Chapter 63: Provocation. “Mountains and Seas”
Ever since He Mu moved into my place, he had been leaving early and returning late almost every day, occasionally taking Qiu Qi with him. I couldn’t quite figure it out—this didn’t look like a simple vacation. Finally unable to hold it in, I asked casually during dinner one night, “Where have you two been running off to lately? You never take me along when you go out!”
My simple question caused both of them to fall silent for a moment. Qiu Qi quickly smiled, put some food on my plate, and explained simply: “Some of He Mu’s business associates live here. He figured since he’s finally in town, he should pay them a visit. It’s kept me busy following him around.”
So that’s it. I continued eating, unconcerned. “Oh~ taxis are expensive. You can use my car; it’s more convenient and saves time.”
He Mu ladled some soup for me. “Xiao Qi and I are going to be very busy lately. What about you? Just going to stay holed up at home every day?”
I laughed it off. “I’m just an unemployed wanderer. I don’t have much, but I have plenty of time. Going out costs money; staying home is best.”
He Mu shook his head with a wry smile. “You can’t do this long-term. Why not come work at our company? The environment is good, and the benefits won’t let you down.”
Qiu Qi burst out laughing. “He Mu, you’re so silly. Feifan is a stealthy rich person. The bar she co-owns is one of the top spots in the city. Don’t listen to her nonsense; she isn’t short on cash.”
Speaking of work, I suddenly slammed the table. “Qiu Wuming!!! You still owe me wages!”
Stunned by my outburst, Qiu Qi realized, “You actually remember that!”
Seeing her reaction, I got anxious. “You… you! You’re welching on the debt!”
Qiu Qi made a face and asked righteously, “Did we sign a labor contract?”
“Ah!!! You’re so devious…”
Seeing us bickering again, He Mu took a card from his wallet and placed it on the table. “You reminded me. We’ve been here a while; we can’t just eat and stay for free forever. Take this card. Use it for our living expenses. The limit will satisfy you.”
Though He Mu meant well, I wasn’t lacking. I pushed the card back. “Oh, I was joking. I stayed at your hostel for free back then, didn’t I? Don’t be a stranger!”
After a harmonious dinner, we unanimously decided to go for a walk to digest. I drove He Mu and Qiu Qi to the seaside. Not far from the bathing beach is a small island near the city center, connected by a large bridge. Many people enjoy walking or cycling around the island at night.
I parked the car at the bridge’s parking lot. We stopped on the bridge for a moment, looking at the city skyline across the coast. Across the bay, you could still see the neon lights of the coastal entertainment district. Near the island sat an enormous boat. He Mu stared at it for a long time before reading the sign: “Deyue Boat.”
I pointed at the vessel. “Deyue Boat—the most luxurious high-end restaurant around here. It stays moored there year-round. It’s the go-to spot for the wealthy to host guests. You get sea views while eating, and you can stay overnight. Basically, it’s high-end consumption across the board. Maybe… another time, the three of us can go up and enjoy ourselves?”
He Mu waved the idea away. “Forget it. I don’t really like those kinds of settings. But from afar, the boat is quite beautiful.”
“It’s become a landmark. It looks okay, I guess.”
Chatting, we crossed the bridge onto the island. The winter night sea breeze was stronger than I expected; just walking would have been freezing. Luckily, Qiu Qi saw a bicycle rental stall and insisted on renting a three-person bike. After some choosing, He Mu naturally sat in front, I sat in back, and we gave the middle seat to Qiu Qi, knowing she’d probably slack off on the pedaling.
Amidst the whistling wind, He Mu rang the bell while Qiu Qi and I laughed in the back. He Mu grumbled occasionally, “You two are so heavy! Put some effort into it!”
By the time we circled the island once, He Mu was exhausted. He hopped off, leaning on the handlebars and panting. “I am never riding a bike with you two again. You’re trying to kill me!”
Looking up, I realized we had stopped just outside the parking lot of the Deyue Boat. Out of curiosity, the three of us walked through the lot to get a closer look at the vessel. Qiu Qi pulled at He Mu and me, complaining, “Ugh, let’s go! We’re not going up, so standing here staring makes us look like country bumpkins!”
As we turned to leave, Qiu Qi was walking backward. A black Lincoln sedan rounded a corner, nearly hitting her. I grabbed her quickly, shouting, “Watch out!”
The Lincoln came to a halt. I was angry and wanted to give the driver a piece of my mind. I walked up and knocked on the window. A familiar face appeared. Before I could process it, I snapped, “Don’t you know how to use turn signals or a horn?”
“You Feifan, you’re like a cockroach. Why do I see you everywhere?”
I looked closer—it was Guan Shuyun. Well, if it was her, I was definitely going to make a scene today. I didn’t argue; I just put my hands on my hips and glared at her like a local thug. Guan Shuyun smiled as she pulled out her wallet. “Your friend was the one walking without looking. I don’t have time for your nonsense right now…”
As she spoke, she pinched a small stack of bills from her bag, preparing to toss them at me to humiliate me. I was faster. The moment her hand extended, I slapped the money right back into her face. The force was so great the cash scattered all over her.
It was the first time I saw Guan Shuyun lose her cool; she looked ready to explode. “If I don’t teach you a lesson today, you’ll really think I’m a pushover!”
Furious, and likely wanting to settle both old and new scores, she reached for the door handle to get out. But a hand reached out from the passenger seat and pressed down on her shoulder. The interior was too dark to see the woman’s face clearly, but from the silhouette, it wasn’t Phoebe. She looked like a foreigner. The woman spoke: “Why waste time on people like this? We didn’t hit her. Let’s go.”
To my surprise, Guan Shuyun listened. she adjusted her seat and stopped looking at me. The window rolled up slowly. The car behind the Lincoln honked. I pulled Qiu Qi back. I instinctively looked toward the second car—a black Mercedes G-Wagon. The license plate was my initials plus my birthday. My heart skipped. I stared at the woman in the driver’s seat. She was as cold and elegant as ever. She gave me a fleeting, indifferent glance, then looked proudly ahead and followed the Lincoln away.
I watched Phoebe’s car until it was gone. Only then did I compose myself and turn to my friends. Qiu Qi’s face was extremely strained, and He Mu didn’t look much better. Thinking they were upset by the encounter, I tried to soothe them. “Hey, rich people are all like that. Don’t let it get to you!”
“The woman in that car… do you know her?” He Mu asked.
As soon as he finished, Qiu Qi answered for me: “We ran into her at the door the very first day we got back… I think Feifan has some history with her.”
He Mu nodded silently and pushed the bike. “Let’s go. We’ve seen enough. Time to head back.”
…
I thought my love story with Phoebe had ended on a messy note. Only later did I realize that after the nightmare came another nightmare—everything was just beginning.
Early the next morning, He Mu took Qiu Qi out again. Having nothing to do, I decided to take Xiduoduo for a walk and pick up some fresh ingredients at the market. A thought had been blooming lately: video content was very popular now. I was thinking of starting an account for cooking tutorials; maybe it would be a way to earn some money.
I changed my shoes and took Duoduo out. I had just reached the garden of the complex when my phone rang. Seeing it was Su Wei, I answered with a relaxed “Good morning, Su Wei~ what’s up?”
“Feifan! Where are you?”
Su Wei’s voice was tinged with anxiety. It sounded like trouble. I looked at the car keys in my hand—lucky timing, He Mu hadn’t used my car today. I immediately turned toward the garage. “Is something wrong at the house?”
“I can’t get through to Phoebe; she might be in a morning meeting. Can you get over here quickly?”
Sensing the gravity of the situation, I calmed her: “Don’t worry, Su Wei. I’m on my way.”
I ushered Duoduo into the car and floored it toward the Lan family ancestral estate. When I finally sped into the courtyard, I saw two cars parked in front of the large garden entrance. One was the Lincoln from the other night. I thought Guan Shuyun was here to cause trouble. I opened the door and unclipped Duoduo’s leash—let the dog bite first, talk later. Duoduo bolted into the house.
I followed him into the living room. The elderly butler was standing by the sofa, with Su Wei standing beside him. When Duoduo ran in, Su Wei turned to me as if seeing a savior.
Sitting on the sofa was a blonde, blue-eyed foreign woman. Duoduo barked at her frantically. Behind the woman stood two men in suits—bodyguards. The aura was strikingly similar to how Phoebe used to be. The woman sat with her legs crossed and arms folded, completely unfazed by Duoduo. She tilted her head toward me and sneered mockingly, “Su Wei, is this the reinforcements you called for?”
I called Duoduo back and studied the woman calmly. Her features reminded me of the person sitting next to Guan Shuyun that night. For her to sit in the Lan house so brazenly, she had to be someone significant; otherwise, the clever Su Wei wouldn’t be at a loss. I have a bit of a rebellious streak and didn’t care how powerful she was. I sat on the opposite sofa and asked, “Who are you?”
The woman’s smile was sinister—very much like Guan Shuyun’s. She said slowly, “You Feifan, finally we meet.”
I raised an eyebrow. “Your Chinese is quite good, but… you didn’t answer the question. Never mind, let’s not beat around the bush. What do you want?”
The woman maintained her rigid posture, her tone condescending. “I came to see my niece. I don’t know why I’m being blocked. None of you are qualified to speak to me. Where is Lan Feiyi?”
The words “my niece” felt like a black hole dragging me into a terrifying vortex. Finally, the lingering familiarity in her eyes made me realize who she was—but I chose to play dumb. “I don’t understand what you’re saying.”
She gestured for me to look at the papers on the table. I picked them up with confusion. It was a visitation order issued by the court. It stated clearly that this woman’s name was Qiao Xin, the sister of the child’s deceased father—meaning she was Qingfan’s aunt. The order clearly defined the visitation schedule.
I took a sharp breath and looked at Su Wei and the butler. Their faces were defeated. The woman snatched the papers back, stood up, and surveyed the decor of the ancestral home. She asked hypocritically, “I’ve been waiting for ages. Where is my lovely little niece? Please don’t waste my valuable time.”
I followed her lead and answered, “It’s a school day. The child isn’t home. You’ll have to find another time.”
Qiao Xin radiated a fearless confidence. She laughed, “You Feifan, you really are a simple-minded person.”
At that moment, Su Wei leaned in and whispered in my ear, “Her choosing today to see the child is just a front. I bet she’s here to give Phoebe a warning shot.”
