Chapter 9: Her Hands Encircling Bo Yu’s Waist: “You Are Very…”
Bo Yu looked up in surprise at Xie Yinwan, who was floating in the air surrounded by white bubbles and red petals. Her heart beat so violently it felt as if it might leap from her body.
Xie Yinwan was wearing the white Wei-Jin style outfit she had burned for her. The wide sleeves swayed, and her figure was light and graceful, moving like a startled swan. Hovering amidst the drifting clouds of steam, she truly looked like a deity at this moment.
Seeing that Xie Yinwan had received the four new sets of clothes and chosen to wear this one, Bo Yu felt a surge of joy. At least now she knew Xie Yinwan’s preferences; if the ghost didn’t show up next time, she could burn many more dresses to win her over.
“Immortal, you’ve come,” Bo Yu said happily.
Xie Yinwan did not respond. She merely looked down at Bo Yu. After a moment, she tilted her head slightly, arched an eyebrow, and shifted her gaze downward.
Following the ghost’s gaze, Bo Yu looked down and realized that the bubbles that had been there a moment ago had all vanished. Her body was completely exposed in the clear water. Panicking, she quickly pulled up her knees and hugged her shoulders. She looked down at the water; her skin, rising and falling with her breath, rippled in the waves, which reflected her flushing cheeks.
“Indeed, this Immortal has come. Since you were so diligent in sending clothes, why is it that now that I am here, you dare not look at me?”
“…”
Bo Yu had no choice but to look up. We are both women, she tried to convince herself, there is nothing to be embarrassed about.
But the instant she looked up, the bubbles and rose petals began to drift down slowly. It was an incredibly beautiful scene, so beautiful it felt unreal. The slow-falling petals were dreamlike, making Bo Yu forget to breathe.
As the bubbles and petals descended, they gradually veiled Bo Yu’s body. However, one bright red petal landed right on Bo Yu’s fair, flushed cheek and stuck there.
Bo Yu shook her head slightly, but it didn’t fall off; it seemed as if it had been fixed to her face by Xie Yinwan’s magic.
“You are very interesting,” Xie Yinwan said suddenly.
“…”
So she stuck a petal on my face because she finds me interesting?
“What dynasty is this clothing from?” Xie Yinwan asked.
Looking at the clothes on Xie Yinwan—which were truly beautiful and fit her perfectly—Bo Yu’s tone became lighthearted. “It’s from the Wei and Jin periods. It’s very similar to your previous set, so I took the liberty of choosing this era. Immortal, you look beautiful in it.”
Xie Yinwan was even wearing clean white shoes and socks. Her entire being was as white as snow, exuding an ethereal, celestial aura.
“Really,” Bo Yu couldn’t help but praise her again. “Extraordinarily beautiful.”
Xie Yinwan was genuinely pleased, her mood becoming quite good. “You truly have been diligent.”
“It is my honor to serve the Immortal.”
“Heh.”
“…”
Xie Yinwan descended slowly, floating in front of Bo Yu as if lying on the surface of the water. Her clothes dipped into the water but showed no sign of getting wet.
Xie Yinwan’s forehead drew closer and closer to Bo Yu’s, while she simultaneously raised a hand toward Bo Yu’s cheek.
Bo Yu unconsciously held her breath, forgetting to blink. She stared blankly at Xie Yinwan, who was suddenly so close. She watched the ghost’s eyes, which seemed even softer and brighter as they reflected the spots of light and ripples of the water. Bo Yu’s heart beat even faster than before.
However, Xie Yinwan merely plucked the petal from Bo Yu’s face.
Bo Yu’s heart rate suddenly slowed down.
But immediately afterward, Xie Yinwan’s icy fingertips brushed almost imperceptibly against Bo Yu’s cheek as she stuck the petal onto Bo Yu’s forehead.
Bo Yu: “?”
Xie Yinwan: “Interesting.”
“…”
Bo Yu dared not move, allowing Xie Yinwan to treat her like a toy.
Xie Yinwan admired the petal on Bo Yu’s brow with great interest. This “sister” was truly beautiful, and the petal made her look exceptionally delicate and alluring.
Delicate and alluring, perhaps, Xie Yinwan thought.
Because she could not see colors.
In the world of ghosts, there is a sense of smell—one can smell filthy odors—but there is no sight of vibrant colors; everything is a dull, hazy grey. Even when she possessed the doll and went out during the day, she saw a grey day and a grey sun.
But she could imagine the blue sky, white clouds, green trees, and blue mountains during the day, and she could feel the gentle warmth of the sun on her body. Moreover, she wouldn’t see those ugly ghost faces during the daylight. It was already quite good.
Xie Yinwan looked at the fragrant and beautiful sister before her and said coldly again, “Didn’t this Immortal say I do not fear talismans? Why did you dig them up?”
“?” How could she know?
Bo Yu thought quickly. The fact that Xie Yinwan knew about the digging meant she was truly powerful and knew everything. Bo Yu’s eyes lit up with wonder.
Lowering her head, Bo Yu explained softly, “I thought your absence last night was because the talismans blocked you, so I…”
Xie Yinwan narrowed her eyes slightly. She didn’t lose her temper, and her tone remained light. “Bury those five talismans back tomorrow.”
Bo Yu breathed a sigh of relief and nodded obediently. “Okay.”
Xie Yinwan’s expression softened slightly. She raised her hand, peeled the petal from Bo Yu’s forehead, and placed it on Bo Yu’s lips. She asked slowly and eerily, “So, having not seen me for a night, did you miss this Immortal?”
Bo Yu’s cheeks grew mysteriously hot, and her lips felt warm too. She hugged her arms and nodded cautiously. She didn’t dare open her mouth, fearing she would blow the petal off and annoy the ghost again. She also didn’t know why Xie Yinwan was asking her this.
If a human had asked, “Did you miss me?”, it would have been considered flirting. But what about Xie Yinwan? Bo Yu often grumbled to herself that Xie Yinwan was like a “lustful ghost” (Se Gui)—not as an insult, but she suspected Xie Yinwan might actually belong to that classification. Was that why she liked to smell her?
As Bo Yu was thinking, the petal suddenly flew up from her lips, bobbing and swaying before her eyes as if playing, finally landing right on the tip of her nose.
Bo Yu twitched her nose but couldn’t get the petal off.
Xie Yinwan watched her with interest and spoke coldly again: “What does a nod mean? Say it out loud.”
“…”
She truly is unpredictable, turning from hot to cold in an instant.
Bo Yu could see the red blur at the tip of her nose and vaguely understood that Xie Yinwan was likely just a very playful ghost. She cooperated, saying softly, “I did. I thought of you constantly. Truly, I thought of you the entire time.”
This wasn’t exactly a lie. Although it wasn’t “missing” someone in a sentimental way, she had indeed been thinking about Xie Yinwan all day.
“It sounds like the truth.” Xie Yinwan seemed satisfied, her soft hem brushing through the water.
Bo Yu whispered, “It is true.”
After a moment, the petal on the tip of her nose floated up. Xie Yinwan raised her hand, and the petal fell into her palm. In an instant, many petals drifted into her hand, quickly clustering together into the shape of a flower.
Bo Yu was amazed: “!”
In a good mood, Xie Yinwan placed this flower on Bo Yu’s left shoulder. Bo Yu’s heart skipped a beat.
“Do you like it?” Xie Yinwan asked, her voice softening.
Bo Yu noticed that the ghost’s voice was no longer eerie. It turned out Xie Yinwan could speak without the terrifying ghostly sound that frightened ordinary people.
“I like it.” Bo Yu nodded, tilting her head to look at the flower on her shoulder. These petals were loosely gathered, and because there were many of them, they looked full and lush, like a flower in full bloom. Though it had no stamen, it was very special. Bo Yu genuinely liked it; she had never seen a flower like this before.
“Then tell me, is this Immortal a good deity, or a bad ghost?” Xie Yinwan’s voice was low, slightly teasing, slightly alluring.
Bo Yu was suddenly jolted into alertness. Why did Xie Yinwan ask this out of the blue? Had she heard what Bo Yu said to the doll? Was she in the bedroom this morning? Was she going to settle the score?
Bo Yu widened her eyes. Xie Yinwan tilted her head and smiled gently at her.
Terrified but not daring to show it, Bo Yu could only play dumb. She blinked her obedient, innocent eyes and said to Xie Yinwan, “You are a good deity, of course.”
Xie Yinwan smiled—a mocking, ambiguous smile. “Oh, then you are very well-behaved.”
“…”
Bo Yu tried her best to look sincere and smiled at her.
Xie Yinwan watched Bo Yu in silence for a while. Suddenly, she flew up, standing high in the air.
The next second, Bo Yu also flew out of the bathtub. The flower on her left shoulder scattered into the water. Her limbs were forced into a straight, standing posture, and just like that—naked and with traces of foam clinging to her—she flew right in front of Xie Yinwan!
