My Ex Told Me She’s Still In Love With Me - Chapter 30
Chapter 30: Love-Brain
The lips pressed against her were soft and warm, a hesitant kiss that brought a wave of itchiness and an unfulfilled emptiness.
“Qingwu…”
Cheng Yi closed her eyes, the hollow feeling in her chest making her want to hold the other woman tightly.
Meng Qingwu chuckled softly. Her teeth gently grazed the skin, slowly grinding against the flesh, leaving one faint mark after another.
“Qingwu…”
This time, Cheng Yi’s voice carried a slight sob, sounding unexpectedly pitiful.
A flash of mischief flickered in Meng Qingwu’s eyes. She set fires everywhere, yet refused to give her the relief of a spark.
This continued until Madam Meng had originally opened the ward door (interruption).
Cheng Yi opened her eyes and said softly, “It’s very uncomfortable.”
“So, do you want me to solve it for you now?”
Meng Qingwu sneered. “A shower would be faster.”
She lay back and closed her eyes. Listening to the shallow breathing beside her, she heard Cheng Yi stand up.
Click.
The lights went out.
The light perceived through her eyelids instantly plunged into darkness, and the person beside her moved closer. Cheng Yi lifted the blanket and slid back in, carefully avoiding the injured leg, turning on her side to take her into her arms.
“The fire in the body is easy to extinguish, but the fire in the heart is not.”
Meng Qingwu found a comfortable position in her embrace, neither agreeing nor disagreeing. Cheng Yi held her a little tighter. Although they hadn’t continued, being able to hold her like this was enough for now.
…
The next morning, sunlight filtered through the thin curtains, falling into a transparent glass like a cup of golden wine.
Meng Qingwu’s eyelids twitched, but soon, the light she had found piercing softened. She drifted back to sleep.
Cheng Yi’s palm was hovering just above Meng Qingwu’s eyes, blocking the glare. The sunlight fell on the back of Cheng Yi’s hand instead, covering the fair skin in a hazy gold veil. Amidst the silence, the scene was tranquil and beautiful.
She maintained this posture until Meng Qingwu woke up.
A small whimper escaped Meng Qingwu’s throat as she stretched her body. Her arm brushed against a warm, soft form. She frowned, turned her head, and saw Cheng Yi’s face wearing a faint smile.
Only then did she realize.
Last night, they had slept together. With her ex-girlfriend—now her lover.
She chuckled softly, seemingly finding it amusing. She brushed Cheng Yi’s hand away and glanced at her lazily. “Not tired?”
To hold one position for so long… she certainly had persistence.
Cheng Yi beamed and shook her head. Meng Qingwu wondered if it was just an illusion, but Cheng Yi’s eyes seemed much more “alive” than before.
Meng Qingwu shook her head and sat up, straightening her messy pajamas. Cheng Yi hadn’t been dead before, so what was all this about being “alive”?
Seeing her get up, Cheng Yi expertly went into the bathroom to bring out her toiletries, helping her get ready like a gentle, virtuous little wife.
Meng Qingwu accepted the care as her due. After washing up, she said, “I’m hungry. I want the soup dumplings from that shop in the University Town.”
Cheng Yi nodded. “I’ll have someone buy them.”
“Aren’t you going yourself?”
Cheng Yi faltered. “Do you want me to go personally? But if I go, no one will be here to look after you.” She didn’t feel comfortable leaving Meng Qingwu alone while she was immobile.
Meng Qingwu scrolled through her phone, saying nonchalantly, “I’m not going anywhere. I’m just lying in bed; what could I possibly need help with?”
Cheng Yi stood by her for a moment. Eventually, she placed everything she thought Meng Qingwu might need within arm’s reach and picked up her car keys.
“Then I’ll go buy breakfast for you.”
“Mhm,” Meng Qingwu replied flatly.
…
It was less than a twenty-minute drive to the dumpling shop, but while the distance was short, the line was long.
Cheng Yi stood at the back of the queue. Since this was outside the university where she worked, most of the people passing by were students.
“Professor Cheng?” someone called out.
Cheng Yi looked over to see a tall, slender girl who looked like a model, dressed with a keen sense of fashion. She had a slight impression of her—the girl had audited her classes and had apparently already entered the modeling world.
Cheng Yi nodded, not intending to chat much. But the girl didn’t seem to notice the distance. She struck up a conversation with a bright, confident smile. She radiated a self-assurance that made her very attractive.
Standing together, the two were a sight to behold: one elegant and cold, the other bright and confident. Naturally, they drew many eyes.
Cheng Yi frowned subtly, disliking the attention.
“Professor Cheng, are you interested in trying some modeling for fun? I think you’d be perfect for it.” The girl’s smile was radiant and sincere.
Cheng Yi shook her head, expressing no interest.
“Are you sure you won’t try? Your features are excellent,” the girl persisted.
Cheng Yi shook her head again. Seeing it was her turn at the counter, she said hurriedly, “I have things to do, I have to go.”
“Professor!” The girl grabbed Cheng Yi’s hand. “Please consider it. I’ll wait for you to change your mind!” As she spoke, she pressed a business card into Cheng Yi’s hand.
Cheng Yi watched her run off, then looked at the card. After a moment’s hesitation, she didn’t throw it away, but slipped it into her pocket.
…
By the time Cheng Yi returned to the hospital, it was nearly 9:00 AM.
Meng Qingwu looked up. Perhaps from the rush, Cheng Yi’s face was slightly flushed, and her chest heaved.
“No need to be in such a hurry. I’m not going to run away,” Meng Qingwu said slowly.
Cheng Yi smiled, said nothing, and set up a small over-bed table, placing the breakfast in front of her. As she approached, Meng Qingwu’s nose twitched. She gave Cheng Yi a teasing look.
“I didn’t realize Professor Cheng was so popular. Even a trip for breakfast can attract ‘peach blossoms’ (romance).”
Cheng Yi froze, then quickly smelled her own arm. There was a faint, sweet perfume scent on her—not one she used.
“No… I just ran into a student and chatted for a bit,” Cheng Yi explained, regretting her lack of caution.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s a student or not.” Meng Qingwu picked up a dumpling and took a bite, looking satisfied. “It still tastes the same as before.”
Her complete lack of concern made Cheng Yi’s chest feel like it was submerged in water—the pressure was stifling. The smell of the dumplings soon masked the faint sweet perfume. Cheng Yi took a breath and accompanied her through a silent breakfast.
“You should go back,” Meng Qingwu said after finishing.
Cheng Yi, clearing the trash, shook her head. “I don’t feel right leaving you.”
“Cheng Yi, you need to understand that my money doesn’t fall from the sky.” Meng Qingwu looked down at her phone to handle some work, mentioning the money she had invested in Cheng Yi’s project. She wasn’t paying for Cheng Yi to do the work of a hospital caregiver.
Cheng Yi fell silent. The woman on the bed looked lazy and effortless, yet she was magnetic. When those charming eyes looked at you, it was impossible not to sink into them.
And Cheng Yi had sunk.
She didn’t want to leave. Since their reunion, she constantly wanted to see her, to stay by her side, to make up for those four empty years. But they were no longer in a position where they could be reckless. They had their respective jobs and responsibilities to others.
She lowered her head and finally conceded. “I’ll come to see you tonight.”
“Mhm,” Meng Qingwu replied, not even offering a glance. In the middle of this sweltering summer, Cheng Yi felt a chill rising from the bottom of her heart.
…
Shortly after Cheng Yi left, the assistant arrived with a stack of documents. As soon as she entered, her eyes darted around, clearly looking for someone.
“Stop looking. She’s gone,” Meng Qingwu said.
“Gone?” The assistant was baffled. She leaned in and whispered, “Yesterday she looked so worried about you, and today she just leaves?”
The assistant had seen Cheng Yi before, but the state Cheng Yi was in yesterday had shocked her. She never thought such a gentle, composed person could look so disheveled and desperate.
“Does she not have her own things to do? Standing guard over me all day wouldn’t make sense,” Meng Qingwu said coolly. “Even a three-year-old has homework.”
The assistant: “…” That wasn’t what I meant; I just wanted some gossip.
Meng Qingwu glanced at her, but her mind drifted back to a long time ago.
…
Flashback: Years ago, when their love was at its peak…
The wind whistled outside, but it was warm inside. Meng Qingwu was lazing in bed, hugging Cheng Yi and rubbing her face against her. “Cheng Yi~ It’s so cold outside…”
Beneath the quilt, two warm bodies were entwined. The warmth pulled them both toward the desire to drown in this “gentle village.”
Cheng Yi turned to face her, stroking her beautiful features. “But you have class this morning.”
Meng Qingwu looked like a clingy kitten, her paws desperately trying to hold onto her owner. She groaned in pain, hugging Cheng Yi tighter.
“Why is ‘class’ even a thing in winter?!” “If only there were no classes, I could hold you and sleep all day.” She smiled, satisfied with the idea.
“What are you saying? You’re a student; how could you not have class?” Cheng Yi laughed, pinching her nose. “You’ll be late if you don’t get up.”
A warm bed and a gentle lover—the two most fatal poisons in the world. Meng Qingwu had tasted them both. “I just want to stay with you and do nothing.”
Cheng Yi chuckled. “I didn’t realize our little Student Meng was such a ‘Love-Brain’ (someone whose brain is only filled with love).”
The low, soft laughter in her ear was like a seductive hook. Meng Qingwu’s heart softened. She leaned in to kiss the corner of Cheng Yi’s mouth and murmured, “Would you stop liking me if I were a ‘Love-Brain’?”
As their lips met in a light, lingering kiss, Meng Qingwu heard Cheng Yi’s voice:
“Then how do you know that I’m not a ‘Love-Brain’ too?”
