- Chapter 2.5 - Rumors at the Academy— “Staring Eyes”
The moment we passed through the gates, the academy grounds were buzzing. Even here, where noble and commoner students mix, it seems the “punishment drama” between First Prince Alexis and the Duke’s daughter, Serena, spread quickly.
The two of them already draw attention, but this morning, they arrived at school in the same carriage. It was perfect fuel for the rumors.
“Look at that! After what happened yesterday, why are they together?” “Wasn’t Lady Serena’s engagement supposed to be broken?” “No way, did they make up? That’s impossible!”
I can feel those whispers flying around everywhere. Every time we walk down the path to the school building, the crowd ripples with noise. It feels like we are part of a show.
Alexis looks straight ahead with a serious face and walks with dignity. I don’t know if it’s his royal pride or if he is trying not to let his decision from last night waver. Walking beside him, I have no choice but to fix my posture while hiding how fast my heart is beating.
Then, I see a familiar figure waiting past the main gate. —It is Lily Etoile.
As a student from a commoner background, she is rare because she wears a white lace cape over her school uniform. With her light blonde hair, large eyes, and slender body, her teary appearance is exactly the “heroine everyone wants to protect.”
However, I don’t think I am imagining the hint of hostility mixed in her eyes right now.
“Prince Alexis…!”
Lily walks straight up to him. With tears still in her eyes, she forces the words out.
“What was that commotion yesterday…? Are you going to just forget everything Lady Serena has done to me?”
I can tell the people around us are holding their breath. Lily is known for being “fragile like a small animal but strong at heart,” a character type that is especially popular with men. Her current attitude, which looks like she is interrogating Alexis, is unusually aggressive for her.
Most of all, her words clearly claim that “Serena is the bad one.” It feels like she is throwing a direct warning shot at me.
Alexis stares quietly at Lily. “…Nothing is settled yet. Besides, I want to check again if everything Serena supposedly did is actually true,” he says in a low voice.
There is even a sense of pressure in his voice. Lily’s face twitches, and the people begin to whisper again.
“Was Lady Serena’s bullying actually exaggerated?”
“But Miss Lily was crying so hard last night.”
While that confusion swirls around us, I stand silently next to Alexis. I see a flash of panic in the way Lily glares at me.
Could it be that Lily is surprised that the punishment, which was supposed to happen at the ballroom, was stopped by the Prince’s will?
“…In the first place, what exactly am I being accused of doing to you?”
I tried speaking up as a test. Of course, the original Serena might have actually bullied Lily. But since I just reincarnated, I have no memories, so honestly, I don’t know anything.
However, my question makes Lily’s expression stiffen.
“H-How… have you forgotten what you did? You put mud on my desk, and in the classroom—”
Lily tries to complain with a crying voice, but Alexis cuts her off. “Did Serena really do that?”
“In the Royal Academy, it is impossible to do such obvious bullying without anyone noticing. Besides, Serena is a top student. People may have looked at her coldly, but would she really act so openly that she would get such a bad reputation? …I have doubts about that.”
I was just as surprised as Lily by this turn of events. I didn’t even know that I was a top student or that people looked at me coldly.
It seems the Prince didn’t just believe everything Lily said about “Serena’s crimes” from the start. In fact, it sounds like he suspects something.
“But Lady Serena, it is a fact that she looked down on me. Using the fact that she is a noble—”
Lily speaks desperately. But the Prince is not moved by her words; instead, he gives her a calm look.
The surrounding students hold their breath and watch the exchange between me, the Prince, and Lily. I don’t know the details yet, but it seems people are starting to doubt “Lily’s one-sided claims.”
I whisper in my heart. —It looks like things are heading in a completely different direction from the Prince’s route in the game.
Even though Lily isn’t being backed into a corner yet, she seems to be losing her composure. Will this strange feeling lead to big trouble later?
