Chapter 19: One Gets Tired After Chasing for Too Long
Meng Qingwu picked up her phone and dialed Cheng Zhan. At first, he asked about her condition, but as soon as she inquired about Cheng Yi, he began to hesitate.
“She’s fine. She’s doing okay, she’s just used to that particular hospital, so she moved back there,” Cheng Zhan said evasively after being pressed.
Meng Qingwu frowned. What does “used to that hospital” mean? Since when do people have a “habit” of going to a specific hospital?
But no matter how much she prodded, Cheng Zhan refused to say another word, let alone allow her to visit. Meng Qingwu felt that things weren’t as simple as they seemed, but if they wouldn’t talk, she couldn’t exactly use extreme measures to investigate.
“Well?” Meng Shuyu asked as she saw her daughter put down the phone. Regardless of the past, Cheng Yi had saved Meng Qingwu, so concern was only natural.
Meng Qingwu looked a bit dazed and shook her head. “I’m not sure.” Judging by Cheng Zhan’s tone, it shouldn’t be too serious, right? But why hide the extent of the injuries?
Lan Xining, standing to the side, said leisurely, “Don’t worry, she’s definitely fine. If something really happened, with the way the Cheng family treasures that daughter, they would have rushed over here to demand Qingwu’s life as compensation by now.”
Meng Qingwu: “…” Meng Shuyu: “…”
Is that any way to talk?
“Get out!” Meng Shuyu said coldly.
Hearing that she was being kicked out, Lan Xining immediately sat closer to Meng Qingwu and grabbed her hand, acting as if she were afraid Meng Shuyu would physically drag her away.
Meng Shuyu: “…”
Meng Qingwu was amused by the gesture. In the outside world, Lan Xining was a powerful, commanding woman, but in front of Ms. Meng, she was like a mouse seeing a cat—visibly “wimped out.”
Ultimately, Lan Xining didn’t leave, though Ms. Meng treated her like thin air. Seeing Ms. Meng hand Meng Qingwu chopsticks while completely ignoring her, Lan Xining let out a long sigh. “Indeed, one should never try to compete with a child for affection. No matter how hard you try, you can’t beat the bond of one’s own flesh and blood.”
Meng Shuyu’s expression changed, and she gritted her teeth slightly.
However, Meng Qingwu sensed something was off. She took the chopsticks and looked at the two of them, asking hesitantly, “Mom, Auntie… you two?”
Lan Xining’s words were too strange. “Compete for affection”?
Lan Xining blinked, smiling like a fox. No matter what Meng Qingwu thought, she offered neither explanation nor denial. Meanwhile, Meng Shuyu’s face was dark, like a gathering storm.
Meng Qingwu: “…”
She could hardly believe her own suspicion. How is it possible? These two?! Hadn’t her mother always detested homosexuality? Furthermore, Meng Qingwu began to doubt her own “gay-dar.” If something was really going on between them, why had her radar never once beeped?
Though she desperately wanted to ask for clarification, seeing her mother’s grim face, she shut her mouth and decided not to meddle. Come to think of it, Ms. Meng hadn’t had a single romantic prospect since the divorce. If she could be with Lan Xining, perhaps it wasn’t a bad thing? They could keep each other company.
As for the “Auntie” title… her parents had been divorced for over twenty years, so it shouldn’t be an issue, right?
Seeing that Meng Qingwu didn’t pursue the topic, Meng Shuyu breathed a small sigh of relief. But looking at the woman opposite her, whose smile was growing more radiant, she found her more irritating than ever.
…
By evening, friends who heard about the accident gathered in the ward. Yuan Junjun started checking her over as soon as she entered, saying worriedly, “Are you okay? No broken bones?”
Meng Qingwu laughed and reassured her friends, “I’m fine, I’ll be discharged soon.”
Cui Lanyu and Jin Le looked apologetic. “If we hadn’t dragged you out for drinks, this wouldn’t have happened.”
Meng Qingwu smiled. “Did you drag me? I was the one who ordered the alcohol.”
Jin Le came to her side and took her hand, asking hesitantly, “Wasn’t Cheng Yi with you? Where is she?”
At the mention of Cheng Yi, the smile on Meng Qingwu’s face faded. “She transferred hospitals. I’m not sure about her injuries.” Jin Le looked at her expression and fell silent.
After chatting for a while, they left so Meng Qingwu could rest. Once they were gone, the two elders returned. Looking at the now-quiet room, Meng Shuyu asked, “Does it feel too lonely?”
Meng Qingwu shook her head. She had survived much lonelier times than this.
“It seems you’ve grown up,” Meng Shuyu said with a small smile.
“Mom, I’m twenty-five.”
“Qingwu, ignore her,” Lan Xining said, peeling an orange with a smile. “Maybe because she hasn’t spent much time with you, she thinks you’re still a little girl.”
Meng Shuyu: “…” Why is this woman’s tongue so sharp?
“Mom, you two should go back and rest. There are nurses here anyway,” Meng Qingwu said, starting to shoo them away as it got late.
“No,” Meng Shuyu refused. Naturally, Lan Xining refused as well.
Meng Qingwu looked at them. Her mother was fifty, and though she looked like she was in her thirties due to good maintenance, some things couldn’t be hidden. There were fine lines at the corners of her eyes.
“You’re not young anymore, don’t exhaust yourselves,” Meng Qingwu said, adding silently, Even if you stay here, you can’t really help with anything… Neither of them was the type to serve others; what use would they be in a hospital room?
Meng Shuyu: “…” Lan Xining stifled a laugh, feeling a bit of schadenfreude at Meng Shuyu being rejected by her own daughter.
Meng Shuyu shot her a sidelong glance, then said to Meng Qingwu, “Fine, we’ll head back. Get some rest.”
…
Lan Xining followed Meng Shuyu out of the ward. Outside, the city lights were beginning to glow. As Meng Shuyu opened her car door, Lan Xining seized the moment to slip into the passenger seat and turned to smile at her.
Meng Shuyu watched her with a cold sneer. “Miss Lan is quite agile. Aren’t you afraid of throwing out your back?”
Lan Xining shrugged. “This isn’t enough to hurt my back. After all, I’ve done far more difficult things in bed without getting hurt.”
Meng Shuyu: “…”
“It seems Miss Lan has a very colorful nightlife then,” Meng Shuyu said, starting the engine. “Please get out of the car and go enjoy it.”
“Isn’t my nightlife you?” Lan Xining leaned in, her fingertip tracing slowly along Meng Shuyu’s lips. “Are you jealous?”
Meng Shuyu’s eyes darkened. She turned to look at Lan Xining, who looked like a seductive fox in the cramped, dark cabin of the car. She sneered, “I didn’t realize Miss Lan’s skin was as thick as a city wall.”
Hearing the merciless words, Lan Xining let out a soft sigh. Her finger slid down from the lips to Meng Shuyu’s throat. “Meng Shuyu… even a chaser gets tired if there’s no response for too long.”
As she said this, her gaze met Meng Shuyu’s. She was exceptionally serious.
