My Dating Sim Just Got an Update - Chapter 59
With Sun Jia’s addiction broken and her injuries finally on the mend, everyone was in high spirits. Consequently, breakfast that morning tasted exceptionally good to everyone well, everyone except Mu Ning.
Although Mu Ning had told Ren Chenxi she would have several more bowls of congee, she hadn’t accounted for just how much the other girls could eat. By the time she had finished her first bowl—the one Chenxi had personally served her and which she had savored slowly with lingering nostalgia the others were already on their second or third.
When she finally stood up to get a refill, there were only about two bowls left in the pot. Just as she reached for the ladle, Wu Tong rushed over like a whirlwind, snatched the spoon right out of her hand, and said quite bluntly, “Boss, how are you still eating? Sun Jia is still weak! This last bit is for her!”
With that, Wu Tong scooped the remaining congee into a large mug and carried it off.
What do you mean, “still eating”? I only had one bowl!
Mu Ning’s face went cold. For a split second, she really wanted to send Wu Tong flying with a flick of her whip. But seeing how carefully Wu Tong was tending to Sun Jia, she could only swallow her irritation.
Aside from Mu Ning, everyone finished breakfast feeling satisfied and full. Even the boys in the neighboring building had cobbled together a pot of some sort of hodgepodge stew and seemed equally content.
After breakfast, Zhang Tongqi was eager to get going, suggesting they head out immediately to search the supermarket’s underground warehouse. Chenxi was also thinking about that warehouse, but she was mindful of the time; she had to pick up Huo Keyu and the others around noon. She added a condition: they had to be back at the base by 11:00 AM. Mu Ning guessed that Chenxi was in a hurry to meet someone and nodded in agreement.
“Our main goal today is to check if that supermarket has an underground warehouse. If it does, we’ll move as much as we can and then head straight back. If there’s nothing there…”
Before she could finish, Zhang Tongqi jumped in to interrupt her.
“Pah, pah, pah! Don’t jinx it, Boss! No bad luck! How could there be nothing? There’s definitely stuff in there!”
“…” Fine, have it your way.
For the excursion, they used the large bus again. Before leaving, they performed some “repairs.” These repairs essentially involved finding random wooden planks and stone slabs, fitting them into the shattered window frames, and having Tang Ying crystalize them.
Now that Tang Ying had reached Level 3, she could not only control the color of her crystals but also their purity. The planks and slabs became perfectly transparent—so clear that from a distance, they looked like ordinary glass. However, these “crystal windows” were far tougher than any glass.
Due to her physical condition, Sun Jia stayed behind. Wu Tong stayed to look after her, and Tantan was left behind as well.
Having finally reunited with its owner, Tantan naturally threw a tantrum, rolling around and demanding to go with Chenxi. Chenxi was an old pro at handling this. Before the apocalypse, Tantan used to pull the exact same routine whenever it was time for her to go to class. Her solution then was the same as it was now: first, peel a favorite snack; second, hold the cat and offer plenty of soft, soothing words; and third, promise to be back by noon to fix lunch and play with its toys.
Since she didn’t have any cat treats on hand, Chenxi pulled out a small piece of fresh wolf meat. While Tantan was busy hugging the meat with its paws and purring, she took a toy from her backpack, waved it around, and placed it nearby. After a few final hushed promises, she stood up to leave.
Tantan was very familiar with this routine. Even though it didn’t want her to go, it could only “meow” its goodbye. It had tried being stubborn to the bitter end before, but that usually resulted in Chenxi scruffing it by the neck and locking it in a room. Tantan was smart enough to know when to quit—if it pushed too hard, it would end up in “solitary confinement,” unable to run around freely, and there would be no playtime when its owner returned.
Mu Ning watched Chenxi’s practiced handling of the cat but said nothing. Zhang Tongqi, however, was amazed and asked how she knew exactly how to deal with a sulking Tantan.
Before Chenxi could answer, Mu Ning provided the explanation for her. “I assume Ren Muhui taught her, right?”
Chenxi felt there was a hidden layer to Mu Ning’s tone. But so what? She nodded calmly and spun a plausible lie. “When my brother was raising Tantan, he loved sharing his experiences with me. Over time, I heard it so often that I just knew how to handle the cat’s different moods.”
“…” Experience can be passed down and utilized that effectively?
Zhang Tongqi and the others were deeply impressed, even if they didn’t quite understand.
The bus had been fueled yesterday, and there was enough gas to get to the supermarket and back. To be safe, Chenxi used her five free daily draws on the road. She received three Grease Cards, one Outfit Change Card, and one R-tier Explosion Card. She still had the 150,000 crystals she’d earned; since she had nothing else to do on the drive, she decided to spend 50,000 crystals on ten “10-pulls.”
Thanks to her 50% off “Whale” membership, a 10-pull that usually cost 10,000 crystals now only cost her 5,000.
Since a 10-pull guaranteed at least one R-tier card or higher, her luck was quite good. From the ten sets, she gained six R-tier Explosion Cards, four R-tier Speed Cards, two R-tier Shapeshift Cards, one SR-tier Recovery Card, and one SR-tier Shield Card. The remaining 86 cards were all N-tier: 40 Grease Cards, 31 Flash Cards, 5 Outfit Change Cards, and 10 Pickpocket Cards.
Looking at the new haul in her inventory, Chenxi was pleasantly surprised. Is the drop rate for SR cards always this high for 10-pulls? She decided that from now on, she would only spend crystals on 10-pulls.
What she didn’t realize was that her “Golden 50% Membership” didn’t just offer a discount; it also came with a hidden perk: a significantly boosted drop rate for R-tier cards and above.
While Chenxi was busy drawing and synthesizing her cards, the bus had already traveled a good distance from the base. The students around her were buzzing with excitement, hoping the warehouse would be full of supplies. Chenxi, meanwhile, rested her chin on her hand and stared blankly out the window. She didn’t join the conversation, and the others, sensing her focus, didn’t dare disturb her.
In reality, she was secretly synthesizing her excess N-tier cards. She currently had nine R-tier Explosion Cards; one more, and she could synthesize two more SR Explosion Cards.
Among the N-tier cards, she decided to keep the Flash Cards (which were surprisingly useful) and the Grease Cards (which guaranteed a 6L bottle of universal gasoline upon hitting a low-level monster). That left the Outfit Change Cards and the Pickpocket Cards. She had seven Outfit Change Cards; without hesitation, she used five to synthesize an R-tier card, though she only got one R-tier Critical Strike Card.
She had thirteen Pickpocket Cards left, so she used ten for synthesis. To her, the Pickpocket Card wasn’t particularly useful. Most people in the base were just struggling survivors, and she didn’t feel right stealing from them—she might accidentally take someone’s life-saving medicine or last bit of food. However, “most people” didn’t include Fan Juntian!
Thinking about how Fan Juntian had tried to sabotage her before the apocalypse and how he had forced Sun Jia into addiction afterward, Chenxi felt no pity. According to Chen Gu, the man was practically a law unto himself in the base. Even the base leader, Qi Sheng, struggled to keep him in check. For a scumbag like that, she wouldn’t feel a shred of guilt using a Pickpocket Card. She decided to keep the last three for him.
The ten Pickpocket Cards first synthesized into a Position Swap Card, and luckily, the second attempt finally yielded an R-tier Explosion Card. With ten R-tier Explosion Cards now in hand, she synthesized them into two SR Explosion Cards. This brought her total to eight.
If she saved up for a few more days and completed more tasks, she could reach ten SR Explosion Cards. Then, she could synthesize them into two SSR Explosion Cards and head to the coast to hunt that Level 7 giant octopus. With her Invisibility Card, Shield Card, and various buffs like Speed and Critical Strike, she was confident she could at least escape safely even if she couldn’t kill it in one go.
“We’re here! We’re here!”
A loud cheer broke Chenxi’s concentration. The bus had arrived at the supermarket they had passed yesterday.
“Everyone, be careful,” Chen Gu warned seriously as they disembarked, drawing on his experience from previous field missions. “There are a lot of zombies gathered here, and we don’t know if there are mutated beasts lurking in the ruins. Do not wander off alone!”
The newcomers, having already witnessed the dangers of H-City, didn’t take his words lightly. Despite their excitement, they remained orderly and stayed close together. They waited for Chenxi to store the bus in her inventory before slowly moving toward the supermarket as a unified group.
