- My Straight Childhood Friend Successfully Pursued Me After The Breakup
- Chapter 8 - Are you two close?
The last class of the day was Physical Education. The teacher had the students run two laps and then let them have free time, which made it easier for Xue Shuangxi to “shadow” Zuo Xian openly and honestly.
The sun was strong. Zuo Xian sat on the steps by the sports field, enjoying the cool breeze that blew in the shade of the trees.
The breeze carried Xue Shuangxi’s incessant chatter right into Zuo Xian’s ears.
Xue Shuangxi had been pestering Zuo Xian for the entire day.
Zuo Xian narrowed her eyes, her patience finally snapping. She grabbed Xue Shuangxi’s cheeks, pinching her plump face into a pout.
“Can you be quiet for once?”
Xue Shuangxi blinked, muttering indistinctly, “I just wanted to help you.”
“And the reason?” Zuo Xian squeezed her cheeks a little harder. Xue Shuangxi was already youthful-looking, and now, with her eyes widened, she looked like a primary school student.
“I… I just want to be friends with you,” Xue Shuangxi pulled Zuo Xian’s hands away. A faint red mark was left on her cheek, and she smiled sheepishly.
“No other selfish motives?”
“Mmm… just a tiny bit,” Xue Shuangxi put her thumb and forefinger together, trying her best to show the smallest gap possible.
Zuo Xian looked as if she had expected this. “What is it?”
“I want to meet Tao Ran,” Xue Shuangxi chuckled. “My family always says that the friends I make are bad influences. I must get to know the top scorer of the high school entrance exam so they can’t look down on me anymore!”
Zuo Xian was speechless.
What kind of nonsense logic is that?
As if afraid Zuo Xian might have a problem with her request, Xue Shuangxi raised three fingers to swear. “But trust me! I’m sincere about you too. I really admire you!”
Xue Shuangxi’s face clearly read, “You are all my little wings; losing any of you will prevent me from flying,” showing off her open and blatant fickleness.
“Don’t even start,” Zuo Xian wasn’t buying it. “I think you just want to get close to Tao Ran through me.”
“Oh, are you jealous?” Xue Shuangxi swayed her head playfully. “Are you jealous of me, or of Tao Ran?”
“Xue Shuangxi, you’re asking for a beating!”
When she could no longer stand it, there was no need to hold back. Zuo Xian grabbed Xue Shuangxi’s fleshy cheeks and twisted them, causing Xue Shuangxi to instantly cry out in pain.
After they had been fooling around for a while, the dismissal bell rang. Zuo Xian quickly put on her backpack and started walking. Xue Shuangxi rubbed her cheeks and caught up with her in two steps.
As they reached the school gate, Xue Shuangxi asked, “Which way is your house? Let’s walk together.”
“I’m taking a car,” Zuo Xian tilted her chin, pointing to the sedan across the street. “I have to wait for Tao Ran to finish school so we can go home together.”
“Oh, going back to the same home? Will you be sleeping in the same bedroom tonight?”
“…Xue Shuangxi.”
“Don’t misunderstand,” Xue Shuangxi instantly became serious, the red marks still on her face. “I meant a bunk bed.”
“Say that again,” Zuo Xian glared at her.
Zuo Xian’s features were striking, giving her an aggressive appearance, and when she seriously put on a stern face, she was quite intimidating. Xue Shuangxi immediately shut up, but after enduring it for a moment, she couldn’t help herself.
“I think the two of you are really a good match.”
Zuo Xian grit her teeth. “Xue—”
“What’s a good match?” A familiar voice came from behind. Zuo Xian instantly turned around to look at the approaching Tao Ran.
“Nothing, she… she’s talking nonsense!” Zuo Xian hooked her arm around Xue Shuangxi’s neck, looked down at her, her eyes full of threats.
“Right, A Xue?”
The arm clamping her neck prevented Xue Shuangxi from speaking freely. She hunched her neck and quickly tried to explain to her “dream best friend.”
“Y-yes, I said Zuo Xian is… Ugh!”
Her neck was suddenly squeezed, and Xue Shuangxi hurriedly patted Zuo Xian’s arm, rushing to finish her sentence. “She goes well with… pink, pink, I said pink!”
Zuo Xian let go of Xue Shuangxi and nodded in satisfaction. “Good taste.”
Xue Shuangxi nervously touched her neck, thankful that she hadn’t been executed on the spot by Zuo Xian.
A Xue.
When the two of them weren’t paying attention, Tao Ran caught the nickname. His smile faded slightly, and his slightly cold gaze swept over Xue Shuangxi.
His tone was emotionless. “Is this A-Xian’s new friend?”
Zuo Xian nodded. “Uh… yes.”
“Why are you so reluctant about it?” Xue Shuangxi gave Zuo Xian a dissatisfied glance, then smiled brightly at Tao Ran.
“My name is Xue Shuangxi, Zuo Xian’s classmate. Nice to meet you.”
“Tao Ran.”
“I know,” Xue Shuangxi raised an eyebrow. “Zuo Xian’s childhood friend. She told me all about it.”
She looked shy. “Zuo Xian’s friend is my friend. Should we exchange contact information, hehe?”
Xue Shuangxi’s true motive surfaced. Zuo Xian clenched her back teeth, not noticing the flash of vague darkness in Tao Ran’s eyes.
But that small moment of unease vanished quickly, and Tao Ran returned to his usual gentle demeanor, smiling faintly. “Sure, but I didn’t bring my phone.”
“No worries, Zuo Xian can push your contact info to me later.”
Xue Shuangxi winked at Zuo Xian. “Don’t forget! Don’t worry, I won’t say an extra word once you add me.”
To Zuo Xian, Xue Shuangxi’s statement was repeatedly tempting fate on the edge of danger. She secretly grits her teeth, deciding that she could never let Xue Shuangxi and Tao Ran meet alone in the future.
Xue Shuangxi’s mouth was too much of a risk.
She quickly urged, “Xue Shuangxi, didn’t you say your family told you to go home early? Hurry up and leave, don’t let your mother wait too long.”
As she spoke, she pushed Xue Shuangxi’s shoulder to get her a bit further away, then waved. “See you tomorrow.”
Seeing the person finally gone, Zuo Xian let out a sigh of relief and turned to look at Tao Ran.
Tao Ran’s lips curved slightly. “She’s quite lively.”
Zuo Xian waved her hand dismissively. “Don’t even mention it. That girl is a total wild card. Let’s go, let’s go.”
As the two got into the car, Tao Ran glanced at Zuo Xian, who was looking out the window without speaking.
“That Xue Shuangxi, I haven’t heard you mention her before.”
Zuo Xian propped her chin up and said casually, “Because I just met her these last couple of days.”
“Are you two closes?”
“We’re alright, I guess.” Zuo Xian frowned, feeling a headache thinking about Xue Shuangxi. “She’s too erratic, but she’s a good person, just a little too enthusiastic.”
Tao Ran nodded. “She does look quite kind.”
Zuo Xian’s heart suddenly started pounding rapidly. She remembered something.
Tao Ran’s pink box had been given to her by Xue Shuangxi.
“You think she looks kind?” Zuo Xian stabilized her voice, trying to appear calm, and cautiously glanced at Tao Ran out of the corner of her eye.
Seeing that Tao Ran’s expression was unchanged, he said lightly, “Yes, she looks very cheerful.”
It seems he didn’t recognize her.
The heavy stone in Zuo Xian’s heart was partially lifted, but then she suddenly felt something wasn’t right.
I’m the one who has a crush on Tao Ran, so why am I the one feeling nervous? This makes no sense!
