Chapter 82: Strong. “In the Name of the Father”
Ding. The elevator arrived. The moment Feijun and I stepped inside and the doors closed, the world of shouting finally went silent. It was just the two of us. From the second I stepped into that office, I knew today wouldn’t be a wasted trip. Everything out there was a smoke screen; the true purpose of my visit lay in this brief elevator ride.
My time was short, and I couldn’t guarantee someone wouldn’t get on at another floor. I immediately grabbed Feijun’s arm, shedding my aggressive facade and pleading with him:
“Brother, I don’t have much time… listen to me. In the coming days, I don’t know when I’ll be able to send you a message. If you receive one from me, take Qingfan and leave here immediately. I don’t care where you go, just ensure the child’s safety. You must leave, even if Phoebe adamantly disagrees… Promise me… don’t ask why. I’m doing this for her.”
Feijun froze for a moment, then gripped my shoulders, wanting to ask for details. “Feifan, what on earth is going on? Are Guan Shuyun and Qiao Xin threatening you? You can’t carry this alone. Are they going after the child? No, we can’t lie to Phoebe about this. The consequences would be too severe.”
Perhaps it was only in this moment that my toughening heart softened. “How is Qingfan lately? Is she listening to Suwei? I know you two love to spoil her—don’t let her get too wild.”
“The kid asks every day when ‘Da Fan’ is coming to take her home.”
That single sentence pierced my heart. I could feel my nose sting and my eyes redden. With a choked voice, I looked at Feijun imploringly: “Brother, I really can’t tell you more. But you must listen to me. When you get that message, take her and go. I’m begging you. This is the only thing I can do for her. Lie to her—tell her Da Fan went on an adventure and will be home to get her soon.”
The elevator reached the first floor. As the doors opened, I pulled away from Feijun, my expression returning to a cold neutrality. “Forget the coffee today,” I said loudly. “There will be other times. I’ll take my leave.”
Feijun frowned slightly, staring into my eyes. He knew I was in trouble. He whispered, “Don’t carry it alone. Don’t do anything stupid. Remember, you still have us.”
I sniffled, forcing back the emotion. “Then… please, stay back.”
Standing outside the new company’s office tower, I stared up at the large letters on the facade: Hanno Engineering & Construction.
Guan Shuyun didn’t personally bring me here. Instead, she had someone handle the paperwork and told me to report for duty myself. The position was ordinary—basically an assistant in the Engineering Department office.
I walked through the main doors and looked around the lobby. Both of her “mothers” were so wealthy that this “idiot son” of a startup was decorated quite nicely. Before I reached the front desk, a woman stepped out and blocked my path. When I saw who it was, the name Duoran nearly escaped my lips. I swallowed hard and managed to say, “Miss Doris?”
Duoran’s expression was flat. She showed no joy at seeing me after so long. In fact, her smile held a trace of cunning. she circled me, saying maliciously, “How strange. Aren’t you working at the Guan Corporation? Why are you here?”
I narrowed my eyes and gave a polite smile. “To start my new job, of course. Perhaps Miss Doris doesn’t know, but CEO Guan has arranged for me to work here. Is there a problem?”
She studied me for a long while before finally accepting it. “Since it’s CEO Guan’s arrangement, I naturally respect it. Go on then.”
As I brushed past her, I slowed my pace and whispered subtly: “I know she sent you back. I don’t know your plan, but don’t worry—I won’t expose you. Just… don’t interfere with my actions. Otherwise… it’ll be a lose-lose situation for everyone.”
Duoran didn’t respond. She simply stared ahead as if I hadn’t spoken and walked past me without even a “goodbye.” After that small interlude, I was led to my department. Most of the office seemed to know I was sent by Guan Shuyun, so they were very courteous.
The engineering files piled on my desk were thick. I familiarized myself with the workflow, though the dense content and numbers were a headache. Just as Guan Shuyun said, I took the initiative to ask questions whenever I was confused. My colleagues were patient and even offered hands-on teaching. This harmonious atmosphere was a pleasant surprise.
By lunch, my head was spinning. There was a knock at the office door. It was Guan Shuyun’s secretary. She peeked inside, found me, and gave a playful smile. “Time to eat. Someone is waiting for you.”
Immediately, all eyes in the office were on me. I stood up and hurriedly cleared my desk, saying awkwardly, “Uh… I’ll be going then… sorry to trouble you all this morning… thank you…”
I rushed out of the office. A “scorched earth” aura seemed to emanate from five meters away—Guan Shuyun was leaning against a window with her arms crossed. “You’re so slow,” she complained impatiently.
“Aren’t you supposed to be at the Guan Corporation? Why are you here?”
“This is also my company. Can’t I come for a look?” she replied leisurely. “Come on, let’s eat.”
I followed behind her, shamelessly joking, “Did you come all this way just to take me to lunch? Can I request BBQ?”
The secretary covered her mouth to hide a giggle. Guan Shuyun didn’t snap back; she just kept walking. “I find that my appetite improves when I eat with you. In my understanding, only pigs and you can make eating look so delicious. As for BBQ, forget it. I don’t like the smell of smoke. I can order you a plate of salt and pepper pork, and you can pretend.”
Comparing me to a pig? I rolled my eyes. “That’s a bit much!”
After spending more time with Guan Shuyun, I realized my resistance toward her was slowly weakening. This feeling was dangerous; it could easily cloud my judgment for what was to come. I constantly reminded myself: Never forget who you are dealing with. Don’t be fooled by her smile; her malice is lurking just beneath the surface.
While I was immersed in learning engineering, Guan Shuyun gave me a brilliant opportunity. She took on a small project—specifically for me, or so she said.
“This town road is about two kilometers long. The company will provide the blueprints and plan. You handle the mixing station and the labor company. Run the paperwork yourself. Check the contracts carefully and don’t miss the deadline. I’ve given you a chance to test your skills; don’t mess it up.”
So, at thirty years old, I, a former accountant who only knew how to use an abacus, began to scramble in a brand-new field. This passion for a career—stepping out of the role of a housewife—was something I was genuinely grateful to Guan Shuyun for. And it was through this project that I gained new insights into her plans.
Guan Shuyun had designed this new company to restrain Lan Feiyi. By having Phoebe invest, she reduced the Lan Corporation’s business. However, since Guan Shuyun’s actual stake was now higher, she funneled all the high-potential projects toward herself, stripping Phoebe of decision-making power.
Phoebe remained quiet in the face of these moves, never blocking her arrangements. I often wondered why she was so passive—until Duoran’s presence made it clear.
Guan Shuyun dared to take on so many massive projects simultaneously because of her extreme confidence in Doris Venture Capital. Money was her biggest issue, and Doris gave her the backbone to ignore it.
I finally saw Phoebe’s endgame. On the surface, she was losing. But behind the scenes, Duoran’s involvement had led the Guan Corporation to incur unimaginable debts to Doris Venture Capital. Guan Shuyun trusted Doris too much. She had no idea that if Doris Venture Capital filed a claim, that debt would be enough to crush her flourishing empire.
When Phoebe finally pulled the net, the result was easy to imagine: at best, Guan Shuyun would have to hand over her business to Doris; at worst, she’d lose her stake in the Guan Corporation entirely. Phoebe was the ultimate winner. She used Guan Shuyun’s hands to build the projects, and just as they matured, she would seize them.
But Phoebe hadn’t counted on me. I had become the key to her plan’s success or failure. If I exposed Duoran’s identity, I could save Guan Shuyun. If I didn’t, Guan Shuyun would fall into a trap while Phoebe rose to the top.
Just as I was weighing my choices, Qiao Xin appeared again, breaking the peace. This time, she came with a vengeance, aiming her spear directly at me.
