Chapter 72: Practice. “Angel Among Devils”
Returning to Guan Shuyun’s ostentatious villa always made me feel uneasy. As I parked the car, she was already standing in the open space waiting for us. When I stepped out, Lin Chen followed close behind. Guan Shuyun whispered something to the butler standing by her side, who promptly left the parking area.
Swinging her hips with the air of a woman who ruled her own domain, she leisurely invited us: “Come, let’s sit in the garden and watch the show unfold.”
She walked ahead with a light step, seemingly looking forward to the bet I had proposed. We entered the garden one after another; domestic helpers had already prepared hot tea and pastries under a parasol, and two European-style chairs were set out. As Guan Shuyun sat down, a servant poured hot tea and handed it to us. “Please enjoy.”
“Thank you.”
Guan Shuyun took a small plate with several pieces of “donkey rolling” (glutinous rice rolls). The presentation was so exquisite it seemed a shame to break them. Just as I thought that, she poked her fork into one and held it out to me. “My pastry chef’s skills are top-notch. Try it.”
I took the plate and stared at the pastry, smiling. “I’m half afraid you’ve poisoned it.”
Guan Shuyun laughed and popped a piece into her own mouth, looking satisfied. “Should I have someone bring you a silver needle to test it then?”
Lin Chen stood guard at my side. Guan Shuyun looked up at him, and after another silent appraisal, she spoke: “Does your man need a warm-up?”
Lin Chen held his head high with an arrogant posture, appearing completely indifferent to what was about to happen. Seeing no reaction, Guan Shuyun addressed the butler in the distance: “Have them get ready. Once they’ve warmed up, bring them to the garden.”
Given the setup, it was clear Guan Shuyun intended to use this to slap me in the face. While waiting, Lin Chen left my side to walk a circuit around the garden. Guan Shuyun didn’t care, but I knew exactly what he was doing—he was familiarizing himself with the routes and exits.
Guan Shuyun rested her chin on one hand, watching me with an unreadable gaze that gave me the chills. I turned my head uncomfortably to look back at her. “Stop staring at me. It’s weird.”
She chuckled and pulled out a tissue, reaching out as if to wipe my mouth. “Getting food on your face… are you a three-year-old?”
I immediately blocked her hand, scoffing at her. “Can you pull this nauseatingly ambiguous behavior with just anyone?”
Instead of being offended, she laughed harder. “You really love to flatter yourself… but I’m starting to understand why Lan Feiyi stayed with you.”
I scrutinized her, softening my tone slightly. “Why?”
“You’re a typical, loyal old puppy. Very suitable for being kept. Give you a little food and you wag your tail; if you’re disobedient, a little scolding makes you behave again. Most importantly—loyalty. A stranger couldn’t lure you away even with a giant bone.”
I took a sip of tea and couldn’t help but retort with a smile, “I think you’re not talking about me, but about my dog, Xi Duo.”
At the mention of my dog, a flash of disgust crossed Guan Shuyun’s face. She muttered, “Hmph! That cursed Golden Retriever!”
Her reaction was strange. “What did my dog ever do to you to get such a reaction?”
“Let’s not talk about that. Let’s watch the show!”
She summoned the butler. He approached and respectfully placed a checkbook in Guan Shuyun’s hand, along with a fountain pen and a seal. On the other side, her so-called “useless” security team trotted into the garden in a line. I counted them carefully.
There were two rows, exactly twelve men. They were heavily built, filling out their matching suits, and all of them were tall. Collectively, they looked like a squad of “suit-wearing thugs” who could fight and endure. Guan Shuyun admired her team and explained, “Don’t confuse my people with street punks. They’re former mercenaries. You should worry about your bodyguard.”
The men stood rigidly in place, highly disciplined. Guan Shuyun stood up and waved the checkbook at them. “Fight well. If you win, you split 1.2 million. If you lose, pack your bags and get out.”
Lin Chen saw his opponents were ready and slowly walked toward the center of the garden. I held up two fingers. He nodded. Guan Shuyun didn’t understand our code and asked curiously, “What does that mean?”
“If he wins, twenty baskets of soup dumplings every day. I’ll make sure he’s full.”
She looked at me in disbelief, but I stared back with confidence. “So, let’s see the showdown between 1.2 million and twenty baskets of dumplings. If I win, it’s a case of the underdog prevailing. If I lose, well, one against twelve isn’t a shameful loss.”
Guan Shuyun took a breath. “I’d like to see just how capable these dumplings are.”
I let her set the rules. “How do you want to play? You call it.”
Guan Shuyun had likely estimated Lin Chen’s strength, so she had a strategy. She raised her voice: “Bare-handed, no weapons. Two rounds. First round is fifteen minutes, six-on-one. Five-minute break. Second round is twenty minutes, one-on-one rotation with the remaining six. If your man falls, you lose. If he’s still standing when time is up, I lose.”
For Lin Chen, the physical toll of forty minutes was massive. The disadvantage was obvious. My heart sank a little, but he remained calm as if it were nothing and nodded to the rules.
“Coming up with rules like that… you’re really shameless.”
Guan Shuyun looked at me with an ‘and-what-can-you-do-about-it’ expression. “Who told you to be so bold as to bet with me? I’m a businesswoman; I don’t seek fairness, only profit and results. Everyone ready? Start the clock.”
At her command, the butler started the timer. The first six men formed a formation, surrounding Lin Chen. One man shouted and charged first. Lin Chen was conscious of his stamina and the time; he focused on dodging rather than striking. His speed was so incredible it stunned the guards.
We didn’t even see how he managed to break through their perimeter. When the guards realized a single charge wouldn’t work, they swarmed him. Lin Chen grabbed the nearest man by the collar and flung him toward the others. As that man lost his balance, Lin Chen leapt and landed a swift kick to the man’s neck. He blocked the next wave of attacks and the man he kicked collapsed instantly. First blood.
Two guards were behind him. I gasped, fearing the blind spot, but Lin Chen had already sensed the danger. As soon as his feet touched the ground, he executed a beautiful roundhouse kick, striking one man’s chest and using the momentum to kick the second man in the face. Both men went down in agony.
I suddenly remembered the giant hole in the study door at home. Lin Chen’s leg strength was clearly superhuman. I understood his strategy: the only way to win one-against-six was to pick them off one by one, and he was executing it perfectly.
In my head, I could only hear the League of Legends voice announcing: Double Kill… Triple Kill! This guy’s skill was phenomenal!
The fight turned into a one-sided humiliation of the six guards. During the struggle, Lin Chen ripped the suit jacket off one man. The garment became a weapon; as an opponent threw a punch, Lin Chen used the sleeves to tangle the man’s arm. When another guard lunged, Lin Chen dodged, caught the man’s hand, and tied the other sleeve into a dead knot.
The six were in complete disarray by the time the timer went off. Round one was an easy win for Lin Chen. Guan Shuyun’s face was dark with embarrassment. I sipped my tea and looked at her hand; her fist was clenched tight. I reached over and slapped her fist playfully.
Guan Shuyun jumped, glaring at me. “Why did you hit me!”
“Your fist is clenched so hard, doesn’t it hurt? Or maybe you want to go up and throw a few punches too?”
“Don’t get cocky. There’s still the second half.”
I raised an eyebrow. “If they can’t win in a group, they’ve got no chance one-on-one.”
The second half was a foregone conclusion. In less than ten minutes, the remaining guards were all on the ground. Since he had to wait for the timer to run out, Lin Chen casually kicked them a few more times to make sure they stayed down. Guan Shuyun couldn’t take it anymore; she stood up, walked to the center of the garden, and smashed her teacup on the floor. “Stop it! Twelve of you can’t beat one man? A bunch of useless trash! Get out of my sight!”
I laughed until tears came to my eyes and waved Lin Chen over. He seemed to be in high spirits too. Just as one guard stood up with a bloodied face, Lin Chen leapt onto the man’s shoulder, used him as a springboard, and flew a great distance—looking like a hero with Qinggong from a martial arts movie. It defied the laws of gravity.
He landed less than five meters from me. I stepped forward with a tissue. He leaned down and asked, “Finished?”
I wiped the sweat from his brow. For some reason, I felt a sudden sting in my nose. “Thank you.”
He froze, staring at me in surprise. I spoke softly, “I was once humiliated deeply in this place. You helped me get that revenge back… but really, what kind of monster are you? How are you this good?”
He steadied my arm and made a small request: “It was my duty… I don’t want twenty baskets of dumplings… can you give me a Xiuchun blade instead?”
A Xiuchun blade? Was he actually a Secret Service guard from the Ming Dynasty? I was confused, but I agreed instantly. “Alright. Once this is over, I’ll buy you a top-quality one. If I can’t find one for sale, I’ll have one forged for you. I promise you’ll be satisfied! That absolute beatdown was magnificent!”
“It’s a deal.”
Guan Shuyun returned to my side, fuming. She stared at Lin Chen for a long time. I playfully held out my hand. Defeated, she picked up her checkbook and pen, scribbled a check, stamped it, and shoved it into my arms. “You’re capable, I’ll give you that.”
I looked at the six zeros on the check and laughed. “Five million for forty minutes… that’s easier than winning the lottery. Thanks for the generosity, CEO Guan~”
Guan Shuyun’s face was beet red with rage. “Enjoy your moment. I’ll see if you’re still laughing in a little while!”
