My Ex Told Me She’s Still In Love With Me - Chapter 5
Chapter 5: Your Dog
“You’re finally back and you only just thought of looking for me now?” Jin Le slammed her handbag onto the table, looking genuinely upset.
Meng Qingwu hurriedly moved her coffee cup away, fearing the other woman might throw it at her in a fit of rage. She said coaxingly, “Wasn’t I busy with a lot of things earlier? I’ve cleared my schedule specifically to spend time with you.”
Jin Le was originally quite angry, but seeing Meng Qingwu’s placating expression, her temper softened by half. She gave her a sharp look. “Years abroad with zero news—I thought you’d forgotten all of us!”
At those words, Meng Qingwu looked visibly guilty. Fortunately, her temper wasn’t as explosive as it was years ago; otherwise, she might have actually received a slap just now.
“What are you drinking?” Meng Qingwu tried to change the subject. No matter how she looked at it, she was in the wrong here. But back then, she truly didn’t want any contact with anyone back home; she was even more afraid of hearing news about Cheng Yi from them.
She admitted she was a coward back then—so cowardly that she fled from everything.
Jin Le sighed softly, her gaze turning sympathetic. After ordering an Americano, she fell silent.
“Why the silence? Do you feel we’ve grown distant?” Meng Qingwu asked gently.
“Distant my ass!” Jin Le glared at her.
Meng Qingwu laughed; Jin Le was just as fiery as ever.
“I just… really wanted to ask how you’ve been, but I didn’t know if I should,” Jin Le’s voice was soft. She was afraid the question might bring up painful memories.
Meng Qingwu was momentarily stunned, then she laughed. She stood up and sat next to Jin Le, wrapping an arm around her. “Why can’t you ask? You can ask anything you want.”
“And look at me now. Do I look like I’m doing poorly?” She opened her arms wide to give Jin Le a good look.
Jin Le: “…” She couldn’t help but be amused by such narcissistic behavior.
“What about your love life? In all those years abroad, how many people did you date?” Jin Le asked tentatively.
“Oh, way too many to count! Men, women—I lost track!”
“…Really?”
Meng Qingwu simply winked and said nothing more.
“I’d believe you if I was crazy!” Jin Le reached out and pinched Meng Qingwu’s cheeks, kneading them like dough just as she had in university.
The “Cold and Beautiful” persona of the eldest Miss Meng was being torn to shreds right then and there.
“Gimme shome faysh… people are watching!” Meng Qingwu mumbled.
Jin Le rolled her eyes but eventually let go, her tone more relaxed. “The others in the dorm don’t know you’re back yet, do they? When do you plan on telling them?”
Rubbing her face, Meng Qingwu said miserably, “Maybe I should tell them one by one?” She was genuinely afraid that if she told them all at once, she’d be mobbed. Did she not have any dignity left?
Jin Le smiled. “You can try that and see if you get beaten up even worse.”
Meng Qingwu: “…”
Under Jin Le’s “death stare,” she finally contacted her former university roommates and best friends. After sending the messages, her expression grew even more bitter. No matter how much of a boss she was in the outside world, she was still at the bottom of the food chain here. Aren’t the youngest in the dorm usually the most pampered? Why was she the one being bullied?
Jin Le took a sip of her coffee, leisurely watching the four-person group chat explode with notifications. After a while, she nodded.
“You’re lucky. One is away on a business trip, and the other is rushing a project report and has no time for you.”
Meng Qingwu propped her head up; she could already feel the impending storm.
“Have you decided to stay in the country?” Jin Le looked up.
“Yes.” Meng Qingwu’s expression turned serious for a second before she added miserably, “The food abroad almost made me vomit. I still think our domestic cuisine is the best.”
Jin Le burst out laughing, shaking her head. Looking at Meng Qingwu’s relaxed demeanor, she hesitated before asking, “What about you and Cheng Yi? How are things?”
Her tone was cautious. Four years had passed, and she didn’t know if Meng Qingwu had moved on.
Meng Qingwu paused, then let out a sigh with a smile. “It’s been four years; I’ve long let it go. The world doesn’t stop turning just because someone leaves.”
Jin Le looked at her and felt she was telling the truth. Yet, at the same time, she couldn’t forget how hysterical Meng Qingwu had been the night she left the country—drunkenly crying and screaming for Cheng Yi, only to realize that finding her was useless, finally crying herself to sleep. By the time they woke up the next day, she was gone, and her phone was disconnected.
“If you’ve really let go, that’s for the best,” Jin Le smiled. As a member of Meng Qingwu’s “support squad,” having seen how much Cheng Yi had hurt her, she naturally didn’t want Meng Qingwu to still be pining over that jerk.
“Don’t worry. This time, I came back specifically to give her a taste of her own medicine!” Meng Qingwu winked.
“Hmm?” Jin Le was confused.
Meng Qingwu slowly took a sip of her coffee, teasing Jin Le’s curiosity. Only when Jin Le was about to snap did she say leisurely, “Do you know who I am to her officially right now?”
Jin Le: “…” She gritted her teeth. “Spit it out!”
Meng Qingwu smiled. “I’m her sister-in-law!”
Jin Le froze, looking at Meng Qingwu in disbelief. “For real?” Had this girl changed her sexual orientation while abroad? If she remembered correctly, Cheng Yi only had one brother!
Meng Qingwu hummed. “Half-true, half-fake.”
Recalling the phrase “specifically to give her a taste of her own medicine,” Jin Le understood. Once she figured it out, she found it somewhat absurd. She laughed. “That’s a low blow. Does her brother know about your past relationship?”
Meng Qingwu shook her head. “If he knew, why would he cooperate with me?”
Jin Le laughed, thinking that Cheng Yi must be feeling incredibly sick right now. Your ex-girlfriend becoming your sister-in-law? That’s enough to make anyone question their life choices.
…
Whether Cheng Yi was disgusted was unknown, but Meng Shuyu was definitely feeling sick right now.
She hadn’t known that Lan Xining would be at this tea party. If she had known, she wouldn’t have come even if she were killed.
Meng Shuyu remained expressionless, but the woman beside her smiled seductively, looking like a succubus out to drain someone’s life essence.
“What? Are you that unhappy to see me?” Lan Xining leaned halfway across the table, propping her chin on her hand and smiling at her.
Meng Shuyu glanced at the people in the distance. Not a single person was coming over to talk to them. Everyone seemed to have far too much “situational awareness.” Most importantly, Yu Qingshuang, who was supposed to come, was a no-show. Her face darkened as she ignored the woman in front of her.
“President Meng, we were sisters-in-law once. Is there a need to be so distant?” Lan Xining reached out and tapped the back of Meng Shuyu’s hand with her fingertip, her gesture full of flirtation.
Meng Shuyu’s expression changed instantly. She hissed, “Lan Xining, don’t try to disgust me!” She rubbed the back of her hand as if trying to erase the sensation of the touch.
Seeing this, Lan Xining’s eyes darkened. She gave a cold smile. “You find it disgusting just because I touched you like that? Then how did you endure the ‘disgust’ back then, when you were moaning so loudly?”
The words brought back a memory that made Meng Shuyu’s face turn incredibly ugly.
Seeing her like this, Lan Xining felt a pang of pity. She stood up, moved behind Meng Shuyu, and pulled her into an embrace from behind. She whispered, “Actually, you’re not completely indifferent to me, are you?”
Meng Shuyu gritted her teeth. “Keep your delusions to yourself and stop disgusting me!”
“Is that so?” Lan Xining looked down, her fingertip tracing slowly along Meng Shuyu’s throat. “It’s been so many years. Haven’t you felt lonely?”
“Lan Xining!” Meng Shuyu grabbed her hand and growled.
Despite having one hand caught, Lan Xining remained unmoved. She lowered her voice and said, “Back then, my brother was so obedient, yet you still trained him like a dog. Eventually, he couldn’t take it and you divorced.”
“But if he couldn’t take it, I can. Meng Shuyu… I can be your dog.”
“A dog that only listens to you, and only wags its tail for you.” Lan Xining smiled gently, speaking as if it were the most natural thing in the world.
Meng Shuyu looked disgusted and tried to pry the other woman’s hands off her. “If you want to be a dog, go be one yourself. Don’t come looking for me!”
Lan Xining quietly took Meng Shuyu’s earlobe into her mouth, hiding her actions from the others, and mumbled, “But I… only want to be your dog.”
“Don’t you want someone who only listens to you? Qingwu is all grown up now; you can’t control her anymore, can you?”
“You can control me.”
