- Chapter 91 - Who Wasn't Invited! It's Hard to Guess
Winter days naturally break later. The streets were shrouded in a thick mist, and occasionally, vendors pushing small carts walked towards a certain destination.
Yue Yiyue stared blankly at the merchandise on the vendor’s stall.
She felt like something was wrong, yet her mind told her that everything was normal.
Perhaps it was because she hadn’t been out alone for a long time.
After all, she spent most of her time with Gu Nanqiu.
Today was different.
Today, she was going to pick up her mother.
Thinking of this, Yue Yiyue’s steps became much lighter.
Her mother said She was on the earliest flight back and would arrive at the airport around 8 AM.
Although her mother had told her not to come, Yue Yiyue still wanted to give her a surprise.
The car she booked arrived at the designated spot.
The license plate, 10y12, caught Yue Yiyue’s eye, making her pause.
She felt like she had seen this black car somewhere before.
Maybe she’d just glimpsed it on the road at some point.
This strange feeling didn’t last long. Yue Yiyue fastened her seatbelt.
“The last four digits of your phone number are xxxx, right?” The driver’s slender hand rested on the phone nearby, tapping away.
Yue Yiyue took out her phone to reply to comments from the netizen the night before and then sent a message to Gu Nanqiu, telling her she was going to pick up her mother first.
The car drove smoothly toward the airport. The car’s audio system happened to be playing the singer Yue Yiyue liked. She leaned back comfortably in the seat, humming along lightly to the music.
“You’re in a good mood.” The woman driving suddenly spoke, her somewhat cool voice reaching Yue Yiyue’s ear, causing an inexplicable numbness.
The voice was close, yet distant.
Yue Yiyue sat in her seat, subconsciously looking over at the driver.
The driver was a woman around thirty, looking very ordinary—eyes were eyes, nose was nose—with long, seaweed-like hair draped over her.
The heater was on in the car. The woman wore a black, tight-fitting sweater, revealing a well-toned figure, suggesting she exercised regularly.
There was a strange sense of incongruity. It was as if this person’s face and body were composed of different, mismatched parts.
The driver noticed Yue Yiyue’s scrutiny, turning her head to look meaningfully at Yue Yiyue before returning her gaze to the steering wheel, focusing intently on the road ahead.
“Is it inconvenient to answer?” The driver gently tapped her little finger on the keyboard: “Speaking of which, this city isn’t very safe lately. You shouldn’t go out too early on weekdays.”
“I’m just going to pick someone up,” Yue Yiyue retracted her slightly rude gaze, gripping the seatbelt and looking forward.
For a moment, Yue Yiyue seemed to see the massive shape of something appear in the dense fog, only to vanish the next instant.
She rubbed her eyes and subconsciously checked her watch; her SAN value was normal.
That thing just now…
“That was a Bizarre Tale that was setting down roots, looking for a place to settle down,” the woman said, sounding completely unconcerned: “You seem very well protected. Try not to go out alone unless absolutely necessary in the future.”
Setting down roots, Bizarre Tale?
The woman next to her seemed to know a thing or two; at least, saying that much revealed She was no ordinary person.
“You…”
“Me?” The woman ran a hand through her hair. The rich scent of osmanthus wafted toward Yue Yiyue, then was carried away by the warm air.
Yue Yiyue nervously twisted her fingers, swallowing the rest of her question: “That sounds tough.”
Not sure what she was rambling about, Yue Yiyue steered the conversation away, looking at the foggy road where cars occasionally overtook them.
“It’s going to be a sunny day today,” Yue Yiyue remarked out of nowhere.
“Yes, it will be a sunny day.” The woman quickly turned the steering wheel, and the car scraped past a mass of something like mud as it changed lanes.
The woman muttered softly: “Seriously, still fighting over fares in the middle of the night to get this one…”
As the car drove past, Yue Yiyue noticed the car that had just overtaken them had flipped over for some unknown reason.
Fortunately, it didn’t explode. She turned to look at the person crawling out, who stood still, then stumbled into the middle of the road.
He looked unusually strange.
The watch on her wrist started beeping, alerting Yue Yiyue to the drop in her SAN value.
Something in this world seemed to have changed silently.
And because she had been staying in a relatively safe place, she hadn’t noticed anything.
The car continued driving smoothly.
The massive structure of the C City airport was now visible, along with the humming sound of landing planes.
“Don’t go out too early.”
Yue Yiyue looked down at the payment successful page on her phone, her peripheral vision catching the car model listed: a white XX car.
A sliver of confusion entered Yue Yiyue’s mind, but it was quickly suppressed by something else. Gu Nanqiu’s call cut in, interrupting Yue Yiyue’s thought process.
Yue Yiyue swiped up on the green button. Gu Nanqiu’s slightly hoarse voice, the sound of someone recently awakened, came through the receiver: “Why did you go pick up Mom all by yourself?”
“I was a little dazed when I woke up and saw the message.”
“You didn’t tell me; I thought Mom was coming on her own,” Gu Nanqiu complained softly: “It’s going to be a bright sunny day, Yiyue. Don’t worry about bringing breakfast back.”
Through the receiver, Yue Yiyue heard the rustling sound of clothes being changed, followed by a ‘ding.’
It was probably the toaster or the air fryer.
In any case, Gu Nanqiu was making breakfast herself.
A slight chewing sound came through the receiver, and it sounded like the TV was turned on.
Yue Yiyue could already picture Gu Nanqiu changed into comfortable loungewear, lying at home with a piece of bread, waiting for her and her mother to return.
Just thinking about the warm scene, all the previous doubts were instantly forgotten, replaced by the image of Gu Nanqiu waiting for her return.
“Nanqiu, it’s too much trouble to come all the way to the airport, and you’ve worked hard cleaning the house these past few days.” Yue Yiyue followed the crowd toward the waiting area. Noticing a milk tea shop in her peripheral vision, she walked toward it: “We’ll be back in about two hours. Can you go ahead and book a table? The New Year is approaching, so we need to reserve a table in advance.”
“As for what to order,” Yue Yiyue pointed to the milk tea she wanted. After fingerprint payment, she named a few dishes her mother would like from memory: “Speaking of which, Mom’s taste is very similar to yours.”
“She likes stir-fried meat with green peppers, pork trotters, and shrimp-type foods.” Yue Yiyue walked to the milk tea waiting area. Five minutes, and she would see her mother.
The robotic female voice announced the flight was about to land.
Yue Yiyue anxiously straightened her clothes.
Holding another steaming hot milk tea in her hand, she looked down, worried that her mother might not like milk tea in the morning, perhaps preferring an iced Americano?
She took a sip of the milk tea she was holding, then worried again that if they couldn’t find a taxi on the way back, it would be embarrassing.
Would Mom feel uncomfortable celebrating the New Year at someone else’s house?
Worrying back and forth, Yue Yiyue sighed softly. Sure enough, the more you care about something, the more you worry.
Her phone gently vibrated. A message from her mother popped up: “I’m wearing black clothes and carrying a bag. I might not be very noticeable. Wait for me to find you. Have you been waiting long?”
“I haven’t been waiting long. I just arrived, too. I’m wearing a blue hoodie, a white scarf, and holding a milk tea.” After replying, Yue Yiyue looked up at the VIP exit.
Black clothes… carrying a bag…
About three minutes later, a tall woman emerged. Her hair was neatly pinned back, revealing a round, full head and a smooth jawline. She was carrying a new L-brand bag and wearing a Chanel-style suit, looking sharp and sophisticated.
Just walking normally, She attracted the attention of many people.
Yue Yiyue was one of those who was drawn to Her.
Just looking at the woman, the image of her mother in Yue Yiyue’s mind became completely solidified.
She looked around, clutching the milk tea in her hand tightly. She should have bought the star-brand one when she arrived.
This overly sweet milk tea in her hand felt utterly unsuitable to give away.
Even the milk tea tucked in her arms for herself felt embarrassing.
For a moment, Yue Yiyue wanted to run away.
She was meeting the mother she had been looking forward to, so why was she feeling this way?
In this world, her mother had always kept her company online, telling her over and over that they were family.
“Yiyue.” The woman stopped in front of Yue Yiyue, familiarly taking the milk tea from Yue Yiyue’s hand, uncovering the lid, and taking a sip: “You always prepare this when I come back. Mmm, it’s rose-flavored this time.”
“Let’s go, accompany me to claim my luggage.” Mother smiled gently, wrapping her other arm around her naive, slightly bewildered daughter, walking together toward the parking lot.
Just like in the TV dramas Yue Yiyue watched, Mother asked about her grades and her current situation.
She complimented her clothes and gently touched her face, saying affectionately: “You’ve lost weight.”
Yue Yiyue held her mother’s arm, answering her questions obediently. With every answer, the smile on Mother’s face deepened, as if She was proud of Yue Yiyue.
They looked like a perfect mother and daughter. None of the things Yue Yiyue worried about came to pass.
Nearing the parking lot, Yue Yiyue gathered the courage to ask her mother if She needed help carrying Her bag.
The strange events encountered on the way were completely forgotten. The value on Yue Yiyue’s watch rapidly climbed. She was happy now.
“Could you take me to see your school these next few days?” Mother handed the bag over, stroking Yue Yiyue’s head: “Your hair has gotten better, too. University makes a difference.”
“Before, I told you your hair was dry and you needed to take care of it, and you said you’d just lose it in college anyway.”
Yue Yiyue remembered that memory. She lowered her head a little embarrassed: “We can go see the school. Our place is very close to it.”
“It’s not just about going to university. It’s my roommate. She taught me and introduced me to a lot of skincare products so my face isn’t so dry.”
Her hands, which were well cared for this winter and free of chilblains, were the best proof.
“I’m relieved you have such a roommate. That’s why I was happy when you asked me to come here for the New Year,” Mother smiled gently: “We should properly thank your roommate when we get back.”
The sun finally broke through the dense fog and shone upon the earth, though the winter sun held little warmth.
Led by her mother, Yue Yiyue got into a large, unbranded car.
As soon as She sat down, Mother pulled out a laptop and began tapping on the keyboard.
“Mom, are you very busy? Do you still have work to do?”
“No.” Mother’s gaze fell on a group chat, where other beings were loudly threatening in the chat that they would definitely show up after the New Year because they were being suppressed from contacting Yue Yiyue.
In a great mood, She took out her phone: “Yiyue, we haven’t taken a picture together in a long time. Let’s take a few more.”
Among them, She was the only one Yue Yiyue invited to celebrate the New Year. Who wasn’t invited?
There are far too many.
