My Weekend Lover Turned Out To Be My Boss - Chapter 28
Chapter 28: 2009 II. “Trajectory”
After retracting my gaze, Miss Secretary emerged from the pantry, placing a steaming cup of black tea on the coffee table. The boss signaled that I didn’t need to be too formal and could sit on the sofa. I hesitated, wearing my paint-proof long-sleeved coverall. Standing in such a space, I looked like an ugly duckling that had stumbled into the wrong room.
She also sat down on the sofa, resting one hand on the armrest. Her crossed legs allowed me to clearly see the beautiful lines of her calves. With the tip of her high-heeled shoe, she intentionally tapped the leg of the coffee table. This posture exuded a certain dominance. Fortunately, the smile on her lips didn’t fade, and she asked playfully, “What are you doing?”
While removing my coverall, I looked at her and answered honestly: “I have to take this off, otherwise, it will stain your sofa.”
She was probably amused by my innocent demeanor, as her smile widened into a larger arc, revealing two small dimples. She was beautiful in just the right way: “Carefulness gives people a good impression.”
I folded the coverall neatly, looked up, and smiled at her. I loved being complimented, so I was in a great mood: “Thank you… Boss, what do you need me for?”
She sized me up and down, her eyes bright with the desire to peer into my soul. Finally, she asked leisurely, “Is your name Qiu Qi?”
I picked up the teacup and blew on the steam, then added, “Yes, the ‘Qi’ with the ‘He’ and ‘Huo’ on the sides, and the ‘Qi’ with the ‘Yi’ and ‘Er’ on the sides. May I ask how the boss is addressed?”
“I really don’t like people calling me ‘Boss’ constantly. Just call me Qin Yun. Are you the only one responsible for the hand-painting on these floors?”
“Yes, yes, yes…”
“Do you think my office needs some decoration?”
Even though we only met once yesterday, inviting me for tea today certainly had another purpose. I looked up and observed the surroundings again, finally shaking my head: “Your office doesn’t need any more hand-painting. Simple and grand is best, to avoid being overly cluttered.”
Qin Yun put her foot down, clasped her hands over her knees, and changed her sitting posture. She slightly pouted, perhaps a little disappointed. Finally, she steered the topic toward me: “Are you a Fine Arts graduate?”
“Mhm. I originally studied animation design, but any industry related to pen and ink relies entirely on passion, and it couldn’t support me, so I often take on private jobs to make ends meet.”
“Then, can you do interior design?”
“I can, but I’m not specialized. However, I have designed a few houses. If you have time, I can show you some sample drawings…”
Hearing this, Qin Yun picked up a notebook from the coffee table and swiftly wrote down an address: “Since you can take private jobs, I’ll give you an opportunity. The price is negotiable, and I definitely won’t let you lose out.”
Ah! Was this a pie dropping from the sky? She tore off the page and handed it to me. I took it hesitantly and glanced at it. Her handwriting was beautiful. However, after recognizing the address, I countered with some difficulty: “This… you want to renovate a house?”
“Yes.”
“Isn’t it risky to hire a novice like me?”
Hearing my words, Qin Yun smiled and shook her head: “I really don’t know how deep your foundation is. It’s probably because I quite like your wall painting. Let’s try an unconventional approach~”
I scratched my head and smiled sheepishly: “Then… I’ll discuss it with the foreman. His construction team is definitely reliable. I’ll help you supervise the material selection. I guarantee you’ll be satisfied with the quality and price.”
Qin Yun smiled, stood up, and walked directly to the desk, picking up her handbag: “Let’s go.”
“Right now?”
“Why not? It’s best not to delay things once they are scheduled. I’ll have the foreman hire someone else for the company’s wall painting. You focus solely on my house. I’ll pay you for both jobs when the time comes.”
“Deal! Happy cooperation!”
I was secretly delighted. Calculated this way, this private job wouldn’t be for nothing. I’d ask the foreman for another commission; the income would be substantial!!! The little calculations in my heart were already clicking loudly! Sitting in an imported BMW was different, and she had yogurt prepared in the central console, repeatedly asking if I wanted some. Then, she turned the steering wheel and focused on the road ahead.
A female boss like Qin Yun was not the typical iron-willed woman depicted in novels and movies. She wasn’t stingy with words, nor was she humorless. She was easygoing and intellectual. Describing her only as beautiful felt like a lack of vocabulary. She knew I was reserved, so once we were in the car, she immediately started a conversation. After a long roundabout discussion, we returned to the topic of the cat.
However, this time, I was the one who asked: “You see me feeding the cat often?”
The car stopped at a traffic light. She tilted her head slightly, looking at me seriously, and nodded without hesitation: “Yes. The most memorable time was… do you remember the rainy day a week ago? You were standing under the tree when the weather suddenly changed and it started pouring. I was waiting in the car for someone, and I watched your little show. I kept calculating when you would leave. You were holding the cat close and just standing there soaking wet, not moving or going anywhere.”
“I kept wondering why you were doing that. What was the meaning? Then I noticed that most of the time, you appear under the tree in the evening, sometimes late at night. It’s something that is trivial and irrelevant to me, yet I recorded it deeply and calculated the time, waiting for you to show up.”
“So, yesterday, my curiosity finally exploded. I just wanted to get closer, to see you and the cat you were feeding, to see what was so special about you two that made me so curious. That’s why I stopped the car and asked you, ‘If you like it so much, why don’t you take it home?'”
I put my hands behind my head and answered the question directly, also without hesitation: “I can’t take responsibility for a life that suddenly appears. I am a selfish person, afraid of breaking my living habits due to external factors, so all I can do is this much.”
My reason was sufficient. Briefly summarized, I was afraid of trouble, so I didn’t want to keep a cat. Qin Yun understood my meaning and countered: “Unknowingly, this has developed steadily and become your habit, hasn’t it?”
May 20, 2009, early summer in Beijing. The wind blowing in from the car window was just right. The perfume in the car was just the right concentration. The view from the fifteenth floor was just right. I was using food to amuse the mother cat, and she was standing at the window overlooking me. Everything was just right, exactly as one would wish.
…
“Doctor, shouldn’t she get an IV drip? Are pills enough? Is this person going to die?”
Hearing my complaint, You Feifan stared at me mournfully. The doctor, visibly annoyed, slammed the prescription slip onto the table: “Are you the doctor or am I the doctor? Medication is enough for a cold and fever. What else do you want?”
The doctor’s attitude was terrible; he shut me up instantly. I helped You Feifan out of the consultation room. She tugged at my sleeve and whispered, “You got scolded.”
I impatiently waved her hand away: “I know!”
“Then why didn’t you talk back?”
“Aren’t there enough problems already?”
“I was just trying to lighten the mood!”
“I’m telling you, if your fever isn’t gone by tomorrow, you can come to the hospital for a shot yourself. I won’t take care of you anymore…”
You Feifan was wrapped up like a human zongzi by me. To be precise, her clothing hindered her movement speed. She was struggling to shuffle toward me: “You’re yelling at me again… Don’t walk so fast… I can’t keep up… Slow down…”
I suddenly stopped, turned around, and glared at her: “I got scolded. Who was that because of?”
She spread her arms, swayed them, and then pointed to herself: “Me!”
“Then shouldn’t I be yelling at you?”
“Yes, you should!”
“Then there you have it!”
You Feifan followed behind me like a child who had done something wrong. Just then, my phone rang. I looked at the name on the screen and instructed her: “Hurry up and roll into the car and wait…”
She stretched her neck and protested: “You’re yelling at me again!”
I pointed to the hospital and asked righteously, “Shouldn’t I?”
She instantly became a deflated balloon, weakly replying, “Y-yes, you should…”
I found that a sickly You Feifan was quite amusing. She had a good temper, was patient, and did exactly what she was told. This reminded me of the cat under the tree many years ago—obediently blinking its eyes and bowing its head. Once she was in the car, I answered the phone: “Everything is going smoothly. We’ve arrived in Daocheng, but we have a small issue that will delay us for a few days. How are things on your end?”
“…..”
“That’s good. I want to relax for a while. I’m leaving the company to you.”
“…..”
“You don’t need to send me the detailed information I requested for now. By the way… if it’s convenient for you, I need some shipping containers… Yes… transport them to that school. Please coordinate it. I’ll be there soon.”
After hanging up, I looked back at the car. You Feifan was breathing onto the window, doodling crooked little figures. When she saw me looking at her, she quickly breathed on the glass again and drew a smiley face. I thought she hadn’t grown up and was like a child. That was good; at least her smile was pure, and her heart was a warm red.
Just as I was thinking this, she wrote “SB” next to the smiley face. I immediately retracted my previous compliment. This person’s need to be spanked made me want to step on her and rub her back and forth on the ground! I slapped my hand on the car window, startling her. With my other hand, I made a gesture of slitting my own throat. The probable message I wanted to convey was: “You brat, don’t get cocky! Be careful, I might just kill you!”
Returning to the driver’s seat, You Feifan asked listlessly, “Are we going back to the hotel now?”
“What else? Or should I take you bar-hopping tonight and declare you critically ill tomorrow?”
You Feifan flailed her arms and complained, “Why do you always bully me!?”
I could see her about to flare up in the rearview mirror, so I teased her: “You’re like a ball, the kind of thick-skinned ball that can’t be burst by a needle.”
She pouted and asked unconvinced, “What does that mean?”
I turned around and looked at her: “It means I’m complimenting your good temper. Look at your fair, pretty face—it’s been worn down by sickness. Let your older sister touch it~ I’m afraid you might have altitude sickness. Come on, come on, have a piece of chocolate to cheer up.”
