- Chapter 43 - Yue Yiyue: I Shouldn't Have Eaten This Barbecue
“What are you in such a hurry to explain?” Yue Yiyue glanced at Gu Nanqiu, somewhat puzzled. She held out her hand to Gu Nanqiu: “Nanqiu, forget about that person. The priority is for you to help me up! My legs are numb from squatting!”
“Okay!” Gu Nanqiu stifled a laugh and pulled Yue Yiyue up. She eagerly offered: “Yiyue, are your legs okay? Should I massage them for you? Of course, I’d be very willing to carry you too~”
Yue Yiyue, using Gu Nanqiu’s strength, stood up shakily: “Thank you—wait! I haven’t finished—”
The sudden lift left Yue Yiyue instinctively grabbing Gu Nanqiu’s collar, wanting to struggle but having to give up because of her numb legs.
Gu Nanqiu had Yue Yiyue hold the bag of fruit, then weighed the person in her arms: “Yiyue, you’ve gained weight since before.”
She leaned her face closer, demanding praise: “Quick, compliment me. Didn’t I take good care of you?”
“I don’t mean that you didn’t take good care of yourself, either. Anyway, I think you owe me a kiss.”
“In front of the police station! On the main street!” Yue Yiyue saw curious passersby occasionally looking their way. She gave up struggling and buried her face in Gu Nanqiu’s neck.
“Fine, then we’ll kiss when we get back. You can kiss me however you want then.” Gu Nanqiu saw the person in her arms blushing. Her lips curled slightly, and a smile spread across her face, like the warm spring breeze in March.
“Ouch.”
A cry of pain from someone tripping sounded nearby. Yue Yiyue curiously peeked out and saw a passerby awkwardly bumping into a utility pole.
It seemed they were so mesmerized by Gu Nanqiu that they accidentally walked into the pole.
She looked up at Gu Nanqiu’s face, bathed in the spring-like smile.
The face was still familiar.
But Yue Yiyue increasingly felt that this face resembled Ye Qiu’s.
“Is there something wrong with my face?” Gu Nanqiu lowered her gaze, her eyes mysteriously dewy and moist.
From Yue Yiyue’s perspective, Gu Nanqiu’s face was bright and grand, like a blooming peony.
When she looked down at her, there was a trace of divine compassion in her eyes, and Yue Yiyue always felt calm when she was gazed upon by her.
At the same time, Yue Yiyue had a strange feeling: she thought she should bite Gu Nanqiu when they got back.
At least she should bite back the one she took last time.
Realizing she had been staring for too long, Yue Yiyue awkwardly shifted her gaze. She rested on Gu Nanqiu’s shoulder, looked at the fallen leaves on the ground, and whispered: “Nothing. I just think you’re as pretty as Ye Qiu.”
“Is that so?” Gu Nanqiu’s smile brightened: “Mhm, thank you.”
The two then found a barbecue shop in the nearby snack street.
Ever since Gu Nanqiu entered the shop, the owner’s gaze had been fixed on her. Only after Gu Nanqiu reminded her again that she wanted ten squid skewers, twenty grilled meat skewers, forty beef skewers, three cabbage skewers, and a plate of fried noodles, all medium spicy, did the owner snap out of it. She grabbed a handful of beef skewers without counting and handed them to a staff member: “Quick, go grill these.”
She then hastily changed the tablecloth to a brand new one and wiped down the chairs.
Afterward, she stood near their table, occasionally looking at Gu Nanqiu, worried she might need something and the owner would be too far to help promptly.
However, after Gu Nanqiu came in, the shop’s customer traffic also increased.
It quickly became full.
The owner had no choice but to tend to other customers.
The shop was extremely noisy.
They could hear people nearby constantly nudging each other: “You go.”
“But she looks so aloof.”
“Should we settle for the one across from her?”
“That one looks even fiercer…”
Yue Yiyue, sitting and waiting for the barbecue, stared at the beer in the fridge. She was a bit curious about the taste.
But she still thought it couldn’t be as good as plain water.
“Yiyue, forget about that. If you want some, I can buy some red wine or something with a lower alcohol content for home. Of course, I can also mix you a drink if you need it.”
“No need.”
While they chatted, a staff member brought over a heavily laden plate that even included chicken wings.
Yue Yiyue poked at it: “Did you order so many skewers?”
Gu Nanqiu tilted her head: “When do I ever order food without the vendor giving me extra?”
That was true.
But this time it was excessively generous.
“Let’s give them a bit extra when we pay.” Yue Yiyue took out a chicken wing, deftly removed the bones, plated the meat, and handed it over: “What about the rest we can’t eat?”
Gu Nanqiu had just finished deboning a small yellow croaker. She dutifully presented her carefully plated food to Yue Yiyue: “I plated a small portion of the fried noodles for you. Should we get the rest packed up? We can buy two cups of milk tea, watch a movie, and I’ll eat it slowly.”
“I know this place tastes good, but it’s usually not this packed at this hour,” a boisterous male voice complained from the entrance.
“Boss, you really should have…”
“Hey, isn’t that our department beauty?” A man walked in at the door. He had just been complaining with a sour face, but his eyes lit up when he saw Gu Nanqiu: “Boss, I know the people at that table. We’ll share a table with them.”
“He Wu, did you ask Nanqiu what she thinks?” A scolding female voice followed closely behind.
“Nanqiu, I’m sorry, there are no other seats here. We’re meeting here for a gathering. Is it okay if we share a table?”
Gu Nanqiu didn’t answer immediately. She looked at Yue Yiyue across from her: “These are classmates from our class, Wu Zhen. Yiyue, do you mind sharing a table?”
Yue Yiyue looked at the food on the table, which was clearly more than two people could eat. She stood up and sat next to Gu Nanqiu: “That’s fine. You can help us finish some of this, too.”
Seeing this, Wu Zhen shouted towards the outside, and a slightly shorter girl came in: “I’m Xie Ying. Hey, Gu Nanqiu, I didn’t expect you to be here today. What a coincidence. Who is this next to you?”
“Yue Yiyue from the Chinese department.”
They exchanged simple greetings, going through the motions.
Wu Zhen dragged over a square table and moved three stools over.
The table was now shared.
Wu Zhen wiped the menu clean and asked Gu Nanqiu if she wanted to add anything else, offering to pay.
Gu Nanqiu looked at Yue Yiyue, shook her head, and declined the menu: “No, that’s enough. Just finishing all this will be fine.”
Wu Zhen could only offer an awkward smile and sit back down. She picked up a skewer from Gu Nanqiu’s front: “I’m a little hungry. I’ll eat some of yours to tide me over, okay, Nanqiu?”
After getting permission, she busied herself selecting some for He Wu and Xie Ying, and refilling everyone’s water glasses.
She stepped out briefly and bought a cup of freshly squeezed watermelon juice for Gu Nanqiu.
At the table, they discussed homework, talked about two more classes being added after the holiday, and complained about a strict teacher. He Wu occasionally steered the conversation toward Wu Zhen.
He mentioned that Wu Zhen was a great person, had taken care of him since childhood, and was thoughtful.
Gu Nanqiu ate elegantly, seemingly oblivious to their conversation, but occasionally leaned over to add two sentences for Yiyue: “Yes, I’ll have less time to accompany you next week. Just order takeout and wait for me at home then.”
“That teacher’s lectures are quite interesting. If you’re interested, come with me next time.”
“Just keep me company, please~”
He Wu looked at Gu Nanqiu.
He then looked at the slightly annoyed Wu Zhen.
What exactly was the situation between this “good friend” that Gu Nanqiu always mentioned and Gu Nanqiu herself?
Their relationship seemed more than just casual.
But the good friend looked completely straight (in the ‘straight woman’ sense), which was interesting. Maybe his cousin could even persuade the friend to let him date her for fun.
Holding the thought of getting some benefit for himself, He Wu spoke more enthusiastically.
When they were almost done eating, Gu Nanqiu took her phone and stood up, saying she needed to take a call.
Yue Yiyue shifted her body: “Bring me a watermelon juice.”
“I have some here; just drink mine.” Gu Nanqiu dropped the sentence and walked out.
After that, the atmosphere at the table became somewhat silent.
“Your name is Yue Yiyue, right? Gu Nanqiu often mentions you,” the most talkative person, He Wu, handed Yue Yiyue a chive skewer: “I saw you looking like you wanted this just now. It’s fresh and warm.”
“Thank you.” Surrounded by strangers, Yue Yiyue’s social anxiety flared up. She politely took it, placed it aside, and lowered her head to continue eating.
“Then, is it okay to ask what your relationship with Gu Nanqiu is?” He Wu looked judgmental, and his words were not particularly polite.
“We’re a little curious about Gu Nanqiu’s relationship status.”
“Wu Zhen wants to pursue Gu Nanqiu. As her best friend, you should be able to give us some advice, right? Like what Gu Nanqiu likes to eat or where she likes to go out.”
“Of course, once our Boss Wu succeeds, she’ll definitely buy you delicious food and drinks. After all, you’re her future girlfriend’s best friend.”
The words were both greasy and had an indescribable, pungent smell.
Yue Yiyue looked up at He Wu, just as Wu Zhen angrily scolded He Wu to shut up.
Although Yue Yiyue had never pursued anyone, every book she read indicated that trying to establish a relationship with a person’s friend to pursue them was an unwise decision.
Unless the friend brings it up first.
But generally, getting involved in a romantic pursuit often leads to bad outcomes.
At this, Yue Yiyue felt the chive skewer on her plate was completely tasteless.
She put her chopsticks aside.
He Wu saw Yue Yiyue’s face fall. He frowned. What does this Yue Yiyue mean? Who is she giving attitude to?
He thought she felt the benefit wasn’t enough, and he was about to speak, but Wu Zhen scolded him into silence again.
Afterward, Wu Zhen looked apologetically at Yue Yiyue: “He’s my cousin. He’s young and clueless. I’m sorry. My liking Nanqiu is my own business. I won’t make things difficult for you. I’m sorry.”
Yue Yiyue looked up again, carefully looking at Wu Zhen, and then at the watermelon juice next to her.
“It’s fine. As for Nanqiu’s business, it’s not convenient for me, as her friend, to disclose anything. Alright, we’ve finished eating, let’s go.”
With that said, Yue Yiyue picked up the bag of fruit next to her: “Boss, check, please. Separate bills.”
After walking out, she saw Gu Nanqiu outside, talking on the phone. Yue Yiyue tossed a mint candy over to her.
Gu Nanqiu caught it, hung up the phone, and looked curiously at Yue Yiyue, wondering why she was out so quickly: “What? Aren’t you eating anymore?”
“It’s too off-putting. That He Wu. I don’t want that watermelon juice either. And that Wu Zhen, she’s also strange. Stay away from both of them.” Yue Yiyue tsked: “I won’t tell you the details to spare your ears. Tell me honestly, do they constantly hover around you in class and bother you?”
Gu Nanqiu glanced inside and saw Wu Zhen following them out. She looked away: “No, not really. Today was the first time we talked. I just remembered their names when they introduced themselves.”
She put her arm around Yue Yiyue: “Then let’s go to your favorite shop. You probably only ate half a meal. Let’s buy some snacks, pair them with these fruits, and watch a movie?”
“Sounds good.”
The two walked along, picking out snacks, calling it “resupplying.”
Finally, Gu Nanqiu was carrying a large bag of snacks and yogurt, and Yue Yiyue was hugging milk tea and fruit as they walked home.
They both tacitly avoided the cake shop.
Neither of them had the desire to eat that particular item for a while.
Arriving at the door, Yue Yiyue was about to step forward to unlock it when she noticed an extra delivery box. On top of the delivery box sat a transparent plastic container holding an exquisite cake—a large pink heart with the word “LOVE” written prominently.
It also had the words “For Gu Nanqiu” written in red.
Gu Nanqiu’s first reaction was to kick the thing away, sending it far down the hallway.
The two exchanged glances.
“That server is crazy. She must be the mastermind.” Yue Yiyue looked at the box kicked to the other side of the corridor. She was vigilant for any strange red liquid to seep out. She quickly opened the door and ushered Gu Nanqiu into the house.
Their home was absolutely safe.
“I’ll call the property management to check the surveillance footage later and submit it as evidence to the police.”
“What was inside… Seriously, she’s crazy!”
Remembering what the police had dismantled inside earlier that afternoon, Gu Nanqiu felt nauseous.
“Yiyue, if you knew that box contained a disgusting love letter and a heart, you’d also think I was cursed to be targeted by a pervert.”
