My Sweet And Submissive Bunny Won't Stop Being Clingy - Chapter 20
The group finished buying fresh meat and vegetables, loading Wan Xianyu’s car with charcoal, a grill, and even an electric soup pot.
They found a nice spot by the river to set up. Wen Shuyao put out the small stools while Meng Hemian squatted by the riverbank to start the fire. Wan Xianyu stayed by her side, washing vegetables and skewering the meat.
Meng Hemian lit a piece of paper, building a pagoda of charcoal around the small flickering flame.
Wan Xianyu sliced a bowl of silken tofu and proceeded to dump a massive amount of millet chili and minced garlic on top.
Catching a glimpse, Meng Hemian remarked, “Too much garlic. It won’t taste good.”
Wan Xianyu gave a contemptuous smirk, shooting back effortlessly, “Why? Are you planning on ‘snuggling’ with someone later?”
After speaking, she added another spoonful of garlic for good measure.
Meng Hemian: “…”
She fanned the charcoal with a piece of cardboard. Seeing that it was ready, she simply stood up to go help Wen Shuyao.
Wan Xianyu called out, “Hey, I haven’t finished skewering the vegetables over here. Why aren’t you helping me?”
Meng Hemian passed her by. “No time. I’m going to go snuggle with Wen Shuyao.”
She said it without blushing or a skip in her heart rate, her tone didn’t change in the slightest. However, Wan Xianyu was profoundly shocked, physically recoiling in a tactical lean.
“Eww! How can you say ‘baby talk’ words like that with a straight face?!”
“Wait, that’s not right,” she realized. “Since when do you make jokes like that!”
“Wen Shu….mph!”
Just as she was about to shout and expose Meng Hemian, her mouth was stuffed with a small steamed bun by the latter.
Ignoring her, Meng Hemian walked to the car to help Wen Shuyao unload the remaining gear.
Wen Shuyao said hurriedly, “No need, I can do it.”
As she spoke, she lifted the grill with one hand. The movement was fluid, without a single pause, and she even walked forward a few steps with ease.
Despite Wen Shuyao’s startling arm strength, Meng Hemian still felt it wasn’t right after all, Wen Shuyao was currently in her “special period.”
“Let me do it.” Meng Hemian took it with both hands and then walked very quickly.
She had to walk fast, if she slowed down, she wouldn’t be able to hold it.
Wen Shuyao chased after her carrying the small stools. Once they reached the spot, she heard Meng Hemian let out a long sigh of relief.
She couldn’t help but purse her lips to hide a secret smile.
“What are you laughing at?” Meng Hemian looked directly at her.
Wen Shuyao waved her hands quickly. “Nothing. Thank you.”
She felt that the human in her home was incredibly cute, making her want to cook lots of delicious food to feed her.
With many hands making light work, it wasn’t long before the grill was set up and the bone broth was simmering in the pot, bubbling away.
Sizzling pork belly crackled on the grill, and eggplant topped with millet chili and garlic gave off a rich, mouth-watering aroma.
As today’s head chef, Wen Shuyao wore a small apron, flipping the meat while sprinkling cumin.
It had to be said that Wan Xianyu had picked a great time, the weather today was perfect.
The river surged with rolling waves, the wind bringing the damp scent of the water, while distant green mountains met the jade-colored sky under layers of drifting clouds.
Meng Hemian sat on a lounge chair, basking in the sun.
She wasn’t exactly resting peacefully. She kept wanting to check on what Wen Shuyao was doing, fearing she might have a stomach ache again or burn her hand while grilling.
Wan Xianyu, on the other hand, rested with a clear conscience, claiming her skills were so poor that helping would only waste ingredients.
She spoke airily, “Your eyeballs are about to fall out.”
Meng Hemian didn’t bother bickering with her and continued to watch with her head propped on her hand.
She watched Wen Shuyao sneak a skewer of grilled pork belly, huffing from the heat, preferring to fan her mouth with her hand rather than spit it out.
She watched her fish out carrots from the soup pot, distributing them equally to everyone, then pausing with her chopsticks to secretly pick out her own and drop them into Meng Hemian’s bowl.
Wan Xianyu continued gloomily, “Ever since you met Xiao Yao, Miss, the smiles on your face have increased. I am truly gratified.”
Meng Hemian stabbed her with a cold gaze, telling her to shut up.
However, Wan Xianyu had no intention of giving up.
She said with total sincerity, “I’m not lying, you really were smiling just now.”
Meng Hemian instinctively pursed her lips, pulling down the corners of her mouth.
Wan Xianyu grinned, revealing her sharp little tiger teeth.
She said in a relaxed tone, “Alright, jokes aside, what do you think of your life now?”
“Are you trying to persuade me to stay again?” Meng Hemian’s expression turned cold. “You know very well that I and that person…”
Not far from them, Wen Shuyao quietly pricked up her small ears.
Most monsters have very sharp hearing. Even the weak Wen Shuyao had hearing that far surpassed Meng Hemian’s.
Especially after hearing the faint sounds of an argument, Wen Shuyao’s heart leaned into the conversation, unwilling to miss a single word.
If Meng Hemian left and only took the little rabbit, Wen Shuyao wouldn’t have to worry about her “identity” being exposed.
She just felt it was a bit of a pity after all, she wouldn’t be able to eat delicious food or stay by Meng Hemian’s side in human form anymore.
She heard Wan Xianyu interrupt: “I know, of course, but I’m more worried about your health. Do you really like Yaocheng?”
“You came back to Jianglou, so you must be tired of that boring, repetitive life, right?”
Silence.
Wan Xianyu waited for a long time but received no answer. Meng Hemian didn’t say a word, her eyelashes drooping, making it impossible to see the emotions in her eyes.
Wan Xianyu gave a soft sigh.
Just as she was about to offer more advice, Wen Shuyao’s voice suddenly rang out from nearby.
“The pork belly is ready!”
Wan Xianyu instantly adjusted her expression and jumped up. “Hooray!”
The pork belly skewers were grilled to a char; the fatty parts weren’t greasy, and even the lean parts burst with juice upon the first bite.
The ratio of chili to cumin was perfect, neither overpowering the other nor masking the aroma of the meat.
The two of them were given two skewers each by Wen Shuyao. Wan Xianyu was not stingy with her praise.
“For Xiao Yao to grill like this on her first try, if you ever open a BBQ shop, I’ll definitely be your best customer.”
Meng Hemian also nodded in agreement.
The topic was tactfully shifted to Wen Shuyao’s culinary skills.
Neither of them mentioned the previous subject again.
By the time they finished their noisy meal, it was evening, and the sky was filled with red clouds.
The river surface reflected the shimmering light as the sun slowly sank below the horizon.
Meng Hemian was feeling sleepy now.
Wan Xianyu, who had lost at rock-paper-scissors, was left to pack up the things outside. Meng Hemian sat on a rock by the river, attempting to empty her mind.
In truth, she couldn’t. All sorts of messy thoughts kept flashing by, making it hard to catch her train of thought.
She pressed her temples, dealing with a headache, not even noticing when someone sat down beside her.
“Meng Hemian, would you like some snacks?”
It was a very, very soft voice, like a feather brushing against her heart.
Meng Hemian turned her head, silently looking at Wen Shuyao and the Poria Osmanthus cake in her hand.
Seemingly embarrassed by the staring, Wen Shuyao smiled shyly. “I’ll change it to something else for you tomorrow.”
Meng Hemian took the cake and ate it slowly.
She asked casually, “Any discomfort today?”
Wen Shuyao shook her head obediently.
After a while, she asked cautiously, “I suppose… no one can influence your decisions, right?”
Meng Hemian froze for a moment, frowning slightly. “You heard that just now?”
“Mhm,” Wen Shuyao gave an apologetic smile. She said, “Whatever you choose is fine, I just hope you can be happy every day.”
The river breeze blew, messy hairs fluttering.
Meng Hemian’s heart calmed down, she thought of nothing else.
She could even hear her own heartbeat….thump, thump…at a rhythm slightly faster than usual.
She suddenly spoke: “I don’t plan on going back for now. I’ll probably stay in Jianglou and open a shop.”
Wen Shuyao nodded. “Of course, that works.”
As long as she could be with Meng Hemian, she could accept any situation.
Meng Hemian looked out at the distant river and also nodded. “Then when should we bring ‘Little Bread’ home?”
She was a bit worried the little rabbit wasn’t eating or sleeping well at the shop, but she also had her own selfish reasons.
After all, she hadn’t petted the rabbit in a long time.
Wen Shuyao: “…”
After another moment, she opened her lips with great difficulty: “Meng Hemian, do you believe there are unscientific species in this world?”
“No.”
Meng Hemian’s answer was decisive.
Her faith in materialism was as hard and brilliant as a diamond.
Wen Shuyao’s breathing suddenly quickened. Her hands gripped the hem of her clothes, and she turned her head away, not daring to look at her.
“Actually, actually…”
Before she could finish, someone’s phone suddenly began to chime loudly.
