- Chapter 40 - The Kiss
This wild and passionate kiss lasted for several minutes.
The most unexplainable thing in the world through simple theory is the ever-changing human heart.
Just a moment ago, Zhang Linen was lost and distraught because of Ji Zeyuan’s cold indifference; now, she had calmed down because of a phone call from an unfamiliar person.
After letting out a heavy sigh, she collapsed straight onto the ground.
“You said before that helping me came with conditions, so… this counts as us being even.”
Zhang Linen did not answer. Her breastbone ached terribly, and after learning of Ji Zeyuan’s whereabouts, she didn’t want to say a single word.
Not long after, two “beep-beep” sounds came from the phone as the call was disconnected.
Ji Zeyuan lay on the sofa at Hua Jianjiu’s house until eleven in the morning. Suddenly, as if seized by a nightmare, she sat up abruptly, muttering to herself, “I have to go back.”
Hua Jianjiu had already gone to work, and no one was home. She put on her shoes, took her car keys, and left silently.
There were dozens of missed calls from Zhang Linen on her phone. Ji Zeyuan called back, but Zhang Linen did not answer.
Then she called Ji Cheng. The phone rang once before being picked up, followed by Ji Cheng’s questioning voice on the other end.
“Why didn’t you come to the press conference?”
Ji Zeyuan didn’t explain, asking instead, “Where is Linen? Is she still there?”
“Do you know the impact of this matter—”
Before Ji Cheng could finish, Ji Zeyuan hung up the phone.
Everything was too sudden; she was truly too confused.
Because she had snuck out of the main residence, she wasn’t driving her usual car. It didn’t handle familiarly, and she almost grazed another vehicle on the road, earning herself a middle finger from someone.
Faced with such a world-view-shattering accident, Ji Zeyuan habitually chose to escape. For a moment, she even forgot that she had just made up her mind to compensate for the eight years of harm she had caused Zhang Linen.
Everything had come to light: Zhang Linen was not her biological sister. Those eight years of restraint and endurance were nothing but a non-existent joke.
The blood relation was fake; only the bone-deep pain was real.
The traffic light turned red. Ji Zeyuan braked, her gaze blankly staring into the distance.
What they said online wasn’t wrong; she was a scoundrel—a scoundrel who had stolen someone else’s best years without even knowing it.
So, even though Ji Cheng promised her that everything would remain as usual and she would still be the first-in-line heir of Jixia, she still didn’t go to the press conference.
Or to put it more accurately, it was precisely because Ji Cheng made such a promise that she was unwilling to go.
However, the main reason was that she didn’t know how to face Zhang Linen.
The sound of the car behind her honking woke her from her myriad thoughts. She snapped back to reality and suddenly realized she had no idea where to go, so she drove through the green light and pulled the car over to the side of the road.
After stopping the car, Ji Zeyuan dialed Zhang Linen’s number once more.
Cars came and went on the asphalt road, creating a chaotic din.
Ji Zeyuan rested her forehead against the steering wheel, staring intently at the contact name on the phone screen, her eyes stinging.
The ringtone had sounded nine times. Ji Zeyuan’s heart gradually sank. Just when she thought this call would also end in an automatic disconnection, it was picked up at the very last second.
“Linen, I’m sorry. I didn’t go to the press conference, and I kept ignoring your calls.” As soon as the call connected, Ji Zeyuan began to apologize uncontrollably. But the other end of the line was quiet, without a single sound.
After a moment, an unexpected stranger’s voice spoke: “Uh, sorry, I’m not the owner of this phone. The screen is broken, and it was left on the ground ringing constantly.”
A chill ran through Ji Zeyuan’s heart. She hung up the phone and sat in the driver’s seat thinking silently for a long time before starting the car and heading toward the company.
Due to the explosive news that broke today, everyone who saw Ji Zeyuan appearing at the company was collectively stunned.
Ji Zeyuan ignored the dumbfounded looks of the crowd and walked straight to the front desk, slapping her hand on the counter and asking urgently, “Is Secretary Zhang here?”
The receptionist nodded with a dazed expression and said, “She… she came to pack her things and just left… ah, she’s back.”
Ji Zeyuan’s emotions surged and plummeted, coming to a dead stop the moment she heard the last sentence. She followed the receptionist’s gaze and looked back. Zhang Linen, dressed in formal attire, was standing right behind her.
Everyone present watched the scene with expressions of people “eating melons” (spectators watching drama). Ji Zeyuan breathed a sigh of relief and stepped forward. Her first instinct was to hug her, but as she got closer, she suddenly remembered their current awkward relationship and forced her reaching arms back behind her.
Zhang Linen had originally come back to retrieve a document she left upstairs. She hadn’t expected Ji Zeyuan to appear here.
The two of them stood facing each other awkwardly in the lobby, each with their own heavy thoughts. The surrounding gazes felt like countless cameras, stifling them into silence.
“Let’s go somewhere else to talk,” Ji Zeyuan spoke first to break the suffocating atmosphere. Zhang Linen nodded slightly, and they went together to the nearest empty meeting room.
After entering, Ji Zeyuan locked both the front and back doors first. Zhang Linen silently took a seat in the front row, thinking about what to say.
Ji Zeyuan sat down beside Zhang Linen. She was still a bit dazed by the current situation. Even the simple action of sitting down was stiff, and her elbow accidentally hit the corner of the table.
Zhang Linen was the same, perhaps even worse. She kept her head lowered, her throat feeling as though someone were squeezing it, making it impossible to produce a sound.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t answer your calls. I was too confused at the time, so…” Ji Zeyuan hesitated. She paused and then continued, “In any case, I won’t do that again. I’m sorry.”
When she couldn’t find Ji Zeyuan, Zhang Linen was frantic with worry. Now that Ji Zeyuan was right beside her, she didn’t know what to say.
Zhang Linen struggled to deliberate on what words to use to face Ji Zeyuan. After a while, she turned her face, her lips twitching: “Will you leave? Like you did before.”
Only the sound of their erratic breathing could be heard in the empty meeting room.
Ji Zeyuan said word by word: “No, I won’t do that anymore.”
Zhang Linen stared at her fixedly for a few seconds before shifting her gaze elsewhere. Her voice sounded somewhat ethereal in the large room: “Then… let it be like this.”
This was enough.
Zhang Linen stood up silently to leave. Ji Zeyuan followed suit and asked, “Are you still going back today?”
Before Zhang Linen could answer, Ji Zeyuan’s phone rang inopportunely. She instinctively wanted to hang up, but saw it was a call from Ji Cheng.
Seeing her hesitation, Zhang Linen said, “Answer it first. I’ll wait for you.”
Ji Zeyuan looked at her and then took the call.
“Are you and Linen both at the headquarters? Just right, come back together now.”
It didn’t require much thought; someone at the company must have reported to Ji Cheng.
Ji Cheng probably wanted her to return to discuss the change of heir and the transfer of the equity under her name. Ji Zeyuan didn’t think much of it and agreed.
Finally being able to return things that didn’t belong to her to their rightful owner made the burden on Ji Zeyuan’s heart feel a bit lighter.
“Father wants us to go back. Let’s go,” Ji Zeyuan said after hanging up. Zhang Linen didn’t have much of a reaction and simply nodded silently.
The two walked out of the meeting room together. The people eavesdropping outside immediately pretended to be very busy as they passed by, their acting skills quite poor.
Walking to the entrance, both instinctively reached for their own cars, their hands holding keys pausing simultaneously.
“Let’s take my car,” Ji Zeyuan said. Zhang Linen nodded and silently put her keys back in her pocket.
Ji Zeyuan didn’t bring a driver and was going to drive herself. She sat in the driver’s seat and looked out at the open road ahead, but her state of mind felt strange.
Zhang Linen is not her sister, so… is it okay to cross the line a little?
As Ji Zeyuan thought this, Zhang Linen sat in the passenger seat. She had maintained a single expression all day; if one had to use a word to describe it, it was “wooden as a chicken” (dumbstruck).
It seemed this matter had a massive impact on Zhang Linen as well. Ji Zeyuan buckled her seatbelt and turned to look at Zhang Linen. Zhang Linen was still sitting there motionless, her seatbelt unfastened.
An old cliché plot suddenly surfaced in Ji Zeyuan’s mind. Her heart stirred, and she imitated the protagonist of an old TV drama, leaning over to fasten the seatbelt for Zhang Linen.
Zhang Linen’s eyes, which had been dull and vacant just a moment ago, brightened. With Ji Zeyuan so close at hand, her heart accelerated its beating.
Only after practicing it did she realize why those protagonists would blush so much from shyness.
Ji Zeyuan reached for the passenger seatbelt. Her body was almost pressed against Zhang Linen’s face, and she could even feel Zhang Linen’s hot breath through the thin fabric.
She pulled the belt and clicked the buckle into place. The moment she looked up, her gaze collided with Zhang Linen’s. There seemed to be a sense of reluctance in Zhang Linen’s eyes, but after freezing for two seconds, she turned her face away.
Zhang Linen’s pale, thin chin was slightly tilted. Ji Zeyuan’s hand was still gripping the seatbelt. Her throat bobbed, and she suddenly made a move she hadn’t even anticipated herself.
Ji Zeyuan leaned forward and kissed Zhang Linen on the cheek.
Cars flowed incessantly on the road, and Ji Zeyuan’s ears were filled with the sound of the whistling wind.
Zhang Linen’s pupils vibrated. After a moment, she slowly turned her face to look at Ji Zeyuan.
This instinctive, rule-breaking act opened a hidden valve in Ji Zeyuan’s heart. She rubbed her fingertips and said in a low voice, “Can we still be as good as before?”
Zhang Linen maintained her startled expression and did not speak.
Ji Zeyuan watched Zhang Linen with a cautious, searching gaze. After a long time, Zhang Linen’s brain finally rebooted. She met Ji Zeyuan’s eyes and mechanically uttered a single word: “Mm.”
Zhang Linen’s gaze drifted subtly over Ji Zeyuan’s lips. Her pheromones sent out a signal of happiness.
She could feel from Ji Zeyuan’s pheromones that although Ji Zeyuan was nervous and her heart rate was chaotic, overall, she was happy.
This feeling was like…
Zhang Linen pursed her lips, hesitating repeatedly before wanting to test Ji Zeyuan.
“We’re both adults. Isn’t it a bit childish to only kiss the cheek?”
Zhang Linen’s throat was suddenly dry, her tone stiff like a middle schooler in their first love imitating a TV drama lead.
She didn’t hold much hope, but the reality gave her the best feedback.
Ji Zeyuan’s eyelashes fluttered. Her amber eyes glanced at Zhang Linen’s lips and then met her eyes again, seemingly seeking her consent.
But without waiting for Zhang Linen to give any signal of “okay,” Ji Zeyuan couldn’t hold back. She tilted her neck slightly and pressed in, her thin lips falling onto Zhang Linen’s cherry lips.
In that instant, Ji Zeyuan forgot to breathe. After pressing together for over ten seconds, she reluctantly left those moist lips and took a sharp, deep breath.
Zhang Linen wasn’t as green and flustered as she was. Her breathing remained steady as she looked straight at Ji Zeyuan, her heart filled with doubt, still unable to adapt to her sudden transformation.
“Let’s… let’s go.” After a while, Ji Zeyuan retracted her flickering gaze and sat back properly in her seat.
Zhang Linen nodded dazed. Ji Zeyuan held the car key, her gaze drifting, delaying inserting it. Suddenly, she threw the key into the armrest box and turned back to Zhang Linen, blurting out: “One… one more kiss.”
Because she was too nervous and excited, Ji Zeyuan accidentally bit her tongue. It hurt so much her eyes turned red.
Zhang Linen stared at Ji Zeyuan blankly. Before she could even nod, Ji Zeyuan impatiently leaned over and pressed against her.
This time, Zhang Linen was no longer like a piece of wood just touching lips. When Ji Zeyuan’s kiss fell, she tentatively stuck out the tip of her tongue and gave a light lick.
Ji Zeyuan’s body shook as if struck by an electric shock, but she didn’t let go of Zhang Linen. Instead, she likewise opened her mouth and extended her tongue.
However, neither of them had any experience, and everything went far from smoothly.
Ji Zeyuan probed her tongue into Zhang Linen’s mouth. Her right hand forcefully gripped the back of the passenger seat, trying to adjust her angle slightly, but she accidentally bumped into Zhang Linen’s teeth, cutting the corner of her own lip.
“Mmh…” Ji Zeyuan groaned from the pain. She backed away, wanting to catch her breath.
Zhang Linen was deeply immersed in the kiss. Without waiting for Ji Zeyuan to get ready, she proactively leaned over, wanting to continue. But the seatbelt strapped across her body restricted her, and she fell heavily back into the seat.
“Are you okay?” Ji Zeyuan asked worriedly, her tone urgent. Zhang Linen was shaking with excitement; she tremblingly used brute force to yank off the bothersome seatbelt.
“I’m fine.” Gasping for air, Zhang Linen rose and pressed over directly. She roughly pinned Ji Zeyuan back into the driver’s seat. Before Ji Zeyuan could react, her body tilted back sharply and hit the window.
The posture was incredibly awkward. The back of Ji Zeyuan’s neck ached from being pressed against the door, but Zhang Linen had already impatiently kissed her. Her lips and tongue invaded Ji Zeyuan’s mouth overbearingly, as if she wanted to tear Ji Zeyuan apart and devour her whole.
Ji Zeyuan was smothered by Zhang Linen until she couldn’t breathe. Her body had lost its balance. In her panic, she grabbed the driver’s seatbelt to find a shred of security amidst this uncontrollable chaos.
This wild and passionate kiss lasted for several minutes. Suddenly, Zhang Linen took off her own jacket.
Ji Zeyuan was kissed into a dizzying daze. It wasn’t until Zhang Linen started tugging at the buttons of her clothes that she suddenly snapped to her senses and hurriedly pinned down Zhang Linen’s hand.
“Wait… wait a second. What are you doing?”
