Chapter 102: Villain P · “The Sound of Falling Snow”
“Miss You, sorry to trouble you again.”
The doctor had just finished his rounds when Officer Jiang knocked and entered. Phoebe was preparing the breakfast sent by the family chef and asked politely, “Have you eaten, Officer Jiang? Would you like to join us?”
Clearly, she was a person of strict business. She immediately waved off the invitation. “I’ve already eaten. I don’t want to take up too much of Miss You’s rest time, so I’ll get straight to the point.”
Phoebe set out a chair for her to sit. Officer Jiang took a file and a pen from her briefcase and began reviewing my ordeal. “We’ve cordoned off the crime scene and arrested several thugs injured by your bodyguard. The man who kidnapped you is a cancer in this city’s underworld; his name is Nian Buhe. I hope that in the coming days, Miss You will cooperate with me fully. Our department will also dispatch officers to ensure your safety. And Miss Lan, please be careful as well—desperadoes don’t blink when it comes to killing.”
Phoebe frowned slightly. I hadn’t expected things to become so abruptly complicated. Before I could speak, Phoebe took the lead. “Officer Jiang, I don’t quite understand. What exactly did Feifan do to provoke both the mob and the police?”
“That starts with Lan Feichun. He’s your eldest brother; you should know something about him.”
“I’m afraid I’ll disappoint you,” Phoebe replied. “Since the family assets were split, I’ve had almost no contact with him. The last time we met was years ago.”
Jiang Cha tilted her head, scrutinizing Phoebe, then raised an eyebrow and smiled as she shifted the topic. “Right, I checked; you indeed have very little contact with him. Back to the point: Nian Buhe procured a batch of imported goods for Qiao Xin and Lan Feichun. The goods themselves aren’t fake, but they were smuggled. Now, you might ask—would a mob boss personally move against Miss You just for some smuggled goods?
“There were eight containers in total. Their market value is over a hundred million, but that’s not the real reason. Those containers held something Miss You didn’t know about. We seized over 100 kilograms of No. 4 Diacetylmorphine (Heroin) with a purity of at least 90%. You can imagine the severity of the crime from those numbers. I can’t reveal too much, so I’ll stop there.
“Do you understand now? The smuggled imports existed, but they were a front for the other ‘cargo.’ The information provided by informants mentioned two women named Sister Hong and Sister Lian. They suddenly gained Lan Feichun’s favor and were constantly serving at his side. I followed that lead; their criminal records naturally linked back to you.”
I couldn’t wrap my head around it. I muttered, “Even if that Nian Buhe is involved in drugs, why point the finger at me?”
Jiang Cha stared at the file in her hand, marking things with her pen. She asked casually, “Think carefully—did those two cellmates of yours provide you with any specific information?”
I reacted instantly, feeling a surge of excitement. “Yes! A list! They said it was a list of Lan Feichun’s network and connections!”
Hearing this, Jiang Cha snapped her head up and stared at me, confirming once more: “Are you sure? They gave you a list?”
“Yes! And Nian Buhe’s name was on that list!”
Jiang Cha took her phone and hurried out like a whirlwind. Phoebe remained silent, her lips pursed. I looked at her sideways. “It seems I’ve dragged you into a very serious mess. I’m sorry.”
She shook her head and comforted me. “Silly! If it’s really unsafe, we’ll go to Germany to lie low. We have everything there; there’s no need to worry.”
A moment later, Officer Jiang returned to the ward. She said anxiously, “Miss You, I need that list.”
“My phone is gone. I need a mobile phone.”
Phoebe handed me her phone. I habitually searched for Old A’s webpage while listening to Officer Jiang continue: “Additionally, regarding Qiao Xin’s illegal use of torture against you—we don’t know yet if she participated in Nian Buhe’s drug case, but smuggling, kidnapping, and torture are three charges enough to put her away. You can sue her at any time, and our department will follow the judicial process.”
“She’s a foreigner,” I said. “If I sue her, won’t there be all sorts of legal protections for her?”
Jiang Cha straightened her back and replied solemnly, “Regardless of race or nationality, anyone who violates the laws within our borders will be handled according to the law—barring specific cases of diplomatic immunity. We will pursue administrative and criminal liability. In your case, which involved personal and property damage, Qiao Xin must also bear civil liability.”
Despite Qiao Xin’s downfall, there was no joy on Phoebe’s face. She walked up to the officer and demanded, “What use is all this talk? Where is Qiao Xin now? Have you caught her? Is Nian Buhe behind bars? And where is Lan Feichun? You’ve explained the severity of the situation clearly, but the whereabouts of the criminals remain vague.”
Jiang Cha was speechless, her jaw tightening in silence. Finally, she looked at me. “The case is complex. Miss You, please get that list to me as soon as possible. As for Miss Lan’s questions… Qiao Xin and Nian Buhe are at large. Your eldest brother is already under police control.”
“At large?! That means Feifan is still in danger.”
“Miss Lan, please remain calm! My team will be here shortly to provide 24-hour protection for Miss You. Please rest assured on that.”
“I don’t need your people,” Phoebe countered. “I will have my own bodyguards watching her. I only hope you do your utmost to capture those villains. Otherwise, no one can live in peace while constantly looking over their shoulder.”
Though I had only met this Officer Jiang twice, her composure didn’t match her youthful face. To become a deputy captain at such an age, she clearly had the strength to back it up. I smiled and waved. “I’ll send the list later. You have a heavy workload; we won’t keep you. If you encounter any thorny issues in the investigation where I can help, feel free to find me. I will cooperate fully.”
“Thank you for your understanding, Miss You.”
As Officer Jiang left again, the atmosphere in the room turned eerie. Something occurred to me, and I hurriedly asked Phoebe, “Wait! Sister Hong—where is Sister Hong?”
Seeing my agitation, Phoebe quickly spoke up. “She’s also in this hospital. It’s just… when you were brought in together for emergency treatment, she had been beaten into a deep coma by Nian Buhe’s men. She hasn’t woken up yet. I was afraid you’d worry, so I kept it from you.”
I stared at Phoebe in shock, then hurriedly threw back the blankets to get out of bed. “It shouldn’t have been like this. It shouldn’t… She ended up like this because she helped me. I have to see her… and Sister Lian… Qiao Xin said she betrayed us… I have to find her!”
Phoebe scrambled to stop me. “Calm down! I know a bit about the situation, and I’ve already sent Lin Chen to find people. For now, don’t think about anything. Just focus on getting better, okay?”
“In this game of chess, the pieces are falling, but it wasn’t supposed to end like this! Who knew we’d accidentally collide with a drug lord? I just wanted to bring down Qiao Xin’s clique, and now I’ve hurt Sister Hong like this. How am I supposed to face her and her family?”
During my stay, my friends visited several times with fruit. Unlike in the past, I didn’t have the heart to laugh and joke with them. They noticed my change, and the resulting sense of distance made everyone uncomfortable. Eventually, they followed my lead—coming only for short sits and leaving quickly after a few words.
Phoebe saw my depression but had no way to cheer me up. Every night, she made time to massage my body, repeatedly asking if I was uncomfortable, terrified that I had sustained some permanent damage. My appetite was poor, and I frequently felt nauseous, but despite full-body checkups every few days, the doctors found nothing wrong. I couldn’t occupy a hospital bed forever, so on a sunny weekend, Phoebe reluctantly handled the discharge paperwork.
…
I sat in Phoebe’s car with nothing but a backpack of clothes. She sat in the driver’s seat for a long time without starting the engine, leaning on the steering wheel in silence. I looked at her, confused. “What’s wrong?”
She pleaded sorrowfully, “Can you please not go? Come home with me.”
I didn’t have much emotion left and didn’t want to get tangled in these trivialities. I looked out the window and refused her calmly. “No.”
Perhaps she still wasn’t used to my cold attitude. After another silent standoff, she sighed. “I’ve already had Lin Chen stationed outside the Guan estate.”
She took the ring from her bag, wiped it with her sleeve, and slipped it onto my finger. “Fortunately, I saw it on the floor that day. Your reckless ways are both infuriating and helpless. I always say I can’t do anything with you—it used to be a joke, but now I truly have no other choice.”
With a touch of my old bossy energy, I reached out and pulled Phoebe’s shoulder toward me, resting my chin in the crook of her neck. I breathed in the comforting scent that always put me at ease.
“Before, I was always giving you guarantees. Guaranteeing that I loved you, guaranteeing that I’d keep our home perfect so you wouldn’t have to worry or work hard. Now, I can’t give you guarantees. I take responsibility for what I do. Shuyun… I owe her an explanation. So, I must go.”
Phoebe looked into my eyes. Finally, she smiled, and then she cried. I could feel the complex emotions behind it. Her voice was raspy, her tone filled with suppressed pain, and the tremor in her breath carried an unknown fear:
“Before this moment, I was never afraid that someone could take you away from me. But at this moment… I see that in your eyes, there isn’t just me. There is someone else—someone who is so much like me, and who treated you even better than I did… so I’m afraid… I’m afraid…”
From a neutral and objective standpoint, I responded to her words: “Setting aside the grievances… occasionally I think… compared to you, she really is more suitable for me. Here was a person I had a conflict with, yet she gave me respect, recognition, guidance, and care. There’s no reason not to have feelings for someone like that.”
