- Chapter 10 - A Beauty Like a Flower Beyond the Clouds
Ji Tan’s fever broke on the third day, though his body remained weak after the illness. Not wanting to fall behind in his studies, Ji Tan went to a haunted house with Zhou Wenbai the very next day, which happened to be a weekend.
“Is Tuan Tuan afraid of the dark?” Zhou Wenbai strolled behind Ji Tan, who was poking and prodding at the haunted house decorations with intense curiosity. His voice was light and clearly teasing.
Ji Tan was busy grabbing railings and flipping through boxes, trying to figure out where the ghosts were hiding. His mind was entirely preoccupied with finding the ghosts and bracing for the moment they would pop out to scare him, so he barely managed to squeeze out a response to Zhou Wenbai. “I am.”
“Alright then.” Zhou Wenbai stepped forward, took Ji Tan by the arm, and guided him around an obstacle on the floor. “Be careful not to trip.”
Ji Tan took hold of Zhou Wenbai’s hand and looked at him without blinking. “Dr. Zhou, your vision is excellent.”
How could it not be, when he could see every blood vessel in a human heart?
Zhou Wenbai grasped Ji Tan’s smaller hand in his own. “Does Tuan Tuan want me to help you?”
Ji Tan nodded happily, caught up in the fun. “Dr. Zhou, help me find the ghosts before they find us.”
Zhou Wenbai indulged Ji Tan’s sticky coquetry, replying, “Fine, fine, I will find them with Tuan Tuan.”
While Zhou Wenbai accompanied Ji Tan, Ji Yunxin and Ji Enyi, who were also in the group, remained much quieter.
“Enyi, you shouldn’t have come,” Ji Yunxin advised. “Your heart cannot handle the stimulation.”
In the pitch-black environment, Ji Enyi maneuvered his wheelchair, his heart beating steadily in his chest. “It is not as stimulating as seeing Ji Tan push you down the stairs when I was four years old.”
“That was fake,” Ji Enyi said with a sneer. “You hit your head and became a real ghost at that moment.”
Ji Yunxin, clearly the victim, always remained silent on this topic. This made Ji Enyi, who had suffered no harm himself but narrated the event repeatedly like a broken record, seem like a paranoid madman.
An environment that is too dark can incite a desire for expression; young couples often prefer such places for confessions. They do not have to worry about their nervousness or shyness being seen by the person they like, nor do they worry about becoming the topic of gossip if they fail. They also love to choose such places for telling the truth, as they do not have to worry about seeing the distorted faces of their partners when they say something malicious. Without visual impact, the cruel words uttered are somehow diminished.
Ji Yunxin said slowly, “Ji Tan likes you more than he likes me.”
Ji Enyi could not see the expression on Ji Yunxin’s face, but the words Ji Yunxin spoke were like a dull blade scraping at Ji Enyi’s nerves, reflecting doubly on his emotions.
“Ji Tan and I share half of the same blood,” Ji Enyi said, disgusted that Ji Yunxin would compare himself to him. “What are you supposed to be?”
The two parted ways unhappily.
“What are you wandering around for?” Ji Enyi, having split from Ji Yunxin, saw Ji Tan walking aimlessly and could not help but mock him. “Where is your Dr. Zhou? Is he willing to let you wander around alone?”
Arguments between Ji Enyi and Ji Tan were always a back-and-forth affair. Usually, Ji Enyi would start it, they would bicker for two or three rounds, and when Ji Tan got tired, it would end. Ji Tan’s emotional capacity allowed him to snap back a few times at most before he lost interest.
Ji Enyi waited two seconds, but when Ji Tan did not reply, his brow furrowed. “Are you mute?”
Ji Enyi’s face was brushed by two soft fingers, leaving a cold, wet trail. He instinctively went to touch it; Ji Tan’s fingertip brushed against his palm, also feeling cold.
Ji Tan was delighted. “I just touched it on a corpse. It is corpse water.”
“Are you an idiot? You believe things meant to trick children.” Ji Enyi rolled his eyes, his gloomy face suddenly looking lively. He did not have a tissue, so he could not deal with the so-called corpse water Ji Tan mentioned. He pulled Ji Tan’s hand over, grumbling as he wiped the sticky water from Ji Tan’s fingers with his own sleeve. “Is it not dirty? How disgusting.”
After wiping Ji Tan’s fingers and cleaning the water off his own face, Ji Enyi tossed his coat aside in disgust.
“I am playing hide and seek with Dr. Zhou,” Ji Tan shared happily. “Let us see who finds whom first.”
“Childish couple games,” Ji Enyi said with a cold “Oh.” “Maybe he is just tricking you so he can go off and pay for a three-minute tryst.”
Ji Tan’s worldview was shaken. Clearly, Ji Enyi’s poisonous tongue was as deadly as rat poison, and he could say even crueler things.
“That is what prostitutes are for,” Ji Enyi said with conviction. “Seeking thrills, short duration, pursuing excitement in the shortest time possible.”
Ji Tan could not stand Ji Enyi’s words and kicked his wheelchair. “That is illegal!”
Ji Enyi was also provoked by Ji Tan’s actions.
“Are you that protective of him?” Ji Enyi shouted. “Is it not illegal that you pushed Ji Yunxin down the stairs? Did you get away with it because you were a minor?”
Ji Tan was annoyed and shouted back, “I originally wanted to push you, but Ji Yunxin would definitely have stopped me, so I pushed him first!”
Ji Enyi was even angrier after hearing this, though the point of his anger was completely skewed. “You have always listened to Ji Yunxin since you were little. I am your younger brother! Why do you listen to him so much?”
Ji Tan was confused. He had wanted to push Ji Enyi and was afraid Ji Yunxin would object, so he pushed Ji Yunxin. How exactly was he listening to Ji Yunxin? Besides, what did it matter that Ji Enyi was his brother? Were they implying that he, as the older brother, should listen to his younger brother?
Seeing Ji Tan left speechless by his words, Ji Enyi sneered and, unable to stay any longer, turned his wheelchair around and left. Ji Tan was also angry; he did not even know what he was angry about, but he wanted to find Dr. Zhou to discuss what he was angry about.
“I let you come out to relax, and you are unhappy again?” Zhou Wenbai raised an eyebrow at Zhou She, who had arrived late. “Did you not say the law firm had things to do and you could not come?”
Zhou She countered, “Was it not you who specifically arranged for Ji Yunxin and me to be together to make me a tool?”
Zhou Wenbai, having been called out, did not deny it. “Indeed.”
“He seems to view you as a peer,” Zhou Wenbai remarked.
Zhou She did not catch the implication and changed the subject. “Are you alone?”
Zhou Wenbai curved his lips into a sweet, troubled smile. “Just a little game of cat and mouse between lovers. That is how it is when your partner is young; you always have to spend a lot of time and energy playing with him.”
Zhou She could not understand it.
“So you ran here to slack off?” Zhou She asked calmly.
Zhou Wenbai adjusted his posture against the wall and twisted his sore neck. “Of course, you have to understand that I am older. After three consecutive surgeries, I am truly exhausted.”
Zhou She said, “You could have chosen another time.”
“His stamina seems to be even worse than yours after staying up all night.” After all, he had caught a fever after just a little wind. It was likely he had not fully recovered and could easily fall ill again if he did not rest properly.
Zhou Wenbai shook his head, looking profound. “He is physically fine. The fever is an emotional illness.”
This was the first time Zhou She had heard this term; it was quite novel.
Zhou Wenbai explained concisely, “He gets a fever whenever his emotions fluctuate too wildly.”
So, the time he sent Ji Tan to school and then picked him up, he got a fever because of that? Zhou She lifted his eyelids. “Are you saying he got a fever because he was scared of me?”
Zhou Wenbai saw Zhou She’s unpleasant expression and smiled. “I did not say that.”
But Zhou She could hear that this was exactly what Zhou Wenbai meant. Zhou She turned to leave, and Zhou Wenbai called after his back, “If Tuan Tuan gets anxious looking for you, remember to call me. I will find him.”
Zhou She did not even acknowledge Zhou Wenbai.
What was the difference between Zhou Wenbai and a pet owner who climbed a tree to rest while watching their puppy run in circles at the bottom?
Zhou She’s face was cold, and he walked with such a powerful aura that none of the ghosts in the haunted house dared to try and scare him. Halfway through, he happened to see Ji Tan and Ji Enyi parting ways.
“Why are you here?” Ji Tan, having finally found Zhou Wenbai, ran over happily, threw his arms around him, and sniffed him like a little dog.
“What are you doing?” Zhou She gripped Ji Tan’s thin, tough shoulders and pushed him away.
Ji Tan said angrily, “Ji Enyi said you went out for abnormal consumption.”
What abnormal consumption? Ji Tan’s shoulders were gripped tightly by Zhou She’s large palms, causing him some pain.
“Prostitution,” Ji Tan said loudly.
Zhou She was already annoyed by Ji Tan’s inappropriate, boundary crossing behavior, and now he was confused by Ji Tan’s wild accusations. “I am busy to the point of death, where would I go for abnormal consumption?”
Ji Tan pouted. “Ji Enyi said you can only last three minutes.”
Zhou She gritted his teeth. “I am twenty-six, not sixty-two.”
As soon as he said it, he regretted it. Why was he arguing with Ji Tan about this? The subject of the discussion was completely wrong. “I will take you to find…” Zhou Wenbai.
“Dr. Zhou.” Ji Tan had never heard Zhou Wenbai speak so loudly and could not handle his attitude, so he resorted to coquetry to make him soften. “I am afraid of the dark.”
Zhou She’s words were cut off. Ji Tan was someone who knew how to cling to people, stickily grabbing Zhou She’s arm and pressing himself into his arms.
“You are afraid of the dark, and you wander through a haunted house alone?” Zhou She’s tone was skeptical.
Zhou Wenbai would know Ji Tan was lying but would not expose him, and Zhou She, unaware that Ji Tan was lying, could not expose him either.
“Well, I like playing with Dr. Zhou more than I am afraid of the dark.”
Zhou Wenbai would have been very pleased to hear this from Ji Tan. Zhou She, however, just thought Ji Tan was a little love brained. The concept of an emotional illness lingered in Zhou She’s mind; burning for three days, then another three, would have taken half his life away.
“You shut up from now on, and I will take you away.” Zhou She’s plan was simple: have Ji Tan follow him obediently until he found Zhou Wenbai, then toss him over and be done with it. But Zhou She had underestimated Ji Tan’s ability to be a nuisance.
“Dr. Zhou, carry me.” Ji Tan stood on tiptoe to reach for Zhou She’s neck.
“No.” Zhou She gripped Ji Tan’s restless wrists, refusing the unreasonable request. “How can we play if we are both holding each other? Walk yourself.”
“I am tired of playing, I do not want to play anymore.” Ji Tan’s reasoning was fully justified. “I want Dr. Zhou to carry me.”
Zhou She had to quickly choose between Ji Tan continuing to pester him with his little mouth or bringing him to Zhou Wenbai more quickly. He chose the latter. Zhou She covered Ji Tan’s mouth and picked him up.
Ji Tan wrapped his arms around Zhou She’s neck and blinked.
“523, if I cultivate a good relationship with Zhou Wenbai, will he face the Zhou family with me?”
“Please explore for yourself, Missioner.”
The system could not provide any help. Ji Tan was being held so tightly by Zhou She that he was having trouble breathing, so he puffed up his cheeks and tried to blow air into Zhou She’s palm.
“If the Missioner can tell the difference between Zhou Wenbai and Zhou She, perhaps you can advance the main lead Zhou She’s emotional line.”
“Everyone wants to be the only one in their partner’s heart,” 523’s data analysis noted.
If Zhou She saw that his twin brother’s partner could never tell who his lover was, he would likely feel some doubt about love. Ji Tan’s inability to tell them apart was a bug he had created himself.
“523, I really cannot distinguish between identical pieces of code.”
523 remained silent for a long time before saying, “The feelings of every created piece of code for their creator are special.”
Ji Tan vaguely remembered that most of the character codes in this dungeon were compiled by him, night after night, as soon as he graduated.
“Is it fun?” Zhou She pinched Ji Tan’s cheek, making it impossible for him to blow air into his palm.
Ji Tan pulled Zhou She’s palm away, unhappy. “You are suffocating me.”
Zhou She glanced at Ji Tan’s pursed lips and let go. “Behave yourself.”
Ji Tan rubbed his cheek, which had been pinched sore by Zhou She. “Dr. Zhou, if you bully me, I will not marry you later.”
Zhou She remained unmoved by Ji Tan’s threat. Did he care?
Ji Tan saw that his usual tactics, which worked on Zhou Wenbai every time, were failing. Thinking he had gone too far, he acted weak and ingratiating, wrapping his arms around Zhou She’s neck and whispering, “Dr. Zhou, do not be angry, I will marry you.”
Ji Tan’s little claws had clearly touched something strange, as they were cold enough to make Zhou She’s warm neck shiver. Zhou She’s senses were drowned in the indescribable, fragrant scent of Ji Tan, which pierced straight into the depths of his lungs.
Zhou She locked Ji Tan’s arms, which were trying to wrap tighter around his neck, to avoid being strangled by the reckless Ji Tan.
“Dr. Zhou, why are you not saying anything?” Ji Tan, getting no response, urged him annoyingly.
He was not Zhou Wenbai; what was he supposed to say?
He had already done his best by pretending to be Zhou Wenbai and delivering Ji Tan to his side; did he really have to indulge Ji Tan’s spoiled little temper, too?
Zhou She let out a vague “Hmm” in response, hoping to get Ji Tan to quiet down as soon as possible.
Ji Tan was not very satisfied and pressed his cold fingers against Zhou She’s neck, asking relentlessly, “Does Dr. Zhou want to marry me?”
Zhou She shivered violently.
Ji Tan was truly mischievous; finding out that Zhou She was afraid of the cold, he insisted on using his neck to warm his hands. Zhou She could not stand it anymore and freed a hand to grab Ji Tan, raising his voice slightly to stop his misbehavior. “Yes!”
How could Zhou Wenbai not want to? Was everything Zhou Wenbai doing not just to marry Ji Tan in the end?
