My Husband is Suspicious - Episode 22
Dreid was mostly on the listening end. The other party was fidgeting as if Dreid had something on them.
Eleanor checked the tracker. The numbers had changed slightly. It seemed he had briefly left something in the room before coming down.
“Is that the person you’re tracking, Eleanor?”
Since there was no other way to deny it now, Eleanor nodded. Mackiv watched with curiosity before speaking.
“He seems like quite an important person.”
Soon, a carriage arrived, and as the person speaking opened the carriage door, Dreid got inside. The carriage vanished like an arrow.
Eleanor checked the tracker. Delfos was a relatively small area, so there was little chance of losing him within the tracker’s range.
First, what was needed now was to secure a room closest to Dreid. He would surely return here. It wouldn’t be too late to follow Dreid after securing a room.
“Aren’t you going to follow?”
Mackiv pointed towards the carriage that had just disappeared. Eleanor shook his head.
“I’ll secure a room here first. Though I don’t know if there will be any.”
Indeed, numerous people were disembarking from carriages around the hotel. There were quite a few people walking around. Moreover, it was a crowded season, so it was uncertain if rooms would be available.
Inside the hotel, there were fewer people than outside, but it was still crowded. Eleanor waited for a long time to check in before finally reaching his turn and speaking.
“Can I get a room near room 1109?”
The staff member checked something for a moment and then said in a troubled voice.
“I’m sorry, but although there is one room left, it’s reserved by someone else.”
Just then, Mackiv, who had been quiet, spoke to Eleanor.
“Eleanor, leave this to me.”
“But they said someone else already reserved it?”
Eleanor expressed his doubt. Someone else had already reserved it, and that person wouldn’t willingly give up their room. More importantly, they didn’t even know who it was.
Mackiv smiled broadly and lifted his clothes. A faint jingling sound echoed.
“Eleanor, I have quite a good track record.”
“You’re not going to sell magical artifacts here, are you?”
Mackiv smiled and said gently.
“I’m just going to do it the way I always do.”
Eleanor left Mackiv to it, half-believing, half-doubting. In any case, there was no loss for Eleanor. No matter the cost, he had to secure a room near Dreid. Only then would his trip here be worthwhile.
Mackiv checked the staff member’s name tag and spoke gently.
“Demid, may I see the reservation list?”
The staff member seemed momentarily flustered before stating firmly.
“I’m sorry, but for the protection of our guests.”
“Just one look, is that too much to ask?”
Mackiv flashed a charming smile. It was a smile that could make anyone lose their senses the moment they saw it. Eleanor had seen that smile before. He had seen it when he asked her to buy a magical artifact once.
‘He’s using that here too.’
Mackiv seemed to know very well how attractive he was. The staff member, upon seeing Mackiv’s smile, was clearly mesmerized. The staff member, who had been speaking firmly, suddenly stammered, at a loss for words.
“Uh, but this is…”
“What if, you know? The guest who reserved that room is a criminal. That’s why I want to check.”
It was an absurd statement. Eleanor shook his head. Any rational person would have refused.
However, Eleanor was quite surprised. The staff member, as if entranced by Mackiv’s smile, was already showing him the reservation list.
Mackiv naturally checked the list and thanked him with a smile. The staff member stared at Mackiv, still dazed, as before.
Eleanor felt a sense of guilt, as if he had committed a sin.
“May I borrow a phone for a moment?”
Mackiv shamelessly said to the staff member. The staff member, already captivated by Mackiv, nodded and handed him the phone. He naturally dialed the number.
Eleanor looked at Mackiv with a different kind of surprise. He seemed to maintain control in such situations, always composed. Even when what he was doing made no sense.
“Hello, did you happen to make a reservation at the Raftin Hotel? Ah, it’s just that…”
Mackiv winked at the staff member, not forgetting to do so. Then, he turned his head slightly, covering the lower part of the phone with his hand so the staff member couldn’t hear, and said.
“That room is currently under repair. So, it might be difficult to use the reserved room immediately. Instead, we have another room. Would you like to change your reservation?”
After a few exchanges, as if the other party had offered an alternative, Mackiv hung up with a broad smile and a thank you. Then, he smiled at the staff member again and said.
“They said they’d change to another room. Do you have any other rooms available?”
Fortunately, there were a few rooms left, and the process went quite smoothly.
“That will be 2,500 marks.”
The staff member said. Now, all they had to do was pay to stay in a room near Dreid. However, as Eleanor rummaged through his bag, he belatedly realized he couldn’t afford that much.
Of course, he had the blank check Dreid had given him, but he felt reluctant to use Dreid’s money for something like this.
While Eleanor hesitated, Mackiv spoke.
“Here.”
Eleanor looked at Mackiv in surprise. The staff member had already received the money from Mackiv and completed the transaction. Mackiv smiled broadly and said to Eleanor.
“Eleanor, I have quite a lot of money. You don’t need to worry too much.”
Just then, the staff member returned the change. He naturally turned to the staff member, lifting a magical artifact from his clothes.
“If you’re interested, would you like to buy a magical artifact?”
As he took the change, Mackiv offered a purplish magical artifact.
“Many ordinary people use this magical artifact as decoration. Especially when sunlight hits it, people say so.”
The staff member was still staring at Mackiv, mesmerized. Then, Mackiv smiled gently and said.
“It’s incredibly beautiful.”
“…How much is it?”
The staff member, as if he had forgotten they were in a hotel, spoke naturally. Eleanor tried to intervene to stop Mackiv.
“Mackiv, that’s enough with the magical artifacts. There are people waiting behind us.”
Mackiv glanced back and whispered to the staff member.
“I’ll come back next time.”
Although the staff member looked disappointed, Mackiv left with Eleanor. He could feel a few people glancing at Mackiv.
His appearance was certainly striking. And he knew how to use it very well. No, not just well, he was utilizing it exceptionally.
“Mackiv.”
Eleanor spoke, but Mackiv, who should have been beside him, was gone. Eleanor looked around and then stopped. He was selling a magical artifact to someone queuing at the hotel front desk. No, he had already sold it, as Mackiv’s hand held money.
‘No wonder his track record is so high.’
To be selling things even after coming this far. Just then, Mackiv seemed to spot Eleanor, waved, and approached her with a cheerful stride.
“How’s my skill?”
He looked expectant, as if seeking praise.
“It’s outstanding. Selling magical artifacts even after coming this far.”
“I couldn’t help it. I was just going to leave, but that person called me.”
Mackiv turned back again. The person who bought the magical artifact was still smiling, the afterglow of Mackiv’s face not yet faded, and waved. Mackiv waved back with a broad smile and turned around.
“It really seems like the right profession for me.”
Eleanor said sincerely. He wondered how many people there were who sold magical artifacts like Mackiv. Moreover, he doubted there was anyone else in the world with his face. Mackiv nodded in agreement.
“I enjoy this work.”
Mackiv examined the magical artifacts hanging all over his clothes. Some magical artifacts were no longer there, having already been sold. Eleanor thought to himself that he could probably sell all those magical artifacts today. It didn’t seem impossible for someone like Mackiv.
Sensing Eleanor watching his magical artifacts, he smiled and said.
“Eleanor, if you’re interested…”
At his words, Eleanor quickly snapped back to attention.
“I’ll pay you back that money.”
“What money?”
“2,500 marks.”
“Ah, you don’t have to pay it back.”
“It’s not a small amount. I’ll pay you back.”
“No, it’s fine. I wanted to come back here after a long time anyway. And I need to do my work, right? I want to help you like this.”
“Help?”
“Yes, I shouldn’t be a nuisance. Eleanor, you’re doing important work.”
Mackiv looked at Eleanor with a bright smile. Eleanor felt a strange sensation.
“But it’s quite a large sum.”
“Then, grant me one wish.”
Eleanor felt uneasy about the words but said it nonetheless.
“What is your wish?”
“I want to walk along the Delfos beach.”
“Then we can go right now. I can wait here anyway.”
“No, together.”
Mackiv said firmly. But his smile remained, making it impossible to guess what he was thinking. Eleanor spoke as if creating a shield.
“I’m married.”
“I know, but we can still walk there together. And if I walk there alone, I think I’ll feel a bit bitter.”
“But…”
“Don’t you even want to walk with me?”
Eleanor couldn’t bring himself to refuse. Mackiv’s shoulders slumped as if all his energy had drained away. Even the magical artifacts hanging all over his clothes seemed to droop. Eleanor let out a faint sigh.
They would be working together for the next three days, and if their relationship started to fray already, it would surely be awkward when he asked for help with the tracker calculations.
“I just want to walk with Eleanor, I have no other intentions.”
Mackiv said again. Eleanor chewed his lips with a troubled expression. It was just a walk on the beach. And Mackiv was acting as Eleanor’s assistant. They were already together. Objectively, there was nothing wrong with it.
