Chapter 79: Playing the Fool. “Because of Love, Therefore Love”
I stood up and faced Phoebe. She took two steps back. In the dim light of the emergency stairwell, her face carried the ruthless finality of a heart that had truly died. Her gaze lingered on Guan Shuyun’s calf for a moment before snapping up to stare straight into my eyes. She spoke again: “You want a new life so badly? Fine, I’ll grant you that. I want to see exactly how you end up with Guan Shuyun. When the time comes, don’t come crying to me to save you. Neither of you… I won’t let either of you off the hook.”
Phoebe’s heart had finally withered. In the long, dark corridor outside the exit, the echo of her high heels retreated with resolute finality. It felt as if those thin heels were piercing my chest with every step. I couldn’t help but frown until the sound faded completely.
Suddenly, Guan Shuyun wrapped her arms around my neck from behind, pulling me back. She rested her head on my shoulder, breathing warm air against my ear. She teased in a low voice, “Little puppy You, we’ve been threatened quite severely~ Are you scared? If you are, you can beg me… I can protect you too, you know. I certainly won’t be any worse than Lan Feiyi.”
I turned around to look at her. I acted as if I didn’t care about Phoebe’s words at all and gave a natural smile: “Well, you see the situation I’m in now. If you still don’t trust me, Lan Feiyi really will play me to death.”
Guan Shuyun hooked her finger under my chin, staring into my eyes to see if I was lying. Failing to find a flaw, she leaned in and pressed a kiss to my forehead. “Fine. I’ll give you a ‘stamp.’ You’re one of my people now.”
I was stunned for a moment. She’s even hitting on me now? Is this woman that starved for affection? She brushed past me to leave, but suddenly turned back, silent for a long while before speaking: “Though your abilities are mediocre, you’re not entirely useless… I’ve tasted a bit of your ‘goodness’ myself. It makes sense why Lan Feiyi didn’t want to let you go. You Feifan… how about… I keep you?”
‘I think we should get to the point.’ ‘Go ahead, I’m listening.’ ‘I only need a body, no extra emotions involved. Do you understand what I mean?’ ‘I understand.’
The scene of the first time I went home with Phoebe flashed vividly in my mind—even the dialogue was identical. It was a bitter pill to swallow. Being unconsciously triggered by past memories is truly the most difficult part of this.
I bent down, picked up my coat, and brushed off the dust. Deciding to play hard to get, I slung an arm around her shoulder and pouted, feigning anger as I repeated that old line: “I’m not a piece of meat. What kind of person do you take me for?”
Guan Shuyun tilted her head, a spark of excitement in her eyes. “I take you for my person~”
“Stop teasing me, boss! Let’s go!”
I took her hand and led her toward the end of the corridor. Just as we reached the door, she pulled me back. “Wait.”
“What is it?”
She pulled a tissue from her clutch. “The ‘stamp’ on your forehead looks like a third eye. You look like Erlang Shen.”
I lowered my head slightly, my hand instinctively resting on her waist to bring her closer. “Wipe it off, then.”
She was happy to play this flirtatious game with me. As I admired her beautiful face, I noticed she actually blushed. How rare. Out of the corner of my eye, I spotted a figure in the distance. Phoebe, clutch in hand, was preparing to leave this suffocating gala.
I could no longer see her coldness. From that distance, her gaze held nothing but desolate sorrow. Since she liked watching me so much, I decided to give her something to look at. I pulled Guan Shuyun into a hug, burying my head in the crook of her neck. The sudden move elicited a small gasp from her, but she didn’t struggle. “What are you doing?”
I confessed honestly into her ear—though from a distance, it looked like I was kissing her earlobe: “Don’t move. Lan Feiyi is watching us from over there. I’m faking it this time, and I’m telling you upfront.”
Only after Phoebe tossed her hair and left in a rage did Guan Shuyun pull away, pinching my cheek. “You’re quite the mischievous one.”
I looked at her seriously. “Then make sure you don’t start believing the act.”
She huffed unhappily. “Your face is barely passable. Do you think the women I sleep with or play with are worse than you? One compliment and you think you’ve reached the heavens?”
“Yes, yes, you’re the most capable, the best! Ten out of ten! Now come on, let’s go back and host your guests.”
Guan Shuyun sighed. “Endless socializing is so annoying… you come with me…”
“How can a little assistant handle those big bosses?”
“Shut up. I’ll talk; you block the drinks.”
…
I watched as Guan Shuyun moved through the circles of guests. She drank a lot with various people, her smile never wavering even when her jaw must have been aching from the effort. I didn’t know what she had been through to reach this peak of power, but it was clear Guan Qinyun’s influence had fundamentally altered her life’s trajectory.
People only ever see the success. They saw her wealth and status, not the moments where she, too, had to bow her head and play the pleasing hostess.
Eventually, the alcohol hit her. She leaned against me, eyes half-closed. I hoisted her up by the arm and found a seat in the lounge. “Boss, you’ve had too much.”
She suddenly pointed a finger toward the ceiling, nearly poking my face. “As always! Today’s gala was a success…”
With that, she flopped over and laid her head on my lap, looking up at me. I quickly shielded her head with my hand. “This is very unladylike. It’ll look bad if someone sees.”
I looked around like a thief, and when I looked back down at her, her eyes were wide open. A tear, smudged with makeup, traced a line down her temple. “Take me home.”
I pulled out some tissues and carefully wiped her tears without asking why she was crying. I draped my coat over her shoulders, signaled her secretary to explain the situation, and led her out of the hotel.
…
A woman acting drunk is scarier than a man. Even though she sat quietly in the passenger seat with her head against the window, I discovered she was a “mutterer” when drunk.
“Why aren’t you driving? Why are we stopped? There’s no camera here, just go… You Feifan, you’re such a dallying woman!”
Deep breath… If it weren’t for our current “special” relationship, I’d have knocked her out with a frying pan. “Can you be quiet!”
She sat bolt upright, glaring at me. “You dare yell at me?”
I gave up. “No… I need to focus on driving, and you won’t stop talking…”
“I don’t care! You’re just as annoying as that Golden Retriever of yours!”
I couldn’t take it. I pulled over to let her finish her tantrum. “What did my Duoduo ever do to you? Why do you hate him?”
She crossed her arms, sulking. “Lan Feiyi brought that dog into the garden to bite me… It bit me! Your dog bit me!”
Seeing her on the verge of tears, my mind filled with the thought: If you’re such a menace, why didn’t Duoduo finish the job? Wait… Phoebe brought Duoduo to the garden to bite her? When did that happen? Phoebe doing something so “un-Phoebe”? I opened a bottle of water for her. “Here, drink some water. Tell me slowly…”
She took it, even muttered a “thank you,” and began chugging it greedily.
“Slow down… slow down…”
I noticed something was off and tried to pull the bottle away. It was practically suctioned to her mouth. When it finally came off with a pop, water splashed everywhere. I hurriedly wiped her chin. She let out a long breath. “Ha~ give me the alcohol back, I can do two more bottles!”
“You could do a whole crate, but no more. I don’t want to be searching for a bathroom for you in five minutes.”
She pouted piteously and pressed her face against the window, giving me the back of her head. “Why can’t you just be a little nicer to me…”
“How am I being mean to you!?”
“You’re actually a good person… it makes sense why Lan Feiyi treats you like a treasure… but you can’t have such a bad attitude toward me…”
Give me a break! Why are you the one acting aggrieved after all the evil you’ve done? I stammered back, “I… I’m being nice, aren’t I? I’m not fighting or arguing with you. I didn’t spit in the coffee I made you. I’m being very forgiving!”
She started picking at the rubber seal on the window. “What’s wrong with me keeping you? I’ll give you food, drinks, everything… so many people want to be connected to me and can’t even get in the door! What’s so good about Lan Feiyi? You just can’t stop thinking about her, you just…”
“…”
I just let her ramble. You can never wake someone pretending to be asleep, nor someone pretending to be drunk. So, I tried the “violent” approach. I reached over and gave the back of her head a sharp, stinging flick.
She immediately clutched her head, wincing. Her voice returned to normal: “You Feifan! You dared to hit me!”
I crossed my arms and glared at her. “Is it fun pretending to be drunk?”
She froze, then started shouting in frustration: “Every time… every time… every time it’s like this!”
“Like what?”
“You bully me! Ever since we met, except for that last dinner where I won, you always have the upper hand! I won’t accept it!”
I stifled a laugh. “You’re the one who keeps provoking me. You can’t beat me, so you blame me? So… what exactly were you trying to express with that act?”
She stubbornly turned her head away and sat up straight. “It was just fun…”
I thought back to her “drunken” ramblings. She was still harping on my relationship with Phoebe and the idea of “keeping” me. Was it a slip of the tongue or a calculated move? People like Guan Shuyun don’t do anything without a purpose. What was she really trying to say?
I started the car again. “Let’s go home. It’s late.”
“I’m not full. I’m hungry.”
“Fine. I’ll call the butler and have him prepare a late-night snack. What do you want?”
“No. I want you to make it.”
I gripped the steering wheel. After such a long day, who has the energy for the kitchen? “Do you just feel uncomfortable if you go one day without torturing me?”
She toyed with her phone, answering lazily, “I finally have you tied to my side. If I don’t mistreat you, I’ll at least bore you to death. Otherwise, life would be so dull~”
