An Expert at Feigning Tears and Acting Like a Spoiled Brat × A Cold-Faced…
Zhou She was very much like Ji Tan’s adoptive mother. He judged everything around him using his own set of standards and could not tolerate even a single grain of sand in his eyes.
His adoptive mother’s gaze toward Ji Tan was always filled with extremely harsh criticism, constantly trimming away the messy branches that Ji Tan grew in the wrong direction.
Ji Tan dreaded people like that.
Zhou She was a minor police officer who took the authority he granted himself to strictly judge any product that did not conform to the standards he established.
Ji Tan thought this quite sharply as well.
“Dictator.” However, Ji Tan only dared to whisper his rebuttal.
Zhou She heard him, but compared to the illogical complaints of an idiot who was merely venting emotions, the client trapped in the restroom stall calling for help clearly needed more attention.
“Ji Tan, are you outside?” Ji Yunxin pounded on the door panel. As a victim, his cry for help was remarkably calm. “Stop fooling around. Open the door and let me out, please?”
No restroom was soundproof. Every conversation between Ji Tan and Zhou She had been heard by Ji Yunxin. Naturally, he knew exactly who the culprit was.
Accustomed to doing bad things, Ji Tan had strong nerves and pretended he was not there.
Ji Yunxin called Ji Tan’s name a few times, but getting no response, he had to ask Zhou She for help. “Lawyer Zhou, could you please check if this door can be opened from the outside, or call a waiter for me?”
Restrooms, as public facilities, were usually designed with high-intensity lighting to prevent accidents in high-traffic areas. White marble, white tiles, and glaringly bright incandescent lights filled the space.
Light reflected everywhere, leaving no shadows.
Zhou She’s pale, cold complexion was not out of place in such an environment. His hair was cut very short, exposing his three-dimensional, superior facial features completely. The light from above shone down from his high, prominent brow bone, and the dark shadows covering his slightly lowered eyelids became the only hint of darkness in the room.
Zhou She’s gaze swept past Ji Tan, who showed not the slightest hint of remorse, and then he calmly withdrew his eyes to focus on the door lock, which was tightly jammed by the table knife.
“Step back.”
Zhou She’s voice was not loud, as if he were merely fulfilling an obligation to warn them, and then he proceeded to act without needing anyone’s permission.
Ji Yunxin in the stall subconsciously retreated into a corner.
The sound of Zhou She’s boots on the floor was impossible to ignore, grinding and creaking.
Zhou She took a half-step back. His form-fitting work pants outlined the tight, fluid muscles of his legs. He raised a foot and kicked at the less-than-sturdy restroom partition. A thunderous sound of wood splintering erupted, and the metal table knife flew off, clattering sharply against the floor.
A muffled groan of pain came from Ji Yunxin inside the stall.
Zhou She tilted his head. Ji Tan had already covered his eyes in a self-deceiving manner.
“Thank you,” Ji Yunxin managed to push open the damaged door panel, clutching his arm as he walked out.
Zhou She’s expression remained indifferent; he had no intention of responding to Ji Yunxin.
Ji Yunxin knew a little about Zhou She’s temperament, so he did not find it awkward to be ignored. He turned his steps toward Ji Tan and walked forward a few paces.
Ji Tan kept his eyes covered, feigning blindness, adopting a posture of evading the consequences of his misdeeds. This was Ji Tan’s usual tactic.
Ji Yunxin had no choice but to leave for the moment. He nodded to Zhou She and said, “Lawyer Zhou, I am going to clean up. Please wait for me a moment.”
Ji Yunxin’s shirt sleeve was torn, and he looked quite disheveled.
Zhou She gave Ji Yunxin the time. Ji Yunxin walked hurriedly, preparing to go to the men’s clothing store next door to change; he had finished lunch and had class in the afternoon.
Because he was in a rush, he nearly collided with someone on his way out. A scent of cool, woody cologne brushed past his nose, and he barely managed to dodge.
“Apologies.” The person he nearly bumped into spoke first. The gentle voice was low and pleasant like a bubbling spring, as refreshing as a spring breeze.
Ji Yunxin did not have the time to look up at the owner of the voice; he only wanted to tidy himself up as quickly as possible.
Zhou Wenbo had come down from the operating room and, not seeing Ji Tan at the table, was directed to the restroom by a waiter.
“Tuantuan?” Zhou Wenbo walked into the restroom and saw Ji Tan covering his eyes in a self-deceiving fashion. Amusement filled his expression as he stepped forward to pull Ji Tan’s hands away. “What are you doing?”
Ji Tan’s wrists were held by Zhou Wenbo. He opened his eyes slightly and peeked backward very quickly.
Zhou She’s sharp facial features were lowered, making his expression unreadable, and Ji Yunxin had disappeared without a trace.
With the victim gone, Ji Tan certainly would not confess. He blinked his long, curled eyelashes and acted like a spoiled child. “Dr. Zhou, I came to use the restroom.”
He had not answered the question at all.
Zhou She lazily lifted his eyes, a light, ambiguous chuckle escaping his lips as he brushed past Zhou Wenbo and walked out.
Ji Tan tilted his bright, beautiful face, gazing at Zhou Wenbo with clear, watery, glaze-like eyes.
Zhou Wenbo’s hair was slightly longer, with soft, black bangs falling over his cold, sharp brow bone, softening his overly severe features and adding a touch of comforting gentleness.
“What is Tuantuan looking at?”
Zhou Wenbo sensitively noticed that when Zhou She passed him, Ji Tan’s gaze shifted slightly.
Zhou Wenbo’s eyes curved with a smile. Zhou She’s backward glance was chillingly cold, devoid of the slightest emotion. Yet, their vastly different gazes both held the same cold, frigid depths.
It was bizarre enough to make Ji Tan feel dazed.
“Did you mistake someone for me again?” Zhou Wenbo’s long, slender fingertips lightly stroked the slightly curled hair by Ji Tan’s ear. His clear, gentle voice held no hint of blame.
Ji Tan blinked and returned to his senses, refusing to admit it. “No.”
Ji Tan also felt that not being able to recognize one’s own boyfriend was a very embarrassing thing.
“Alright then.” Zhou Wenbo touched the rims of Ji Tan’s still-red eyes and lowered his hand. “I will wait for you outside.”
Ji Tan nodded obediently.
Zhou Wenbo walked out.
Zhou She had not left yet. He was not standing properly either, leaning his upper body against the door frame with one leg bent, looking lazy and relaxed.
Zhou She held his thumb and middle finger together, using his index finger to flick and spin a bronze-colored lighter. The lighter was quite old with a primitive design, and the patterns on it had been worn away, making one doubt whether it still functioned.
Zhou Wenbo took one look and looked away. “Why are you here?”
“A copyright lawsuit regarding a novel published by Ji Yunxin,” Zhou She said concisely. “He won the case, so he is treating me to a meal.”
Zhou Wenbo had no interest in the legal cases handled by Zhou She. He raised an eyebrow and shifted the topic. “Making someone cry, do you get a great sense of accomplishment from that?”
The lighter, which was spinning like a top on Zhou She’s fingertip, stopped instantly at the pressure of his index finger. He relaxed his grip, and the lighter fell into his palm, where he tucked it away.
“He was the one who mistook me for someone else.”
Zhou Wenbo did not commit to an opinion.
Zhou Wenbo was wearing a linen shirt, and his exposed skin exuded the clean scent of body wash. Zhou Wenbo was not a germaphobe, but the hospital was full of bacteria, and he felt clean only after thorough disinfection and washing.
“Tomorrow is the Ji family’s youngest son’s birthday banquet. Remember to go.” It was more of a notification.
The relationship between the Ji and Zhou families was not particularly close. It was simply that the two grandfathers had been very close in their youth. Decades had passed, and as the world changed, the only remaining connection was the marriage arrangement verbally agreed upon by the two old comrades.
Zhou She did not respond until Zhou Wenbo turned to the sink and began the strict, seven-step handwashing procedure. The sound of running water filled Zhou She’s eardrums, and his eyelids twitched slightly.
“I was just saying it,” Zhou She straightened up. Zhou Wenbo, having washed his hands, blew them dry and walked back into the restroom. Zhou She spoke as if he had anticipated it. “You really treat him like an idiot.”
In the poorly soundproofed restroom, Zhou Wenbo’s feigned voice of surprise sounded, somewhat muffled.
“Tuantuan, you must wash your hands before using the restroom in public places. Door handles carry a lot of bacteria; it is very easy to get infected if you do not wash your hands.”
Ji Tan responded in a foolish manner, unable to grasp the logic. “Ah?”
“Tuantuan, you did not wash them, did you?” Zhou Wenbo’s voice was hesitant and worried, sincerely proposing a solution. “Let me help you, Tuantuan.”
As Ji Tan offered a foolish word of thanks, Zhou She did not even listen; he turned and left directly.
With all four of them knowing each other, the lunch naturally ended up as a shared table.
Ji Yunxin was still wearing his white shirt after changing; he had class in the afternoon and could not dress too ostentatiously in front of his students. His arm was still numb from blocking the door, and his movements in cutting the steak were stiff.
Ji Yunxin was not simply inviting Zhou She to this meal. He had known Zhou She for a long time and had fallen for him just as long. The lawsuit was merely an excuse for him, as an old classmate, to contact Zhou She. He intended to use this meal to express his feelings. Tomorrow was Ji Enyi’s birthday, and when the two families met, the marriage arrangement would surely be mentioned. At the time, neither family had specified a child, and Ji Yunxin wanted this opportunity.
However, the appearance of Ji Tan and Zhou Wenbo was entirely outside of Ji Yunxin’s expectations.
“Tuantuan, eat on your own.” Zhou Wenbo picked up a white napkin, his eyes full of smiles, and gently wiped the black pepper sauce from the corner of Ji Tan’s mouth.
Ji Tan’s seat was right next to Zhou Wenbo, making it easy for him to do anything.
“I will take care of Dr. Zhou.” Ji Tan had a very strong sense of duty as a boyfriend. He cut a small piece of steak and fed it to Zhou Wenbo’s lips.
Zhou Wenbo helplessly opened his mouth. “Thank you, Tuantuan.”
The two of them were in such a warm and harmonious atmosphere that Ji Yunxin could not help but knit his brows tightly.
Zhou Wenbo and Zhou She had studied at the same school, and Ji Yunxin also knew Zhou Wenbo. After many years, seeing Zhou Wenbo again, it was very easy to distinguish the two.
Ji Yunxin suppressed the discomfort in his heart and spoke to the person opposite him who was as diligent as a little bee. “Ji Tan, look after yourself more. Eat your own food.”
Ji Tan, who was no longer hungry, sipped his lemon water, letting Ji Yunxin’s words go in one ear and out the other. Ji Yunxin had always known Ji Tan’s temper and, having no way to deal with someone who ignored him, lowered his eyes slightly.
Ji Yunxin felt puzzled. When did Ji Tan and Zhou Wenbo become so close? Zhou Wenbo was calling Ji Tan a nickname that even he did not know. Was it because of his aunt? Or was there something else he did not know?
Ji Tan’s intimate behavior toward Zhou Wenbo, seen through Ji Yunxin’s eyes, gave rise to a sense of being plundered, and he could not help but try to capture their attention.
Ji Yunxin put down his knife and fork and looked at Ji Tan, who was smiling sweetly at Zhou Wenbo. “Ji Tan, will you be going to Enyi’s birthday tomorrow?”
Ji Enyi was the product of the second marriage between Ji Tan’s mother and stepfather—a person who stepped entirely on all of Ji Tan’s nerves.
Every time Ji Tan heard that name, he would explode, but this time he merely frowned. “I am going.”
Ji Tan also knew that the two families would be discussing the marriage arrangement that day.
Watching Ji Tan’s lips pull downward as he forcibly suppressed his annoyance, Ji Yunxin felt the sense of losing control even more intensely.
“Ji Tan, why did you lock me in the restroom?” Ji Yunxin suddenly asked.
Suddenly, Ji Tan, who had been clinging stickily to Zhou Wenbo, stopped. He no longer smiled sweetly. His eyes were confused for a moment, unable to understand why Ji Yunxin was suddenly telling on him.
In the past, even when he bullied Ji Yunxin, he never reported it. Unless, that is, he was caught on the spot by adults. That was why, when Zhou Wenbo arrived and saw that Ji Yunxin was not in the restroom, he had breathed a sigh of relief.
Kindness is a very noble quality. Especially when he had a boyfriend he was currently dating.
Ji Tan decisively denied it. “I did not.”
Seeing Ji Tan staring at him, Ji Yunxin’s heartstrings did not feel as taut as before. He relaxed and debated logically with Ji Tan. “Lawyer Zhou was also there just now.”
Zhou She had seen the whole process; Ji Tan’s lie was not clever at all.
“Tuantuan?” Zhou Wenbo also put down his knife and fork, tilting his head as if waiting for Ji Tan’s answer.
Ji Tan saw the disapproval in Zhou Wenbo’s eyebrows and looked at Zhou She, who sat diagonally opposite them like a strict and impartial foster mother.
He could not continue the lie, and honesty was also a beautiful quality. Coupled with the idea of correcting one’s mistakes, Ji Tan felt he could still salvage his image in front of Dr. Zhou.
Ji Tan’s little expression was caught between hesitation and struggle. Zhou Wenbo raised his hand to touch the little curls by Ji Tan’s ear and glanced at Zhou She. “Hmm?”
It was like a question.
Zhou She received Zhou Wenbo’s gaze and furrowed his brows slightly.
Ji Tan sensed the undercurrents between Zhou Wenbo and Zhou She, but he did not quite understand them. There was a difference between surrendering and being exposed on the spot.
Before Zhou She could report him, Ji Tan admitted, “I did it.”
“I did not see it.”
Two different voices intersected and intertwined, yet were remarkably clear.
Ji Tan widened his eyes and looked at Zhou She.
He had been prepared to bear the consequences of surrendering, yet Zhou She, looking so upright and honorable, had lied.
Did that not mean he had surrendered for nothing? He could have denied it to the end.
Feeling deeply betrayed, Ji Tan cried out in anger and pointed at Zhou She, accusing him to Zhou Wenbo: “He is lying!”
