My Senior Sister Says She Will Marry No One But Me - Chapter 30.2
Yet, Xue Shuyan’s reasoning was so logical that the Emei disciple found herself at a loss for words. All she could do was watch as the two walked away side by side, thinking to herself that she had likely been added to Xue Shuyan’s “no close contact with the sect leader” list. Every glimpse of Du Yunge felt like a rare treasure after all, she was renowned as the number one beauty in the Central Plains martial world, her fame spreading even beyond the borders. Even from behind, her graceful, ethereal figure resembled a celestial being who had strayed into the mortal realm.
Just as the Emei disciple was sorrowfully thinking, “Once they leave, I may never see such a beauty again,” Du Yunge suddenly halted.
However, Du Yunge’s pause had nothing to do with sensing the gaze from behind her martial skills were not refined enough to be that perceptive. She had stopped simply because she noticed a figure standing by the side gate of the Emei Sect.
Since its founding, the Miaoyin Sect had consisted entirely of women, from the sect leader down to the outer disciples and even the maids some of whom lacked the innate talent for martial arts or had voluntarily chosen not to pursue it. Men were not only barred from joining the sect but were also required to submit a formal request for permission to ascend the mountain, which had to be approved by the Miaoyin Sect leader. Even then, they were forbidden from crossing the first mountain gate, regardless of how urgent the matter might be.
Although the Emei Sect hadn’t quite reached such an extreme, its members were predominantly women. The few men within were either servants tasked with sweeping and other menial chores or abandoned male infants found at the foot of the mountain. Those with promising potential were taken in as outer sect disciples this alone spoke volumes about the harshness of the current era. Centuries ago, only baby girls were uniformly abandoned, but now even “heirs capable of continuing the family line” were cast aside like worn-out shoes. If an outsider wished to visit the Emei Sect, unless they were a figure of the stature of the Wudang Sect Leader, whether they were renowned martial heroes, imperial envoys, or wealthy magnates, all were required to enter through the side gate.
Du Yunge had recently been studying extensively under Feng Chengchun and had naturally learned a thing or two about the Emei Sect’s longstanding rules. Seeing the man standing obediently at the side gate, not daring to take a single step further, she felt a twinge of pity for him. She pointed with her slender finger and asked curiously, “Who is that?”
Without even needing to look, the Emei disciple knew exactly whom Du Yunge was referring to. Coincidentally, this man had a faint, albeit convoluted, connection to Du Yunge. “He is the founding disciple of the Wudang Sect.”
More disciples nearby gradually recognized the figure and couldn’t help but complain, “What bad luck! Why is this guy still lingering around like a haunting ghost?”
“It’s not like we didn’t offer him a place to rest. There’s the Qingyin Pavilion halfway up the mountain, it’s perfectly adequate for sheltering from wind, rain, or sun. What’s he doing standing there so pitifully? Who is he trying to fool?”
“Heavens, it’s a good thing we’re not entangled with someone like this! Sect Leader Du really has had a stroke of bad luck.”
The most talkative disciple, who had spoken first, looked as if she wanted to spit on the ground in disgust, but for the sake of maintaining her image in front of a beauty like Du Yunge, she restrained herself. Instead, she unleashed a torrent of words:
“Sect Leader Du, you’re beautiful and kind-hearted, but you mustn’t be deceived by someone who appears deeply devoted but is actually more twisted than an eighteen-bend mountain path! If he truly loved you, he would have told you himself. At the very least, he should have come to propose marriage on his own even if rejected, he would have tried. If he didn’t want to put you in an awkward position or feared rejection, he should have kept his feelings hidden so well that no one could detect them. How could he claim to love you while simultaneously putting you in such a difficult situation?”
“Besides, it’s not like the Emei Sect forbids men from entering. If he were truly sincere and determined to confess his feelings to you, he should have submitted a formal visiting card and entered through the side gate properly to tell you. If you reciprocated, it would be a joyous outcome; if not, he should have let go and moved on. That’s how a real man should act!”
Though this Emei disciple was rather long-winded, every word she spoke was reasonable. The others around chimed in agreement:
“Exactly! If he doesn’t even have the courage to confess his feelings himself and has to trouble our sect leader, how can he call himself a young hero?”
“In my opinion, he just wants you to see how pitiful he is so you’ll take pity on him. Senior Sister Xue, you must keep a close watch and make sure our sect leader isn’t tricked by such a scheming character!”
Du Yunge finally realized belatedly that the person mentioned in the letter from the Emei Sect leader, who had previously attempted to arrange a match, was likely this very individual. Just then, Xue Shuyan finally spoke:
“I must take good care of our sect leader.”
Before coming to Mount Wangyou, Xue Shuyan was of mixed Hu descent. The force of habit is powerful much like Xia Yecheng, who had spoken the Sichuan dialect for over a decade since birth. Even after being brought back by the former Miaoyin Sect leader and switching to Mandarin, her tongue could never quite straighten out the accents. Xue Shuyan was no exception.
No matter what she said, there was an inexplicable, resolute force in her tone, making her seem more like a true sect leader than Du Yunge herself her words carrying the weight of authority, as unchangeable as dyeing white cloth black. It was almost a shame, given her elegant Han name derived from the line: “Who in the clouds sends a brocade letter? When the wild geese return, the moon fills the western tower.”
Since Xue Shuyan had spoken so decisively, Du Yunge saw no need to be polite with this person and reminded the Emei disciples:
“But having such a large person blocking the entrance to the back mountain is truly unsightly. I have no interest in marriage. Could you please inform your sect leader?”
After all, this was Mount Emei, not Mount Wangyou. No matter how much Du Yunge wished to avoid this person, it wouldn’t be appropriate to overstep her authority on Emei Sect’s territory.
Of course, if this were Mount Wangyou, not to mention that the mountain was currently sealed off, whether this lovesick Wudang disciple could even make it up the mountain alive would be another matter entirely. If Du Yunge had ever explicitly refused to see someone or expressed dislike for something, once Xue Shuyan knew, that person or thing would never have a second chance to appear before Du Yunge again.
As the Emei disciple had inwardly grumbled, if Feng Chengchun were compared to a protective mother hen, then Xue Shuyan was more like a lone wolf guarding its prey on the grasslands. Trying to snatch a chick from under a mother hen’s wings might result in a few pecks at most, but attempting to steal food from a lone wolf’s claws.
That would be no different from seeking death.
