My Sweet Little Flower Turned Out to Be a Sinister Ghost - Chapter 40
“Ahhh!” Guo Feifei…
“Ahhh!” Guo Feifei clutched her phone and hopped in place twice. “I actually shook hands with Senior Bai! I saw your photo on the school bulletin board back in high school!”
Song Yuehua blinked, looking at her in confusion. Why was she suddenly so excited? She poked Guo Feifei’s arm and whispered, “Are you two… close?”
“Not close! I absolutely idolize her!” Guo Feifei grabbed Song Yuehua’s wrist and shook it vigorously. “I was Senior Bai’s junior in high school! It was because she chose the Computer Science department that I followed suit and applied for the same major. But after half a year, I realized I just wasn’t cut out for it, so I switched majors…”
Her voice gradually trailed off toward the end, and she scratched her head sheepishly. “If I’d known earlier that your friend was Senior Bai, I would’ve asked more questions yesterday!”
Bai Qingyu, staying in character, comforted her, “Switching majors isn’t a bad thing at all. Computer Science isn’t the only path, nor is it the measure of success. Being able to realize early on that it wasn’t the right fit for you and then choosing what you truly want to study, that already puts you ahead of many who are still lost.”
“Really?” Guo Feifei said. “I thought switching majors was embarrassing, but hearing you say that makes me feel so much better!” She stared at Bai Qingyu, feeling more and more endeared to her.
Even back in high school, she had thought this senior was both impressive and gentle. Now, getting to interact with her up close, she was even better than imagined.
A sudden doubt crept into her mind: If Song Yuehua liked someone like this, then her analysis from yesterday might not have been so far off after all…
Song Yuehua tugged at Guo Feifei’s sleeve and said, “Class is about to start. Let’s go.”
Guo Feifei quickly pulled out her phone to check the time and gasped, “Oh no! Only five minutes left!”
“Let’s have lunch together at noon,” Bai Qingyu suggested.
Guo Feifei clapped her hands excitedly. “Yes, yes, yes!”
Song Yuehua glanced at Guo Feifei on her left, then at Bai Qingyu on her right, and couldn’t shake the feeling that she had made a terrible mistake.
After saying goodbye to Bai Qingyu, the two of them hurried toward the lecture hall.
As they ran, Song Yuehua couldn’t help but slow her pace slightly and sneak a glance back.
Bai Qingyu was still standing by the roadside. Her light-gray coat stood out among the bustling students. Occasionally, students in a rush would pass by her, causing her figure to flicker in and out of sight. Yet she didn’t drive away immediately, almost as if she was still watching their direction.
She had only looked back for a couple of seconds when Guo Feifei tugged hard on her wrist. “Stop looking back! Any later and the professor will mark us late!”
The two rushed into the classroom just as the projector cast a blurry course interface onto the blackboard. The teacher was bent over, adjusting the computer.
No sooner had Guo Feifei settled into her seat than she couldn’t resist leaning over. She nudged Song Yuehua’s arm gently, her voice hushed but brimming with excitement, “Hey, how exactly did you get to know Senior Bai?”
Song Yuehua propped her head on her hand, looking at Guo Feifei, Bai Qingyu’s devoted fan, and replied with a mix of helplessness and amusement, “Isn’t she our substitute class monitor?”
“Ah?!” Guo Feifei’s voice instantly rose a pitch before she quickly covered her mouth, lowering her volume. Her face was full of regret. “I was three weeks late to school because of family matters and actually missed the chance to have Senior as our class representative! What a loss!”
She wallowed in self-pity for two seconds before suddenly brightening up, consoling herself: “But it’s fine! Today I got to shake Senior’s hand and even made plans to have lunch together. This must be fate working in mysterious ways!”
Song Yuehua had originally intended to comfort her, but seeing how quickly she bounced back, she swallowed the words that were already on the tip of her tongue.
Before Song Yuehua could speak, Guo Feifei suddenly leaned closer, her expression turning serious and her voice dropping lower. “Seriously though, I might have overthought things yesterday. You were right, Senior Bai probably just thought that bracelet suited you perfectly, happened to see it and bought it. Nothing more to it.”
Hearing her speculation being validated, Song Yuehua felt a wave of disappointment wash over her.
“But!” Guo Feifei reached out and patted the back of her hand. “I think Senior definitely treats you differently! Think about it, Senior Bai might seem gentle, but she actually keeps some distance from people. Yet she’s willing to share an apartment with you! You’re already miles ahead of everyone else!”
Song Yuehua chuckled quietly and asked, “Really?”
Guo Feifei nodded earnestly.
Song Yuehua leaned in closer, a hint of smugness in her voice. “Actually… I’ve already started pursuing her!”
“Oh?!” Guo Feifei immediately leaned forward, lowering her voice to ask, “What have you done?”
Song Yuehua told her about what happened last night.
As she listened, Guo Feifei’s brows slightly furrowed. Why did she feel something was off?
After finishing her story, Song Yuehua looked at her expectantly.
Guo Feifei hemmed and hawed.
Song Yuehua narrowed her eyes, studying her expression, sensing something amiss.
“Honestly, how many relationships have you been in?”
Guo Feifei guiltily turned her head away, avoiding eye contact.
Song Yuehua shifted her position to follow her.
Cornered, Guo Feifei had no choice but to raise her hand sheepishly, wiggling her fingers slightly.
“One?” Song Yuehua blinked and tentatively asked. Guo Feifei bent her extended index finger to meet her thumb, forming a small zero, her voice as faint as a mosquito’s hum: “..None.”
“You’ve never been in a relationship?!” Song Yuehua’s eyes widened, whispering in a breathy voice, “Then how come you analyzed everything so confidently yesterday?”
Guo Feifei opened her innocent big eyes wide, quickly waving her hands in defense. “But! Just because I haven’t been in a relationship doesn’t mean I don’t understand these things!”
Song Yuehua still held some hope for her subsequent response.
Guo Feifei: “I’ve had crushes on many people, witnessed plenty of my friends’ relationships, and I’ve been reading novels on Jinjiang for years.”
Song Yuehua: “…”
She really was desperate for any help she could get.
Guo Feifei tried hard to secure her chance to offer advice, saying, “Look, you don’t want too many people to know you like Senior, so I’m the only one who can help you come up with ideas! Even if we’re just making do, together we can be half as clever as Zhuge Liang!” As she spoke, she brought her two index fingers together and shook them, meaning “with our combined efforts, we can definitely do it.”
Song Yuehua nodded with difficulty.
She had a feeling this wouldn’t go smoothly.
“Students, put away your phones and stop talking now. Let’s get ready for class.” The teacher’s voice came from the podium, accompanied by the sound of knocking on the blackboard.
Guo Feifei quickly stuffed her phone into her desk and gave Song Yuehua a “trust me” look.
Song Yuehua had no choice but to agree.
After class, Guo Feifei was as restless as if she had ADHD.
“What do I do, what do I do? I’m already starting to get nervous!” She clutched her chest, her eyes wide, and leaned in to whisper in Song Yuehua’s ear, “What if I can’t speak when we meet Senior later? What if I say something wrong and ruin your chances with her?”
Song Yuehua said, “If you get this nervous just meeting Qingqing, how are you going to help me come up with ideas? Where’s all that theoretical confidence from earlier?”
Hearing this, Guo Feifei immediately straightened her back and smoothed her hair. “No, I was just pretending.”
Song Yuehua: “…”
“At least try to look a little more reliable, okay?” Song Yuehua stated her minimum requirement.
“Okay.” Guo Feifei gave her an “okay” hand gesture.
As the two walked toward the cafeteria, Guo Feifei couldn’t help but mutter, “Weren’t you nervous at all the first time you had a meal alone with Senior? Just thinking about sitting with her later makes me feel like my tongue is going to tie itself in knots. I’ve been like this since I was a kid, whenever I see someone who’s both beautiful and impressive, I can’t help but stutter.”
“I was very nervous,” Song Yuehua said. “But not like you. My heart was just beating a little faster. It got better after we spent more time together.”
“That’s good, that’s good.” Guo Feifei breathed a sigh of relief, then leaned in curiously again. “By the way, I heard from others that Senior started a software company. She must be super busy, right? Since you’re roommates, do you get to chat much?”
Song Yuehua paused for a moment, realizing she hadn’t mentioned this. “Ah, I forgot to tell you! I’m Qingqing’s secretary now. I go to her company to help organize documents when I don’t have classes.”
“Qingqing?” Guo Feifei abruptly stopped walking, her eyes widening. She hadn’t noticed the term of address earlier.
“Qingqing said I could call her that.” Song Yuehua lifted her chin slightly.
Guo Feifei’s jaw dropped so wide it could have fit an egg. “Oh my god! Now I’m starting to think yesterday’s guess was right again! Senior must be interested in you. Otherwise, why would she let you call her that and even hire you as her secretary?”
Song Yuehua gave her a resentful look.
Guo Feifei quickly covered her mouth and nodded repeatedly. “Okay, okay, I won’t speculate blindly. I’ll observe carefully during the meal later, I’m sure I’ll figure something out!”
When the three of them met at the cafeteria entrance, Song Yuehua and Guo Feifei were two steps late.
The cafeteria was already packed, with lines stretching from the serving windows to the door. The noisy chatter mixed with the aroma of food wafted out, making it difficult to even find an empty seat.
Bai Qingyu glanced at the crowd inside, then turned to Song Yuehua. “It’s too crowded in there. How about I take you out to eat? You can choose whatever you’d like.”
Song Yuehua nodded.
Guo Feifei also wanted to eat outside.
“What would you like to eat?” Bai Qingyu asked.
“I’m fine with anything! Senior can choose!” Guo Feifei said.
“I’d like to go for barbecue,” Song Yuehua suggested.
“Sure.” Bai Qingyu immediately nodded. “I know a place not far from campus. The meat is very fresh. Let’s go there.”
It was the peak time after classes ended, and the campus was bustling with people coming and going. Bicycles slowly passed by the car. Bai Qingyu drove very slowly, taking about ten minutes just to exit the school gate.
Upon entering the barbecue restaurant, the rich aroma of cumin and sizzling meat immediately filled the air. Waitstaff in orange aprons bustled between tables, all of which were occupied except for one four-seater tucked away in the corner.
After settling in, Bai Qingyu took the menu from the server. Her finger paused briefly over the “mini sausages” section before she looked up at Song Yuehua with a smile. “Shall we get two orders of these? You mentioned wanting to try them last time, I remembered.”
Song Yuehua’s face lit up with delight. “Perfect! I can’t believe this random place we picked actually has them.”
