My Gorgeous Wife Relies on Her Beauty to Commit Crimes - Chapter 6
Shen Jin fixed her gaze on Xie Jing, her dark eyes unreadable.
She disliked how Xie Jing seemed to disregard her own well-being, treating these injuries as if they were nothing out of the ordinary.
Xie Jing had been smiling at first, but as Shen Jin’s expression grew stern, her voice gradually softened. She lowered her head like a child caught misbehaving and murmured, “It does hurt a little, but it’s not serious.”
“Mm.”
Shen Jin took hold of Xie Jing’s foot and placed it on her lap, unconcerned about whether her white dress would get stained. She removed Xie Jing’s sandal and examined her ankle with the same meticulous attention she would give to a billion-dollar contract. Pressing lightly with her fingers, she then had Xie Jing rotate her ankle to assess the injury. Once satisfied, Shen Jin stood up. Thinking she was about to leave, Xie Jing reached out and pitifully pinched the fabric at Shen Jin’s waist with two fingers.
Shen Jin turned her head, looking at her with the exasperated fondness one might show a child. “I’m going to call a doctor.”
Only then did Xie Jing brighten, releasing her grip and watching as Shen Jin went to the next room for her phone.
Shen Jin’s voice was muffled by the wall, but with both doors left open, snippets of the conversation could still be heard. Her tone was as composed as she was, detailing Xie Jing’s condition to the doctor over the phone and ensuring that, in case there were no suitable medicines at home, the doctor would bring enough emergency supplies.
In truth, Xie Jing’s injury was minor, just a slight sprain from missing a step on the stairs when her mind had wandered. She had caught herself in time, so there was no swelling, only a dull ache. Normally, Xie Jing wouldn’t have paid any attention to such a trivial thing; it barely even registered as pain.
But when she reached Shen Jin’s room, an idea struck her, and she knocked on the door.
She hadn’t expected Shen Jin to care. After all, Shen Jin didn’t seem particularly fond of her always frowning in her presence, never smiling. Yet, to her surprise, Shen Jin had been deeply concerned about her injured foot.
Xie Jing stared blankly at the doorway, lost in thought, until the familiar figure reappeared. Shen Jin was still wearing the white dress from the evening’s event, not yet having changed out of it. The hem was wrinkled now, marred by unsightly gray streaks where shadows crossed. She held her phone loosely in one hand and said, “The doctor will be here soon. I gave a brief explanation of your condition. She said it’s not serious, so don’t worry. With some immediate care, you’ll be able to walk by tomorrow. For today, though, take it easy and stay off your feet as much as possible.”
Xie Jing had one leg resting on the bed while the other, still in its sandal, dangled in the air. She swung it lightly and asked, “Auntie Shen, what if I want to change clothes? Will you help me?”
Just then, the strap of her dress slipped off her slender shoulder, catching precariously on her pale arm. Shen Jin paused, pressing her lips together before replying, “I’ll find someone to assist you.”
Before Xie Jing could say anything else, Shen Jin was already gone, lifting her skirt as she descended the stairs to fetch a maid.
The door clicked shut behind the maid, and Xie Jing shot a resentful glance at it.
Out in the hallway, Shen Jin sighed, rubbing the bridge of her nose.
The doctor arrived swiftly, escorted in by the housekeeper, Chen. On the way, they ran into Shen Tuo, who was idly scrolling through his phone, debating where to go for fun that night. He looked up in surprise at the sight of the doctor.
“Sister Chen, what’s going on?”
The housekeeper nodded to the doctor. “Second floor, second room on the east side.”
Once the doctor had headed upstairs, Chen turned back to Shen Tuo. “Our guest is injured.”
It took him a moment to process. His mouth fell open. “Xie Jing is hurt?”
Before Aunt Chen could nod, he quickly followed the doctor’s footsteps upstairs.
In the second-floor bedroom, Xie Jing had changed into pajamas. In truth, the housekeeper hadn’t done much for her, she was only injured in the foot, not incapacitated. The housekeeper had merely fetched her pajamas and placed slippers by the bed. Xie Jing had dressed herself.
Her makeup was still on. While changing, Xie Jing had asked the housekeeper to leave and was considering fetching the makeup remover herself when she heard a knock at the door: “Miss Xie, the doctor is here.”
“Come in,” Xie Jing replied politely.
The housekeeper ushered the doctor in. Xie Jing glanced behind them, no one else was there. Shen Jin wasn’t with them.
A trace of gloom unconsciously surfaced on her face. The female doctor sat by Xie Jing’s bed and asked softly, “May I examine your injured foot?”
Xie Jing shyly shifted her foot forward. “It’s really nothing. Aunt Shen is overreacting. I’ll be fine after resting.”
After carefully checking and confirming there was no serious issue, the doctor took out the Spray for Xie Jing. Just then, footsteps sounded outside. Thinking it might be Shen Jin, Xie Jing’s face lit up with a smile, only for it to vanish as quickly as it appeared.
It was Shen Tuo, who barged in boisterously, exclaiming, “Xie Jing, what happened? Where are you hurt? Are you okay?”
Noticing everyone in the room staring at him, Shen Tuo scratched his head. “Am I interrupting?”
The doctor briskly sprayed the medication onto Xie Jing’s ankle, filling the room with a strong medicinal scent. Shen Tuo pinched his nose and said in a muffled voice, “Foot injury? Then you can’t go out with me.”
In low spirits, Xie Jing didn’t feel like engaging with Shen Tuo. She hung her head, staring dejectedly at her injured foot.
After treating the injury, the doctor took out several Plasters from her medical bag and left the Spray behind, instructing, “If your ankle swells tomorrow, first use the Spray, then apply these. Three times a day. If the pain persists after three days, call me again.”
Xie Jing nodded.
Shen Tuo hovered nearby, unfazed by being ignored.
The doctor stood up, and the housekeeper escorted her out. Then a voice came from the doorway: “Shen Tuo, see Dr. Gu out for me.”
Shen Jin had changed into casual clothes and emerged.
Shen Tuo immediately straightened up, shedding his earlier nonchalant demeanor.
Xie Jing looked up, unconsciously pouting, her eyes fixed on Shen Jin.
“Xie Jing, I’ll go see the guest out first and be right back to keep you company,” Shen Tuo said.
Xie Jing nodded absently, her gaze still lingering on Shen Jin, who was wearing a black silk blouse with the top two buttons undone at the collarbone, revealing fair skin that was hard to look away from.
Her hair was still up, but a few loose strands had fallen by her ears, framing her cheeks and lending her a sudden vividness.
“What’s wrong?” The room was now empty, yet Xie Jing continued staring blankly at Shen Jin, who instinctively glanced down at her outfit. She had grabbed it randomly from the closet, but it shouldn’t be a problem, after all, all her clothes were coordinated by stylists according to her preferences. As long as she wore them, they’d suit her.
Xie Jing snapped out of her daze, blushing. Hesitantly, she asked, “Auntie… can I call you ‘sister’ instead?”
Shen Jin froze. Unconsciously, she tucked the loose strands behind her ear and replied softly, “We’re of different generations.”
Xie Jing pursed her lips, her expression somewhat downcast.
Seeing her like this, Shen Jin coughed lightly. “In private, it’s fine.”
Xie Jing looked up and flashed Shen Jin a sweet smile. “Sister!”
“Mm.” Shen Jin responded, then asked, “How’s your foot? Does it still hurt?” She stepped closer, her gaze falling on Xie Jing’s leg stretched across the bed.
Perhaps for easier treatment, Xie Jing had changed into very short sleep shorts. As she shifted on the bed, her fair thighs were fully exposed.
Xie Jing wiggled her foot and whispered, “A little.”
“Then be careful tonight. What did the doctor say?”
Shen Jin picked up the air conditioner remote from the bedside table and adjusted the room’s temperature slightly higher. Xie Jing tilted her head to look at her. “She told me to apply the medicine first. If it doesn’t get better in three days, I should see her again.”
Shen Jin set down the remote and picked up the medicine on the nightstand to examine it. Tall and poised, she stood by Xie Jing’s bedside, and Xie Jing’s eyes followed her every move.
“Mm, that’s fine.” After checking, Shen Jin asked Xie Jing, “Do you want to sleep or use your phone?”
Xie Jing shook her head and smiled at Shen Jin. “I want to remove my makeup.”
“Sister, my makeup remover is on the vanity. Can you help me take it off?” She lifted her small face, her cheeks flushed pink as if brushed by peach blossoms, radiating an alluring glow like a ripe peach, tempting to taste.
When she called her “sister,” it made one’s heart feel sweet, a little shy, yet craving to hear her say it again.
Shen Jin lowered her eyes, unruffled.
“I’ll call the maid!”
Xie Jing huffed. “I was joking! Sister, just bring it to me. I’ll do it myself!”
Shen Jin turned and fetched the items from the vanity. Xie Jing lowered her head, focusing on removing her makeup, while Shen Jin’s gaze wandered around the room. Finding nothing changed, she felt awkward standing there but thought Xie Jing might still need company, so she stepped toward the balcony.
Both her and Xie Jing’s rooms had small balconies, and the distance between the two wasn’t far, just an arm’s length apart, easily crossed by an adult. Standing on the balcony as the sun set, Shen Jin saw the car sending off Dr. Gu just departing. Shen Tuo looked up and noticed her, waving. “Mom, I’ve sent Dr. Gu off! How’s Xie Jing?”
Shen Jin nodded without saying anything. Hearing Xie Jing call her from inside, she went back in. Shen Tuo sighed his rowdy friends were already pestering him on the phone and glanced upstairs while answering.
Shen Jin reentered the room. “What is it? Do you need anything else?”
Xie Jing glared at her, enunciating each word. “I don’t want to see Shen Tuo! Tell him not to come up here!”
Shen Jin acknowledged with a hum and waited for Xie Jing to continue.
Seeing Shen Jin’s calm expression unchanged, Xie Jing relaxed and lazily said, “Sister, I’m hungry.”
Her tone was adorable as she placed a hand on her stomach and looked down. Amusement flickered in Shen Jin’s eyes, but Xie Jing missed it while gathering the items beside her and tossing them into the trash.
“I’ll have someone bring your meal to your room,” Shen Jin said.
Xie Jing looked up at her. “Will you eat with me, sister?”
Shen Jin shook her head. “There’s something at the company I need to handle. I’ll make sure Shen Tuo doesn’t disturb you. Rest well for a few days. If you need anything, call Aunt Ju. I’ll arrange for someone to take care of you.”
Xie Jing nodded, her amber-like eyes warm as she gazed at Shen Jin, reluctant to see her go.
Shen Jin exuded an aura of steadiness and reliability. Even though she didn’t do much, people instinctively found her utterly dependable.
As Shen Jin approached, Xie Jing unconsciously leaned toward her. Shen Jin extended her fair palm and said, “Give me your phone.”
Xie Jing let out a small “ah,” and Shen Jin, reconsidering, lowered her hand and looked at her. “I’ll dictate, you note it down.”
Xie Jing puzzledly took out her phone as Shen Jin recited a string of numbers. Staring at the recorded digits, Xie Jing seemed lost in thought.
“That’s my phone number. Call me anytime if you need anything.”
Clutching her phone, Xie Jing watched Shen Jin turn away. She sat on the bed as the sunset painted the sky in vast swathes of pink.
Downstairs, Shen Jin glanced up at the building before getting into a car headed for the company.
No sooner had Shen Jin arrived at the office than Ge Xinqing, who was supposed to be inspecting a site in the northwest, stormed into her office in a rage.
Ge Xinqing slammed her hand on the desk. “What’s going on with the Luo family? Didn’t they always prioritize supplying our company with the best materials? Today when I went to secure a batch, someone else had already taken them! They didn’t even reserve any for us!”
