Chapter 26: Six Months Ago (The End). “Woman Flower”
After going in and out several times, I finally finished meticulously arranging the bedroom. I checked the time; I had to hurry so my wife could have hot, delicious soup as soon as she got home! With that thought, I plunged back into the kitchen. I genuinely felt I had a talent for cooking; at least, the dishes were always excellent in color, aroma, and taste. Maybe I should find time to sign up for an advanced cooking class or something, just to learn more tricks to please the Lan mother and daughter~
I put the steamed spareribs with rice powder into the steamer and scooped some soup into a small bowl to taste. It had been stewing all afternoon, and the marrow from the bones had seeped out, blending with the sweetness of the corn. I put down the bowl and, mimicking Jin Xing, gave a standard “perfect” gesture.
Just then, my phone vibrated in my pocket. I wiped my hands on my apron and pulled out the phone. The screen showed an unfamiliar number. I frowned suspiciously as I answered. What the person said next astonished me. The deliberate voice changer made it impossible to tell if the caller was male or female: “You Feifan.”
I narrowed my eyes in alert and asked, “Who are you?”
“Are you satisfied with the photos sent to you?”
So, it was one of Guan Shuyun’s people. I chuckled contemptuously and said confidently, “Tell your boss to stop using these filthy methods to harass me. I won’t believe those trash photos, and they won’t shake me! Tell her to give up!”
“Hahahahaha… You are so naive… and truly an unbelievably cowardly person. You don’t know what your woman is doing outside, you can’t control her, and you still have to deceive yourself… Pitiful and sad… By the way, have you heard the story of the last straw?”
With that, the call ended with a busy signal. I stared blankly at the screen. Why could a stranger’s few words make me so angry? I threw the phone onto the table, almost trembling. These past few days, I had pretended not to care, but I was truly unhappy.
I silently lifted my head and walked somewhat numbly to the stove, placing the turbot into the steamer. Turning around, I carried the side dishes and turned the heat up to stir-fry. Following the order, I poured the chicken pieces in, opened a can of beer, took a huge gulp, and then poured the rest into the pot. I covered it with the lid, then leaned against the doorway to smoke a cigarette and relieve the fatigue.
The kitchen was next to the garden. The life balcony surrounding it was where I stored jars of pickles and fermented vegetables. From the life balcony, one could see the garden gate. I saw the black Mercedes G-Class drive into the garden. I quickly tossed the cigarette butt. It was Phoebe’s car, unmistakable. My mood shifted instantly; the moment I saw her, I would forget the unpleasantness from moments ago.
Turning off the stove, I rushed into the living room without even removing my apron. I rummaged through the coffee table for a moment and finally found a box of gum I had left over. I smoothed my hair using the glass top of the coffee table as a mirror before rushing toward the door. Phoebe beat me to opening it, but my “hi” was caught in my throat.
The person who opened the door was Guan Shuyun. She was holding Phoebe horizontally in her arms. Phoebe’s expression wasn’t good. I looked down at her feet and saw that her right high heel was missing. I frowned slightly and asked cautiously, trailing behind them, “What happened? Did you sprain your ankle?”
Phoebe reached out to wrap her arms around Guan Shuyun’s neck. Seeing that image would make anyone feel uncomfortable. She didn’t answer my question, just shook her head silently. Guan Shuyun’s face was expressionless, but she spoke nonchalantly: “I insisted that Phoebe stop by my place after entering the neighborhood. It’s my fault. The threshold I had installed was too high. Phoebe wasn’t paying attention when she left. She was walking too fast, nearly stumbled, and accidentally sprained her ankle. So, I hurried to bring her back.”
Walking to the sofa, I helped Phoebe sit down, then turned to Guan Shuyun and said coolly, “After being on a business trip for almost a month, you’re finally back. Everyone wants to rush home to rest. Is your house so close to our garden that it was absolutely necessary to have tea today?”
Guan Shuyun raised her eyebrows, a smile in her eyes: “After all, as long as General Manager Lan and I are in business cooperation, our official matters will never be finished.”
“Feifan, my ankle is fine, don’t say another word. General Manager Guan, you should go back now that you’re done.”
Phoebe said testily. The more she spoke so lightly, the more the anger flared in my chest. Guan Shuyun was doing this on purpose. The first time she brought Phoebe back, I didn’t see her strength being this great. Now she could princess-carry Phoebe. Who was she showing off to? Even if her ankle was sprained, a phone call to me would have sufficed. The two villas aren’t far apart. Did she have to deliberately assault my eyes like this?
I turned to look at Guan Shuyun, losing the last bit of my patience and discarding the supposed trust. I had no intention of letting this matter pass easily today. I ground out a sentence between my teeth: “Guan Shuyun, we need to talk.”
Hearing my words, Phoebe’s icy aura instantly dropped the temperature in the room. She lowered her voice: “You Feifan, do you still think there aren’t enough problems?”
Guan Shuyun’s hypocrisy was reaching its peak. She naturally adopted a generous, indifferent demeanor, walking toward Phoebe and squatting down to console her: “It’s fine. Feifan probably misunderstood something. If she wants to talk, let’s talk.”
I walked to the kitchen entrance and looked back at them. I felt a nausea I hadn’t felt before. I felt like an outsider, as if I were the one disturbing them. I said angrily, “Stop stalling!”
Phoebe didn’t try to stop me again. She closed her eyes wearily, resting on the sofa. Guan Shuyun stood up and walked toward me. We stood in the kitchen. She dropped her mask of hypocrisy, revealing her true self to me. That smirk of the petty victor was sickening to look at: “What do you want to talk about? What do you want to know? Our time on the business trip was very happy. Just as you heard on the phone, Phoebe was very happy.”
“I’m warning you, stay away from her! She is my girlfriend. Do you think your status as a mistress is decent?”
“Mistress? Humph… You Feifan… Wouldn’t saying that hurt Phoebe’s feelings? But I admit, I am a homewrecker. The angrier you get, the happier I am. What can you do to me?”
“What can I do to her?” That phrase wounded me deeply. I was always helpless in the face of Guan Shuyun’s appearance, only comforting myself with the word ‘trust.’ Today, what I saw was what I least wanted to see. Phoebe didn’t step up to explain anything. She even let me throw a tantrum here without saying another word.
So, I grabbed a dish and smashed it at Guan Shuyun’s feet: “Don’t make me do something extreme!”
Guan Shuyun looked at me with disappointment, then broke into a sudden laugh: “Right… that’s all you’re capable of…”
Hearing the crash, Phoebe appeared in the doorway on her sprained ankle. She gripped the doorframe, looking furious: “You Feifan, enough! Don’t lose control. General Manager Guan, you should go back too.”
Guan Shuyun seemed to obey Phoebe. She started to leave, but I raised my hand and stopped her with a grab, saying with a sneer, “We haven’t started talking yet. Don’t rush off…”
Phoebe yelled sharply: “Does this look like you’re talking things out? Or are you going to tear this kitchen apart?”
I turned my head, pursing my lips, and looked at Phoebe with a scrutinizing gaze. She remained unmoved. I was waiting for her to speak, even if she told a lie to brush me off, I would have dropped this fight. But she maintained her silence from beginning to end. I was utterly disappointed. I finally believed that the Phoebe with the beautiful smiling face in those photos—her happiness was not given by me. I was just a discarded toy.
For the first time, I utterly loathed Phoebe’s cold attitude. Was it because my temper was too docile that I was always the one being bullied? Or, as Guan Shuyun said, was this world just not meant for me to play in? I turned to Phoebe, asking with a hint of sarcasm, “So, you were on a business trip with her for a month. Where did you go, and what did you do? Can you give me an explanation?”
“That’s work business. I don’t want to explain further. I am now ordering you to let General Manager Guan leave.”
“You’re protecting her even now, aren’t you? What if I don’t let her go?”
As soon as the words left my mouth, Phoebe grabbed her phone in a practiced, fluid motion. She was about to summon her tall, muscular bodyguards again. The person she was going to use them against was me, the person she had lived with for many years. I lunged forward and slapped the phone out of her hand. Phoebe’s eyes widened in panic. Guan Shuyun tried to stop my absurd behavior, but I fiercely pushed her away. The impact caused her to knock over the meticulously prepared meal, which crashed to the floor, creating a jarring sound. The kitchen was instantly a mess.
I grabbed Phoebe and pushed her toward the life balcony, then quickly turned and locked her outside. Guan Shuyun was stunned by my actions. She looked at me like I was a madwoman running wild, but she didn’t seem shocked at all. Instead, the mockery at the corner of her mouth deepened. She showed no intention of fleeing and casually leaned against the counter: “Now I finally understand why a fool like Qiao An lost to a lunatic like you…”
I knew perfectly well that every word she spoke was deliberately meant to provoke me. I desperately tried to stop myself from getting physical, but I still grabbed her collar. She tilted her head up, looking down at me, and slowly articulated:
“You are a convicted felon with a record for attempted murder. Do you know what that says about you? A dog can never change its nature.”
The small fruit knife that was sitting on the counter was within easy reach. I reached out for it…
