- Chapter 41 - Shredded Pork with Garlic Sauce
“Oh my god!” He Wenyu’s face went pale with shock, her lips trembling. “After all this time, you’re the one on the bottom?!”
But Lin Sanyuan was supposed to be a fierce top!
How did this happen? Suddenly, she felt even more sorry for her.
He Wenyu’s hand flew back from Sanyuan’s shoulder as she retreated several meters to establish a safe distance. Their dynamic was getting a bit dangerous, and she had to hold the line. Otherwise, the He family siblings would be absolute scumbags, her brother cheated on his best friend, and now she was about to move in on her brother’s girlfriend.
Crap, the He family social circle is a total mess.
He Wenyu quickly snuffed out those dramatic fantasies. She stole another glance at Tang Hengzhi and shivered violently. For a moment, she couldn’t tell who was more dangerous in a room alone together, Tang Hengzhi or herself.
Her mood was complicated. “I guess that saying is true, right? Without an older partner to spoil you, how could a younger one go wild?”
“It’s not like that.” Tang Hengzhi didn’t actually want to discuss such private matters with He Wenyu, but her mind was in disarray today. “She’s afraid of pain.”
He Wenyu stood there speechless. “She’s afraid of pain, so you’re willing to be the submissive one for the sake of love?!”
This was Tang Hengzhi they were talking about!
He Wenyu had been bombarded with way too much information for one morning. She walked out of the room in a daze and headed downstairs to buy breakfast.
After bringing a portion back for Qiao Lian, Lin Sanyuan had finished her nap. She was at a small street stall not far from the hotel buying bean curd skins.
He Wenyu noticed that Sanyuan’s phone had died when she went to pay, making a mobile transaction impossible. Immediately after, Sanyuan pulled a plain, unassuming cloth pouch from her pocket, the kind with a drawstring closure. At first glance, it looked like the little bags Buddhist nuns used for alms at temples, decorated with an old-fashioned embroidered lotus that radiated a “peaceful as water” vibe.
As Lin Sanyuan adjusted her glasses and slowly counted out coins from the bag, He Wenyu realized with a jolt that this was actually her wallet. She was floored by the absurdity of it.
In this day and age, was there really a young person still using a “grandma-style” wallet? Even a ten-yuan wallet from Pinduoduo would look better than that.
He Wenyu found it unbelievable. This weird little thing with zero aesthetic sense was the person who had “conquered” Tang Hengzhi? And without any strings attached?
Holy crap! Either she was losing it, or the world had gone mad.
…
In addition to the ski resort, Mount Jiuque also featured a holiday village. The mild weather was perfect for fishing. Han Chun had booked a section of the lake at the resort and invited everyone to join in.
Lin Sanyuan remembered that this wasn’t part of the original plan. Clearly, it was a last-minute idea from Han Chun. As for who his target was, anyone with eyes could see it.
While everyone was fishing, Han Chun made a point of inviting Lin Sanyuan to the tea room for a drink. Sanyuan knew exactly why he was doing this. An industry elite who handled social matters so perfectly would never state his intentions directly. That would be too vulgar. He needed to start a conversation, beat around the bush, and then seamlessly steer the topic toward his goal.
Sure enough, Han Chun put on a show of being concerned about her romantic life, asking her what she thought of a guy named Cao Shen.
Lin Sanyuan knew of him. His family owned a car dealership, making him a wealthy second-generation heir, and he had once pursued Yang Jiayan. Back then, Yang Jiayan was young and ambitious, she didn’t like his lack of a proper career and turned him down.
By the looks of it, Han Chun actually wanted to set her up with him. How bizarre. If her mother knew about an opportunity like this, she’d probably be so thrilled she’d try to arrange the wedding on the spot.
Lin Sanyuan looked at the Longjing tea he had brewed but didn’t drink it. Normally, in a situation like this, she would use the same tactics she employed during blind dates to deflect. But for some reason, she felt irritable now and didn’t want to waste a single word on nonsense.
She didn’t comment on Cao Shen, nor did she bring up He Ye to claim she already had a boyfriend. Instead, she looked Han Chun directly in the eyes with a gloomy, steady stare. Her dark eyes gazed at him so intently that he began to find it unnerving. Only then did she speak.
“Teacher Tang is seeing someone.”
The non-sequitur left Han Chun stunned. “Huh?”
Lin Sanyuan took a deep breath. “Teacher Tang has a partner she’s been with for three years. She just doesn’t intend to make it public. Mr. Han, could you help keep that a secret?”
Lin Sanyuan was someone who was essentially half-disconnected from society, so she rarely participated in formal occasions or addressed people as “Mr.” or “Ms.” But right now, her expression was serious and formal.
Han Chun’s mouth hung open. He was completely thrown off by her directness, and the speech he had prepared died in his throat. He let out a couple of awkward laughs and tried to do damage control. “You’ve misunderstood. I simply admire Teacher Tang from a male perspective. Besides, I didn’t know she was already taken.”
“Mr. Han knows now.”
Lin Sanyuan left the tea room without taking a single sip of tea. She wasn’t in the mood for fishing anymore. She was starting to feel sleepy again.
He Wenyu saw Sanyuan yawning from a distance and ran over to grab her arm. “What did that Han guy want with you? Why did he call you over for tea alone?”
Ever since she found out Lin Sanyuan was the “fierce top” who had conquered Tang Hengzhi, He Wenyu couldn’t bring herself to call her “Little Sanyuan” anymore. The way she held her arm and looked at her was filled with admiration and a sort of “damsel in distress” vibe. Since their preferences aligned, she didn’t feel the need to avoid physical closeness.
Lin Sanyuan was startled by her behavior. “Sister Wenyu?”
“Oh, don’t call me Sister Wenyu. You’re the ‘sister’ here. You’re my idol! Just be a bit more casual and call me He Wenyu.”
“Huh?” Did she eat tainted seafood and have another episode?
“Don’t ‘huh’ me. What did that guy want? I have a feeling it wasn’t anything good.”
Lin Sanyuan told the truth. “It was nothing. He just wanted me to go on a blind date with his cousin, who’s also here with us today.”
At the mention of blind dates, He Wenyu instinctively looked over at the poor guy fishing alone under a sun umbrella. Why was it that no matter where Lin Sanyuan went, someone always wanted to shove a man at her for a blind date? What kind of “blind date magnet” constitution did she have?
“You… you didn’t agree, right?” He Wenyu asked nervously.
“Agree to what?” Lin Sanyuan found it a bit funny. “I have a boyfriend. Your brother.”
He Wenyu froze and scratched her head, only then remembering that Lin Sanyuan was technically her brother’s girlfriend. Tsk, things were getting complicated.
Lin Sanyuan had no interest in fishing. She seemed to be pretty bad at any sport that felt like a game. She couldn’t even figure out how to bait a hook, and she didn’t want to bother anyone else. So, she decided to find Qiao Lian, the resident shut-in who seemed just as useless at sports as she was, and go pick oranges to eat.
However, as she looked over, she saw Qiao Lian sitting under a sun umbrella not far from Tang Hengzhi. She was expertly prepping the bait, threading worms onto the hook, and casting the line with a sharp, silver arc. The bobber hit the water and quickly popped back up.
Qiao Lian was leaning back in a folding chair, holding a fishing rod. Her slender legs were encased in high-top riding boots, which made the lines of her calves look exceptionally elegant. Not long after her line hit the water, the bobber twitched. Qiao Lian lazily lifted an eyelid, her arm tensed, and she leaned back in a graceful curve as she pulled the rod. A carp broke the surface, hook firmly in its mouth.
Lin Sanyuan: “…”
Damn, she looks so cool! Are students today all this multi-talented? As a woman in her twenties, she felt unworthy of asking her to go pick oranges.
Noticing Sanyuan’s envious gaze, Qiao Lian waved her over. “Come here.”
The fishing had only just begun, yet Qiao Lian was the first among the group to get a bite. The boys were all quite surprised. Lin Sanyuan trotted over eagerly to help her with the basket.
Qiao Lian had a smug look on her face. “Do I look cool?”
Lin Sanyuan didn’t hold back her praise. “Qiao Lianlian, you look incredibly cool!”
Qiao Lian unhooked the carp and tossed it into the basket Sanyuan was holding. She said with a smile, “The fish we catch here can be taken to the farmhouse to be cooked for lunch.”
Lin Sanyuan didn’t actually like fish very much, she found them too fishy. But she wanted to show support for Qiao Lian. “Then I want to eat fish head with chopped chili.”
“Fish head with chopped chili, huh? A carp won’t really work for that, we need to catch a bighead carp,” Qiao Lian said.
“What kind of fish is that?”
Qiao Lian pulled a milk candy from her pocket and handed it to her. “It’s a ‘fat-head’ fish. Can you peel one for me?”
“Of course I can.” Qiao Lian was the star of the show right now. She was the “pro,” and she deserved the pro treatment.
Lin Sanyuan diligently peeled the candy for her. She knew how to coax a well-behaved kid. She asked curiously, “Can you actually catch a bighead carp?”
Qiao Lian bit down on the milky white candy, her eyes brimming with laughter. “I definitely can.”
Holy crap?
He Wenyu, whose “gay-dar” was going haywire, leaned in toward Tang Hengzhi and whispered frantically in her ear. “Something’s wrong! The way that girl looks at her is not right. She definitely has feelings for Sanyuan.”
That look was way too obvious. The intentions of the younger generation were wild.
Tang Hengzhi sat in her folding chair without moving an inch. she glanced at her sideways. “You’re only just noticing?”
Wait, what? You noticed something was wrong ages ago?!
He Wenyu was shocked. “How can you be so calm?! I heard the two of them are living together right now!”
Tang Hengzhi considered this seriously. “It shouldn’t be a big problem. Qiao Lian is over eighteen, so it’s not exactly kidnapping a minor.”
“Is that the point?! You blockhead! She’s eighteen, and an eighteen-year-old knows way more tricks than you do. Haven’t you noticed she always likes Sanyuan to feed her? And she never uses her hands. I felt something was off yesterday in the car. Sanyuan handed her an orange, and even though there was plenty of distance, she insisted on leaning over to grab it with her mouth. Combined with that hairstyle, my god, it’s too much!”
Tang Hengzhi didn’t follow. “Hairstyle?”
“Haven’t you noticed the kid is trying hard to cultivate a ‘puppy-dog girlfriend’ persona? I remember Sanyuan likes cats and dogs, right? Damn! She’s ambitious. She’s putting way more thought into this than you are, you blockhead!”
Tang Hengzhi frowned. Lin Sanyuan did indeed like dogs. She couldn’t help but glance at Qiao Lian, who looked like a golden retriever pup pretending to be cute. She frowned further. “I wouldn’t look good with that kind of perm.”
He Wenyu took a deep breath, her face twisting. “I really don’t understand how someone like you found a girlfriend. Can’t you just act jealous like a normal person? You make it look like you don’t care at all.”
Tang Hengzhi smiled but said nothing.
He Wenyu wanted to continue her lecture, but out of the corner of her eye, she saw that the fishing rod in Tang Hengzhi’s hand was constantly twitching. The bobber had sunk underwater and was being pulled all over the place.
But Tang Hengzhi didn’t react. She seemed completely unaware that a fish was on the hook. She remained oblivious even after the fish spat out the bait and escaped.
He Wenyu let out a silent “oh” in her heart.
This woman… was! incredibly! jealous!
Qiao Lian was truly impressive. Sure enough, the lunch menu included fish head with chopped chili. Lin Sanyuan, who didn’t usually like fish, was supportive enough to eat half of it.
Tang Hengzhi, who was dining with them, didn’t touch a single piece of fish that afternoon. She didn’t even touch the shredded pork with garlic sauce.
