My Brother's Arranged Marriage Partner Is My Boyfriend - Chapter 61
The phone rang incessantly like an urgent summons. Seeing that Bai Nanxing made no move to answer, Yan Mo asked if it was Mo Leyang calling.
But Bai Nanxing shook his head, denying it. “No.”
Then it wasn’t Mo Leyang.
“Star baby, who is it then?” Yan Mo asked curiously.
Having lived with Bai Nanxing for over half a year, he was quite familiar with the people who usually called him—either persistent pursuers from school or people from the bar where Bai Nanxing worked part-time.
But today was clearly an exception.
Bai Nanxing’s reaction was slow; he even seemed to be debating whether or not to answer, which meant the caller wasn’t one of the usual acquaintances.
“It’s Mo Yichen,” Bai Nanxing said truthfully.
Yan Mo let out an “Ah,” and it slowly clicked. “The Senior’s older brother… why is he calling you this late?”
Bai Nanxing shook his head, unsure of the reason. Mo Yichen had called at almost this exact same time the previous night as well.
“Do you need me to step out?” Yan Mo asked.
Bai Nanxing felt it wasn’t necessary. “It’s fine.”
He pressed the answer button in front of Yan Mo, but the voice that came through the phone was a female one.
“Sister-in-law, are you free right now?”
Bai Nanxing recognized the voice immediately. “Qingqing? What’s wrong? Did something happen to Brother Chen?”
Mo Qingqing hesitated, seemingly at a loss for words. She squeezed out a few stuttering syllables, but her voice was as faint as a mosquito’s buzz; Bai Nanxing couldn’t hear her clearly at all.
“Did something happen to Brother Chen?” Bai Nanxing asked again.
“No, no!” Mo Qingqing immediately denied it. “Brother is perfectly fine! Sister-in-law, please don’t overthink it!”
Yan Mo thought to himself: If you hadn’t said that, people might not have cared, but saying it like that makes it hard not to worry.
Unsurprisingly, after hearing this, Bai Nanxing pressed further: “If nothing were really wrong, you wouldn’t have gone out of your way to call me using Brother Chen’s phone, would you?”
Caught in the truth, Mo Qingqing’s throat seemed to seize up, and she fell silent, letting the call hang in a heavy pause.
One of the things Bai Nanxing disliked most was when the person on the other end of a call dragged their feet without responding. He didn’t know why Mo Qingqing was doing this—or if it was something Mo Yichen had instructed her to do.
Regardless of the reason, Bai Nanxing didn’t have much patience to wait indefinitely, so he followed up: “Did Brother Chen ask you to call me?”
Mo Qingqing was only eighteen and had been well-protected her whole life; she didn’t know how to hide things. Under Bai Nanxing’s questioning, she confessed everything. “Um… yes, he asked me to call you.”
“Then why did he want you to call? Is something the matter?” Worried that his firm questioning might make her feel guilty, Bai Nanxing softened his tone. “Just tell me directly, don’t worry about me.”
After another long moment of hesitation, Mo Qingqing finally spoke. “Brother asked me to call and ask if… if you’re free today? If you are, could you come to the hotel to pick him up? Brother didn’t mean to trouble you, it’s… it’s because Uncle Chen was suddenly called away by Dad. He asked me to come get him, but I haven’t even passed my Level 2 driving test yet and can’t drive on the road. Then… then Brother thought of you.”
“Does Brother Chen have a drinking engagement today?”
“Yes… yes!”
The lie was a bit clumsy, but since it was Mo Yichen’s request, it was impossible for him not to go.
Perhaps Mo Yichen was standing right behind Mo Qingqing at this very moment, listening to his decision.
Bai Nanxing understood the situation. “Alright, wait for me a bit.”
Mo Qingqing seemed to breathe a sigh of relief; her audible exhale came through the phone, and her tone became much lighter.
“Then, Sister-in-law, I’ll send you the address now. Give me a call when you arrive!”
“Okay.”
After hanging up, Yan Mo asked, “Are you really going out to pick up his big brother?”
Bai Nanxing gave a bitter smile. “What else can I do? Sit here and wait for him to come and kill me?”
The members of the Mo family all shared the same temperament—threatening people at the drop of a hat like seasoned neurotics. If one didn’t know better, they’d think they were patients who had escaped from an asylum.
Bai Nanxing could only pick up his coat and put it back on. He told Yan Mo to remember to leave the door unlocked for him, then hurried downstairs to catch a taxi outside the school gates.
The nighttime temperature was very low, nearing the frigid cold of winter, with a biting wind whistling past that made one shiver.
Fortunately, Bai Nanxing had been wearing a warm sweater under his coat when he left the hotel earlier. Now, aside from his ears and face stinging slightly from the cold, the rest of his body remained warm.
After standing and waiting for a short while, a taxi finally passed by the school road.
Bai Nanxing quickly waved it down.
About half an hour later, Bai Nanxing arrived at the hotel address Mo Qingqing had sent.
He initially intended to call Mo Qingqing to tell her he was at the hotel entrance, but just as he was about to dial the original number back, he received a message from her.
[Mo Qingqing: Sorry Sister-in-law, a classmate just called saying there’s an emergency, so I’ll have to trouble you with Brother (kneeling emoji).]
Just as he expected.
Bai Nanxing didn’t blame her. He sent a quick “it’s fine” and headed inside.
Mo Yichen must have made arrangements in advance because as soon as Bai Nanxing walked in, a front desk clerk approached him.
“Are you Master Bai Nanxing?”
Bai Nanxing nodded. “I am.”
The clerk continued, “It’s like this: Miss Fifth asked me to pass a message to you. She had an urgent matter and had to leave. If you are here to see someone, she asked me to give you the room card.”
With that, the clerk handed a black-gold room card to Bai Nanxing.
The clerk then asked politely, “Master Nanxing, would you like me to show you up?”
Bai Nanxing declined. He was almost a sophomore in college now, not a three-year-old who would get lost. “Thank you, I can go up by myself.”
Mo Yichen’s room was on the eighth floor.
When he arrived, Bai Nanxing didn’t use the card to enter immediately. Instead, he raised his hand and knocked gently on the door.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.
Even by the fifth knock, there was no movement from inside.
Bai Nanxing thought his guess shouldn’t have been wrong.
However, the lack of any response made him feel as though he might have been mistaken.
Could it be that Mo Yichen really had a drinking engagement today?
Bai Nanxing slowly opened the door with the card. The moment he pushed it open, the pungent smell of alcohol hit him, forcing him to knit his brows.
However, the main reason for his frown wasn’t that he disliked the smell—he had drunk quite a bit while accompanying clients and was relatively used to it. The primary reason was that he had actually guessed wrong this time.
But then again, it wasn’t entirely wrong. Mo Qingqing had indeed called him at Mo Yichen’s behest. As for why Mo Yichen insisted he come pick him up, that was likely the reason Mo Qingqing had lied.
Bai Nanxing closed the door behind him and flicked on the light.
He walked slowly further into the room; the closer he got to the interior, the stronger the scent of alcohol became.
After a few more steps, Bai Nanxing saw Mo Yichen lying motionless on the large bed.
He seemed to be murmuring something softly.
Perhaps he was dreaming of something happy while intoxicated, as a faint smile hung on his face.
Bai Nanxing walked over cautiously and thoughtfully pulled the quilt over Mo Yichen. Although the air conditioning was on, the human body is fragile and one could easily catch a cold.
So, how was he supposed to get Mo Yichen home now?
Should he call that pervert Mo Leyang to come and help?
Better not. That pervert would probably rather kill Mo Yichen directly.
Moreover, if Mo Leyang found out he had come alone to pick up a drunken Mo Yichen, he would surely go crazy again.
He might even use it as an excuse to torment him to death.
After thinking it over, Bai Nanxing decisively abandoned that idea.
“Brother Chen,” Bai Nanxing tried calling out.
Mo Yichen didn’t respond.
The sound of steady breathing was exceptionally clear in the room; he seemed to be sleeping very deeply.
Bai Nanxing was at a loss. He wasn’t as strong as Mo Yichen, nor was he as tall. To actually get him home, he couldn’t do it alone.
But he didn’t have the contact information for any other members of the Mo family. The only one he had was a perverted madman whose mental state was severely concerning—if let loose, he was like a rabid dog that wanted to bite everyone to death.
“Brother Chen,” Bai Nanxing tried calling again.
But Mo Yichen still gave no reaction, only rolling over once before falling back into a deep stupor.
Having no other choice, Bai Nanxing turned around and picked up his phone to ask Mo Leyang.
But just as he tapped the screen, a large hand suddenly reached out from behind and stopped him.
Bai Nanxing froze on the spot.
Then, he heard a voice behind him, laced with a hint of intoxication: “Don’t call. I’m not drunk.”
Bai Nanxing slowly put his phone down and turned around. He found that Mo Yichen hadn’t let go of his hand; when he tried to pull away, Mo Yichen only gripped tighter.
“Brother Chen…”
“Qingqing made you come, didn’t she?”
Mo Yichen murmured in a low voice: “Ignore that little girl. She doesn’t understand anything and just likes to act on her own. Don’t take it to heart.”
Bai Nanxing thought to himself that he wouldn’t dare, but he still said the words he didn’t mean: “Don’t worry, Brother Chen, I won’t.”
Mo Yichen didn’t seem to believe him and added: “I originally wanted her to help call Uncle Chen, I didn’t expect her to call you directly. Sorry, it’s all my fault. Can you forgive her for my sake?”
Since he put it that way, it was even more impossible for Bai Nanxing to have any objections. Smiling, Bai Nanxing said, “Brother Chen, I really don’t blame her.”
Only then did Mo Yichen stop.
However, he showed no intention of letting go of Bai Nanxing’s hand. In an instant, the air became thick with an ambiguous atmosphere.
