Misty Nights in Hong Kong - Chapter 9
Gu Xiangsi Receives an Unexpected Confession!
The man only grew more excited, lunging forward with his entire body.
“Bang!”
The handbag struck the man squarely in the face. Seizing the moment when he winced in pain and turned his head, she raised her knee and kicked, clean and decisive. This was a self-defense move she had deliberately learned after being harassed by a drunkard while working abroad.
“Hiss!” The man gasped sharply in pain, clutching his lower abdomen as he doubled over, sweat instantly beading on his forehead.
“You-you dare kick me?” He gritted his teeth, glaring at her with vicious eyes.
“If you dare grope me in a place like this, why wouldn’t I dare kick you?”
Gu Xiangsi tightened her grip on her bag and took half a step back.
The man steadied himself against the wall, his gaze growing even more lecherous. “Aren’t you just eyeing the Young Master of Hong Kong, trying to get into his bed?”
Gu Xiangsi’s expression darkened instantly, her fingers turning white from how tightly she gripped her bag.
She lifted her eyes to meet his, her gaze as cold as ice. “Who I want to get into bed with is none of your business.”
The man inexplicably shivered under her stare but stubbornly retorted, “Seems like you’re close with him? No wonder…”
“Did Zhao send you to test me?”
Gu Xiangsi clearly caught the flicker of panic in his eyes.
She raised a hand to smooth her slightly disheveled clothes. “I’m not close with him, and you don’t need to waste your efforts on me.”
With that, she turned on her heels in her high heels and yanked the restroom door open with a loud “clang.”
Standing right outside were two figures, their silhouettes elongated against the backlight.
The sudden brightness made Gu Xiangsi instinctively raise a hand to shield her eyes. After a few seconds of adjustment, she blinked them open to see Zhao Niesen and Fu Sinian standing there.
Zhao Niesen coughed lightly, feigning surprise. “Miss Gu, what are you doing in the men’s restroom?”
“Mr. Zhao, what do you think?”
Gu Xiangsi’s tone was icy as her gaze shifted to Fu Sinian, who stood motionless beside him. An indescribable emotion welled up in her heart.
Just as she was lost in thought, Fu Sinian suddenly spoke, his eyes briefly landing on the man still clutching his lower abdomen inside the restroom.
“Mr. Zhao, if you don’t clean out the termites in the foundation, no matter how tall the building is, it’ll still be a hazard.”
His words were calm, but the low pressure radiating from him seemed to freeze the air.
“Fair enough,” Zhao Niesen said, glancing at the man inside. “You don’t need to come to the company tomorrow.”
This was unexpected for Gu Xiangsi, was Fu Sinian actually helping her?
She stood straight-backed by the roadside when Zhao Niesen approached and said, “Manager Gu, need a ride? Mr. Chen had to leave early, and it’s hard to get a taxi around this golf course.”
Gu Xiangsi replied coolly, “Thank you, but I’ve already called a car.”
She glanced down at the Uber app, where over a dozen drivers had declined her request.
Zhao Niesen leisurely glanced behind her. “Manager Gu, you really are something. This is the second time.”
Gu Xiangsi instinctively turned her head slightly.
There, Fu Sinian was strolling toward them with one hand in his pocket, exuding an air of lazy indifference.
Zhao Niesen’s eyes flickered. “President Fu, Manager Gu hasn’t been able to get a ride. Could you give her a lift since it’s on your way?”
Fu Sinan’s gaze swept past Gu Xiangsi indifferently, lingering for barely a second before he withdrew it, his tone detached and cold. “Am I close with her?”
Gu Xiangsi froze.
He had overheard their conversation.
In the next instant, Fu Sinian brushed past her as casually as a passing breeze. When his tall figure cast a shadow over her, she caught a faint whiff of woody citrus from him, and her grip on her phone tightened slightly.
Out of the corner of her eye, she saw him stride over the steps and into a pristine white Mercedes-Maybach G650: wild, untamed, and towering, much like the man himself.
As Fu Sinian rolled down the car window, he caught sight of the woman’s petite, fragile figure shrinking in the rearview mirror. An inexplicable irritation surged within him, and he tugged at his collar absentmindedly.
Noticing Jiang Liangchen staring at him intently, he snapped coldly, “Spit it out if you’ve got something to say.”
“Sinian, isn’t she the girl from the photo in your wallet?” Jiang Liangchen ventured cautiously.
“If you still can’t let go, why not-”
“Which eye of yours sees me not letting go?” Fu Sinian’s icy glare silenced Jiang Liangchen instantly. The latter lowered his head and fiddled with his phone, muttering under his breath.
“Manager Gu is really beautiful. She must have plenty of suitors, right? It’s been years since you parted, wonder if she’s dating anyone now…”
The probing words made Fu Sinian narrow his eyes slightly, his throat dry, his irritation mounting.
“And honestly, it’s not easy to get a cab around here. A girl all alone…”
Fu Sinian lowered his gaze, spinning his phone in his hand before speaking abruptly, “If you’re so keen on playing the good Samaritan, should I get you a commendation banner?”
A chill ran down Jiang Liangchen’s spine, a premonition of impending doom.
Sure enough, when the Mercedes G-Class turned the corner, Jiang Liangchen was unceremoniously shoved out of the car by Fu Sinian.
He grumbled under his breath, “Nice. Stabbing your own brother in the back, huh?”
Ten minutes later, Fu Sinian’s phone buzzed with a WeChat notification.
A photo popped up on the screen first.
Gu Xiangsi sat inside a modest Bentley, the door held open by a man in a crisp suit and silver-framed glasses. The man was smiling, leaning in to say something to her, his fingers lightly resting on the car door’s edge.
A voice message followed immediately.
[Buddy, looks like you’ve got competition. Miss Gu’s already been picked up.]
Fu Sinian’s grip on his phone tightened, his gaze dark and unreadable as he stared at the photo for a long moment.
Finally, he scoffed and tossed the phone back onto the passenger seat.
“Gu Xiangsi, your taste just keeps getting worse.”
The photo showed Gu Xiangsi with that same man from a few days ago, the one Fu Sinian deemed hideously ugly.
Meanwhile, the so-called “hideously ugly” man, Lu Wang, had just dropped Gu Xiangsi off at the entrance of Shau Kei Wan residential area when a group of women passed by. Spotting Lu Wang, they immediately swarmed him, clamoring for his contact details.
Gu Xiangsi hadn’t expected such boldness. Only after Lu Wang dealt with them did the women reluctantly leave.
“I might need some time before I can meet the classmate you mentioned,” Gu Xiangsi said.
“No problem. We’ll stay in touch by phone,” Lu Wang replied.
Gu Xiangsi nodded, thanking him again for the ride home.
She turned and entered the residential complex.
Pausing at the entrance, she hesitated.
Living here was indeed inconvenient, but she’d already paid a year’s rent. She could only endure it for now and plan to move somewhere else next year.
Stepping inside, she wasn’t surprised to see Xiaoli and that man again.
She couldn’t fathom why she kept running into him lately, his gaze seemed to cling to her like glue.
Without a word, she shut and locked her door behind her.
The man’s voice seeped through the crack, “What does she do for work? So aloof.”
Xiaoli sneered, “Who knows? Maybe she’s someone’s mistress.”
For a moment, Gu Xiangsi wanted to storm in and tear Xiaoli’s mouth off. But remembering the man’s unsettling presence, she restrained herself.
By the end of November, Gu Xiangsi’s company held its anniversary celebration.
The event was held at the Hong Kong Yacht Club.
Among the colleagues, the atmosphere appeared lively with clinking glasses and cheerful laughter, but beneath the surface, tensions simmered as everyone vied to impress potential business partners. Each held a wine glass, exchanging flattery with practiced ease.
She stood alone by the wrought-iron railing, watching their interactions as the sea breeze lifted the hem of her pale blue dress.
Gu Xiangsi disliked these social gatherings, she always felt out of place.
Turning away, she noticed several yachts anchored not far away, their lights twinkling on the water.
Her gaze dimmed slightly when her phone suddenly rang.
“Uncle, what is it?”
Gu Xiangsi frowned.
“Gu Xiangsi, where’s the money? Your brother’s about to have his legs broken by debt collectors!”
Song Ping’s voice was laced with impatience.
“Did you gamble again? I told you to stop! My monthly salary isn’t enough to cover your reckless spending!”
Her expression darkened.
Song Ping’s tone turned forceful. “How dare you talk to me like that? I’m your uncle! If you want to see your grandmother again, transfer the money now.”
“Uncle, I’ll borrow from a colleague first. I’ll come back tomorrow.”
Hanging up, she rubbed her temples. It seemed she needed to speed things up, she had to find a way to resolve her grandmother’s situation first.
She selected a few more design drafts from her files and sent them to Li Ye, asking her to help sell them.
Ahead, a yacht was slowly approaching.
Duan Jingwen stood on the top deck, holding a wine glass as he idly took in the scenery.
Suddenly, his gaze landed on a familiar figure by the railing on the dock.
“Gu Xiangsi?”
Fu Sinian lay on a deck chair, a book covering his eyes as he dozed.
At Duan Jingwen’s exclamation, he lazily removed the book and sat up.
Lifting his gaze, he spotted a woman in a pale blue dress not far ahead, her long hair fluttering in the sea breeze, her brows slightly furrowed.
Fu Sinian’s eyes gleamed with lazy amusement as he glanced at Duan Jingwen. “You know her?”
“So, she’s the one who dumped you?”
A book flew straight at Duan Jingwen.
Duan Jingwen deftly dodged.
Last time in the private room, he had heard Jiang Liangchen mention a “Miss Gu.” Combined with Fu Sinian’s recent mood swings and his reaction just now, he had pieced it together.
He raised his hands in surrender, explaining, “Gu Xiangsi and I were high school classmates. I went abroad for university, and we lost touch.”
Fu Sinian let out an indifferent “Oh.”
Just then, the yacht drew closer, and a sudden commotion erupted on the open-air deck.
Before Gu Xiangsi could react, a bouquet of roses was thrust into her hands.
The crowd fell silent as Shen Zhisi, dressed in a pristine white suit, stepped forward.
“Manager Gu, taking advantage of the anniversary celebration and with our colleagues as witnesses, I like you.”
“Wow! Get together! Get together!” The crowd erupted in cheers.
“Manager Shen!” Gu Xiangsi took half a step back, her lower back pressing against the cold railing.
“Is there some kind of misunderstanding?”
