My Dating Sim Just Got an Update - Chapter 56
Once those annoying pests finally left, Ren Chenxi felt as though she could finally breathe a sigh of relief. Zhang Tongqi, however, still looked unsatisfied. She brandished her long, sharp nails at their retreating backs, but under Mu Ning’s warning gaze, she eventually had no choice but to retract her claws.
“Heh, were you actually planning to beat them up?” Chen Gu chuckled from the side. “Forget it, forget it~ The Boss won’t give them any more water, and that’s miserable enough for them. Imagine people who used to waste water like it was nothing suddenly having to scrimp and save. heh, just thinking about it makes them look pitiful~” Previously, Chen Gu’s biggest grievance was how those people leeched off the Boss; now that she had personally cut them off, he felt a weight had been lifted from his shoulders.
But Zhang Tongqi saw things differently.
“Pitiful my foot! You don’t know a damn thing!” Zhang Tongqi snapped, rolling her eyes at Chen Gu. Because Sun Jia had forbidden it, the boys were still in the dark about her poisoning. Mu Ning’s plan was to wait until Sun Jia’s addiction was fully broken and her wounds had healed before finding a way to get revenge on Fan Juntian.
Although the Fan family was practically on equal footing with the base leader in Nanhai, that didn’t mean Mu Ning’s team was willing to just take this lying down. This wasn’t a minor grievance; had Ren Chenxi not discovered the poison in time, no one dared imagine what would have happened to Sun Jia. In Zhang Tongqi’s heart, Fan Juntian’s insidious toxic smoke—which nearly cost Sun Jia her life—could only be repaid with his own!
Fan Juntian, his sycophants, and the group led by Dong Ting and Li Jie who caused Sun Jia’s injury all of them would pay.
Of course, making a move inside the base was difficult. Fortunately, Fan Juntian left the base several times a week. Some speculated they were searching for specific plants in the wild to manufacture more drugs. Those addicts were completely dependent now. For Mu Ning and her team, however, those excursions were the perfect opportunity for revenge.
The wasteland was chaotic; no one could guarantee Fan Juntian wouldn’t encounter some “unforeseen danger” in the wild. If he died outside the base, the Fan family wouldn’t even know where to begin an investigation. And once Fan Juntian was gone, those disgusting, parasitic “giant babies” would find life in the base becoming increasingly difficult. Perhaps, one day, they really would die of thirst!
While Zhang Tongqi sat there with gritted teeth, silently sketching out her revenge plot, Chen Gu nudged her, looking confused. “Hey! What is it that I don’t know?”
He was promptly met with another eye-roll. Chen Gu didn’t mind, though; he was in a great mood. He had a crystal core generator to play games on, and the leeches were gone for good. In his mind, Sister Xi was truly their lucky star~ Oh, right! Sister Xi also had the medicine that treated Sun Jia’s wounds!
Remembering the injury, Chen Gu chased after Zhang Tongqi. “By the way, how’s Sister Xi’s medicine working? Is Jiajia doing better?”
“The medicine was just applied! Do you think it’s a miracle elixir that shows results instantly?” Zhang Tongqi’s temper flared at the mention of Sun Jia. If the Boss hadn’t said the boys were too impulsive, why would they have to hide the truth? Looking at Chen Gu’s simple, honest face… yeah, he really was a liability. Even if he didn’t rush off to find Fan Juntian, his behavior would surely give something away.
Fine, fine. The Boss was right. Better to wait until Sun Jia was detoxed and healing before discussing the revenge plan with the boys.
Ignoring Chen Gu, Zhang Tongqi turned to ask Mu Ning what she wanted for dinner. Seeing he was being ignored, Chen Gu went back to hugging the generator and grinning like an idiot.
Ren Chenxi had originally intended for everyone to eat their own supplies, but when Zhang Tongqi warmly invited her for a simple meal of noodles, she thought of the large jars of pickled greens in her inventory. Recalling that sour, spicy flavor, she couldn’t help but suggest, “How about we make some simple pickled vegetable noodles?” She would provide the greens, and the girls could provide the rest; that way, she wouldn’t be taking advantage of them.
“Pickled vegetable noodles?” Zhang Tongqi blinked in surprise. “Sister Xi, we don’t have any pickled vegetables…” They grew cabbage, but there was no time to ferment it, nor did they have the seasonings to spare for pickling.
“Don’t worry, I do~” Ren Chenxi said, and with a heavy thud, a large jar of pickled greens appeared on the floor.
Amidst the girls’ delighted squeals and the sound of them swallowing their saliva, the dinner menu was settled.
That night, Ren Chenxi contentedly finished two bowls of pickled vegetable beef noodles. The steaming, sour, and crispy greens paired perfectly with the chewy handmade noodles prepared by Wu Tong and Zhang Tongqi. Despite having had a feast for lunch, the girls buried their faces in their bowls, slurping away with total devotion. Even though it was a common dish before the apocalypse, in their eyes, it was a supreme delicacy easily rivaling the noon meal.
In this world, even a fleeting taste of such flavors was enough to satisfy them. The newcomers who had arrived that day felt their hopes for life in the base grow significantly, bolstered by the luxury of lunch and the comfort of dinner.
“Meow, meow, meow~”
As Ren Chenxi reluctantly held her clean bowl, having finished every drop of soup, Tantan trotted over to her legs. He circled her, purring loudly while rubbing against her for attention. Before her own dinner, Ren Chenxi had carefully prepared goose eggs mixed with raw beef for him. Mu Ning provided the beef, while the eggs came from Ren Chenxi’s monster loot.
“Tantan~ Are you full too? Come here, let me feel your little belly~~”
The other girls, still finishing their noodles, watched Tantan act cute and spoiled around Ren Chenxi. Suddenly, they felt the “sour” taste of the noodles wasn’t just from the pickles—they were a little jealous of that cat.
Mu Ning felt the same way.
After dinner, Jian Dan and the girls from S University were still buzzing with energy. Perhaps it was the excitement of their first day or the back-to-back delicious meals, but they all crowded into the bathroom together to figure out how to decorate it and make the environment more comfortable.
Ren Chenxi, considering herself an “old soul,” didn’t have the boundless energy of the younger girls. She decided not to join the renovation project. Cradling Tantan, she gave Mu Ning a quick wave and headed up to her room on the third floor.
Mu Ning watched her leave, then glanced at the chattering girls in the newly lit bathroom. Finding no interest there, she turned and followed Ren Chenxi upstairs.
Ren Chenxi entered her dim room and walked slowly toward the center of the ceiling. She reached up and pulled the hanging cord the old-fashioned light switch. The pull-cord style felt a bit foreign to her, but what felt even more alien was the sparse room containing only a bed, a cat bed, and bare grey concrete walls.
It looked like she’d have to ask Tang Ying for some help decorating tomorrow.
Bending down, she carefully placed Tantan in his cat bed. She took off her jacket, stored it in her inventory, and climbed into bed. But a moment later, Tantan let out a few soft meows, purring and acting spoiled as he hopped onto the mattress. He expertly burrowed under the covers and curled up next to her pillow.
“Oh, Tantan… I really can’t say no to you~”
Though she feigned a complaint, Ren Chenxi habitually scooped the cat up and hugged him to her chest. Back before the apocalypse, when she first brought him home from the hospital, she had let him sleep by her pillow because she was worried about him. He had made it a habit ever since. During the day while she was at classes, he might nap in his own bed, but the moment she was home for the night, he’d jump right onto her bed. No matter how many times she tried to shoo him off, he simply wouldn’t listen.
Faced with a cat who knew exactly how to act cute to get his way, what choice did she have? She could only continue to spoil him.
She gently rubbed her chin against his small head, her voice slightly thick with emotion. “It’s so good to have you back by my side, Tantan~”
“Meow, meow, meow, meow~~~”
Holding the familiar, fluffy little “blanket,” Ren Chenxi thought she would fall asleep quickly. But perhaps because she had slept too much in the afternoon, she found herself wide awake. After playing with Tantan for a while, she habitually opened her backpack interface to do her daily check of her important items crystals, cards, and so on. Especially the crystals; she had a massive windfall today, and she needed to decide how to spend it.
With sleep out of reach, her excitement only grew, and her mind felt sharper.
With so many crystals, her first thought was naturally the gacha pulls. But before drawing, she had to check her current hand. She was out of N-rank “Oily” and “Flash” cards. She had one R-rank “Explosion” card left. Thanks to Mu Ning, she had completed the “Reunion” quest, which added five SR-rank “Explosion” cards and five SR-rank “Recovery” cards. She had used one recovery card on herself and one on Sun Jia, leaving her with three… Wait, why was there a new purple card sitting behind the recovery cards? She was certain she hadn’t spent any crystals to pull cards yet!
Ren Chenxi checked the information on the new card with confusion and was stunned to find it was an “Invisibility” card!
An invisibility card… suddenly, a memory clicked, and she hurriedly summoned her quest panel. If she recalled correctly, she had seen a quest in the “Daily Missions” yesterday that offered an SR Invisibility card as a reward!
