My Angel, My Guardian (GL) - Chapter 14
Chapter 14
Lele (Xiao Zetong) stood up and walked to the window to make a call. The phone was picked up after four rings, and a middle-aged man’s voice came through.
“Lele, what’s wrong?”
The man’s voice had a bit of a rogue edge to it, but it was filled with the genuine concern of an elder for a junior.
“Uncle Bai, I want to ask for a favor. Please help me investigate who laid a hand on the Young Miss of the Ying family.”
Xiao Zetong had always been reluctant to use her connections in the underworld, but she felt she had no choice now. Ying Jia’en (Aiai) had been slashed and sent to the hospital; she could no longer sit idly by.
“Who has the audacity to touch someone from the Ying family? Fine, I’ll look into it for you.”
“Thank you, Uncle Bai. I’ll treat you to dinner once this is over as a thank you.”
“Haha, alright then. Wait for my news.”
The man hung up. Xiao Zetong turned around and sighed as she looked at the still-unconscious Ying Jia’en.
“Aiai, don’t worry. I won’t let you get hurt like this for no reason.”
Xiao Zetong spoke softly but solemnly. Just then, Ying Jia’en frowned on the bed and slowly opened her eyes. A flicker of confusion passed through her gaze, but it soon cleared.
“How do you feel?”
Xiao Zetong hurried over. Ying Jia’en looked at her and tried to speak, but her throat was too dry. She pointed to a water cup nearby. Xiao Zetong quickly grabbed it and put the straw to her mouth. After a few sips, Ying Jia’en let go. Because of the injury on her back, she had to lie prone on the bed.
“I told you… I haven’t caught you yet, so I wouldn’t die,” Ying Jia’en joked, trying to lighten the mood, but the attempt backfired—Xiao Zetong burst into tears.
“Hey, don’t cry! What’s wrong?” Ying Jia’en was bewildered. “Stop crying, ow…”
In her rush to wipe away Xiao Zetong’s tears, she tugged at the wound on her back and hissed in pain.
“Be careful! Do I need to call a doctor?” Xiao Zetong held her down to keep her from moving. Ying Jia’en took her hand.
“Don’t worry about me. Kids from the Ying family don’t kick the bucket that easily.”
“You scared me to death! Do you know how terrified I was when I saw you in the parking lot? I felt like the sky was falling when you fainted. You know how important you are to me, so why didn’t you protect yourself? I can’t imagine what would have happened if Sister Xing’er had arrived a minute later. Ying Jia’en, promise me—you are not allowed to die before I do.”
Xiao Zetong choked out the words, reaching out to pinch Ying Jia’en’s ear as a warning. Ying Jia’en winced at the pain.
“I didn’t want this to happen either. It was so sudden. I’m just lucky to be alive,” she muttered, feeling quite aggrieved.
“Alright. What do you want to eat? I’ll go buy it.”
“I want the chicken soup my mom makes.”
“I’ll call her and let her know. I’m heading out for a bit.”
As Xiao Zetong left the room, Ying Jia’en’s expression turned dark. The pain in her back reminded her that she had a score to settle with whoever dared to target her.
A few hours later, just after dawn, Ying Yu and Yun Han arrived. They poured the warm chicken soup into a bowl, and Xiao Zetong fed Ying Jia’en spoonful by spoonful.
“Aiai, have you offended anyone recently?” Ying Yu sat on the sofa, her eyes full of heartache. Aiai was the treasure of their family; even she hadn’t been overly harsh with the girl. Seeing her wounded like this sparked both anger and pain.
“No, Mom. You know I always prioritize harmony and don’t offend people easily. I really haven’t made any enemies.”
“We will investigate this. Your injury won’t go unavenged,” Ying Yu said firmly. “Just focus on recovering. I’ll handle things at the company. Lele, thank you for taking care of our Aiai.”
“I will, Auntie Ying. Don’t worry about the company. As for Aiai, I’ll feed her until she’s nice and chubby.” Xiao Zetong poked Ying Jia’en’s cheek.
Ying Jia’en frowned. Does she think I’m a child? Honestly.
“Aiai, what else do you want to eat? Mommy will bring it next time,” Yun Han asked softly, holding her daughter’s hand.
“Mommy, I’ll eat anything you make. I’m sorry for making you worry.”
Yun Han smiled and shook her head. “As long as you’re okay. Rest well; we’ll handle the rest. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
After her parents left, the large VIP room was once again occupied only by the two of them.
“Lele, it’s late. Go home and rest. You’ve been busy all night—look, you even have dark circles. Go take a shower, change, and get some sleep.”
Ying Jia’en knew many people had stayed up for her, but she was most worried about Xiao Zetong. The usually impeccably dressed girl was now in casual loungewear with messy hair and dark circles that rivaled a panda’s.
“I’m not comfortable leaving you alone. Don’t worry, I’ll rest when I’m tired. But you—any discomfort?”
Xiao Zetong was being uncharacteristically gentle. Ying Jia’en shook her head, thinking that being a patient had its perks—at least she got treated better than usual.
“Lele, I want to eat dumplings made by your own hands. Go home and make some for me, okay?”
Ying Jia’en used the excuse to force her to go home. Xiao Zetong agreed and took the car Ying Jia’en arranged for her. After a shower and a three-hour nap, she woke up to the alarm and started making dumplings. She rarely cooked—she was a “kitchen idiot” who had been looked after by others her whole life—but she had learned how to make dumplings while studying abroad.
She prepared the seafood filling and started steaming them. Ying Jia’en loved dumplings, but specifically steamed ones; she wouldn’t touch boiled ones.
By the time she finished, the sun was setting. Traumatized by the parking lot incident from the night before, she didn’t want to go to the garage. She briefly considered moving houses but decided to just take a taxi instead.
Outside the gate, the car that had dropped her off was still waiting. The driver opened the door for her. Ten minutes later, she arrived at the hospital.
When Xiao Zetong opened the door to the room, she saw a girl holding Ying Jia’en’s hand and crying hysterically, while Ying Jia’en was softly comforting her. At the sound of the door, both turned. Seeing it was Xiao Zetong, Ying Jia’en immediately shook off the girl’s hand.
“Lele, don’t misunderstand! She’s just a friend,” Ying Jia’en explained quickly.
Xiao Zetong told herself to stay calm and not argue with a patient. She walked over with a bright smile and set the thermal lunchbox on the nightstand.
“What’s there to misunderstand? Don’t I know you after all these years? Miss, thank you for coming to see my Aiai.”
Xiao Zetong emphasized the word “my” heavily. The girl wasn’t stupid; she took the hint and realized it was time to leave.
“It’s nothing. Jia’en, I’ll be going now.”
Once the girl left, Xiao Zetong huffed and sat on the sofa.
“She really is just a friend! She’s the daughter of the CEO of Yuanhang Group. We had a collaboration recently, and I met her at a banquet. I swear it’s that simple. Yes, I admit she confessed to me, but I rejected her on the spot. Lele, please don’t misunderstand, okay?”
