cold, nothing beats the human heart.”
Suddenly, my phone rang, displaying a string of strange numbers. I answered but remained silent. The person on the other end was quiet for a long time before speaking, their voice masked by a distorter: “Hello, Ms. You. I am ready. President Jian specifically instructed me not to cause you any trouble. To avoid suspicion, all tracking information will be updated in real-time on a webpage. I’ve texted you the link and instructions.”
Confidentiality was paramount. Before hanging up, I made one more request: “Can you do me a favor?”
“Please, go ahead.”
“I want information on Lan Feichun. By the way, how should I address you?”
“Just call me Old A. I’ll update the data on the webpage later. Don’t worry, the page is encrypted; only you can see it.”
“Thank you for your hard work.”
Just as I hung up, the secretary knocked on the door: “Ms. You, President Guan is looking for you.”
Back in Guan Shuyun’s office, Li Shuhua and her eldest son had already left. Only Qiao Xin and Guan Shuyun remained, leaning back in their chairs and playing with their phones. I leaned against a chair back and teased, “Those small media outlets and tabloids just keep passing the same stories around. Your long-planned revenge made a little noise and then stalled. This isn’t fun at all!”
Qiao Xin rolled her eyes. “This is just the beginning. What’s the rush? Lan Feiyi’s lack of movement isn’t because she’s not afraid; it’s because she hasn’t processed yet who it was that sold her out so thoroughly.”
Guan Shuyun remained silent. She glanced at me and then looked away. Qiao Xin checked the time and said in a high-pitched voice, “I’m in a good mood, and I have a beauty appointment. I’m off~”
I didn’t bother responding. Once she vanished from my sight, I let out a snort and shook my head. Guan Shuyun poured me a cup of tea. Sensing something off, I stared at her blankly. “What’s wrong with you? You’ve been acting strange since this morning.”
“I wanted to ask you—now that you’ve sold Lan Feiyi out like this, do you truly not feel a single pang of heartache?”
“Why should I? What is she to me?”
“Fine. Since you’re so resolute, I have a task for you. Go to Jieshi Zhuoyue (Phoebe’s company) to deliver a set of documents. I want you to have a face-to-face conversation with her. Do you dare?”
“What is there to be afraid of?”
“I heard the place is swarmed with reporters. Go on, then. Let us enjoy the show.”
…
I drove all the way to the Lan Building. Sure enough, I could see a crowd of people gathered at the entrance from far away. I took a detour directly into the parking garage, only to find reporters blocking that way too. As soon as I got out of the car and walked toward the elevator, I was spotted…
“It’s You Feifan!” “Ms. You, what was your motive for this exposure?” “Ms. You, why have you returned to the Lan Group?” “What is your purpose for meeting President Lan at a critical moment like this?”
The reporters swarmed like bees. I stepped into the elevator, and as they tried to follow, I didn’t care for pleasantries. I shoved the lead reporter out, responding impatiently, “There aren’t that many ‘whys.’ I have no comment.”
The elevator doors closed, and finally, there was silence. I knew what I was about to face: it could be a verbal lashing or a cold shoulder. Either way, it wouldn’t be pleasant. But since Guan Shuyun gave me the chance, I naturally wanted to see Phoebe—not to explain anything, but simply because I wanted to see her.
When I stepped out, Secretary Du was already standing guard at the door, likely to block all harassment. Seeing me, she froze, and then her face twisted into a predictable look of loathing. “What are you doing here? You are not welcome.”
She had been Phoebe’s most capable assistant for years. Professionally and personally, her hostility was justified. I waved the documents in my hand and stated my purpose: “Delivering important files on behalf of President Guan.”
“President Lan is busy and does not see guests without appointments. Give me the files, and you can leave.”
I ignored her and said solemnly, “These are important corporate cooperation documents. I must hand them to President Lan personally.”
At that moment, the office door opened. Phoebe stood there, looking at me with exhaustion. “Let her in.”
I strode past Secretary Du and straight into the office. Phoebe returned to her desk and took a sip of coffee. She stared at the documents in my hand and smiled helplessly. “I know these documents don’t actually require my review. Guan Shuyun sent you to watch me suffer, didn’t she?”
I sat down on the reception sofa without invitation, tossed the files aside, and replied coldly, “Yes. I just came to see if you’re as miserable as we imagined. But it seems the powerful President Lan remains as steady as a mountain even in the face of a crisis. Truly disappointing.”
Phoebe kept her back to me. She was silent for a very long time. Eventually, whether it was anger or disappointment, it all dissolved into a weary sigh. She spoke slowly: “You did what you wanted to do, and you’ve joined a powerful side. If making an enemy of me brings you relief, I won’t blame you.”
I clenched my fists. I would have preferred her to scold me, hate me, or ignore me, rather than hear words like these. This wasn’t the result I wanted. I jumped up, rushed to her, grabbed her arm, and roared fiercely, “Why are you like this?! Aren’t you the type to seek revenge for even the smallest slight? Why don’t you curse me? Break off with me! Avenge yourself! What is this now? Trying to win people over with virtue?”
Phoebe remained calm, refusing to even raise her voice. The light had vanished from her eyes, and her expression wasn’t one of heartlessness, but of utter indifference. She brushed my hand away. “Once, I caused you to lose a stage, lose a lover, and bear a false accusation. Now, you’ve trapped me in a media storm. We’re even. We owe each other nothing now. Between people, if there isn’t love or hate, there is only the status of strangers. You were the person I loved most, my weakness, and the root of what I couldn’t let go of. Now, my heart is colder than if it were dead. Since we couldn’t part on good terms, then letting the fate end completely isn’t bad either. As far as I’m concerned, my Feifan is already dead.”
I was amused by her words. I laughed until tears came out, sniffing and wiping them away. “Fine. We’re even. That’s great. Lan Feiyi, I don’t hate you anymore, but you will never know… you don’t know…”
I didn’t finish. I simply left quietly. The current You Feifan knew exactly what she was doing, could calculate the results of all actions, and accepted the price that came with them. A stray dog has to act like a stray dog. A mad dog bites without looking at who it’s biting—it just bites whoever it catches…
The media storm caused the Lan Group’s stock price to plummet, and several major projects even fell into Guan Shuyun’s hands. During this time, Phoebe held a press conference. I heard her PR team was top-tier; they downplayed the issues, and within two short weeks, media reports about the Lan Group and Phoebe vanished.
Old A updated Qiao Xin’s movements on time every day. Qiao Xin was not satisfied with the results. She teamed up with Li Shuhua to start a new round of plans. Although I was safely undercover by Guan Shuyun’s side, I still couldn’t grasp the depths of Qiao Xin’s plan and could only wait for an opportunity. Meanwhile, the appearance of Lan Feichun made things tricky…
“Now that you can complete small projects on your own, do you want to try more challenges? I heard Auntie Li mention that you were quite a capable figure back at Beisheng International.”
Guan Shuyun kept me behind after a meeting. We chatted in the conference room. She thought highly of me and suddenly brought up the past at Beisheng International. I thought for a moment and gave a casual, awkward laugh: “How many years ago was that? It feels like it happened in another lifetime.”
“I remember your rival not only stole your girlfriend but also framed you, causing you to lose your job and gain a bad reputation. If I recall correctly, his name was Zhao Taian.”
When Guan Shuyun mentioned that name, my heart tightened inexplicably. I could only answer vaguely, “A name from the past. Yes, Zhao Taian—the start of my unrest and the reason I went to prison.”
“I heard he caused the death of your ex-girlfriend and led to your best friend’s miscarriage. In the end, he was only sentenced to life imprisonment. Evil men not dying… it truly makes one indignant.”
“I suppose I owed him in a past life. Why bring this up all of a sudden?”
I toyed with a pen in my hand, sketching in my notebook as I answered. She scrutinized me, a cryptic smile appearing on her face before she changed the subject: “I haven’t heard news of Qiu Qi or He Mu in a long time, and I haven’t sent anyone to inquire. Why don’t you check for me and see what those two are plotting now?”
“With my current status, I’m afraid I can’t dig up any new info. They hate me so much their teeth ache.”
“Fine, I’ll arrange it myself. Go get busy.” “Okay.”
…
I always believed the most dangerous place was the safest, so I continued to live in Guan Shuyun’s mansion. Firstly, it allowed her to track my movements, which increased her trust in me. Secondly, when Qiao Xin and Li Shuhua came to visit, I was always around and could overhear pieces of their conversations.
Just like that, May arrived. Old A told me that on the surface, Qiao Xin and Li Shuhua were targeting Beisheng International. In reality, they were planning something else. Because I had pleaded for Li Shuhua before, both Lan Feichun and Lan Feijun now held portions of Lan Group equity. This meant they wanted to merge the two sides’ shares to become the second-largest shareholder of the Lan Group. Currently, the biggest obstacle was how to sway Feijun.
On the other hand, Jian Yumeng told me that the exposure of Phoebe had more or less affected the interests of Qiu Qi and He Mu. Although they had established business dealings with the Lan Group, Phoebe refused to help them retaliate against Guan Shuyun. As for why she refused, none of us knew. But Jian Yumeng repeatedly emphasized that I should stop meddling in Qiu Qi and He Mu’s affairs to avoid getting burned.
At this critical juncture, I sent out an invitation for Yu Xiao to organize a dinner for our former cellmates. Using this opportunity, I decided to tell her my first plan. She would definitely be a huge help.
