My Gorgeous Neighbor Is Cooking Every Day - Chapter 34
Chapter 34
Xia Xingye was stunned, but quickly waved her hand and said: “No, no rush. Tell me when you feel ready, Sister.”
Although she wanted to know the reason, listening to Little Jiang and knowing that Jiang Yingyue clearly didn’t want to tell her, Xia Xingye felt Jiang Yingyue had her reasons, even if she didn’t know what they were. Her sudden question was just an impulsive reaction to what Little Jiang had said. Now that she had calmed down and thought about it, she was curious, but she didn’t need to know the reason right now.
More than knowing the specific reason, Jiang Yingyue’s attitude was reassuring. She was willing to believe that Jiang Yingyue was keeping it from her not to harm her, but for a truly compelling reason.
Since that was the case, there was no need for her to know the reason immediately. She leaned close to Jiang Yingyue, sweetly called out “Sister,” and asked: “I’m very important to you, right?”
Jiang Yingyue nodded. Xia Xingye was indeed important to her. She knew many people, but few people she cared about, and Xia Xingye was one of them.
“I can’t live without you, Sister,” Xia Xingye said half-jokingly, half-seriously. “I want to be friends with you forever.”
Jiang Yingyue looked at her and asked softly: “Just friends?”
Xia Xingye didn’t understand, but immediately corrected herself: “I want to be the best, best friends.”
No matter what she said, the only word Xia Xingye could utter was “friend.”
Jiang Yingyue looked at her, saw her innocent face, and could only shake her head helplessly: “I really don’t know if you’re pretending not to know, or if you truly don’t know?”
“What don’t I know?” Xia Xingye blinked in confusion. “Did I say something wrong?”
But she really wanted to be the closest person to Jiang Yingyue, close enough that Jiang Yingyue could tell her anything without reservation, and close enough to rightfully get angry at Jiang Yingyue when she did something dangerous.
Although she had gotten angry when Jiang Yingyue did dangerous things, she always felt a lack of confidence, feeling like she didn’t have the standing to be angry.
Just like her mother told her, they were only friends. Jiang Yingyue was doing her own job, and Xia Xingye shouldn’t interfere.
But what kind of relationship could be so close that she could meddle so much? Xia Xingye’s simple mind hadn’t gone in the direction of romance yet.
The more confused Xia Xingye was, the more Jiang Yingyue felt she might be overthinking it. She couldn’t assume Xia Xingye had other feelings for her just because she was always sticking to her and always saying sweet things.
For some reason, the thought of Xia Xingye having other feelings for her didn’t repulse Jiang Yingyue; instead, it made her happy.
Looking at Xia Xingye again, Jiang Yingyue felt a little puzzled as to whether Xia Xingye’s feelings for her were what she hoped they were.
With both of them preoccupied, Little Jiang suddenly spoke: “Stop thinking so much. Take me to eat delicious food.”
“What delicious food can you even eat?” Xia Xingye asked curiously. “Can you eat incense too?”
Xia Xingye didn’t usually pay attention to what Little Jiang ate, but recently, seeing other ghosts eat incense and such, she asked casually.
“Why can’t I eat it?” Little Jiang said self-righteously. “I’m a great hero! I also deserve to eat lots of delicious food.”
Hearing Little Jiang say that, Xia Xingye rubbed her chin and asked: “Do you want a burger?”
“Are burgers good?” Little Jiang asked cautiously. “If they’re not good, I don’t want them.”
“We think they’re pretty good. I don’t know if you’ll like them. Since that’s the case, let’s go try one.”
Xia Xingye looked at Jiang Yingyue after speaking: “Is that okay, Sister?”
Jiang Yingyue had never fed Little Jiang a burger before, but with Xia Xingye suggesting it, she nodded and said: “We can try.”
Little Jiang said anxiously: “Shouldn’t you be asking me? Why are you making the decision for me?” It hadn’t even decided if it wanted a burger yet!
“Alright, alright. Be satisfied with what you get to eat,” Xia Xingye said dismissively. “If you complain again, you won’t get anything to eat.”
“Why are you so bossy?” Little Jiang deliberately wailed for a moment, then complained to Jiang Yingyue: “Don’t hang out with her anymore.”
Its tone was very agitated when it said not to hang out with Xia Xingye. Afraid that Jiang Yingyue wouldn’t listen, it added: “I can help you find a better person.”
“Hey, hey, hey, what do you mean? What do you mean ‘find a better person’?” Xia Xingye didn’t look at Jiang Yingyue. She was worried Jiang Yingyue would listen to Little Jiang.
She snatched Little Jiang back immediately, narrowed her eyes, and stared at it: “Are you trying to find someone else to replace me?”
Little Jiang snorted: “Why can’t I? Wasn’t it my credit that you two met? What’s wrong with me wanting to find someone else for her?”
“You try it. Say that one more time and see if I’ll throw you out.”
Faced with Xia Xingye’s threat, Little Jiang was uncharacteristically unafraid. Instead, it said righteously: “Why should you throw me away? You’re not…”
It was suddenly snatched back by Jiang Yingyue mid-sentence.
Xia Xingye still stared at Little Jiang and asked: “I’m not what?”
Jiang Yingyue put Little Jiang in her pocket, then smiled faintly and said to Xia Xingye: “You said you weren’t in a hurry to know the reason.”
Xia Xingye nodded blankly and said: “I’m not in a hurry to know the reason, but what does that have to do with…”
Mid-sentence, Xia Xingye suddenly realized. Her eyes widened, and she said: “Was what Little Jiang was about to say the secret you haven’t told me, Sister?”
Jiang Yingyue nodded.
Xia Xingye felt a tickle of curiosity. She almost heard the secret! She looked at Little Jiang in Jiang Yingyue’s pocket, somewhat suspicious. Was Jiang Yingyue always keeping an eye on Little Jiang, preventing it from revealing the secret at any time?
Xia Xingye asked: “Sister, roughly when can I know?”
Little Jiang’s voice slowly emerged from Jiang Yingyue’s pocket: “Soon. You’ll know in a short while.”
Hearing Little Jiang’s words, Xia Xingye froze.
She would know soon? The thing she had been agonizing over for so long, she would know so quickly? For a moment, she suspected Little Jiang was lying to her, retaliating for the threat she had made, which was why it was deceiving her.
She looked up, met Jiang Yingyue’s gaze. Jiang Yingyue didn’t refute Little Jiang’s words, and she suddenly believed that what Little Jiang said was true.
Xia Xingye asked with some urgency: “Do I need to prepare anything?”
“You don’t need to prepare anything,” Jiang Yingyue patted the Little Jiang in her pocket. “Telling you now might scare you, and I also don’t know exactly when Little Jiang’s suggested time is.”
While Jiang Yingyue didn’t know how to tell Xia Xingye, she didn’t actually want to hide it forever. The reason she didn’t want Xia Xingye to know now was simply because she was afraid Xia Xingye would be scared. Furthermore, Little Jiang had told her that if she told Xia Xingye too early, things might not develop as she intended.
Jiang Yingyue admitted that she was a little worried that things might go off track. She hoped things would proceed smoothly. Little Jiang also existed for this purpose: to allow her life to proceed smoothly and to prevent her from taking the wrong path.
But none of this needed to be said to Xia Xingye.
Xia Xingye was slightly taken aback: “Sister, you don’t know either? Is Little Jiang trying to trick you into doing something bad?”
She nervously pursed her lips. She couldn’t be blamed for thinking this way. She had always felt that Little Jiang put Jiang Yingyue first, but now, it knew something but wouldn’t tell Jiang Yingyue, making her uneasy and suspicious that Little Jiang had other motives.
Little Jiang protested loudly: “No! I’m keeping quiet for your own good! If I told you, that would actually ruin things!”
Xia Xingye said firmly: “You better not let me catch you trying any tricks.”
She didn’t have much power, but if anyone dared to harm Jiang Yingyue, she would try everything in her power to eliminate anything that could harm Jiang Yingyue.
“By the way, Sister, have you been okay recently?” Xia Xingye asked tentatively.
“I’ve been fine lately. What’s wrong? Is something bothering you?”
Xia Xingye shook her head and said: “No, it’s not me. It’s just that my roommate told me that the school plans to have us get to know people from other departments.”
“Just getting to know them?”
Xia Xingye nodded: “Of course it’s just getting to know them. What else could it be?”
However, she also didn’t understand why the school was arranging for students from different departments to meet. Since the school arranged it, she would follow the school’s plan.
She thought she saw Jiang Yingyue frown, but when she looked again, Jiang Yingyue looked normal, as if she hadn’t made any expression at all.
Xia Xingye was unsure and blinked: “Sister, do you have something you want to say?”
“No. If you want to go, then go.”
This time, Xia Xingye finally heard a hint of displeasure in Jiang Yingyue’s words. She asked hesitantly: “Sister, do you not want me to go?”
“You don’t know why your department is meeting with other departments?”
Xia Xingye shook her head. She really didn’t know why students from different departments should meet.
“It’s a social mixer. This is a social mixer,” Jiang Yingyue repeated. “They are having you go to a social mixer with other people.”
Xia Xingye knew what a social mixer was. She whispered: “No way? We’re just college students. Why would we have a social mixer?”
“Exactly, because you’re college students, they just call it ‘getting to know each other.’ If you weren’t college students, they would call it a blind date.”
Xia Xingye gaped, looking at Jiang Yingyue in disbelief. After a moment of thought, she said: “In that case, why don’t you come with me, Sister?”
Jiang Yingyue was taken aback and countered: “Why should I go with you?”
“But Sister, don’t you not want me to go to the social mixer?” Xia Xingye whispered. “I can’t not go, but you can go with me.”
She hadn’t participated much in school activities originally. Collective activities organized by the school were one thing, but if she constantly skipped activities organized by her class, she would eventually be called out for not being a team player.
Xia Xingye never felt that she wasn’t a team player, but she didn’t have much to say to explain to the teacher. If she didn’t participate in class activities, she was not a team player.
She didn’t quite understand why Jiang Yingyue disliked her going to the social mixer, but she also couldn’t avoid participating. If she asked Jiang Yingyue to go with her, would Jiang Yingyue be happier?
That’s what she thought, so she decided to invite Jiang Yingyue.
Jiang Yingyue finally understood. She said awkwardly: “I’m not a student at your school. I might be kicked out if I go.”
“It’s fine. It’s a university activity. It’s okay to bring a friend occasionally,” Xia Xingye said without batting an eyelid. She believed that once she brought Jiang Yingyue, her classmates wouldn’t say anything rude.
Seeing that Xia Xingye wasn’t joking and genuinely wanted to invite her, Jiang Yingyue slowly nodded: “Alright, I’ll go then.”
Xia Xingye was overjoyed. She hugged her tightly, rubbing her cheek against Jiang Yingyue’s, and said: “Sister is the best.”
