My Possessive Boss Is Unexpectedly Needy - Chapter 44
Chapter 44
Yu Zining stood as a shield in front of Lu Yeyan, looking back at him with reddened eyes that tugged at one’s heartstrings.
“Are you crying?”
A flash of sorrow appeared in Lu Yeyan’s eyes. He reached out, wanting to touch Yu Zining’s cheek.
But in the next second, Yu Zining caught his hand and shook it off violently.
Lu Yeyan’s brow tightened. “A-Ning, this plan of yours is a terrible one. Come back. You know I won’t let you take this risk.”
Yu Zining didn’t look at him. With lowered eyes, he gestured: I’ve already made myself clear. Don’t you understand yet?
Lu Yeyan’s eyes darkened. “Stop this nonsense and come home with me!”
The moment Lu Yeyan reached out to grab him, Yu Zining retreated to He Yilun’s side.
He actually gestured toward Lu Yeyan: I’ll tell you the truth. You guessed right before—I was sent here by President He.
Lu Yeyan was instantly livid at the “stupid” meaning behind the gestures.
“Do you really think I’ll believe that? Fine, you say he sent you, but we’ve been through so much. Were the things you said to me that day lies too? I don’t want to decipher these stupid gestures anymore. Not unless you say it to me yourself.”
Growing anxious, Yu Zining signaled: I told you, I will never speak to you again!
Standing to the side, He Yilun let out a chuckle. “Pfft. My goodness, Lu Yeyan, why bother? Since everything is out in the open, I might as well tell you—he’s always been my man. Otherwise, how else would you have been so easily charmed by him?”
With that, He Yilun grabbed Yu Zining’s hand. Yu Zining was startled and instinctively wanted to pull away.
But He Yilun leaned in and whispered in his ear, “If you want him to believe it, you have to be heartless. I’m helping you.”
Yu Zining’s heart skipped a beat. Across from them, Lu Yeyan was visibly trembling with rage.
“He Yilun, you wouldn’t dare!”
Yu Zining didn’t speak again. He let go of He Yilun’s hand and turned to get into He Yilun’s car.
He Yilun gave a mocking laugh. “See that, Lu Yeyan? Don’t go looking for trouble where you aren’t wanted.”
With a smug glance at Lu Yeyan, he got into the car.
As he watched the vehicle drive away, a sense of desolation washed over Lu Yeyan. His eyes actually grew moist.
Since the tragedy of the Lu Group years ago, Lu Yeyan had never cried. But in this moment, he felt the crushing loneliness of a penniless wanderer.
…
He Yilun didn’t take Yu Zining back to the family estate but instead to a private villa he owned.
Looking at the villa, Yu Zining gestured: I won’t trouble you further. I’ll be going now.
“Hey, wait!” He Yilun pulled him back.
“Where are you going? I’m telling you, the moment you step out that door, you’ll be surrounded by Lu Yeyan’s people. Just stay here. This is my private villa; no one will disturb you.”
Left with no other choice, Yu Zining nodded.
As He Yilun led him inside, he asked, “Why can’t you speak?”
Yu Zining didn’t know how to explain, so he simply shook his head.
“It’s fine. I’ve called a private doctor. He’s quite famous in Country K; he’ll know what’s wrong.”
Yu Zining didn’t want to impose on He Yilun. Furthermore, knowing what the Ou family had done to the Lu family made him stay on high alert.
Meanwhile, after returning to the company, Lu Yeyan dispatched a large number of men to protect Yu Zining. He refused to believe Yu Zining would be safe with He Yilun.
…
Li Yiyang rushed over, only to be blocked at the door by Li Ruixi.
“Sis, how is he?”
Li Ruixi shook her head. “What Yu Zining did was too cold-blooded. I never expected him to be so heartless.”
Li Yiyang didn’t agree. “Why do I feel like that’s not what he was thinking at all?”
“What are you talking about? He explained it clearly in front of the reporters, didn’t he? What is wrong with you, kid!”
Before Li Yiyang could even finish a sentence, Li Ruixi snapped at him several times. Looking at his sister, who was losing her temper for no apparent reason, Li Yiyang chose to shut up.
As he turned to leave, he muttered under his breath, “I didn’t even say anything, why the temper…”
“What was that?”
“Ah! Nothing! Since Lu Yeyan is fine, I’m leaving!” With that, Li Yiyang made a quick escape. Facing a Li Ruixi who was like a ticking time bomb today, he figured it was best to stay away.
…
He Yilun’s private doctor arrived quickly.
The doctor shone a light down Yu Zining’s throat and performed various tests with strips and various measuring devices. Finally, he let out a heavy sigh, sending a jolt of fear through Yu Zining.
“Well?” He Yilun asked, seeing the doctor’s grim expression.
The doctor glanced at Yu Zining and said, “It’s a new type of drug—one I haven’t seen before. This chemical has already damaged his vocal cords. The probability of him being able to speak again is very low.”
He Yilun’s face turned pale. “Is there no way at all?”
Seeing He Yilun’s urgency, the doctor added quickly, “It’s not that there’s no way, but I don’t know the formula. Researching a new drug like this is tricky. The best chance is to find out where the drug was sold and find the doctor who made it. Only then will he have a chance at recovery.”
He Yilun stood up from the sofa and looked at Yu Zining. “Do you have any clues?”
Yu Zining shook his head.
“Mr. He, I haven’t seen this drug locally. It likely came from abroad.”
Without a second thought, He Yilun pulled Yu Zining up. “I’ll take you abroad. We’ll search country by country; we’ll find it eventually.”
Yu Zining shook his head. He was grateful for He Yilun’s kindness, but he didn’t want to go through such a struggle.
“Don’t you want to be able to talk?”
Yu Zining gave a helpless smile and gestured: It doesn’t matter. I’ve lived just fine without speaking for many years. I don’t want to trouble you.
“You think you’re a trouble to me?”
Yu Zining nodded.
“Mr. Yu,” the doctor interjected helplessly, “as a physician, I must warn you: the longer you wait, the harder it will be to treat.”
He Yilun ran a hand through his hair and waved the doctor away. “You may go.” The doctor bowed slightly, picked up his medical bag, and left.
He Yilun sat back down next to Yu Zining. “You know exactly who did this to you, don’t you?”
Yu Zining remained still.
“Let me guess… another one of Lu Yeyan’s obsessed admirers? Hmph, it’s ridiculous how that stoic face of his attracts so much trouble.”
Yu Zining still offered no reaction.
“I know what you’re thinking. Since Lu Yeyan and I are rivals, you’re wary of me. But don’t forget—you and Lu Yeyan are over now.”
Only then did Yu Zining look up at He Yilun.
