My Weekend Lover Turned Out To Be My Boss - Chapter 76
Chapter 76: Assistant. “White Rose”
I finally realized it: Guan Shuyun making me her assistant was a prank. In the grand scheme, it was meant to sting Lan Feiyi’s eyes. In the immediate sense, it was meant to work me to death. She is likely the most demanding boss on the planet.
I was assigned to a small office right next to hers. It reminded me of years ago at Jieshi Excellence, when Phoebe also had me stationed next door. The difference was that Phoebe didn’t harass me for no reason every five minutes.
Ever since I made Guan Shuyun that first cup of coffee, the desk phone rang every ten minutes like clockwork.
“You Feifan, the coffee is cold. Make another one.” “Yes, CEO Guan.”
Ten minutes later… “You Feifan, the office plants are drooping. Come in and water them.” “Yes, CEO Guan.”
Ten minutes later… “You Feifan, the printer needs A5 paper. Go to the administration department and get me a ream.” “Yes, CEO Guan.”
Ten minutes later… “You Feifan, my tea set is dirty. Come wash it.” “Yes, CEO Guan.”
Ten minutes later… “You Feifan, check today’s weather for me.” “Yes, CEO Guan. Overcast, 8°C-12°C. Please stay warm.”
Five minutes later… “You Feifan… are you playing on your phone? Look at the top right corner of the door; there’s a camera.” “I’m booking your restaurant! Guan Shuyun… are you just bored? Is there no end to this!”
“I don’t care. Bad attitude, using a phone during work hours. Deduct two hundred, HR assessment, public reprimand.” “You—!” Click. She hung up. I made a face at the camera.
Ten minutes later… “You Feifan, since you have nothing to do, take my car out for a wash…” Freedom! I was happily getting ready to leave when she changed her mind. “Actually, it’s not that dirty. Go walk through the entire office building and introduce yourself to every department.”
“Shouldn’t the secretary lead me?” “What, you want special treatment? My secretary is busy. Do you expect me to lead you personally?” I ground my teeth. “Yes, CEO Guan. Understood!”
…
By the time I had visited three departments and met dozens of staff members, it was nearly noon. Just as I headed for the fourth department, Guan Shuyun called. “You Feifan, I’m hungry. Take me to the restaurant.”
I rushed into her office. She was tidying her desk and looked up. “You really have no initiative.” “Huh?”
She crossed her arms. “A good assistant always looks for work. You see me tidying my desk; you should proactively take over. Do you think I’ve been calling you all morning just for fun? From now on, cleaning the office, washing tea sets, tidying the desk, and tending the plants must be done within an hour—before I even arrive at the office. I won’t remind you again. If it’s not done, it counts against your performance. Other tasks will be arranged by my secretary.”
She continued, “Also, making you introduce yourself wasn’t to prank you. It was so you’d familiarize yourself with the internal structure and build your courage. You’re an outside hire; you don’t belong to any department, but my affairs connect to all of them. If no one knows who you are, how will you communicate with them later? You have to show your best self quickly to build workplace relationships. Only then can you work efficiently. What was Lan Feiyi doing? Did she never teach you this?”
I hung my head while tidying the files. Despite the grievance in my heart, I whispered, “Apologies, CEO Guan. I will correct my attitude and familiarize myself with the work.”
…
The drive to the restaurant confirmed my suspicion that this was premeditated. For a working lunch, we should have picked something near the office, but this place was a twenty-minute drive away. It was high-end, clearly meant for luxury spending.
As we stepped through the door, my eyes caught a familiar figure. Phoebe was holding her clutch, talking to several men. She was likely hosting business clients.
Guan Shuyun, never one to miss a chance for a scene, called out from afar, “Oh, CEO Lan! And CEO Xie, long time no see! What a coincidence to find you both here.”
The man, CEO Xie, turned. They were clearly old business acquaintances. After some pleasantries, he invited us, “Why doesn’t CEO Guan join us for lunch? I hear you and CEO Lan are collaborating on something big. Two beauties joining me for a meal would be a sight to behold!”
Phoebe’s eyes stayed fixed on me. She remained silent, as she usually disliked fake business pleasantries. Guan Shuyun was chatty but ultimately declined. “I’d hate to interrupt your business talk. But I look forward to seeing you both at the Guan Corporation annual gala tonight.”
Once Xie entered his private room, Phoebe lingered at the door. She pointed at me. “May I ask, is this a new hire, CEO Guan?”
Guan Shuyun smiled. “CEO Lan knows how busy I am. One secretary isn’t enough. I heard Miss You served as your assistant before; I figured anyone who worked for you must be capable. Since our companies are working closer together, Miss You’s knowledge of both sides makes her the perfect candidate for the role.”
Phoebe remained silent, pursing her lips before closing the door to the private room, shutting us out.
…
We were led to a table in the main hall. I pulled out a chair for Guan Shuyun. “You enjoy creating these encounters with Phoebe, don’t you? You have a permanent private room here, yet you made me book a regular table.”
Guan Shuyun leaned on her hand. “I’m the boss; I do what I want. Do you get a vote? Besides, how would I know her schedule? The business circle is small; everyone eats here. It’s just a coincidence.”
She snatched the menu from the waiter and tossed it in front of me. “You order. No spicy food.”
I felt she was intentionally wearing down my will while dredging up memories. I ordered a few dishes. As the food arrived and I served her soup, she asked casually, “When you were Lan Feiyi’s assistant, did you get to tag along for free meals often too?”
I knew it. She was going to make me relive those days. Even if the memories were blurred, it made me feel incredibly uncomfortable.
