- Chapter 8 - A Beauty Like a Flower Beyond the Clouds
After a few rustling sounds, the lounge became quiet.
Ji Tan held onto Zhou Wenbai’s shoulders, looking around. Zhou Wenbai lowered his head to kiss the bridge of Ji Tan’s nose, then gently pecked at his lips, which were reddened from their friction. The intimacy that had been interrupted naturally resumed under Zhou Wenbai’s guidance.
Zhou Wenbai pressed one hand against Ji Tan’s slender back, while the other cupped his soft thighs, pulling him closer. Zhou Wenbai’s lips were soft and his movements gentle, his affectionate expression revealing how much he cherished Ji Tan. Ji Tan had the right to call a halt at any time, but he cooperated, parting his lips to welcome Zhou Wenbai.
“Where did the little pearls inside Tuan Tuan’s mouth go?” Zhou Wenbai’s refined voice took on a mesmerizing, husky quality as he teased his little lover. “Why can I not find them?”
Zhou Wenbai’s kisses fell in a dense shower, and Ji Tan’s sensitive nerves drowned in the warm water, suddenly overcome by a feeling of uncontrolled disorientation. Ji Tan’s slender, soft fingers unconsciously gripped the tie knotted around Zhou Wenbai’s neck, his knuckles pressing against Zhou Wenbai’s slightly bobbing Adam’s apple, like a young predator biting the throat of its prey. As the tie tightened, the movement of Zhou Wenbai’s Adam’s apple diminished.
Ji Tan’s gaze was clear, watching unblinkingly at how lovingly Zhou Wenbai kissed him, though his quiet, glass-like pupils seemed unable to reflect any shadow.
“Tuan Tuan’s little tongue is so hot.” Zhou Wenbai gave one final suck on the tip of Ji Tan’s tongue before slowly ending the kiss. He covered Ji Tan’s hand, which was still clutching his tie, and as if he had not seen the lack of emotion in Ji Tan’s light-colored eyes, he deliberately wrinkled his nose. “You have scorched Dr. Zhou’s mouth.”
Zhou Wenbai gently took Ji Tan’s hand, rubbing his fingertips, which had turned pale from the force. The tie that had been choking Zhou Wenbai suddenly loosened, allowing his lungs to breathe again. Despite these intense physical changes, Zhou Wenbai’s expression remained unchanged. Every action and every look remained completely composed.
Only then did Ji Tan seem to come to his senses. He blinked, and clear, round tears fell from his eyes.
“Dr. Zhou, I am sick,” Ji Tan said, hugging Zhou Wenbai aggrievedly. “It is only hot because I have a high fever.”
Zhou Wenbai naturally stroked Ji Tan’s small, curly hair and leaned over to nuzzle his soft, tear-stained cheek. “Hmm, you poor thing.”
Ji Tan also felt incredibly pitiful, tearfully holding up his hand, which was bruised and purple from the IV needle, to show Zhou Wenbai. Zhou Wenbai caught Ji Tan’s hand, and the two of them, as if plotting a matter of national importance, carefully and meticulously examined the needle prick on the back of his hand. Zhou Wenbai tenderly kissed the abused hand and pulled Ji Tan into his arms to kiss his face. “My Tuan Tuan has suffered so much.”
Ji Tan was mollified by Zhou Wenbai’s meticulous soothing. He sniffled, ending the crying session.
“Let us see what good food Zhou She made for our Tuan Tuan.” Zhou Wenbai opened the insulated container left by Zhou She, taking out a plate of alfalfa salad and a plate of bok choy. The century egg and lean meat porridge at the bottom was still steaming.
“What is this?” Ji Tan had never seen alfalfa. “Is it grass?”
Zhou Wenbai stirred the piping hot porridge with a spoon, blew on a spoonful to cool it, and fed it to Ji Tan. He glanced at the plate and replied, “Alfalfa. It is what sheep like to eat…” He stopped abruptly, glancing at Ji Tan’s curly hair.
Ji Tan swallowed the porridge and tilted his head in confusion. “Sheep like to eat it the most?” He chewed on the spoon, and the vibrations traveled through the spoon handle to Zhou Wenbai’s fingers.
Zhou Wenbai suddenly chuckled. “Zhou She is truly malicious.”
Although he did not understand why Zhou Wenbai said this, Ji Tan agreed with a nod and complained, “He said he was going to beat me to death.”
“He would not.” Zhou Wenbai fed Ji Tan a chopstick full of alfalfa, leaned in to press his forehead against Ji Tan’s, and looked into his clear amber eyes, whispering teasingly, “Ancestral servants are still very useful.”
Ji Tan ate the fresh, smooth alfalfa, not quite understanding Zhou Wenbai’s meaning. There was a knock on the lounge door.
Zhou Wenbai returned to his seat. “Come in.”
Ji Tan thought Zhou She had returned, so he quickly took the chopsticks from Zhou Wenbai and began shoveling the alfalfa into his mouth.
“Young Master, the young master asked me to deliver lunch for you.” The Ji family maid held two large food boxes and bowed politely.
Ji Tan was not a picky eater. Aside from takeout, he would eat anything. One bowl of porridge and two side dishes did indeed seem meager compared to the two large boxes in the maid’s hands, but he was already eating, so there was no need to open anything new.
“Tell Ji Enyi to eat it himself,” Ji Tan said, pointing to the food on the small table. “I have food.”
The maid simply completed her master’s task and left after being refused.
“Tuan Tuan, you are not actually that unpicky.” Zhou Wenbai pinched Ji Tan’s soft cheek, which was puffed up from the porridge. “Is the porridge Zhou She made better than what I make?”
Ji Tan did not answer this question; instead, he ingratiatingly scooped up a spoonful of porridge to feed Zhou Wenbai. “Dr. Zhou has worked hard. Are you hungry? Have some too, Dr. Zhou.”
Ji Tan’s series of actions left Zhou Wenbai amused and helpless. Zhou Wenbai ate the porridge Ji Tan fed him, tasted it seriously, and raised an eyebrow. “It does seem to be better than what I make.”
Ji Tan’s eyes curved into smiles.
“Good boy.” Zhou Wenbai held Ji Tan on his lap and took the chopsticks from his hand. “I will feed Tuan Tuan.” Even when eating, Zhou Wenbai was afraid of tiring Ji Tan out.
After the meal, Zhou Wenbai called Zhou She, but there was no answer. Zhou Wenbai bombarded him with voice messages, video calls, and phone calls. Finally, a video call was answered by Zhou She.
“What are you doing?” Zhou She’s slightly impatient face appeared on the screen. “My client told me that her ex-husband used to spam her like this.”
Zhou Wenbai ignored the dry humor and asked directly, “Are you coming to get it yourself, or should I send it to you?” He was referring to the insulated food container left in the lounge.
“Throw it away.” Zhou She had not expected Zhou Wenbai to disturb him with such a small matter and prepared to hang up.
Zhou Wenbai still had the leisure to tease, “Our lawyer Zhou is quite wealthy and generous.” He glanced to the side and smiled, refusing, “Throwing away a regular container is fine, but this one that Tuan Tuan washed cannot be thrown away.”
Through the screen, Zhou She could faintly hear the sound of running water on the other end.
“What happened to your neck?” Zhou Wenbai scanned the light red mark on Zhou She’s exposed neck.
Zhou She paused, shifting the camera without a trace.
“What happened to yours?” Zhou She looked at the deeper red mark on Zhou Wenbai’s neck and curled his lip. “How did Ji Tan not strangle you to death?”
Zhou Wenbai feigned surprise. “Ji Tan and I are a couple, not enemies.”
“You had better remain this optimistic before you die.” Zhou She ended his thought there.
“I certainly will.” Zhou Wenbai moved past the topic, changing his tone. “Did you give Tuan Tuan a nickname in secret?”
Zhou She denied it. “No.”
“What exactly do you want?” Zhou She’s patience was exhausted.
Zhou Wenbai did not dwell on the suspicious hesitation in Zhou She’s answer. “I want to consolidate my power; help me find a good lawyer.”
Zhou She narrowed his eyes, staring fixedly at Zhou Wenbai’s face, which did not seem to be joking. “Did you not tell me not long ago that haste makes waste?”
“Times have changed.” Zhou Wenbai smiled indifferently.
The identical faces stared at each other across the screen, creating a strange, grotesque feeling. Zhou Wenbai was the first to yield. “Fine. They have already set a wedding date for you and Tuan Tuan, less than a month away.”
“I cannot wait that long,” Zhou Wenbai said, his gaze drifting slightly. “I cannot just watch Tuan Tuan marry someone else.” He turned his eyes to Zhou She. “Even if that person is my own brother.”
Zhou She received the subtle jealousy in Zhou Wenbai’s gaze and lowered his eyes. “I understand.”
“That is all for now.” Zhou Wenbai returned to his composed demeanor. “You can hang up.”
Zhou She’s thumb moved to the center of the phone screen. The sound of running water on the other side of the screen was still splashing.
“The nurse told you not to touch water.” With that comment from Zhou She, the video call ended.
Zhou Wenbai stared blankly for a moment before putting down the phone.
“Dr. Zhou, I have finished washing it.” Ji Tan shook the insulated container in his hand, and water droplets splashed onto Zhou Wenbai’s face. Zhou Wenbai grabbed Ji Tan’s arm, pulled him into his arms, and pulled out a tissue to wipe Ji Tan’s wet fingers.
“Someone spoils Tuan Tuan even more than I do,” Zhou Wenbai said, checking the IV site on Ji Tan’s hand to ensure the film was still securely in place. “He thinks it is a hardship for Tuan Tuan just to wash a bowl.”
Ji Tan naturally assumed Zhou Wenbai was talking about Ji Yuan. “No,” Ji Tan thought for a moment, “Mom said that if you eat someone else’s food, you have to wash the bowls. One must be polite.”
Zhou Wenbai took a bite of Ji Tan’s glib mouth.
Ji Tan shrank his shoulders in pain. “Dr. Zhou?”
Zhou Wenbai held Ji Tan’s lower lip, which he had bitten, and kissed it again. “A lesson for the little lamb that wanders off to eat wild grass.”
Ji Tan frowned innocently and immediately prepared to argue with Zhou Wenbai.
Zhou Wenbai interrupted. “Tuan Tuan, are you better? Should I take you to the adventure house?”
Ji Tan shook his head. “It is too dark. I am scared.”
“That is exactly why we should go.” Zhou Wenbai brought in another person to comfort Ji Tan. “Zhou She is even more afraid than Tuan Tuan; I will make him go too.” If two cowards went together, it would be less embarrassing than one going alone.
Ji Tan demanded, “Ji Yunxin has to go too.”
If three cowards were gathered together, he certainly would not be embarrassed.
Zhou Wenbai had no objections. “If he is willing.”
Ji Tan climbed down from Zhou Wenbai’s lap. “I will go ask him.”
Zhou Wenbai released his arm from around Ji Tan’s waist. Since Ji Enyi was hospitalized, Ji Yunxin, as his brother, naturally had to come to accompany him.
“Is Ji Yunxin here?” Ji Tan went to the ward and opened the door to look inside.
Ji Enyi, lying on the hospital bed, rolled his pitch-black eyes. “Are you looking for Ji Yunxin in my hospital room?”
Ji Tan looked around the room, did not see anyone, and walked over to stand by Ji Enyi’s bed. “When Ji Yunxin comes over, tell him I want to invite him to a haunted house.”
Ji Enyi let out a scoff. “Since when were you and Ji Yunxin on such good terms that you are inviting him?”
Ji Tan did not understand. “Can I not invite someone just because we are not on good terms?”
Ji Enyi looked at the sincere confusion on Ji Tan’s face and mocked, “Are you emotionally indifferent or a sociopath? How can you be so slow to receive emotional feedback?”
Unable to accept others’ emotions, unable to provide emotions, and even more unable to distinguish or understand the emotions of others—everyone was the same to Ji Tan, just like a mechanical machine that could not stir any emotional waves in him. Compared to an ordinary beautiful puppet, Ji Tan was even capable of harmful behavior toward others.
“Forget it.” Ji Enyi did not expect to get an answer from Ji Tan. “Your medical records are all with Ji Yuan anyway.” He raised his voice slightly and said to Ji Tan, “If Ji Yunxin goes, I am going too.”
Ji Tan was unwilling. “What are you going for?”
Ji Enyi retorted, “What is Ji Yunxin going for?”
“To date,” Ji Tan answered truthfully.
Ji Enyi did not believe him, but it did not stop him from saying, “Then I am going to date, too.”
Ji Tan frowned. “Who are you dating?”
Ji Enyi coldly closed his eyes, looking like he did not want to say anything more. “I am going to the haunted house to date a ghost.”
Ji Tan was shocked. He left the room in a daze, filled with heartfelt admiration for Ji Enyi, who could date a ghost despite having a heart condition.
“Dr. Zhou,” Ji Tan caught sight of a familiar figure and clingily hugged the person’s arm. “It is all settled. But besides you, me, Zhou She, and Ji Yunxin, there is one more person.” Ji Tan said, slightly troubled, “Ji Enyi is going too.”
A cold voice came from behind Ji Tan. “Where am I going? How come I do not know about this?”
Ji Tan turned his head subconsciously. Zhang Yao and Zhou She were walking side by side. Zhang Yao, a helpful bystander as he passed, wrapped his arm around Ji Tan’s shoulders and pushed him toward the person standing next to him, clicking his tongue. “The kid has been burned silly by the fever; this is your real boyfriend.”
