- Chapter 81 - Small Hammer Fifty, Big Hammer Eighty-One
The door creaked open, and heavy leather shoes thudded onto the floor mat, making a muffled sound.
The two people scanned the entire room. One of them, wearing glasses, was visibly impatient, stopping and starting as she looked around. Finally, she kicked the cloth nearby: “Lift the cloth and check it, then we can leave.”
“Huh?” The other person paused, looking at the dusty fabric with some distaste: “No way, that thing is so dirty…”
“Then you go.” The one with glasses stepped back, picking up the badge hanging on her chest and patting the other person’s face, reminding her of the difference in their rank: “What are you standing around for? If you keep dilly-dallying, I’ll toss you directly into the trash yard later.”
Hearing this, the one without glasses flinched. She grumbled about the boss always threatening to toss people into the trash yard.
Her actions, however, were swift. As dust flew everywhere, the two glanced at the five or six sculptures underneath. Nothing seemed wrong.
“Let’s go, let’s go.” The one with glasses rubbed her face: “This place? Who could possibly find it? Only the boss insists on paying attention to every detail. There are only six items left before this thing goes on stage. You’re a newbie, so don’t say I didn’t warn you. Remember to wear sunglasses then, or if you get absorbed, there’ll be no way to save you.”
“Honestly, if that Yue Yiyue could make it here, I’ll write my name backward.”
“Yes, yes, thank you for the reminder, big sister. The boss is just too meticulous about details. Let’s get out of here quickly. This place, tsk, Old Yang came in last time and never left. It’s too ominous. Let’s hurry.”
Yue Yiyue, crouching behind a sculpture, put down the small hammer in her hand. Listening to the sound of the door closing, she cautiously peered out.
Seeing the door shut tight, Yue Yiyue stayed crouched for a few more minutes to ensure they wouldn’t return. Only then did she get up and look at the six sculptures before her.
They all looked exactly the same.
Even the three marks on their ears were identical.
As expected, something that can be left here without strict supervision must have a hidden secret.
Moreover, that person just said someone came in and never left.
Yue Yiyue stared at the sculptures. Could they have been eaten by this sculpture?
After all, those chess-piece people had merged with those sculptures.
As Yue Yiyue hesitated, unsure which one to hit, the sculptures started speaking.
“Are you here to destroy me too?” The first sculpture spoke up first. Its voice carried a hint of pitifulness.
“If so, please seize the opportunity. If you fail to break the real sculpture this time, you will merge with me,” the third sculpture kindly warned.
The fourth sculpture quickly interjected: “This is the last rule here. Please distinguish the real sculpture, smash the real sculpture to win the game, or fail and become one with the sculpture.”
So that’s how it is. That person must have found a way to get out, painstakingly forced their way here, and lost at this final step.
Listening to the voice that sounded like Gu Nanqiu’s, and seeing the face that looked like Gu Nanqiu’s, Yue Yiyue stood still and started thinking.
“You only have one chance. Also, the door is now locked. You cannot leave this room before making a choice.”
The second sculpture further elaborated. Yue Yiyue lightly hummed in acknowledgment and meticulously observed the sculptures.
“Were you conscious when you arrived here?” After observing them once, Yue Yiyue asked abruptly: “Do you have any other kind of perception?”
Yue Yiyue glanced over the six sculptures. She stared directly at the one on the far edge, then walked two steps to stand in front of this sculpture, which looked no different from the others, and asked softly.
“I was just moved here a few days ago. Before that, I was always taken to many places. I couldn’t see, I could only hear sounds. They were all so noisy, especially noisy.” The sculpture’s voice was cold, merely stating its experience.
These words changed their meaning in Yue Yiyue’s ears: “Are you tired of this kind of life?”
“I guess so…” The sculpture wondered why it was answering the questions of this young person who had suddenly intruded, looking like she wanted to bring them to an end.
But the sculpture inexplicably felt compelled to respond.
A warm hand landed on the surface of the sculpture, feeling the texture and gently tracing the mangled eye sockets: “If you can’t see, do you also feel a sense of unease?”
“Then, if I smash you, will you be able to go back?”
Yue Yiyue didn’t know what part of the sculpture would return or where it would go, but she had to clarify this, as it related to her next step.
The sculpture was momentarily stunned. This human seemed to know it, or perhaps had strange feelings for it.
It hesitated for a long time, thinking about whether to tell the truth or a lie.
The countdown on the watch entered the final seven minutes. Yue Yiyue wasn’t in a hurry. She sat down next to the first sculpture: “Take your time to think. Let me lean on your pillar for a moment.”
“No need. I will go back. Don’t sit on the floor, and don’t lean on me. I am cold.”
Hearing this, Yue Yiyue’s lips curled up slightly: “Hmm, I’ll listen to you. Where will you go back to?”
These words plunged the sculpture into past memories. After a while, It finally spoke: “I am a strand stolen by Them. I should first return to the clone to gather the fragments, and then follow the clone back to the main body.”
Selecting through Its memories, It complained: “I always hear Her roaring at me in the middle of the night, asking why I don’t respond to Her.”
“She is just an imitator, only imitating Qiu. Whatever Qiu does, She does too. A copycat, so annoying.”
“Later, She said She wanted to become the most outstanding person and then lock Qiu up.” It grumbled grumpily: “Are you going to avenge me?”
“If you are going to avenge me, I can tell you which one is real. If you smash it, She will just be an ordinary, insignificant little ant~”
“I promise you can lock me up for a while afterward. Not too long, though, I still have someone I need to find.”
With a cheerful voice, It clearly expressed its willingness to give this accidental intruder a chance to resist.
“I don’t like you lying,” Yue Yiyue didn’t take the bait. She bent down, picked up the hammer nearby, and looked at the sculpture: “I don’t have time to listen to your grievances now. How about I just smash you, and I’ll console you later?”
“That is, assuming you retain the memory of this place.”
She was starting to think that if Gu Nanqiu wouldn’t have this memory, she should just smash it.
But now it seemed that even if Gu Nanqiu didn’t know, Curator Qiu would.
It was unclear if their memories were shared. And what was the “main body” the sculpture spoke of?
Gather a certain amount of Qiu fragments, and you can piece together a big Qiu?
Well, she was just an ordinary person and didn’t understand. She would try her best to understand, respect, and accept it later.
“Are you sure it’s me?” Hearing this, the sculpture reverted to its emotionless state, asking coldly: “Are you really sure it’s me? Then I can only apologize—”
“Yes, you are different from Them,” Yue Yiyue looked earnestly at the sculpture after it finished speaking: “You give me a sense of aloofness here, which makes me feel you are different from the other sculptures, giving me a mysterious feeling, just like the feeling Curator Qiu gives me.”
“These things are absent in the other sculptures.” Yue Yiyue tried to recite as sincerely as possible. To keep up with the times, she had secretly memorized many popular phrases at night, and now she was finally using them. She glanced at the sculpture and continued reciting passionately: “Perhaps you don’t know who I am now, but when you return to the clone you spoke of, you will remember me. You will know why I could recognize you here at a glance, and you will understand the sentiment beneath these words.”
“I look forward to the moment we recognize each other after I smash you and you return to your main body.”
The sculpture was silent for a moment. The room was deathly quiet.
“Y… Yiyue.” The sculpture’s uncertain voice sounded, but this time the tone was not as cold as before. It had a viscous, cloyingly sweet timbre that was unsettling: “It’s you—it really is! I don’t have eyes, and my ears have other things added, so I couldn’t recognize your voice, but I didn’t expect you to recognize me directly here. It seems you really are…”
It didn’t finish the sentence, but the joyful tone revealed a strange satisfaction: “Quickly smash me! It’s me, it’s me!”
“Once you smash me, you will completely win—”
“Ah, right. Did you hear those sculptures say anything strange just now? Being locked up here for a long time, I often feel lonely, so I can only fabricate stories to keep myself company. There are many lies in those things, which I did for self-preservation. You can understand that, right?”
“I am also a victim. That damned Mu Hongcai, she has a strange person beside her who can draw out a wisp of me and put it into the sculpture. She initially thought she could obtain me that way, but she didn’t realize she couldn’t carve even a tiny bit of my beauty! That’s why I look like this.”
After complaining, It smiled eerily: “If it were you, of course, you wouldn’t need to carve me. I already belong to you—”
“It seems I’ve talked a bit too much again. Hurry up. Smash me quickly. When we meet later, can you give me a hug?”
“I crave your warmth so much. Just let me hold you—”
The moment the sculpture finished speaking, It felt Itself enveloped in a warm embrace. Then, It heard Yue Yiyue’s voice: “Right now is fine. And of course, I will give you another hug when I see you later.”
She lowered her head and gently kissed the incomplete eyes: “You are perfect as you are. Will it hurt to smash you?”
“Yiyue… it will hurt a little, but it’s all so we can reunite.” Having received Yue Yiyue’s hug and kiss, It tried its best to control Itself from directly swallowing Yue Yiyue into Its body, allowing Them to truly merge: “It’s alright, Yiyue. I’m not afraid of pain. I’m happy to be smashed by you.”
With only one minute left on the watch’s countdown, Yue Yiyue no longer hesitated. She raised the hammer in her hand: “Then I’ll see you later.”
“Mmm—see you later!”
