Chapter 5: Where’s the Officer? The Officer Slipped Away First!
Inside the interrogation room, a single overhead light cast a narrow, scattered glow. The areas beyond its reach remained shrouded in darkness, making the windowless, airtight space feel utterly boundless and oppressive.
In reality, Zhou Sui’s social circle in the physical education department consisted of hot-blooded young men in their twenties. They occasionally got into harmless scuffles, so he was no stranger to police stations. However, this was his first time inside a formal, high-security interrogation room like this.
“Uncle, did I really do something that big?” Zhou Sui had been enduring the grueling session for so long that the heavy black wooden table in front of him started to feel like it was floating.
Old Wang gave a mock scoff. “That depends on whether you tell the truth later. Withholding information or harboring a criminal… those aren’t small charges.”
Zhou Sui looked ready to cry. “I’ve told you everything I can say!”
“You kid…” Old Wang slammed his hand on the table, but before he could finish his threat, the “creak” of a heavy iron door interrupted him.
A sliver of light pierced into the cage-like interrogation room. The man who walked in wasn’t even wearing a uniform, yet his every movement seemed ten parts relaxed within this steel fortress of a prison.
He didn’t look approachable. When his gaze swept over them, it felt like a heavy, oppressive blade cutting through the dim cage.
“And what about the things you can’t say?”
His voice wasn’t loud, but it was clear enough for everyone inside to hear.
Zhou Sui froze for a moment before lowering his head unnaturally. “There… there isn’t anything I can’t say! What I ‘can’t say’ is just stuff I don’t know!”
Officer Pei, who had seen countless cunning criminals, was actually amused to the point of laughter by this. “Does this thing really require a lie detector?”
Pei Qingshan walked in, his hard-soled leather boots thudding heavily against the floor.
By the time they snapped out of it, Old Wang and the other interrogator had instinctively stood up and yielded their chairs in one smooth, practiced motion.
The man seemed to have no intention of introducing himself; he simply sat down with a broad, commanding posture.
Wait, who is this guy?
Old Wang cleared his throat, preparing to step forward and inquire—when the iron door was suddenly pushed open in a hurry.
“Oh my, what a surprise visit!”
The usually elusive and “Iron-Blooded” Captain Li squeezed out a smile that made his face wrinkle like a kind grandfather. He personally carried a paper cup, the chrysanthemum tea inside swirling gently with his nimble steps. “You must be thirsty after interrogating for so long, right?”
Old Wang: “…”
Aren’t we the ones who should be thirsty?!
Pei Qingshan didn’t look particularly pleased with Captain Li, making the Captain’s eager smile nearly falter.
It’s early morning; who ticked him off already?
Pei Qingshan pushed the tea forward a bit. Staring at Zhou Sui’s visibly parched, twitching lips, he jerked his chin. “Want a drink?”
It wasn’t until this officer—who looked like an international supermodel pushed the water toward him that Zhou Sui finally felt the overwhelming thirst drowning his senses. His dark eyes quivered slightly under the overhead light.
“Drink slowly, no one’s going to snatch it look at those dark circles. What’s the matter, didn’t sleep well last night?” Pei Qingshan’s voice was calm, as if they were just having a casual chat.
The top-grade chrysanthemum tea—which Captain Li had personally dried after plucking the flowers bald from the garden aunts’ bushes—was gulped down by Zhou Sui in two or three swigs. The faint, floral scent lingering in his mouth finally soothed his frayed nerves. His parched lips twitched nervously. “After what happened… who could sleep, Officer?”
Pei Qingshan sat with his arms crossed, remaining silent. That cold, silent gaze made Zhou Sui tremble with unease.
“What exactly happened? Tell it again from the beginning, and don’t leave out a single detail,” Old Wang tapped the table.
The sun outside grew brighter, but not a single ray of light could penetrate this fortified iron cage.
Logically, since he and Wen Zhu had driven back to the city so conspicuously last night, the surveillance cameras should have caught them. But seeing how the police were still clueless, Zhou Sui figured the “bold-as-brass” Professor Wen had worked some of his magic. Thus, Zhou Sui’s lies began to flow as smooth as water.
“By the time I woke up, I was already standing at the door,” Zhou Sui finished his last sip of water, his throat still feeling dry.
Old Wang stroked his chin, feeling that this case was shrouded in a fog with no discernible logic. “According to the student’s story, we really can’t rule out an internal struggle between ‘Abnormalities.’ This feels like the work of a mental-type.”
“If that’s the case, why were you the only one spared?” Pei Qingshan asked flatly. “Tell me, what extraordinary ability do you have?”
“How should I know?” Zhou Sui guessed. “Maybe because I’m easy on the eyes.”
Zhou Sui was indeed good-looking; he was considered a campus heartthrob in the PE department. With his deep-set eyes and high brow, he looked like he might have some ethnic minority heritage.
However, no one present took his comment seriously.
Everyone knew that monsters didn’t have aesthetics; they only had appetites.
“How’s the questioning going?” Captain Li stood at the door and knocked, his expression serious. “A teacher from Lin-Da (Linjing University) is here to take the student back.”
Old Wang held his thermos and sighed. “It’s about done. What he knows is…”
“A load of nonsense,” Pei Qingshan interjected without turning his head. His words were concise: “Make them wait.”
Even though the officer in front of him showed no expression, Zhou Sui felt like a gazelle on the savanna being locked on by a hungry lion. His scalp tingled.
Just as the words left Pei Qingshan’s mouth, hurried footsteps echoed from the corridor.
“Hey, sir—hey, Teacher… you can’t go in there according to the rules.”
“I heard a student from our school was caught in a violent crime yesterday. Is he the victim?”
“Huh? Uh, I guess so.”
“Pardon me, but I am very worried about my student. Officer, it has been several hours, and the questioning should be finished. Is it not time to let the victim return to school to rest, or perhaps go to a hospital for psychological counseling?”
The teacher from Lin-Da spoke politely, but his tone was incredibly forceful.
Upon hearing Wen Zhu’s voice, Zhou Sui instantly turned into a teary-eyed Golden Retriever, looking toward the door with longing.
Old Wang looked toward the sound. Hearing the footsteps getting closer, he knew the useless Captain Li hadn’t managed to stop the teacher.
“Hey, Officer Officer?” Old Wang turned to ask what to do next, only to see an empty chair. He asked again in shock, “Where is the Officer?”
“In the observation room,” the interrogator said, pointing with a strange expression toward the one-way glass.
Officer Pei, who had spent the whole morning maintaining an air of effortless composure, had completely shattered that image with the way he just scrambled into the observation room.
Weren’t they saying Zhou Sui is a PE student?
So why is Wen Zhu here? He doesn’t even teach PE!
Does Lin-Da have no other teachers?!
Officer Pei ranted a hundred times in his head with a dark face, yet he made sure to hide behind that one-way glass immediately.
He had already had a falling out with Wen Zhu this morning; if he couldn’t explain how a “lowly civil servant” like himself ended up in an interrogation room, his seven-year marriage would truly be over!
Looking at the college student’s pale, pitiful face, Captain Li didn’t have the heart to repeat Pei’s “It’s all nonsense, make them wait” line.
While they were at a stalemate, the phone in Captain Li’s pocket vibrated.
The man who had vanished from the interrogation room sent a leisurely message: “Release him. We’re fishing for the big one.”
Then why didn’t you say so earlier, you bastard!
“Student Zhou, you may return to school with your teacher.”
Captain Li’s attitude softened so suddenly—switching from an unyielding stance to being “kind and approachable” that several of his facial muscles couldn’t keep up, resulting in a bizarre, contradictory expression.
Wen Zhu watched this and raised an eyebrow.
“Please do not leave Linjing for the next month. We may summon you again if the case requires it.”
“The officers are quite efficient,” Zhou Sui remained silent, but the refined university teacher delivered a light, stinging jab.
Captain Li fell silent.
He’s definitely mocking us for not being able to solve the case in a month, isn’t he?
Absolutely.
Wen Zhu ignored Captain Li’s crumbling ego. He stepped forward and tilted Zhou Sui’s chin up, looking left and right. After confirming the fatigue was just from a lack of sleep, he withdrew his hand. “Let’s go. Back to school.”
This time, no one blocked their way out of the room.
As they crossed the iron threshold, Wen Zhu paused. He turned his head toward the dark, glossy section of the wall, locking eyes with Pei Qingshan in the observation room—though, in reality, he couldn’t see anything.
“Teacher?”
“Coming.”
Breathing in the fresh air as the blinding sunlight poured down, Zhou Sui finally felt like he had truly come back to life. He was nearly moved to tears.
“Teacher, don’t worry, the story I made up is absolutely foolproof!” Zhou Sui patted his chest, guaranteeing his performance.
Wen Zhu looked at his confident face and smiled slightly. “Then it wouldn’t have been my turn to come bail you out, you idiot.”
“…”
Zhou Sui recalled the fierce officer’s “nonsense” comment and found himself unable to argue.
Two of a kind, both so biting!
It was hard to tell if it was because Zhou Sui was brooding or if the sunlight was just that intense, but as the light reflected in his pupils, they shimmered with a clear, amber hue.
Zhou Sui turned his head and found Wen Zhu staring at him. That emotionless gaze made Zhou Sui’s scalp tingle.
“Wha… what is it, Professor?”
He’s not planning to dispose of the body, is he?
Please no! Give me one more chance!
In the next second, to Zhou Sui’s horror, Wen Zhu’s slender fingers seized his jaw without a word. He skillfully gripped the bone, forced his lips open, and probed inside his mouth.
Feeling the cold sensation on his tongue, Zhou Sui jolted.
“Don’t move.”
Wen Zhu’s brow furrowed slightly as he pressed down on the trembling root of Zhou Sui’s tongue, his fingertip tracing a circle inside the soft, bright red oral cavity.
No abnormalities.
Wen Zhu mocked himself inwardly, feeling that he had been in a “warm cage” for too long. He was jumping at shadows.
Those eyes were like dark reefs.
Perhaps because the sense of déjà vu from that night was so strong, Zhou Sui could always see a mysterious, indescribable, and terrifying “monster-like” quality in Wen Zhu that others couldn’t see.
When those eyes landed on his face, it felt like being zapped by a remote current a fine, dense numbness. It was as if his body were submerged in a cold solution, yet the flesh beneath his skin was trembling and surging with a violent heat.
Finally, the sensation in his throat vanished.
By the time Zhou Sui snapped out of it, Wen Zhu had already withdrawn his hand and was meticulously cleaning his fingers with a wet wipe from his pocket.
“Teacher, wait for me!”
He rubbed the back of his head in confusion and jogged to catch up with Wen Zhu.
