Chapter 24: On the Verge of Collapse. “Lovers’ Classroom”
What Feijun said was very reasonable, and I had no response, so I just nodded in silence. After handing the seafood over to the waiter for preparation, the two of us took the opportunity to step outside by the roadside to smoke and rest. Feijun stared at Su Wei in the distance with an expression I simply couldn’t imitate. He seemed unable to see even his own son, focusing solely on his beloved wife. Tapping the cigarette ash, Feijun spoke with a hint of pride:
“The luckiest thing that ever happened to me in this life was marrying Su Wei. She loves freedom so much, yet she paused for me, giving up traveling the entire world, and even gave birth to a big, healthy son. Who needs the ‘three obedience and four virtues’? I only ask her to do what she loves and to love the person she loves. I’m genuinely afraid that my existence might restrict her desires, so I am content with this satisfaction.”
“But you and Phoebe are different. You both have problems that the other cannot resolve. Coupled with Phoebe’s cold temperament, conflicts are inevitable and easily triggered. But the happiness and joy that life brings are always greater than the pain. If you feel your current life is monotonous and boring, feel free to jump out of this rut and just do things that belong to you. And don’t worry about Qing Fan’s growth; we all love her very much!”
“Thank you, Second Brother.”
“After dinner, play with the kids for a while. I’ll join you for a drink later.”
“Oh, I appreciate the thought, but you should focus on making babies!”
Extinguishing our cigarettes, we returned to the table. Su Wei looked up at us, speaking sharply like a head of the household: “You two move over. You reek of smoke. Be careful not to fumigate the children!”
The moment Su Wei finished speaking, Feijun already had mint lozenges out of one pocket. And out of the other pocket, he pulled out Six Gods Floral Water (a strong, cooling mosquito repellent)! I had just taken a sip of tea and choked hard. Such strict household rules!
“Yay! Shrimp!”
The children excitedly applauded as the food arrived. I sat down next to Qing Fan again and peeled shrimp for her. The little one suddenly felt the urge to share her happiness with her mother. I smiled and called Phoebe…
The phone connected quickly: “Feifan?”
“Wife~”
The little one grabbed the phone, practically biting the mouthpiece: “Mama!”
“Is our little princess being obedient today?”
“Mama, Mama, Mama~ I’m very obedient!”
I quickly shoved a shrimp into Qing Fan’s mouth and pulled the phone back: “Qing Fan really wants to see you. I called to ask if it was convenient for a video call.”
Phoebe replied with a light chuckle: “Sure.”
“Wait for me~”
Hanging up, I quickly opened the WeChat video call. Phoebe wasn’t slow either. Looking at her refined face on the screen, my heart suddenly became as calm as water. Just seeing her made me happy. Su Wei and Feijun also squeezed in, and Qing Fan kept planting greasy little kisses on the screen.
After chatting for a while, I took the phone and walked to a less crowded area. Phoebe stared at me quietly and suddenly said, “Why have you lost weight again?”
“Maybe all my energy is being used to think of you!”
“If you’re like this after only one day apart, what will happen later?”
“I’ll just have to endure it! When you come back, I’m going to hug you like a koala and not let go!”
“Alright, alright, I’ll allow it all~”
“Wife~ You should rest early! I won’t bother you anymore~”
“So obedient? Not going to keep pestering me for a while?”
“Oh, the more I look at you, the more I miss you. What am I supposed to do?”
“Okay, I’m hanging up. I have to see a big client first thing tomorrow morning.”
“Wife, good night~”
“Good night.”
“Wife! Wait!”
Phoebe raised her eyebrows, looking at me curiously: “What is it?”
“There are countless good medicines in this world, but only you are the most effective. You are my sleeping pill, my cold medicine, and my aphrodisiac~”
Phoebe raised her hand to cover her mouth, trying not to laugh out loud: “Can you be any cheesier?”
“Yes~”
“You are the most mischievous one. Alright, go eat quickly! I love you!”
How rare! Phoebe seldom took the initiative to say “I love you.” I beamed: “Mhm! I love you too!”
…
Late at night. After settling the two children to sleep, I deliberately bought a few cans of beer to enjoy some rare late-night solitude. Sitting in the lounge chair, accompanied by the now-cool sea breeze, taking a sip of beer—life was wonderful! My phone chimed with a notification. I slowly picked it up to see what it was.
A new email wasn’t strange; there was so much spam these days. I thought about it and clicked on the email to clear it, but the subject line caught my eye: ‘You will surely be interested.’ Intrigued, I clicked it open, and a string of photos began to load.
Intimate photos of Guan Shuyun and Phoebe once again appeared in my sight. Phoebe was wearing the same outfit as in our video call. What was the purpose of this email? To tell me that Guan Shuyun was also traveling with Phoebe on her business trip?
Guan Shuyun was truly disgusting, using such tricks to sow discord. I wouldn’t fall for this. I took a hard gulp of beer, tossing the empty can aside. Truthfully, I was terrified, so I avoided it. I didn’t scroll through all the pictures, choosing instead to delete them. But quickly, the same unfamiliar number sent another email: ‘It gets more exciting every day!’
I replied very calmly with a simple, sparse ‘Who are you,’ but the message sank like a stone; my phone went silent. I stood up by the window, staring at the dark sea, which looked like the deep, bottomless mouth of a giant beast, with crises lurking in the dark current. I laughed at myself, the sound swallowed by the waves. The useless one has always been me. Who else is there to blame?
I didn’t know how to fight back against the threat Guan Shuyun posed. She was like this vast ocean, effortlessly eroding the love I prided myself on, and I was helpless. My powerlessness made me weak. I couldn’t protect anything, not even Phoebe…
And so, every night at exactly midnight, I received a photo. Although Phoebe looked innocent in the pictures, my heart was tormented. Every day, I repeated the resolute lines of Liu Yue’e to console myself. I had to believe her. I never doubted her, yet with each passing day, the firm belief I had built developed a new crack, like a pane of glass covered in fractures, ready to shatter with the slightest breeze.
After the short vacation ended, I left Qing Fan with Su Wei for help and locked myself at home, rarely going out. I even stopped using my phone excessively. It was all to avoid those glaring candid photos. It seemed the person sending me these photos knew all my movements. Since I returned, the photos reappeared in the form of express deliveries, without missing a single day.
I still maintained a daily phone call with Phoebe to ensure she was safe, allowing me to finally fall into a restless sleep in the early hours of the morning. I drifted through the days, counting them listlessly. Life could be this difficult, so difficult that I felt like a patient suffering from depression. My nerves were on the verge of collapse…
…
At three in the morning, the two of us, travelers in distress, finally arrived safely in Kangding. Although Qiu Qi looked tired, she could still hum: “On the horse-racing mountains, there is a floating cloud~” Any traveler coming to this small city probably automatically plays the BGM of the Kangding Love Song!
Walking into the room, I collapsed onto the bed. The comfortable mattress made me groan in agony: “Don’t touch me! Let me have a passionate love affair with this bed!”
Qiu Qi kicked off her shoes and immediately kicked my backside repeatedly: “Go take a shower!”
“You go first! I’m sleeping until I wake up naturally tomorrow, or I’m staying put!”
“I’m the one who drove, and I’m not complaining about being tired. What are you tired about?”
Qiu Qi kicked me hard again. I painfully rolled off the bed and looked at her resentfully: “Can’t you be a little more gentle and considerate?”
Qiu Qi stared at me with an expression of intense disdain: “I seriously suspect that when you were with your ex, you were the submissive one!”
“You’re the submissive one!”
“…Gentle and considerate… I think you just have a handsome face for nothing, or you’re more delicate than I am, a girl…”
“Peh! I’m spitting half a kilo of saliva at you!”
