- Episode 59 - I Wanted to See You (Part 2)
“Did you come from the future?”
“Yes, well… I know it’s hard to believe, but in the future, I serve as Lord Varick’s assistant.”
Otilie sat beside the young Varick and explained the circumstances that had brought her here.
Though he was not yet even ten years old, Varick was unmistakably Varick. He had persuaded his knight guard with a “It’s alright,” and had them wait at a distance. Quick-witted and rational, she didn’t feel at all like she was speaking with someone younger.
After she finished explaining everything, Varick said, “I see.”
“I believe you.”
“Lord Varick…”
His gentle smile made her want to cling to him. Otilie felt her eyes grow hot. No matter how desperate the situation, if Varick was there, she felt reassured that everything would be alright.
[Still, to think there’s someone with the ability to send others into the past. That’s an incredible ability. Completely different from mine.]
She could hear Varick’s inner voice. Otilie widened her eyes slightly and peered at Varick’s face.
‘When I was young, I didn’t like my own ability.’
Suddenly, Otilie remembered what Varick had said the night they first met.
‘Because my ability isn’t something I can do anything with on my own, right? My mother has the ability to see the future and protects the country splendidly, but I can’t do anything without someone else’s ability. I was frustrated, bitter, and sulky for a very long time.’
Probably, this Varick was still in the phase where he simply envied others’ abilities. Without realizing how wonderful his own ability truly was…
(That’s it!)
“U-um! There’s something I’d like to ask of you, Lord Varick.”
“What is it?”
Otilie pulled herself together and turned to face Varick. With a smile that betrayed none of his inner thoughts, Varick responded to her.
“Could you please transfer your ability to me? I think that would surely allow me to return to the present!”
“Mine?”
Upon hearing Otilie’s words, Varick’s eyes widened in surprise. But soon after, a somewhat sad expression appeared on his face.
“I’m sorry, but I don’t think I have that kind of power.”
Hearing the normally forward-thinking Varick speak so negatively made Otilie’s chest ache.
“No, you can. If it’s you, Lord Varick, you absolutely can! Because I know your ability is more wonderful than anyone else’s!”
Otilie took Varick’s hands. Varick slowly looked up at her.
“Wonderful? My ability?”
“Yes, that’s right! Because I’ve been saved by your ability many times!”
Preventing her from hearing Iama’s inner voice, canceling out charm abilities. If she started counting, there would be no end.
It was probably forbidden to tell him everything that would happen in the future. But without Varick’s ability, without him, Otilie would undoubtedly not be alive.
“And it’s not just me. From now on, many people will be saved by you, Lord Varick, and the wonderful people you gather. Abilities depend on how you train them. Your ability truly holds infinite potential.”
Once, Varick had given Otilie those same words. He had given hope to Otilie, who couldn’t learn to like her own ability.
So now it was Otilie’s turn.
She prayed that her words would reach him.
“…So, what should I do?”
After a while, Varick murmured those words. Otilie’s eyes sparkled as she gently squeezed his hands. He widened his eyes slightly, then looked down quickly as if embarrassed.
“Please become aware of the energy flowing within your body. Gather it in your palms.”
Otilie instructed him just as Varick had once taught her. The young Varick said, “Like this?” as he focused strength into his hands.
Then, Otilie’s entire body grew slightly warm. Next, she felt the same floating sensation as when she had been sent to the past.
“It worked!” Otilie exclaimed. Varick blinked. “It really succeeded?”
“Lord Varick, thank you! Truly, I don’t know how to thank you enough!”
Now she could return to the present, to Varick. Otilie hugged the young Varick tightly, tears streaming down her face.
“Hey… We’ll meet again in the future, right?”
Varick asked. Otilie lifted her face and looked straight at him.
“Yes, of course. I’ll come to see you.”
“Really? You’ll definitely come to see me?”
“Yes, definitely.”
She entwined her pinky finger with the one he offered and smiled gently.
“—Then I’ll do my best. I’ll try to properly face my own ability so I can become a man you can be proud of someday.”
“Lord Varick…”
Varick’s smile was so precious it made her want to cry. With a single blink, when she opened her eyes, the grown-up Varick was standing before her.
“Lord Varick.”
“…I believed that if I waited here, Otilie would return.”
Saying this, Varick hugged Otilie tightly. Smiling, Otilie hugged him back.
“I missed you.”
Varick whispered. Otilie immediately understood that those words contained not just the time she had been sent to the past—but years of longing.
“I’m sorry I’m late.”
“…Yeah. Truly, I think I was waiting only for you, Otilie. All this time, all along.”
Varick recalled the conversation he’d had with his assistants about his first love. At that time, he had remembered meeting Otilie in his childhood—remembered his own first love.
“Then, may I have all of your future from now on, too?”
The past, the present, and the future—she wanted all of Varick.
How greedy would she have to be to feel satisfied? …Even as she thought that, there was nothing to be done about how much she loved Varick. Otilie could no longer lie to herself about her feelings.
“Of course. Everything of mine belongs only to you, Otilie.”
Varick smiled strongly.
The two gazed at each other, and as if by mutual agreement, they kissed and held each other tightly.
