- My Sister Never Said She Was a Creepy Tale
- Chapter 45 - Gu Nanqiu: Wait, Something's Not Right?
Yue Yiyue woke up in a car.
A suit jacket covered her, carrying a pleasant scent of lavender.
Outside the car window, a point of orange light flickered distinctly. Yue Yiyue focused and realized Ye Qiu was outside the car, smoking.
C City was just entering autumn, so it wasn’t particularly cold. The woman wore a thin shirt, her expression calm, a slender lady’s cigarette dangling from her bloodless lips.
Her dark hair was casually draped over her shoulders. She leaned against a tree next to the car, looking up at the sky, lost in thought.
Hearing movement inside the car, her dark, deep eyes looked over, carrying an undeniable invasiveness.
Her index finger curved slightly, tapping the glass, and her slender hand gestured downward, signaling Yue Yiyue to roll down the window.
“There’s a thermos at your feet. Inside is some soup I packed for you. Drink it while it’s hot to settle your stomach. I’ll take you back later.”
“I was a bit bored waiting for you to wake up, so I smoked one. Don’t mind, do you?” Ye Qiu took a step back, pressed the cigarette out on a nearby trash can, and tossed it in.
She took a spray bottle from her pocket, sprayed herself a few times, and then leaned against the car, airing out the scent.
The air carried a faint strawberry smell, likely the scent of the cigarette Ye Qiu smoked. It wasn’t unpleasant.
“Smoke less, it’s not good for your health.”
But she still subconsciously offered the warning.
“I smoke little, only when I’m particularly depressed.” Ye Qiu smiled gently at Yue Yiyue: “We meet again. Yu Man said yesterday that she’d like to treat you to a meal sometime. She finds you interesting and wants to hear the story of you and… Gu Nanqiu.”
Yue Yiyue felt it might be her misconception, but she thought Ye Qiu said this with deliberate emphasis.
However, she wasn’t vain enough to think Ye Qiu was interested in her.
She just felt embarrassed for having troubled her twice.
“Okay, thank you. Why are you depressed, though? Is it something you can tell me about?”
Ye Qiu rubbed her hair, leaned on the car, and looked up at the slightly desolate moon.
“It’s nothing major, just a little tired. Fortunately, I can stop and rest tonight.” Ye Qiu maintained her light, indifferent demeanor.
But Yue Yiyue still caught the dark circles under Ye Qiu’s eyes. They were conspicuous on her jade-like face, making her look a little haggard, yet adding a hint of feminine melancholy.
Maybe she’s tired from writing, Yue Yiyue thought.
She opened the lid of the food box. Inside was lotus root and pork rib soup. She tasted it; it was quite good.
“Have you eaten?” Yue Yiyue held up the bowl.
“I have.”
The only sound that followed was Yue Yiyue’s quiet slurping of soup.
Ye Qiu occasionally glanced at Yue Yiyue, who drank the soup in small sips, like a puppy, terribly cute.
Half an hour later, Ye Qiu dropped Yue Yiyue off at the entrance of her residential complex.
“Sister Ye Qiu, wait for me.” Yue Yiyue hurriedly said as she got out of the car, then ran to the supermarket.
A moment later, she came out with a pile of colorful snacks and candies.
Ye Qiu looked at Yue Yiyue in surprise, wondering what she was doing.
“This oolong tea is for refreshing yourself. You can drink it when you’re tired from writing. And these potato chips, you can eat them while you write. They’re crunchy and make you happy.”
“These are mints, and this biscuit—if you want to smoke, you can try biting onto one of these.”
Yue Yiyue panted, telling Ye Qiu the best way to eat the snacks in her hands, carefully instructing her: “There’s no fruit store here. I’ll buy some for you next time, Sister Ye Qiu. I’ll treat you to a meal when I’m free in a few days. Thank you for tonight.”
“Mhm, you’re welcome.”
Ye Qiu looked at the things she didn’t particularly care for, but for a moment, they didn’t seem so annoying.
After returning home, she greeted Gu Nanqiu, and they shared a simple meal together.
Yue Yiyue had expected Gu Nanqiu to ask why she came back so late or what she had been busy with.
But nothing was asked.
Gu Nanqiu was strangely quiet tonight, making Yue Yiyue feel uneasy.
After silently finishing the meal and tidying the table, Gu Nanqiu handed the dishes to Yue Yiyue, then sat back on the sofa, typing on her computer.
Gu Nanqiu was too out of character tonight. Yue Yiyue looked at her once more, then retreated into the kitchen with the dishes.
Yue Yiyue felt it was odd, yet she also felt this was normal.
Perhaps Gu Nanqiu had grown up. That would be okay.
The water rushed loudly. A splash landed on the dishes already washed nearby. In a trance, Yue Yiyue heard someone humming a song.
The sound was small and muffled by the wall, not quite clear, but definitely coming from the other side of the wall.
Suddenly, the sound of water stopped. Yue Yiyue frowned, looking at the water stream that had ceased flowing.
Realizing something was wrong, Yue Yiyue’s mind screamed for her to leave, but her body was rooted to the spot, forced to listen.
The voice was slightly high-pitched, jarringly prominent in the empty kitchen.
“Little baby three, chasing the moon,”
“Can’t catch it, dig out the heart.”
“Sister drinks blood, brother eats meat.”
“Little baby three, chasing the moon.”
Little baby three… chasing the moon… heart… blood.
Yue Yiyue’s pupils contracted, her eyelashes trembling. Little baby three probably had no meaning, just a placeholder name.
“Are you listening?”
“You are listening.”
“They’ve fixed their gaze on you. You’ll come to join us soon, hey.”
“Want to run? Can’t run…”
“They will always, always, always, always, always watch, watch, watch…”
The voice outside the wall abruptly stopped.
“Yiyue, did you hear that sound just now?” Gu Nanqiu stood at the kitchen doorway, leaning on the door frame, her face pale. Her dark lashes trembled slightly, and her eyes held a hint of panic.
“I kept hearing that sound at home today, but it seems there’s something in the house, so they can’t get in.”
“Am I having a problem?”
Her eyes showed innocence and confusion, as if she were truly fragile.
Yue Yiyue internally scoffed; if she were truly fragile, those things would have rushed in and started chopping them down long ago.
But it was fine for Gu Nanqiu to hide some harmless little secrets.
For Gu Nanqiu, she could always find a reasonable explanation for her actions.
Yue Yiyue wiped her hands dry, neatly placed the dishes, and finally, just before the person at the door ran completely out of patience, offered an honest smile: “You’re not having a problem. There’s something out there saying some interesting things.”
Yue Yiyue focused on Gu Nanqiu, covering Gu Nanqiu’s hand with hers, their hands intertwined. She felt Gu Nanqiu’s temperature, which was slightly lower than her own: “Look how scared my Nanqiu is.”
She said this while leading the person out of the kitchen and seating her on the sofa. Under the soft light, Yue Yiyue spoke, just like she used to comfort her sister: “How about I hug you to sleep tonight?”
When Gu Nanqiu heard Yue Yiyue use the word my, she felt her human heart inexplicably stir with strange emotion, like a bee that had flown into a honey pot and been soaked through with sweetness, making her feel dizzy.
She restrained her lips from curving upwards and said with a slight bashfulness: “I don’t think that’s a good idea.”
“I watched TV drama all afternoon and realized our dynamic might be a little inappropriate.”
“Yiyue, I must have caused you trouble before, so I’m going to be careful.” Gu Nanqiu’s words were utterly sincere.
Yue Yiyue thought seriously, analyzing word by word: “I see. You mean you want to sleep in the master bedroom. Understood…”
?
That night, Gu Nanqiu looked on in disbelief as Yue Yiyue spent five minutes changing the sheets in the master bedroom, moving over the stuffed animal she often hugged while sleeping, and placing her usual aromatherapy diffuser by the bedside.
Then, she thoughtfully spent twenty minutes cleaning up the corners of the room.
Gu Nanqiu: ???
Yue Yiyue looked at the clean and tidy room. She clapped her hands: “All done! You can have a good night’s sleep tonight!”
Gu Nanqiu: ?????
That damned Ye Qiu!!! What kind of terrible idea did she give me!!!!!
The holiday rushed to an end, and Yue Yiyue returned to her studies.
Except for the fact that she always felt like something was staring at her when she slept recently.
Gu Ye looked at the refreshed Yue Yiyue after the break. She pushed the milk tea in front of Yue Yiyue: “You look like you had a good holiday.”
“It was alright. I had a small therapy session in the middle. I feel like something is different about me since then.” Yue Yiyue took out her books. She had to accompany Gu Nanqiu to class this afternoon, and tomorrow morning too.
Hmm, I’ll eat at the cafeteria at noon.
Gu Ye saw the look on Yue Yiyue’s face and knew she was thinking about Gu Nanqiu again. She leaned closer unhappily: “Speaking of which, Yiyue, do you know about the Box-Head killer who’s been on a rampage lately?”
“He’s been operating around the school, and I have reliable insider information that he’s a student here.”
Thinking back to that time when I ate some unsavory snacks to quickly gain strength, I still managed to carve out a territory next to Yue Yiyue.
All in all, that’s better than that woman still running around, and that idiot trapped in that place and fighting with Jealousy.
She counted on her fingers; two more were still sleeping. When they woke up, they could proceed to the next step.
And now…
She would be a qualified NPC…
The information Gu Ye provided this morning made Yue Yiyue uneasy.
That Box-Head was hiding in the school.
Was this part of the original plot?
Yue Yiyue couldn’t remember.
She had gotten used to constantly forgetting the original plot details.
After all, if she remembered everything, it wouldn’t be fair to the people in this world.
The cafeteria was a bit far from Gu Nanqiu’s classroom.
Yue Yiyue confirmed Gu Nanqiu was almost at her classroom, so she carried a can of milk and headed toward the teaching building.
Gu Nanqiu’s classroom was on the fourth floor, 401.
It was still early, and there were few people in the teaching building. Yue Yiyue walked briskly towards her destination.
“Nanqiu, I have something I want to tell you—”
Passing a corner, Yue Yiyue heard Xie Ying’s voice.
Her voice was trembling. It seemed she had mustered great courage to come and find Gu Nanqiu to talk.
Yue Yiyue subconsciously stopped, waiting for Xie Ying to continue.
“Don’t walk alone these days. That crazy He Wu…”
“He’s not right. You must avoid him if you see him recently. He’s not right.”
Xie Ying tried to voice what she had seen, but finally found that no matter how she opened her mouth, she couldn’t make a sound.
Her face was pale with anxiety, and she kept gesturing frantically.
In the very end, she vomited a mouthful of blood, using the last of her sanity to gasp: “Run—escape—”
