- Chapter 16 - The Christmas Party
Zuo Xian, who had already run back to the campus…
Zuo Xian, who had already run back to the campus, gave Jiang Yuhai a look of scorn and immediately turned to leave.
Jiang Yuhai, who was outside the school, couldn’t do anything no matter how furious he was. The security guard at the gate wouldn’t let him in, and he couldn’t force his way in, as he was concerned about maintaining his appearance.
Zuo Xian didn’t want to waste any more time on him and hurried back to class. She sniffed, exhaling a breath, and the white vapor floated upwards.
The bell for the end of class rang precisely as she arrived at the foot of the teaching building.
The hallway was filled with students coming out to use the restroom or fill their water bottles. Zuo Xian reached the third floor and bumped into Tao Ran.
People were constantly coming and going on the staircase. Tao Ran looked at Zuo Xian, who was carrying her schoolbag, first surprised, and then noticed her nose was red from the cold.
She reached out and touched Zuo Xian’s hand; it was also ice-cold.
Tao Ran asked, “Why are you carrying your bag? Where were you going?”
Zuo Xian was utterly exasperated by the mention of it. “It’s all because of Jiang Yuhai. He tricked me into going out. Fortunately, I managed to run back. He must have been planning to drag me to my mother’s company to try and use emotional blackmail.”
Zuo Zhimi and Jiang Yuhai both started their businesses from scratch, but they didn’t start the same home.
When they met, both had achieved some success in their careers. Jiang Yuhai fell in love with Zuo Zhimi at first sight and pursued her. Zuo Zhimi was quite satisfied with him, and the two smoothly entered into marriage.
After Zuo Xian was born, the contradictions between them became increasingly sharp, and the couple divorced by agreement when Zuo Xian was six years old.
Jiang Yuhai was absent from Zuo Xian’s life for several years until his company ran into problems a few years ago. That’s when he remembered that he had an impressive ex-wife.
However, Zuo Zhimi would definitely not help him, so he sought a different approach and began harassing Zuo Xian.
Tao Ran knew about this matter. Hearing Zuo Xian say this, she frowned.
“Should we tell Auntie Zuo?”
Zuo Xian shook her head. “Telling her will only add to my mother’s worries, so no. Anyway, he won’t do anything to me. I’ll just ignore him like a fly.”
Tao Ran held Zuo Xian’s hand, feeling the temperature gradually return. She squeezed it tighter, lowered her eyes, and pondered for a moment.
“If you find dealing with Jiang Yuhai troublesome, I can help you resolve it.”
“Help me resolve it?” Zuo Xian chuckled. “How will you solve it? Will the weather turn cold and the river freeze, young CEO Tao?”
Tao Ran also smiled. “If you want me to, I’ll try my best.”
Zuo Xian just took it as a joke and didn’t take it seriously. At that moment, her attention was already drawn to Tao Ran holding her hand.
She hadn’t even noticed these details herself; being looked after by Tao Ran had become a habit. It wasn’t until recently, when she focused all her attention on Tao Ran, that she realized how much Tao Ran had quietly done.
Zuo Xian squeezed the space between Tao Ran’s thumb and index finger, lowered her gaze, and suddenly asked, “You’re so good to me, don’t you get tired?”
Tired?
Tao Ran thought for a moment and replied, “I haven’t thought about it.”
An unexpected answer came from Tao Ran’s mouth. Her expression was so natural, as if being good to Zuo Xian had long been ingrained in the underlying program of her behavior.
She’s quite the flirt.
Zuo Xian’s face felt a little hot, and she was fortunate that she was outdoors at the moment, so even if she blushed, she could blame it on the temperature. She pursed her lips and looked elsewhere.
“Oh… I’m going back to class first.” She somewhat frantically pulled her hand away and walked quickly towards her classroom.
Hastily returning to class, Zuo Xian had just sat down when the girl in front of her turned around and looked at her in surprise.
“Zuo Xian, didn’t you ask for leave and leave?”
“Um…” Zuo Xian’s eyes shifted, and she casually lied, “It wasn’t a big deal at home, so they told me to come back.”
“I see.” The girl in front comforted her, “It’s good that everything is fine.”
Before she could finish speaking, Xue Shuangxi came over with a stack of books and heavily placed them on the empty desk next to Zuo Xian.
The thick stack of books contained not a single volume that high school students needed to study; they were a dazzling array of obscure professional texts, from finance and economics to management books.
Xue Shuangxi bent down and, without asking, began stuffing these books one by one into Zuo Xian’s schoolbag.
The dark circles under her eyes were so deep they looked like they might fall off, and her face was full of utter hopelessness.
Zuo Xian: “What are you doing?”
“Watering the flowers of the motherland with the rich fertilizer of knowledge.”
“Heh, forget it. The flowers are going to get scorched.” Zuo Xian took all the books out and pushed them back toward Xue Shuangxi.
Xue Shuangxi let out a deep sigh, collapsed onto Zuo Xian’s lap, and began sobbing and bitterly complaining.
“Xue Ying is a lunatic! She’s really a pervert! She’s not human!”
Xue Ying is Xue Shuangxi’s older sister, eight years her senior, and is currently the executive CEO of the Xue family’s company.
Xue Shuangxi howled and cursed, and Zuo Xian didn’t even have the presence of mind to think about her own affairs. She asked with a smile, “What did she do?”
“She’s a lunatic! She wants to sow discord in the family, she wants to viciously attack me, she’s thrown away all past affection!”
“Speak in plain language.”
Xue Shuangxi fell silent for a moment, stood up from the floor, sat back in her chair, and looked dejected.
“She is forcing me to learn all this stuff, saying that I have to inherit the family company later, and I need to learn all this.”
“Hmm?” Zuo Xian was puzzled. “Isn’t your sister…”
“She’s not my biological sister.”
Zuo Xian, who suddenly heard the secret of the Xue family, immediately held her breath.
Xue Shuangxi: “What’s with your expression? Are you a caveman? Everyone in the circle knows about this.”
Zuo Xian shrugged. “My mother never told me.”
“Haven’t your friends gossiped with you?”
“Tao Ran doesn’t like to gossip.”
“…Anyway, Xue Ying is not my biological sister. She said she will leave the Xue family in the future.”
Xue Shuangxi pursed her lips and fell silent. Zuo Xian rarely saw such an expression on her face.
It was heavy and complex, the first time Zuo Xian had glimpsed the tip of the iceberg she deeply hid in her heart.
But this momentary exposure was fleeting. Xue Shuangxi immediately returned to her frivolous self. She pushed the books toward Zuo Xian again.
“Good sister, show some loyalty. You take these books back, read them all, write your reflections, and then hand them in to me, and I’ll submit them.”
“I think you’re the one who wants to viciously attack me,” Zuo Xian said speechlessly. “Do you think I’ll read these books?”
“Oh, come on, don’t you have a young lady at your house? Huh?”
“I’m not going to ask Tao Ran to do hard labor for you. Keep dreaming.”
The two bickered for a few sentences, and before long, they started talking about other things, and the stack of books was deliberately forgotten by Xue Shuangxi in the cubbyhole of the empty desk.
Xue Shuangxi suddenly asked, “It’s Christmas Eve in a couple of days. Do you have any plans to celebrate Christmas?”
“Don’t we have class?” Zuo Xian recalled correctly that Christmas Eve was a Friday.
“We’ll be free in the evening.” Xue Shuangxi smiled, “I’m setting up a party at my house. How about it?”
Ding-a-ling-a-ling—
The bell for class interrupted the rest of Xue Shuangxi’s words. Zuo Xian said she would consider it, but she soon forgot about the matter.
It wasn’t until school was dismissed in the evening that Xue Shuangxi suddenly appeared in front of Zuo Xian and Tao Ran, inviting them to her house for a party on Friday.
