- Chapter 56 - Yue Yiyao: What Kind of Acting is Needed to Participate in a Play? (Thinking)
Wu Zhen looked at Yue Yiyao, who wasn’t repelled by her presence, and felt a sense of relief. It was a good thing their relationship hadn’t been affected by the He Wu incident.
Even though they were, at most, slightly more than strangers who had crossed paths.
“Can I join you?” Wu Zhen hesitated for a long time, watching Yue Yiyao sprawled on the sofa like a lazy fish.
“Join me?” Yue Yiyao lazily removed the towel covering her eyes. She glanced at Wu Zhen standing next to her, not understanding the motivation behind the question.
Was she seeking revenge for her cousin after finding out who was responsible?
Although Wu Zhen had casually mentioned earlier that her cousin had a good relationship with her father, it sounded as if she had no other agenda.
But Yue Yiyao wouldn’t be foolish enough to think that a potential competitor, having died, should still be retrieved.
What exactly was Wu Zhen up to?
Under Yue Yiyao’s scrutiny, Wu Zhen sighed: “I estimate my cousin won’t be coming back, but if I leave things like this, I can’t face my father. I want to try, at least to collect his remains and bring them back.”
“And then there’s Gu Nanqiu.” Wu Zhen’s eyes became slightly more resolute as she spoke: “Everyone is worried about her sudden disappearance and hopes she can return soon.”
“Moreover, I suspect He Wu was the one who made the wish.”
When Wu Zhen put it that way, it did seem plausible. He Wu’s affection for Gu Nanqiu was traceable.
Everything sounded rational, and Wu Zhen’s appearance was remarkably coincidental.
Yue Yiyao sat there and pondered for a moment: “Do you have any evidence? Since you suggested it, you must prove it.”
“A few days ago, I passed He Wu’s room and heard some strange sounds coming from inside. They were low, but very odd. I pressed against the door and listened for a while, hearing one sentence about how, once the deed was done, he could take her home.”
Wu Zhen frowned, trying hard to recall the events of the past few days: “I also saw him posting on a shady, dark forum. After he left, I went over and took a look. Someone was giving him advice, saying they had found a suitable girlfriend using this method and now had endless money, telling He Wu not to worry, because the God would fulfill all his wishes.”
Yue Yiyao had looked into it earlier. There were many rumors circulating around the school about the He siblings.
Her cousin, He Wu, was quite abstract—dressed in designer brands, very flashy, and avoided by many.
Most people said he was shameless and wanted a share of Wu Zhen’s possessions.
And Wu Zhen’s father was also clueless, choosing to marry into the family (zuixu – son-in-law who lives with the wife’s family) and treating his nephew like a treasure. Anyone with sense could tell he intended to rely on his nephew to ultimately claim the inheritance from the wife’s family.
Wu Zhen was truly miserable, having lost her mother early on.
Watching Wu Zhen lead the way, Yue Yiyao curiously asked: “Are you truly not bothered by your cousin’s matter?”
“Isn’t it convenient that he’s dead? You’ll be unburdened afterward?”
Wu Zhen looked up at the sky, but her expression didn’t seem focused on the sky: “You can’t say that. He Wu and I grew up together. Our relationship is complex, and many things he did were not entirely his choice.”
In the end, just like the countless versions Yue Yiyao had heard, Wu Zhen’s final words were always the same: “He was a good cousin, I just wasn’t a particularly qualified older cousin.”
Fine. Respect and blessing.
Yue Yiyao didn’t like getting involved in such domestic matters; she didn’t have a family herself.
No, that’s not right. She has one now.
“I understand. That was unnecessary of me. How much further is it?”
They were currently on their way to Wu Zhen’s house.
Wu Zhen had proposed this half an hour ago: that Yue Yiyao follow her back to check He Wu’s computer to see if they could find that forum.
Perhaps they could find the information she wanted.
Yue Yiyao was preparing to refuse, but the buzzing of her phone interrupted her. She took out her phone to check the message.
After reading the information, Yue Yiyao suddenly changed her mind: “Okay, I’ll go with you.”
Just like that, they took a taxi to the small villa complex.
Leaving aside everything else, the air quality in this area was quite good. Yue Yiyao took a deep breath, feeling much more comfortable in her lungs.
It felt as though the squeezing by those eyeballs just moments ago was all a nightmare.
Yue Yiyao wasn’t sure if it was her imagination, but the closer they got to the house, the more she smelled an indescribable scorched odor.
Yet, looking around, nothing seemed to be on fire.
Noticing Yue Yiyao’s small action, Wu Zhen took two breaths: “If I’m not mistaken, it’s my father. He must have burnt something he was cooking.”
“He is getting on in years and is sometimes confused. Student Yue Yiyao, I’ll go check first. The shoes are at the door; please change into them yourself.” After speaking, she rushed into the house, leaving the door ajar for Yue Yiyao.
Watching the figure disappear, Yue Yiyao quickly followed.
“You bringer of misfortune! You killed your mother, and now you’ve killed your cousin. Are you coming back to kill me next?” A scolding voice came from inside the house, strangely hoarse, like a broken accordion or smoked cured meat.
In short, it wasn’t a pleasant sound.
“Bringer of misfortune, did you think your cousin wanted to take your things, so you killed him?”
“These things were rightfully his! But you, why are you fixated on the property of our Old He family? I told you, everything your mother had is mine now, and everything I have belongs to the Old He family.”
“You are the outsider in this house. Get out—”
There was a crashing sound from the inner room, seemingly something heavy being thrown and hitting someone.
Yue Yiyao was about to rush in and pull Wu Zhen out when she saw Wu Zhen walking out, covering her face.
There was a large handprint on her face, and bruises on her hands.
Yue Yiyao stopped. She silently looked at the half-closed door behind Wu Zhen, and inside, the window curtain was slightly burnt. Next to it was a large puddle of water, which looked like Wu Zhen had just used to put out a small fire.
Wu Zhen shook her head at Yue Yiyao, managing a forced smile, and then closed the door behind her, blocking Yue Yiyao’s view: “My father is not in a good mood these two days because of my cousin’s matter. Excuse the scene.”
“Let’s go upstairs first. My room is up there.”
“I apologize.”
“Do you need help?” Yue Yiyao still stared at the door behind Wu Zhen: “Your mother’s possessions, unless she wrote a will specifically stating they all go to your father.”
“I’ve heard about your mother, Wu Yushan. She was an excellent entrepreneur. I don’t believe she was short-sighted enough to truly let your incompetent father manage everything.”
Wu Zhen’s eyes flickered. She seemed surprised to hear her mother’s name mentioned by Yue Yiyao.
After a long pause, she sighed, not in resentment, but in a tone of resignation: “He is the only father I have…”
“If your thoughts change, you can still tell me.” Yue Yiyao left this sentence hanging and walked up the stairs.
Wu Zhen looked at Yue Yiyao, feeling somewhat puzzled. She thought Yue Yiyao seemed to be implying more than just what she said.
The second floor had four rooms in total. Yue Yiyao quickly surveyed them. The largest room was likely He Wu’s; she could see the clothes he had worn a few days ago right upon entering.
Yue Yiyao couldn’t tell who owned the two slightly smaller rooms next to it, but the tiny room in the corner was definitely Wu Zhen’s.
Yue Yiyao frowned, but remembering the message on her phone, she kept quiet.
“The structure here is quite straightforward, so I won’t introduce it further.” Wu Zhen pointed to the largest room: “Go on. The computer is there. I’ll go grab you something to eat.”
“Thank you.”
After saying this, Yue Yiyao walked into the room and turned on the computer.
As the fan started spinning, the black screen began to flash blue.
She clicked on the browser, opened the browsing history, and two familiar website addresses, entered just days ago, popped up.
What a perfect trap.
Yue Yiyao admired the setup on the computer. She wasn’t in a hurry to click the link but took out her phone and sent four messages.
There seemed to be the sound of heavy objects hitting the floor downstairs again, and the scorched smell in the air grew stronger.
Yue Yiyao confirmed the last received text message in her inbox. She felt relieved that the person who frequently sent nuisance messages had once again sent her a useful piece of information.
A fire had occurred in this area a few years ago due to an electrical fault.
She pressed the mouse, and the image of the cake appeared on the screen. Yue Yiyao looked down at her phone; the signal had indeed completely vanished.
This place seemed the same as before, yet everything felt different.
Yue Yiyao stood up, and she heard a voice that was too familiar: Gu Nanqiu’s, next door.
“Yiyao, didn’t you say you were going out? Why are you still here?”
Following the voice, Yue Yiyao, recalling the scenes from the novel, pushed open the nearby door.
The room was nicely furnished, but far inferior to their own room.
Behind the door was Gu Nanqiu, facing Wu Zhen, calling out to Yue Yiyao. She smiled and handed over her bag, urging Wu Zhen to hurry and leave.
Wu Zhen looked at Gu Nanqiu’s appearance and reached out to stroke Gu Nanqiu’s head, but the other woman stepped back.
“That’s not good, Yiyao. We just confirmed our relationship. I’m not quite used to too much intimacy. I’m sorry.”
This scene was strange. Yue Yiyao was a little confused about which act of the play was currently being performed.
But she could confirm that only Wu Zhen could see her in the room.
Wu Zhen looked at Yue Yiyao standing at the doorway and provoked her: “See, as long as I become you, Gu Nanqiu will love me, love me enough to stay here.”
The lip movements were too fast for Yue Yiyao to clearly see, but she still put on an angry expression, glaring fiercely at Wu Zhen.
Wu Zhen ignored her. Holding the backpack, she said: “I understand. I’ll give you time to get used to it. Thank you for being willing to love me. Wait for me to come back. It’s not safe outside right now… if you go out…”
“I understand.” Gu Nanqiu thoughtfully took a piece of clothing from the closet: “There are more and more rules lately. I don’t really want to go out. I’m always worried about triggering something and being hunted down by that Box Head again. You should leave quickly.”
Saying this, she pushed Wu Zhen out and closed the door.
The sound of footsteps outside grew distant until they vanished.
Yue Yiyao stood in the corner, observing Gu Nanqiu and contemplating what her next move would be.
Or how she could convey information to Gu Nanqiu, letting her know she had arrived.
The next moment, Gu Nanqiu walked to the bed. She patted the bed, then inexplicably turned and drew the curtains. The lights in the room went out.
The entire room plunged into darkness.
Squeak. That was the sound of Gu Nanqiu climbing into bed.
Yue Yiyao sighed and immediately followed suit, climbing onto the small bed.
A somewhat cold hand covered Yue Yiyao’s hand, then rubbed her fingertips, as if confirming something.
It was only then that Yue Yiyao realized Gu Nanqiu knew she had come.
And, using some method she didn’t know, Gu Nanqiu could touch her.
