Chapter 74: Rescue. “Leave the Sadness to Myself”
Hearing my interrogation, Guan Shuyun burst into a wild, frantic laugh. She gesticulated grandly as she spoke: “Yes, that He Mu… he knelt on the ground and kowtowed to me, piteously begging me to save Guan Qinyun. That image is unforgettable—his forehead was swollen from the floor, and his mouth could only repeat ‘save her, save her’…
Qiu Qi, do you know why I eventually sabotaged Guan Qinyun’s company? That was the exit ramp I gave her. If she handed the company to me, she could have come home obediently and helped me run the family business. I would have given her my bone marrow. It was a perfect win-win. But no, she refused the bright path and insisted on fighting me to the death. She said that company was her ‘wife-fund’ and she couldn’t give it up—all for some nameless woman who paints. She fought me with her life, so she had no choice but to die!”
When a person is pained to the extreme, they become speechless. Like Qiu Qi at this moment, she leaned forward heart-wrenchingly, roaring at Guan Shuyun, her former composure and wisdom long gone. Just then, Lin Chen burst in. His face was streaked with blood, and he held a dagger. The bodyguards immediately moved to shield Guan Shuyun, but Lin Chen grabbed one by the collar, pressing the blade to his throat: “Move.”
Guan Shuyun looked at Lin Chen in horror, finally realizing: “You Feifan, so this was your goal all along! You dared to play me!”
I was stunned too; I hadn’t expected Lin Chen to cause such a bloody scene at the Guan estate. The guard was frozen in fear. Lin Chen kicked him down and knocked him unconscious with a few swift blows. He jumped onto the platform and sliced through the ropes binding Qiu Qi. At that moment, the security guards from earlier swarmed into the living room with reinforcements.
I couldn’t help, and in the chaos, I was pushed toward Guan Shuyun. Qiu Qi scrambled up and snatched the fallen dagger from the floor. Just as I thought Lin Chen would take her and leave, she lunged toward me—or rather, toward the person next to me. Everyone’s attention was on Lin Chen, and they had neglected Guan Shuyun’s safety.
A thought flashed through my mind, a split-second decision that led me to protect Guan Shuyun. Don’t ask me why; in my eyes, this wasn’t a bad move. I used my shoulder to shove Guan Shuyun aside. The next second, the dagger sank into my shoulder. Even with my thick winter coat, the sharp blade pierced deep into my flesh, and a vibrant red stain bloomed across my clothes. It was clear: Qiu Qi truly intended to kill Guan Shuyun.
The pain made me grit my teeth. I endured the agony and shouted: “Lin Chen! Take her and go!”
Lin Chen broke through the crowd toward us. Qiu Qi’s eyes were filled with shock; she likely never expected that the person to ruin her final move would be me: “Why?”
I didn’t have time to answer. I shoved her back with all my might: “GO WITH HIM!!!”
I watched Lin Chen grab Qiu Qi by the collar and carve a path through the crowd, eventually disappearing from my sight. A group of men chased after them, while another group stayed behind, surrounding me tightly. I clutched the hilt of the dagger in my shoulder and collapsed to the floor in pain, laughing grimly at them: “What’s the point of surrounding me? Do I look like I can run away in this state?”
Guan Shuyun pushed the guards aside and knelt down to look at the wound. She gripped the hilt and gave it a small, cruel twist. My mind went blank with pain as I groaned through clenched teeth: “Agh!!!”
“Did you think I would be grateful for this? Pathetic!”
She stood up and signaled the guards: “Have the doctor stop the bleeding, then bring her to the dining room.”
…
Dammit. If I ever take a blade for someone again, my name isn’t You. That pain was almost transcendental. That woman Guan Shuyun—did she have to give it that extra twist? Heartless bitch. The Guan family’s private doctor was skilled, though. After a long session of stopping the bleed, debriding the wound, and bandaging me up, I was led to the dining room downstairs. By then, I had exhausted every curse word in my mental vocabulary.
Entering the dining room, Guan Shuyun was already seated. To my shock, though it had been less than an hour, Phoebe was there too. I knit my brows; I really didn’t want her involved in this mess. They seemed to be in the middle of a conversation, which went silent the moment I appeared.
Phoebe stared at my torn coat. The blood had darkened into a crusty, crimson slit. She slammed her hand on the table with a loud crack, demanding: “Guan Shuyun, there are lines one doesn’t cross. You turned her into this; I need an explanation.”
“I understand your protective instinct,” Guan Shuyun said contemptuously, taking a sip of red wine. “But you’d better ask the victim who actually did that to her.”
Phoebe stood up and approached me. Her finger brushed the hole in my coat, her brows knotted in a deep worry. She whispered: “Does it hurt?”
I knew she was hurting for me, but I didn’t answer. Instead, I asked coldly: “What are you doing here?”
She faltered, then reached for my hand: “I’m here to take you home.”
I pulled my hand away. “I am a guest at CEO Guan’s house. I don’t understand what CEO Lan means.”
“Feifan, stop messing around. You’re hurt. Let’s go home and rest.”
I took a deep breath. I really disliked Phoebe’s soft, pleading tone. I bypassed her impatiently and found a seat. Guan Shuyun loved this drama, watching with a silent smirk. I played along to satisfy her: “It’s just a flesh wound; I won’t die. If CEO Lan wishes, she can join us for dinner. As for whether I leave, that is my choice.”
Phoebe suppressed her temper and sat beside me, turning the conversation back to Guan Shuyun: “I’m meddling today because I want to know what CEO Guan and Miss You have to discuss over this meal.”
Guan Shuyun laughed. “There are many topics. For example… Multiple. Choice. Questions. We could talk about that for quite a while~”
Guan Shuyun emphasized those words heavily, causing Phoebe’s expression to change drastically. Her fists clenched under the table. I immediately feigned interest: “Multiple choice? What kind of questions? CEO Guan, do tell.”
Guan Shuyun tilted her head at Phoebe, playing coy: “That might not be appropriate, since it concerns CEO Lan.”
“CEO Lan is right here, so we’d end up talking about it anyway, wouldn’t we? It’s fine. CEO Guan, don’t keep us in suspense.”
My injury made my arm immobile, so it hung naturally by my side. Phoebe’s hand suddenly grasped mine under the table. Winter is such a rogue, freezing everything; her hand was ice-cold. Guan Shuyun didn’t wait for Phoebe’s permission and started speaking: “Ah, CEO Lan, at that dinner party the other day, you were sitting in this exact spot. It’s like a full circle.”
“…”
Phoebe stared at Guan Shuyun without speaking, her grip on my hand tightening until our fingers were locked. Guan Shuyun swirled her wine and asked me: “You Feifan, if in this world the three most important things to you were Family, Love, and Career, and you had to discard one, which would you choose?”
I answered without a second thought: “Career, obviously. Only a career is devoid of emotion. If it’s gone, you can build it back up.”
After speaking, I looked at Phoebe. She avoided my gaze. Guan Shuyun pouted and shook her head: “But that isn’t how CEO Lan chose. Think about it—a child is one’s own flesh and blood, you can’t throw that away. And this massive family estate? Giving that up is even more impossible, since money dictates everything. That leaves only you. Remember: only you are expendable. Because if you’re lost, you can be replaced. Your ‘replaceability’ is very high.”
Guan Shuyun laughed brightly, as if she had told the world’s funniest joke. I continued to scrutinize Phoebe. The lump in my throat made it hard to speak, yet I forced a fake smile and whispered into her ear: “Is CEO Guan right? CEO Lan… Lan Feiyi… Phoebe… Wife… Weekend Lover… A mediocre person like me is indeed very replaceable. You can find someone else. There are so many people better and better-looking than me. You aren’t lacking.”
Phoebe’s grip became agonizingly tight. She shook her head. “It’s not like that. It’s not…”
“Then what is it? I’ll consider the ten years I loved you as food for the dogs. Stop pestering me, okay? Don’t let our love end on such an ugly note.”
Phoebe couldn’t take it anymore. She stood up, dragging my hand regardless of my injury, her face a mask of anger, pain, and endless despair: “Come with me! HOME!”
I winced in pain, then raised my hand and shoved her back hard into her chair, roaring with uncontrollable rage: “GET OUT! I don’t… I don’t want to see you again! GET OUT!”
She cried. She cried right in front of Guan Shuyun. I didn’t give her an ounce of dignity; I humiliated her to the core. The atmosphere became suffocatingly awkward. Guan Shuyun cleared her throat: “Since my guest so clearly doesn’t want to see you, CEO Lan, perhaps we should meet another time? Do me this favor.”
She signaled the guards at the door: “Escort CEO Lan out properly!”
The guards approached quickly. Phoebe glared at me, tears tracing a beautiful curve down her face. Her voice was thick with emotion: “Deng-Deng, you are free.”
I closed my eyes and turned away, listening to the sharp, resolute sound of her high heels on the marble floor. Do you still remember the sweet things we whispered while lying in each other’s arms?
‘You are the only person in this world I would willingly drink arsenic for with a smile.’ ‘You Feifan is the only person in this world I have decided to follow into the underworld with my head bowed.’
I leaned on the table and burst out laughing—a laugh so hollow it made Guan Shuyun’s skin crawl. She leaned back and muttered: “Have you finally gone mad?”
I looked up at her, my gaze fixed. “Guan Shuyun, don’t you and Qiao Xin want the Lan family to fall? Then let’s make Lan Feiyi lose everything.”
Guan Shuyun’s smile vanished. She stared into my eyes, searching for a flaw: “You mean, you want to pick a side and play with us?”
“Yes.”
“Don’t forget whose man just turned my house upside down. You’re tied to Qiu Qi and Lan Feiyi in a mess of relationships. Why should I believe you?”
I pulled open my coat. The struggle just now had reopened my wound; the white bandage was soaked in a fresh pool of bright red blood. I exposed it to her eyes: “Because even though I hate you, I took a knife for you and saved your life, and I’m still sitting here calmly talking to you. You and Qiao Xin can choose not to believe me. Test me however you like; I’m not afraid. I’ve already offended Lan Feiyi and Qiu Qi. You have to give me protection.”
Guan Shuyun didn’t agree, but she didn’t refuse either. She walked over with her wine glass and touched the crimson bandage with her finger. Her tone softened. “Come, let’s get your wound re-dressed. I’ve had the chef prepare dishes specifically for blood replenishment; you should try them later. If you don’t mind, my humble abode can offer you a room. Consider it staying to help me kill the boredom.”
“It would be my pleasure. Thank you very much.”
