My Sweet Little Flower Turned Out to Be a Sinister Ghost - Chapter 9
Song Yuehua had always been someone who went with the flow, but the thought of the impending midterm exams made her obediently take a seat at her desk.
On the first day of school, when Song Yuehua walked into the classroom just as the bell rang, it didn’t cause the slightest stir.
Relationships among university classmates were naturally distant, with everyone busy with their own lives, so it was common for people to hire substitutes to attend classes.
She chose a seat by the window in the back row, where sunlight streamed through the glass and fell warmly onto her textbook.
In the entire class, the only person she vaguely recognized was Guo Feifei, who had initiated a conversation with her the day before.
It seemed Guo Feifei had been sincere when she said she was just short of a group member, as she was now chatting animatedly with the person next to her.
But this suited Song Yuehua just fine.
Both classes were specialized courses, and the professor explained everything in great detail. Even someone like Song Yuehua, a complete novice, could mostly keep up, though she still struggled with the difficult parts.
Song Yuehua jotted down the concepts she didn’t understand, planning to figure them out on her own after class.
By the end of the two long classes, Song Yuehua stared silently at the full page of notes she had taken.
It was only natural, she hadn’t studied in a long time.
She comforted herself inwardly.
As soon as the class ended, students flooded out the door. Some rushed to the cafeteria with their books, while others headed back to their dormitories, scrolling through their phones.
Not wanting to be in the way, Song Yuehua deliberately stepped aside into a corner, carrying her brown shoulder bag stuffed with her course materials and Bai Qingyu’s jacket.
Standing at the south entrance of the Third Teaching Building, she took out her phone and sent a message to Bai Qingyu: [Where are you? I’m waiting for you at the south entrance of the Third Teaching Building~]
[Bai Qingyu: Be right there.]
Song Yuehua put her phone away and watched the bustling crowd of students. Feeling a bit silly just standing there, she pulled out the notebook she had used in class.
She tried hard to recall the professor’s explanations, hoping to grasp some of the concepts, but it was no use, some of the material was completely new to her, and she couldn’t catch up on her own in such a short time.
Although her short-term goal was to pass the midterms, Song Yuehua knew she had zero interest in computer science and would eventually need to change her major.
But to transfer majors, she had to rank among the top students in her department.
As she mulled it over, a wave of despair washed over her.
Who came up with this rule?!
If I could rank among the top students, why would I even need to change majors?!
Song Yuehua’s expression twisted in frustration.
“Yuehua?” A soft voice, like a feather brushing past her ear, made Song Yuehua freeze. She hurriedly smoothed out her frustrated expression.
When she looked up, Bai Qingyu was already standing beside her.
“Senior,” Song Yuehua straightened up abruptly, hastily gathering her notebook to her chest. She cleared her throat lightly, trying to cover up her earlier “loss of composure,” but the tips of her ears turned red first.
“What are you looking at?” Bai Qingyu’s gaze fell on the crumpled notebook in her hands.
“Ah… just some parts I didn’t understand in class,” Song Yuehua scratched her head.
“Mind if I take a look?” Bai Qingyu asked.
“Of course not,” Song Yuehua handed the notebook to Bai Qingyu.
Bai Qingyu lowered her head to flip through it, her eyelashes casting faint shadows under her eyes.
Song Yuehua’s heart raced: She had scribbled hastily in class, her handwriting must be a mess…
Before she could finish overthinking, Bai Qingyu looked up and pointed to a formula circled in red. “This isn’t actually that difficult. Look, it goes like this…”
She spoke at a measured pace, her fingertips lightly tracing the pages. She often glanced at Song Yuehua’s reactions, pausing whenever Song frowned to rephrase her explanation in simpler terms, her eyes always carrying a hint of a smile.
“Oh~” Song Yuehua’s face lit up with sudden understanding.
Bai Qingyu’s lips curved into a gentler smile as she looked at Song’s brightened eyes. “Are you hungry?”
“Not really…” Song Yuehua had barely finished speaking when her stomach let out a loud gurgle.
She had stayed up late reading until the early hours and nearly overslept that morning, rushing to class in such a hurry that she hadn’t even managed to grab breakfast or a sip of water.
With two consecutive classes all morning, she was now starving, her stomach practically sticking to her back.
“Pfft.” Bai Qingyu couldn’t hold back a laugh, the corners of her eyes crinkling with amusement like scattered light.
Song Yuehua’s ears flushed bright red instantly, and she wished she could vanish into the ground. Her fingers unconsciously fiddled with the strap of her backpack as she muttered under her breath, “It made that noise on its own…”
“Let’s go.” Bai Qingyu’s lips curved into a faint smile as she naturally wrapped an arm around Song Yuehua’s shoulder and guided her toward the cafeteria.
The cafeteria was packed. By the time they arrived, every serving window had a long line.
They picked a slightly shorter queue and joined it. As Song Yuehua shuffled forward, she could clearly catch the faint scent of Bai Qingyu’s perfume from behind.
She pursed her lips, about to turn around and strike up a conversation, when Bai Qingyu’s phone buzzed loudly from inside her canvas bag.
Bai Qingyu glanced at the caller ID, her fingers pausing briefly on the side of the bag. She looked up and gave Song Yuehua an apologetic smile. “I need to take this call.”
Song Yuehua waved her hand, indicating it was fine, and urged Bai Qingyu to answer.
Once Bai Qingyu picked up, the person on the other end seemed to be explaining something. Bai Qingyu listened intently, nodding from time to time.
“Okay, okay, I don’t have a problem with that,” Bai Qingyu said with a nod.
When she hung up, Song Yuehua noticed a faint trace of worry between her brows and couldn’t help leaning closer. “What’s wrong? Did something happen?”
“Nothing serious,” Bai Qingyu replied. “It was the parent of the student I tutor. They said their child wants to review the material on their own for now, so I won’t be needed for a while.”
Song Yuehua asked, “Are you going to look for another tutoring job?”
“Most likely,” Bai Qingyu said with a troubled expression. “But it might be hard to find one right now.”
Song Yuehua, reminded of her own plan to change majors, brightened up. She took half a step forward, pointed at herself, and looked up eagerly. “What do you think of me, Senior?”
“You?” Bai Qingyu blinked, her light brown eyes filled with confusion. “What about you?”
“Tutor me!” Song Yuehua’s eyes curved into crescents, her voice brimming with excitement. “You explained things so clearly just now, and I have a bunch of concepts I don’t understand! It’s perfect, you could teach me.”
Bai Qingyu was taken aback for a moment, then chuckled softly and patted her arm. “That wouldn’t do. You’re just asking me a few questions, it’s not proper tutoring, and I certainly can’t take your money.”
Song Yuehua bit her lip. “I’m not just saying this! I’m planning to switch majors, and I need to rank in the top few of the department to qualify. But right now, I can’t even keep up with the lectures…”
She tugged gently at Bai Qingyu’s sleeve, her tone softening with a hint of pleading. “Senior, look… my foundation is so weak. If you manage to tutor me into the top ranks, it’ll be way more effort than teaching those other students. Wouldn’t it be fair to charge a little for your hard work?”
Bai Qingyu lowered her gaze, clearly hesitating.
Seeing her resistance waver, Song Yuehua quickly pressed her advantage, leaning in even closer until she was almost whispering in her ear. Tilting her head and looking up, her eyelashes fluttering, she pleaded, “How about it, senior?” Besides, if you come to tutor me, you can also see Song Xiaomi.”
Bai Qingyu’s ears tinged slightly pink at her soft, coaxing demeanor. Finally, she let out a soft sigh and lifted her gaze, her eyes shimmering with a mix of helplessness and tender amusement. “I’ll think about it.”
“Okay!” Song Yuehua immediately beamed.
Thinking about it meant there was hope!
“By the way, this is for you.” Song Yuehua straightened up and pulled a neatly folded piece of clothing from the side pocket of her backpack, handing it over. “My memory’s always so spotty, I forgot to return it last time. Glad I didn’t forget this time.”
“It’s fine.” Bai Qingyu took the clothes and placed them in her canvas bag.
The food in the school cafeteria wasn’t particularly delicious, but it was affordable. However, after starving all morning, even the scrambled eggs with tomatoes tasted exceptionally good to Song Yuehua. Her cheeks puffed out like a little hamster storing food.
Bai Qingyu watched her like this, her chopsticks pausing mid-air. A faint trace of curiosity crept into her eyes as her gaze settled on Song Yuehua’s fluffy hair, unblinking. The usual smile at the corners of her lips faded slightly, as if she were lost in thought.
After finishing half a bowl of rice, Song Yuehua finally felt the emptiness in her stomach begin to subside. Only then did she belatedly notice the gaze from across the table. She froze mid-action and slowly looked up.
Bai Qingyu quickly lowered her lashes, but when she raised them again, her eyes were already filled with a smile.
Song Yuehua’s cheeks flushed under her gaze, and she hurriedly lowered her head to continue eating, though her ears had already turned bright red.
After saying goodbye at the cafeteria entrance, the two went their separate ways.
Song Yuehua had no classes in the afternoon, so she ambled back to her apartment. As soon as she opened the door, she saw Song Xiaomi curled up on the living room rug, dozing. His belly rose and fell with each breath, and the tip of his tail occasionally twitched gently, the picture of contentment.
Song Yuehua felt like napping too, but the thought of having to study a subject she disliked for four years if she couldn’t change her major spurred her into action.
She had only managed to slog through two pages of notes when her phone suddenly chimed.
Song Yuehua’s eyes lit up, thinking it was a message from Bai Qingyu. Her fingers flew across the screen to unlock it, only to find a chat window from Song Yuelan popping up.
[Song Yuelan: Has Bai Qingyu contacted you?]
[Song Yuelan: When can we invite her out for a meal again?]
Song Yuehua felt a wave of helplessness.
Had this person forgotten about abandoning her on the side of the road yesterday? How could she still have the nerve to rush her like this?
With a personality like this, Song Yuehua began to wonder what exactly Bai Qingyu had seen in Song Yuelan in the original story.
She brooded for a little while.
Maybe there were virtues she hadn’t noticed. After all, the two were the official couple.
Her original intention had only been to help Bai Qingyu suffer less and assist the two in getting together.
Thinking this, she typed a reply, explaining that Bai Qingyu had quit her tutoring job and that she wanted to ask her for guidance. She even added specially: [But the senior hasn’t agreed yet!]
[Song Yuelan: Okay.]
[Song Yuelan: Where are you living now? I’ll drop by when I have time.]
Song Yuehua: “…”
Bai Qingyu hasn’t agreed yet, hello!
“Ding ding.”
Just then, her phone chimed twice more. A notification from Bai Qingyu popped up at the top of the screen, and Song Yuehua’s eyes instantly sparkled.
