My Weekend Lover Turned Out To Be My Boss - Chapter 6
Chapter 6: Six Months Ago IV – “Retreat”
Following the navigation instructions, I quickly found the restaurant where Yu Xiao was. To be precise, it was a very discreet private club. The exterior was unremarkable, guarded only by a few bodyguards in suits. Yu Xiao was waiting for me at the entrance. We exchanged smiles and had a long-overdue hug. She must be a regular customer here, as she simply gave a look to the bodyguards, and I followed her in with ease.
Walking behind Yu Xiao, I casually teased, “Not bad! Spending every day with Miss Jian, eating and drinking well, and frequenting high-end clubs like this.”
Yu Xiao didn’t stop, replying in an annoyed tone, “This club was opened by Yumeng. I only occasionally come here. Don’t call me a kept man being supported by a rich woman; I have my own career.”
I won’t comment on how lavish the club’s interior was; wealthy people are always extravagant. We wandered through a convoluted route, and I wasn’t sure where we were until a receptionist opened a door and led us into a private room. He then politely explained, “Ms. Jian said she is going to greet Ms. Lan in the next room first and asks you two to wait here. Is there anything else you require?”
“You can leave for now.”
“Then I won’t disturb you two.”
After sending the receptionist away and closing the door, Yu Xiao personally brewed a pot of fine tea to serve me, naturally starting the conversation: “Phoebe is right next door.”
I shrugged indifferently: “She’s busy socializing all the time. I’m used to it. I don’t know if the circle is just this small, or if the world is too small, but we always bump into acquaintances.”
“Let’s not talk about that for now. It’s been a while since we saw each other. How long has it been? A year or two?”
“How dare you ask? If I don’t look for you, you never look for me.”
“I’m a very aloof person, you know that. Time really doesn’t spare anyone. Prison feels like a lifetime ago.”
Yu Xiao handed the hot tea to me, sighing wistfully. I smiled, blew away the steam, and took a small sip. The tea was truly fragrant! Just then, the door opened, interrupting our conversation. Jian Yumeng walked in, wearing a sharp biker leather jacket, with matching leather pants that perfectly outlined her slender legs. Her devilishly high heels further accentuated her tall figure, and her makeup was, as always, gorgeous yet refined.
She placed her handbag aside, draped her arm over the chair back, and greeted me casually, “You Feifan, long time no see.”
Then she playfully sat down next to Yu Xiao. Jian Yumeng picked up Yu Xiao’s teacup and slowly sipped. The white porcelain cup now bore her lipstick mark. She filled the cup with hot tea and insisted Yu Xiao drink from the exact spot marked by the lipstick, claiming it was a way to enjoy a unique kiss at all times. I managed a strained chuckle, silently thinking, they’ve been in love for years, yet they’re still so annoyingly affectionate.
Jian Yumeng easily saw through my thoughts and leaned her chin on her hand, looking straight at me: “Love—you can never have too much of it, right?”
My finger traced circles along the teacup. I asked helplessly, “So you called me here just to rub your affection in my face?”
Jian Yumeng shook her head: “If you have the guts, go show us a little affection in the next room.”
“Forget it. Our kind of old-married-couple mode isn’t suitable for showing off.”
Getting to the point, Jian Yumeng spoke directly: “I’ve owned this club for a long time. The people who come and go are all big names. Do you know who your Phoebe is having dinner with?”
“I wish I did. Unfortunately, I never ask about her work affairs.”
“You Feifan, when will you learn to be more grounded? Being carefree for too long breeds resentment.”
Yu Xiao quietly listened to Jian Yumeng tease me. I wiped the smile from my face and looked at her seriously, vaguely feeling that Phoebe’s dinner was not simple. Jian Yumeng lightly tapped the table with her finger and continued: “Guan Shuyun, do you know this name?”
The name was naturally familiar. I answered without hesitation, “A few days ago, Phoebe got drunk at a social event, and it was this woman named Guan Shuyun who sent her home. We met once, but is there a problem?”
“The Guan family is an old established enterprise, dealing with both officials and merchants, with excellent commercial reputation in the industry. In recent years, the Guan family has ventured into building materials and construction engineering. Their business is booming. They’ve secured half of the government bidding projects. I remember that the Lan family’s Jieshi, Zhuoyue, including Beisheng International, which Phoebe acquired, are all related to the real estate industry, right? The Guan family’s strength is no less than the Lan family’s. This dinner is ostensibly about a strong alliance and mutually beneficial cooperation, but…”
Even though I hadn’t been involved in corporate development for a long time, what Jian Yumeng said was definitely important. This woman was deliberately building suspense at a crucial moment. I frowned slightly, staring at her: “Get to the point!”
“Guan Shuyun is the current Chairperson of the Guan family enterprise. Her status and assets are a complete replica of Phoebe. The most important thing is… her sexual orientation is the same as Phoebe’s. You’d think two people like that should be fighting fiercely over the market, but they’re having dinner together. The atmosphere next door is quite good! Furthermore, even when Phoebe is drunk, this person makes the effort to personally send her home. That’s truly unusual.”
Jian Yumeng’s tone was light, a lightness that made my heart feel heavy, yet I had no retort for her implied meaning. Yu Xiao filled my teacup, quickly trying to ease the tension: “Don’t listen to Yumeng’s nonsense. Commercial exchanges and cooperative relationships are normal. Don’t overthink it.”
“By the way, everyone in the circle knows that Guan Shuyun likes women. She’s a top member of this club. I always reserve a room for her. She brings a different woman here to relax every few days. I wonder how she manages it. You Feifan, I’m going to give you some unpleasant but honest advice, whether you want to hear it or not. Some people are hard to guard against, especially an old player. Even if Phoebe is firm, it doesn’t mean Guan Shuyun can’t undermine her. As the saying goes, anything is possible.”
Yu Xiao sensed the atmosphere was already wrong and quickly changed the subject: “Alright, let’s stop talking about this. You must be hungry. I’ll ask them to serve the food. I particularly like the chef’s cooking here. Feifan, you must try it.”
Jian Yumeng seemed to intentionally want to send Yu Xiao away and suggested, “Old Yu, go down to the wine cellar and get a bottle of red wine for me.”
Yu Xiao looked at her in surprise, but finally had no choice but to leave: “Fine, I’ll go see which bottle is suitable for tonight.”
Watching Yu Xiao leave, Jian Yumeng sighed in relief: “I sent Old Yu away so you don’t have to worry about saving face. Are you and Phoebe having problems?”
I lifted my hand wearily, rubbed my face, and sighed melancholically. After a long silence, I countered by asking Jian Yumeng, “Are you ever afraid that one day, the passion and warmth will be lost in your relationship with Old Yu, and all that’s left is reluctant nostalgia and habit? Everything turns into a chicken bone—flavorless to eat, yet a shame to discard?”
