My Clingy Fiancée Is Forcing Me to Marry Her Again - Chapter 12
The Unspoken Word
“Why—”
If Guan Xiaoyu hadn’t been so infatuated; if Guan Xiaoyu had been a little more sensible and listened to her father’s advice; if Guan Xiaoyu hadn’t been such a crybaby—
All the hypothetical ‘ifs’ made Li Fangge feel powerless. “Why on earth do you absolutely refuse to break the engagement?”
It was a little like asking the obvious, but she didn’t think herself despicable.
Only by forcing Guan Xiaoyu to say the reason aloud and then denying it, would the chance of breaking the engagement increase.
“Sister Li, you know the answer.” Guan Xiaoyu instinctively curled her fingers into fists.
“I only know that we have no reason not to break the engagement—”
“We do!” Guan Xiaoyu interrupted her loudly, as if any rejection of their marriage contract would anger her. “If Sister wants to hear me say it myself, fine—”
Her face flushed slightly, and her long lashes trembled gently.
“I like you, Sister Li; we have an engagement; you once made a promise to me—” She suddenly paused here, taking a deep breath. Seeing Li Fangge unmoved, she blinked her long eyelashes and continued, “If these aren’t enough to withstand the obstacles and difficulties before us, then the fact that you have me in your heart is absolutely enough for me!”
“??!!!”
This delusion of the Scummy Alpha having her in her heart…
Did this delicate flower self-actualize this thought, too?!
No, my heart and eyes are completely empty. Absolutely not.
Following her failed attempt to refuse to sleep with Guan Xiaoyu last night, Li Fangge’s tongue was once again tied.
Why can’t I say it?
She panicked. Are there taboos concerning certain words used to reject Guan Xiaoyu? If so, what are the rules?
“Sister Li, since we are devoted to each other, what reason do we have to break the engagement?”
Li Fangge couldn’t utter a denial, and Guan Xiaoyu automatically took it as her default agreement.
“You know,” Li Fangge’s tongue finally recovered after a long spell of stammering, “we have no future together.”
She expected Guan Xiaoyu to cry upon hearing this, but Guan Xiaoyu was unexpectedly calm, as if she had already anticipated Li Fangge would say this.
She gazed quietly into Li Fangge’s eyes, as if seeking confirmation of the reason for her statement.
After a long while, she said, “If there is no future, then we will create one.”
Her tone remained clear and firm, as though she were deeply convinced, they would have a future.
“And what if we create one?” Li Fangge actually hated being so depressed and passive.
She had always been the type to actively forge ahead in life. By her nature, Guan Xiaoyu’s “If there is no future, then we will create one” was more her own style.
But compared to staying alive, what could love possibly be worth?
“I don’t have that ability.”
“Leave it to me.”
“I—”
I truly don’t have you in my heart.
Li Fangge tried again. As the second half of the sentence reached her throat, her tongue felt as though it were being held down firmly.
The words she wanted to say ultimately became, “I just don’t want us to struggle so much.”
What a nonsensical thing to say. Isn’t this just indirectly boosting the delicate flower’s morale?
“As long as I’m with you, Sister, I won’t feel like I’m struggling at all. Could it be, Sister Li…?”
“I—” want to break the engagement. Again?! Li Fangge bit her own tongue, but even the pain was absent.
“Have it your way.” She strived for cold indifference, hoping Guan Xiaoyu would understand that the so-called mutual devotion was merely wishful thinking on her part.
As expected, Guan Xiaoyu understood her gaze. “Sister Li, I don’t like you invalidating yourself, or us.”
“You should go back now.”
Li Fangge no longer wanted to continue the topic. After all, the crucial words she wanted to say still couldn’t be spoken.
“I don’t want to go home, anywhere is fine. Can you accompany me, Sister Li?”
“No, a crowd of creditors will block me the moment I step outside.”
Li Fangge was too lazy to hide it.
She could speak so calmly about something so humiliating in front of Guan Xiaoyu. She truly had no intention of saving her image in front of her.
“That’s so hard.” Guan Xiaoyu’s tone was filled with genuine concern.
“I’m used to it.”
Li Fangge shrugged and turned to walk toward the door.
In truth, she hadn’t left the house in the past few days. The information about a crowd of creditors blocking her the moment she stepped out was merely what she had learned from the Scummy Alpha’s memories.
“Sister Li, there’s been a question that’s troubled me for a long time—”
Guan Xiaoyu followed behind and to her left. “May I ask it?”
“If I didn’t let you ask, would you not ask?”
“No.”
“Ask.”
“For the past few years, you’ve always ignored me and refused to see me. I was very disheartened. Can you tell me why?”
Why ask the obvious slid to the tip of Li Fangge’s tongue—
This time, Li Fangge herself held back.
This was true karma; she had just asked the delicate flower the obvious.
She understood the feeling perfectly: knowing the answer in your heart, but still hoping for the other person to say it aloud.
“I’m not worthy—” not worthy to marry you.
Self-deprecation was unprecedented behavior for Li Fangge.
Yet today, for the sake of breaking the engagement, she was resorting to every means possible.
It was just that the critical words still couldn’t be spoken. Heh!
“I don’t like you invalidating yourself!” Guan Xiaoyu repeated, her tone heavy.
Li Fangge turned her head to the left.
Guan Xiaoyu clearly felt her gaze, but instead of meeting it as usual, she looked at the distant white roses that were still blooming.
She understood Li Fangge’s meaning perfectly. Because I don’t want to accept it, I choose to ignore it.
“I don’t like saying this about myself either, but it’s the truth.”
“Sister Li, do you really think gene ranking is that important?”
Guan Xiaoyu turned to look at Li Fangge, her tone so severe that it startled her.
The accusation and disapproval in the delicate flower’s voice made her feel guilty.
Li Fangge wanted to curse: F*** the gene ranking!
But for every world to function, there are always some immutable laws.
You can disagree, you can disapprove, but reality is reality.
She averted her gaze, walking forward on her own, and said with her back to her, “One thing about it is very important, and that is I want to live a little easier.”
“Are you saying that being with me is a great burden to you?”
Realizing Guan Xiaoyu’s voice was getting further away, Li Fangge looked back to find she hadn’t followed.
At some point, her face had become so pale.
When the color drained from her face, the delicate flower looked so frail, like a paper figure that even a slight breeze could harm.
Li Fangge knew this was not the time for compassion. She wanted to nod, to say yes, but both attempts failed.
Guan Xiaoyu, however, had no intention of letting her go. “Answer me, Sister Li!”
If, if she received an affirmative answer, Li Fangge knew that Guan Xiaoyu would not come looking for her again after leaving this house.
The moment this realization occurred, a sudden, inexplicable panic exploded in her heart.
“I already told you I’m not worthy. What more do you want from me?”
Looking at Guan Xiaoyu’s deathly pale small face, Li Fangge’s heart ached uncontrollably. Denying herself over and over again was making her extremely uncomfortable.
She hadn’t intended to say any of this today, but their conversation kept pushing her into such a context.
“If what you’re referring to is just our engagement, then—isn’t the question of whether you’re worthy or not something only I, the one who is married to you, have the right to speak about?”
Guan Xiaoyu must be incredibly sad, reaching the extreme of her sadness.
Li Fangge saw a layer of frost covering her bright red lips, which made her feel even worse.
She didn’t smell the scent of orange blossoms, but an impulse to pull Guan Xiaoyu into her embrace welled up.
She shouldn’t torture her like this. She was a pea-princess raised in an environment full of love and care.
“If you say so, then so be it.”
Under Guan Xiaoyu’s gaze, Li Fangge surrendered. She could no longer say anything that contradicted her opinion.
For the rest of the walk, all conversation between the two was lost.
It wasn’t until she opened the side door that Li Fangge belatedly remembered she could have simply asked Guan Xiaoyu’s driver to bring the car into the courtyard.
If Hong Tao had driven the car in, they wouldn’t have had that uncomfortable conversation on the way out—
As they walked out, one after the other, a massive sound of shattering glass suddenly came from nearby.
The exact location of the broken glass was unclear, but the loud sound and the scattering of fragments scared Guan Xiaoyu, who instantly grabbed Li Fangge beside her and buried her head against her.
Li Fangge did not push her away. Almost instinctively, she reached up and covered Guan Xiaoyu’s ears.
They didn’t hear it:
Nearby, a violent man was standing among the glass fragments, raging: “Are they definitely going to break the engagement just like that?!”
