My Ex Told Me She’s Still In Love With Me - Chapter 22
Chapter 22: Not Dead
A cold breeze swept through, dispersing the suddenly frozen atmosphere. Meng Qingwu looked at Ye Xiuyu’s forced, “dashing” posture and laughed.
“Mr. Ye is bound to be disappointed. I have things to do and cannot accompany you.”
Her laugh carried a hint of laziness, and the mole beneath her eye made her look bone-deep charming, making one’s eyes light up.
Ye Xiuyu’s gaze became increasingly bold. “I didn’t expect Miss Meng to recognize me. Since we know each other, can’t whatever you have to do be pushed back?” He glanced at Liang Siming next to her and added meaningfully, “Or is this ‘business’ Miss Meng mentioned something you need to do with Mr. Liang?”
Meng Qingwu glanced at the instantly revitalized Liang Siming and said calmly, “The little canary I keep at home has prepared dinner and is waiting for me. If I don’t go back, she’ll be heartbroken.”
Ye Xiuyu: “…” Liang Siming was stunned.
Meng Qingwu curled her lips in a farewell smile and strolled away, seemingly indifferent to the weight of her bombshell statement. After she left, Ye Xiuyu and Liang Siming looked at each other, both completely speechless.
Getting into her car, Meng Qingwu sighed at her own growing lack of integrity—the lies were coming out far too easily now. She pulled out her phone and messaged Madam Meng.
Meng Qingwu: One piece of good news and one piece of bad news. Which do you want first? Madam Meng: … Madam Meng: I also have one good news and one bad news. Which do you want first? Meng Qingwu: …
Had Madam Meng learned to be a troll?
Meng Qingwu: Bad news first. I want to see what Madam Meng considers “bad.” Madam Meng: (Smile emoji) Madam Meng: Right now, downstairs, there is a wall made of flowers with a giant photo of your head on it. Someone is confessing to you.
Meng Qingwu was dumbfounded. Meng Qingwu: What is going on?!
Madam Meng quickly sent a photo. It was a massive heart made of red and pink roses, and right in the center was a photo of Meng Qingwu’s face. It was placed right in front of the entrance to Shuiyang International, where everyone could see it.
Meng Qingwu: … Which traitor wants me dead?!
But the most terrifying part was the next message.
Madam Meng: Do you see that loudspeaker? It’s currently shouting your name, saying they will love you for all eternity.
Meng Qingwu felt like she was suffocating. However, she noticed something different—Madam Meng seemed to be… enjoying the show. This made her both annoyed and amused. Just because I lied to her once?! Does she have to be this vengeful?
This childish behavior actually made Meng Qingwu laugh. This version of Madam Meng was much better than the overbearing woman who made people want to flee. They felt closer.
Meng Qingwu: And what’s your good news? Madam Meng: I saw Cheng Yi. Madam Meng: Not dead. Meng Qingwu: …
The “not dead” part was unnecessary, wasn’t it? After all, she did save your daughter! Still, knowing Cheng Yi was safe allowed the anxiety she’d carried for three months to finally dissipate.
Meng Qingwu: Where did you see her?
Madam Meng refused to elaborate, only saying she looked fine and wasn’t missing any limbs. Meng Qingwu suspected her mother was hiding something, but she couldn’t force it.
Madam Meng: What about your news?
Meng Qingwu: The bad news is, I didn’t get the land. Madam Meng: (Smile emoji) Meng Qingwu: The good news is, I let Zhou Zheqiang buy it for 2.3 billion. Madam Meng: Did he provoke you? Meng Qingwu: He tried to drive up my price and he hit on me (Raising eyebrows.jpg). [Madam Meng]: … You did well.
Meng Qingwu laughed out loud. It seemed Madam Meng still had a protective maternal streak.
…
After ending the chat, for the first time in four years, Meng Qingwu dialed Cheng Yi’s number. As the ringtone played, her emotions settled. Just as the song was about to end, the call connected.
There was a long silence. Neither spoke. Finally, Meng Qingwu took a deep breath. “Are you better?”
Cheng Yi: “Better.” Meng Qingwu nodded. “That’s good.”
Then, silence again. Meng Qingwu blinked and hung up the phone. She had wanted to ask more, but the moment she heard that voice, all her words stuck in her throat.
On the other end, Cheng Yi put down her phone, looking dazed. “Professor? What’s wrong?” her assistant, Nie Qiuyu, asked. Cheng Yi shook her head, but as she picked up her research data, Meng Qingwu’s face was all she could see. During the car accident, she really thought she was going to die. Her only thought then was: I haven’t apologized to Qingwu yet. She had hurt her so deeply but had never said sorry.
She put the data down as a dull ache spread through her chest, making her tremble.
…
“Tell me, what is your relationship with Qingwu?” Cheng Zhan, who usually held himself to high standards, looked haggard and unshaven. Discovering that he was the only “fool” in the room—that Cheng Yi knew everything and Meng Qingwu had used him for another purpose—made him feel truly betrayed.
Cheng Yi looked down. She had expected this question. “She is the person I loved in college.”
Even though he suspected it, hearing her confirm it was still unbelievable. “Why didn’t you tell me at the beginning?” And why act like strangers in front of him?
Cheng Yi remained silent. Seeing her like this made Cheng Zhan feel like he was punching cotton. He grew irritated. Since she was born, his parents’ attention had shifted to her, and he was always told to protect his sister. He had accepted it, but he still felt it was unfair. And now, his sister had essentially allowed him to be “cuckolded” without a word.
“Are you and Qingwu… together?” Cheng Yi lowered her head. After a long silence, she shook her head. “No.” “She doesn’t like me.”
Cheng Zhan was shocked. “She doesn’t like you?” “No,” Cheng Yi’s voice was soft.
Cheng Zhan: “…” So… no green hat? “Then, do you still like her?”
