Chapter 27: Does She Still Want an Osmanthus-Scented Omega?
Qi Ying plucked Guazi, who was trying to climb up her trouser leg, off her clothes. The kitten had clearly grown several sizes; eating well and sleeping well had naturally made him shoot up in height. Before, this kitten would hiss at Qi Ying, but now that he was familiar with her, he had become clingy, nearly fraying her pant leg with his claws.
Qi Ying couldn’t help but pat the little guy’s bottom, earning a tiny “mew” of protest.
Supporting the kitten’s weight, Qi Ying stepped into the house.
The first thing she saw was Xing Xiaochu lying on the sofa, still not “awake.” Feeling puzzled, she walked over and leaned down to look at her. “Why are you sleeping here?”
Xiaochu’s breathing was heavy, and her face was visibly flushed.
Qi Ying instantly sensed something was wrong. She knelt down and touched the girl’s forehead, finding her skin burning hot. She definitely had a fever.
“Xiaochu?” Qi Ying gently rubbed Xiaochu’s face and asked urgently, “You seem to have a fever. Have you been sleeping here since yesterday?”
With her eyes closed, Xiaochu gave a weak, slight nod.
Seeing the girl’s pale face flushed crimson and her forehead slick with sweat while her hands and feet were icy cold, Qi Ying set the cat down and scooped the girl up. She carried her straight into her bedroom.
“Mmh… Sister…”
The moment she was set down, Xiaochu gripped Qi Ying’s shoulders tightly, burying her hot face in the crook of Qi Ying’s neck. Her breath was warm as she whispered, “Don’t ignore me…”
“I’m not ignoring you.” Qi Ying sat on the edge of the bed, letting Xiaochu cling to her. She pulled a quilt over the girl and patted her slender back, coaxing her softly. “I’m just going to get the thermometer. We should have fever medicine in the house. I’ll boil some water, too. You’re sick; you need to take medicine.”
“No medicine.” Xiaochu’s eyes were red, her eyelashes trembling as she nudged further into Qi Ying’s embrace.
It had been a long time since anyone had held her.
“Sister,” Xiaochu’s voice was raspy and soft. “Is there something I didn’t do well enough? That’s why you’ve been ignoring me lately… Can you tell me? I don’t want you to hate me…”
As she finished speaking, Qi Ying felt her shoulder get damp. Xiaochu was actually crying.
When Xiaochu cried, she was quiet; the tears just fell silently, one after another, looking heart-wrenchingly aggrieved. Qi Ying looked at her, not knowing how to comfort her, so she simply pulled her closer into a tight hug.
Perhaps due to the fever, the scent of osmanthus wasn’t as potent. Instead of feeling like she was on fire, Qi Ying only felt a faint sense of sadness.
It was a strange sensation; when Xiaochu cried, her pheromones felt “damp” too.
“There, there,” Qi Ying soothed her. “I never hated you. I’ve just been busy lately, so I haven’t been home as much.”
Xiaochu didn’t believe her. Her wet eyelashes fluttered as she wept against Qi Ying’s shoulder, sobbing, “You just don’t like me… you only take care of me because of my mother…”
Qi Ying patted her rhythmically. “Don’t overthink things. I really like you and want to take care of you, and not just because of your mother.”
Truth be told, Qi Ying didn’t even know the mother’s name or face—it was just an initial game setting. She hadn’t expected the child to remember it so vividly; she had almost forgotten it herself.
Xiaochu still seemed skeptical, but Qi Ying could feel her emotions stabilizing slightly.
Qi Ying recalled how, when children cried, mothers would often kiss their cheeks or ears. Naturally, she followed suit.
She first touched her lips to Xiaochu’s ear, then kissed her cheek. Xiaochu didn’t react at first, only feeling a tickle on her ear. But when Qi Ying kissed her cheek, Xiaochu’s eyes flew open, staring at her in utter shock.
Her watery eyes were misty, and her dark lashes were heavy with tears. Xiaochu’s pupils trembled; she didn’t understand why Qi Ying had just kissed her.
She… she…
Does she still want an osmanthus-scented Omega?
Xiaochu’s face flushed even deeper. Her nose prickled, and fresh tears began to fall. She didn’t want to become the third Omega after “Peach” and “Rose.”
“Wuu… Sister…” Xiaochu pushed Qi Ying away, determined to distance herself from this “Scumbag Alpha.” But Qi Ying assumed she was just shy and wanted to leave her embrace. She compliantly released her waist, tucked her into bed, and gave her a gentle, considerate smile. “Lie down for a bit. I’ll go get the thermometer.”
As Qi Ying left the room, Xiaochu watched her with a look of lingering alarm, clutching her pillow to her chest, feeling incredibly unsettled.
Soon, Qi Ying returned with the thermometer and medicine.
37.5°C—not high enough for a hospital visit. Qi Ying opened a bottle of oral fever-reducing liquid and watched Xiaochu drink it. The girl wrinkled her nose and made a face at the bitterness. Qi Ying smiled and handed her a glass of water.
Once the girl had gulped down the water, Qi Ying said sternly, “Don’t sleep on the sofa again, do you hear me?”
Holding the cup, Xiaochu stole a peek at Qi Ying before quickly looking away and nodding obediently.
What’s going on?
She was just secretly kissing me, and now she’s acting like a strict parent.
What is Sister trying to do?
Xiaochu’s heart was in a mess. She couldn’t understand Qi Ying at all; she couldn’t read this Alpha’s mind. Could it be… that this was how her “Sister” had lured in the Peach and Rose Omegas?
Xiaochu felt uneasy.
Qi Ying tidied up the cup and medicine and turned up the AC temperature. Seeing the medicine taking effect and Xiaochu looking drowsy, she said, “The pet shop appointment can’t be changed, so I’ll take Guazi for his vaccinations now. You get some sleep at home.”
Xiaochu huddled under the quilt and gave a muffled nod.
Seeing her looking so pitiable made Qi Ying’s heart soften. Sitting on the edge of the bed, she reached out to touch Xiaochu’s still-hot face, whispering softly, “Is there anything you want to eat? I’ll buy something on the way back.”
“Dumplings…” Xiaochu nuzzled into Qi Ying’s palm and said in a small voice, “I want the leek-and-egg and corn-and-shrimp dumplings from that shop.”
“Okay,” Qi Ying promised. “I’m heading out now. Get some rest.”
The pet hospital was right at the entrance of the residential complex. Qi Ying took the kitten, who was curled up in the carrier. The vet quickly held the kitten down and gave him his shot. The little guy, who was usually a terror at home, didn’t even dare to meow. His pink paw pads were damp with sweat—he was literally scared into a cold sweat.
Qi Ying teased him and fed him a cat treat.
After the vaccination, Qi Ying took the carrier to the nearby dumpling shop. she bought raw dumplings to cook at home and picked up half a roast duck as well, leisurely making her way back.
When she got home, Xiaochu was still asleep. Qi Ying let Guazi out of the carrier. Once back on his home turf, the kitten showed his true colors, circling Qi Ying’s feet and meowing as if complaining about the unfair treatment at the hospital. He eventually picked up a cloth fish and walked away, refusing to pay her any attention.
Qi Ying walked to the bed and checked Xiaochu’s temperature. Finding it had dropped, she finally felt at ease.
Xiaochu lay there, her steady breathing making her chest rise and fall slightly. Her cheeks still held a feverish glow, but her brow was no longer furrowed; she looked much more comfortable.
Qi Ying watched her for a long time before letting out a quiet sigh.
As night fell, the neon lights outside the floor-to-ceiling window began to glow. Qi Ying watched the cars racing across the nearby highway bridge. Suddenly, the scene felt inexplicably familiar, though she couldn’t remember where she had seen it before.
Before she could think further, she heard movement from the bedroom. Qi Ying walked in to find Xiaochu sitting up.
Xiaochu was startled by Qi Ying’s sudden appearance. She stared blankly for a moment before calling out, “Sister.”
Qi Ying walked over, brushed back the stray hairs from Xiaochu’s forehead, and pressed her warm palm against it. Xiaochu squinted slightly and looked up at her.
“The temperature is down.” Qi Ying rubbed Xiaochu’s cheek—it was soft and slightly warmer than her palm, like kneading a piece of osmanthus-scented steamed cake.
Xiaochu let her touch her face, saying shyly, “I caused you trouble, Sister…”
Qi Ying smiled and sat on the bed. Just as Xiaochu was wondering what she was up to, Qi Ying opened her arms and pulled her into a hug. Xiaochu froze, lost for words.
“Sister, you…” Xiaochu gripped the quilt nervously, her voice panicked as she protested softly, “Why are you suddenly hugging me?”
Qi Ying didn’t let go. Instead, she gently stroked Xiaochu’s back, as if comforting a restless child.
“Didn’t you say I was being distant lately?” Qi Ying said candidly. “Now that I’m hugging you, why are you unhappy about it?”
Xiaochu’s face flushed instantly. She explained nervously, “I’m not unhappy, I just…”
Qi Ying noticed the tips of her ears were bright red. With a hint of mischief in her voice, she teased, “Just what? Don’t tell me you hate it?”
Xiaochu shook her head. “No.”
“Not hate, and not unhappy, then why won’t you let me hug you?” Qi Ying acted a bit stubbornly, pulling her even tighter.
Xiaochu’s eyelashes trembled, and she stole a glance at her.
“Oh, right.” Qi Ying released her and stood up. “You slept all day today. While you were sleeping, I made a new outfit for you. Let me show you.”
Clothes?
Xiaochu watched curiously as Qi Ying ran out and returned with something in her hands. With a flick of her wrists, a beautiful, milky-yellow long dress appeared before Xiaochu.
The color was soft and creamy. The hem was elegantly designed, and the neckline featured several brown buttons that looked like milk candies. The small collar was neat and pretty.
Xiaochu looked at the dress in shock. It was hard to believe Qi Ying had made this herself rather than buying it.
“I planned to take you to the mall today, but since you were sick, I had to make one for you instead. I happened to see a few bolts of fabric in the storage room,” Qi Ying said, her eyes gentle. “Would you like to have dinner and then try it on?”
Xiaochu looked at the soft dress, blinked, and asked softly, “Then… what about the leftover scraps?”
Qi Ying said, “I used them to make cloth fish for Guazi.”
Xiaochu: “…” (Pinching the corner of the quilt).
She looked up at Qi Ying and asked, “Can… can I have a cloth fish too?”
