- Chapter 95 - Compensation for Losses
At this moment, the completely unaware Mu Yin arrived at Gongsun Ru’s room. Gongsun Ru had just returned not long ago and was sitting at the table with a troubled expression.
Knock, knock, knock!
Mu Yin rapped on the door, and only then did Gongsun Ru look up, frowning slightly before rising to open it.
Seeing Mu Yin standing outside, Gongsun Ru wasn’t particularly surprised.
“Miss Yin,” Gongsun Ru asked, “it’s so late is there something you need? Or do you have news about the ancient mirror?”
“Yes,” Mu Yin nodded, hesitating for a moment before asking, “Would it be convenient to speak with you now?”
Gongsun Ru studied her, then nodded slightly and stepped aside to let her in. Once inside, Mu Yin whispered something to Hong Zhuang, instructing her to stand guard at the door like a proper sentry.
After entering, Gongsun Ru poured Mu Yin a cup of tea and set it before her, then poured one for herself. The two sat across from each other at the table, eyes meeting.
Gongsun Ru spoke first: “Miss Yin, you said you have news about the ancient mirror, do you know where it is now?”
Mu Yin rubbed her nose awkwardly. “I do have news about the mirror, but it seems to have encountered some trouble.”
Gongsun Ru frowned. “Miss Yin, you should also know that the mirror is very important to our Valley of Clarity. Its material is extremely durable. When you say it’s encountered trouble, do you mean it’s broken?”
Mu Yin gave a dry laugh. “It’s worse than broken.”
Gongsun Ru: “…”
A faint sense of foreboding crept into her heart.
Mu Yin didn’t beat around the bush. In the gentlest and most tactful way possible, she recounted the mirror’s fate and the matter of Ah Qin being trapped inside. When she finished, she looked up at Gongsun Ru’s darkening expression and waited quietly for her response.
“So, Miss Yin is saying that this princess of the West Moon Kingdom is now trapped inside the mirror?” Gongsun Ru’s brows furrowed deeply.
“Well, ‘trapped’ might not be the right word,” Mu Yin mused. “She was originally in my dreams. Later, I traveled to the past through the mirror, and she must have remained inside it at that time.”
Gongsun Ru pondered for a long while before speaking. “This is truly unexpected. Would it be possible for me to speak with Princess Ah Qin directly? Perhaps we can find a way to free her from the mirror.”
Mu Yin nodded. “The mirror belongs to the Valley of Clarity, after all. If we can get Ah Qin out, that would be for the best. Please, come with me.”
Leading Gongsun Ru back to the courtyard, Mu Yin noticed the room was eerily quiet. Si Lingqing sat in her original spot, sipping tea with apparent satisfaction except the table before her held only an empty stand, with no sign of the ancient mirror.
Still unaware of the severity of the situation, Mu Yin glanced around but didn’t see Ah Qin anywhere in the room. Puzzled, she asked, “Where’s the mirror?”
Si Lingqing set down her teacup and extended a slender finger, pointing upward.
The three of them slowly lifted their heads. There, on the roof, was a gaping hole, somehow smashed through with broken beams and shattered tiles dangling precariously, revealing the bright moonlight of the night sky.
The room fell into silence.
Mu Yin lowered her gaze and looked at Si Lingqing uncertainly. “Did you throw Ah Qin out?”
Si Lingqing raised her chin slightly and said, “She cannot stay by your side.”
Mu Yin grew anxious. “Even if Ah Qin can’t stay with me, you shouldn’t have thrown out the ancient divine mirror! It, it belongs to the Valley of Clarity!”
Mu Yin knew Si Lingqing had disliked Ah Qin from the very beginning. There had been signs of it back in the West Moon Kingdom, but she hadn’t paid much attention, thinking Si Lingqing’s temperament was just naturally eccentric and that it was normal for her to take a dislike to someone.
But now, she had thrown Ah Qin out along with the mirror!
Gongsun Ru glanced at Si Lingqing before turning to Mu Yin. “Miss Yin, that ancient mirror has been preserved in the Valley of Clarity for centuries. If it were lost under my watch, I truly wouldn’t have the face to meet my masters and senior sisters.”
Mu Yin broke into a cold sweat. “Mr. Gongsun, I’m truly sorry.”
“What use is an apology?” Gongsun Ru said. “Miss Yin, you’ve stayed in the Valley of Clarity for nearly half a year now. You should know exactly how the Valley regards that mirror. How many new disciples has it accompanied? And now, just like that, it’s been destroyed in your hands. Have you considered how the disciples of the Valley of Clarity would feel?”
“Mr. Gongsun…”
“I will not let this matter rest.”
Gongsun Ru said to Mu Yin, “It is very important to our Valley of Clarity. Now that it’s lost, your Five Skandha Sect must compensate us accordingly.”
Mu Yin’s pained expression suddenly froze, and even Hong Zhuang couldn’t help tilting her head in confusion.
Gongsun Ru remained as composed as ever as she addressed Mu Yin. “Your Five Skandha Sect wouldn’t think of reneging, would you?”
“Ah? Oh, no, of course not,” Mu Yin said. “We will naturally compensate as needed. It’s just, Mr. Gongsun, how can you be so certain we have the means to compensate?”
Gongsun Ru glanced at Si Lingqing, who had been sitting silently all this while, and calmly replied, “From the moment I first laid eyes on Miss Si, I knew she was the young mistress of the Five Skandha Sect. Though I don’t quite understand how someone who was supposed to be dead is now standing here perfectly fine. But everyone has their secrets, and I have no interest in prying into others’ private matters. I only hope Miss Yin will compensate the Valley of Clarity for the loss according to the mirror’s value.”
“Alright,” Mu Yin asked. “How should we compensate?”
“The specifics will require further discussion. I will give you an answer by tomorrow morning.”
“Very well. Then, Mr. Gongsun, please take care on your way.”
Watching Gongsun Ru come and go, Mu Yin stood at the doorway feeling utterly dazed. Hong Zhuang quietly approached her side and glanced at her before saying, “Young Madam, that mirror doesn’t seem all that important after all. Mr. Gongsun didn’t even ask us to look for it before leaving just like that.”
Mu Yin was equally puzzled. She turned to look at Hong Zhuang, then back at Si Lingqing sitting in the chair, and couldn’t help but frown.
Though Gongsun Ru had said so much earlier, when translated, it all boiled down to one thing this object was very important to the Valley of Clarity, so they had to pay up.
Who knew what price Gongsun Ru would name tomorrow morning?
And now that she knew Si Lingqing and Mu Yin’s identities, the figure was unlikely to be low.
Mu Yin walked over and nudged Si Lingqing with her foot, frowning as she questioned her, “What’s wrong with you? Why did you throw Ah Qin away for no reason? If it weren’t for you, would we have had to compensate with money?”
Si Lingqing replied, “Mere worldly possessions, what’s lost is lost.”
Mu Yin was furious. “I think you should turn back into a cat. At least when you were a coal boss, you weren’t this annoying.”
Hearing this, Si Lingqing turned her head and looked up at Mu Yin, narrowing her eyes slightly. “You think I’m annoying?”
“Yes,” Mu Yin said angrily. “Not only are you annoying, but you’re also a troublemaker. Ever since the dream in the West Moon Kingdom, you’ve had it out for Ah Qin. What exactly did she do to offend you? This time, you actually wanted to throw her away?”
Si Lingqing felt a stifling sensation in her chest, as if her qi was surging vaguely reminiscent of jealousy.
Seeing her silent, Mu Yin leaned in and said, “Turn back into a cat now!”
Si Lingqing let out a muffled grunt, then reached out and pulled Mu Yin into her arms, startling her.
“Y-you, what are you doing?!” Mu Yin’s face flushed instantly as she hurriedly turned to look at Hong Zhuang, who was still standing in the room.
Si Lingqing also glanced at Hong Zhuang, her gaze icy.
Hong Zhuang: “…”
Hong Zhuang made it clear she hadn’t provoked either of them.
“Well then, Young Madam and Eldest Miss, since the two of you have matters to discuss, I’ll take my leave first.” Hong Zhuang tactfully retreated to the door, pointing to the courtyard next door. “I’ll be in the neighboring courtyard. If you need anything, just call for me though it’d be best if you didn’t. Even if you did, I probably couldn’t help much anyway.”
With that, Hong Zhuang slammed the door shut with a bang, leaving only Mu Yin and Si Lingqing inside.
Mu Yin’s face was now completely red. She had never been spoken to like this by Hong Zhuang before and immediately tried to push Si Lingqing away, only to find the woman’s grip around her waist unyielding, her strength overwhelming.
“What do you want?” Mu Yin asked.
Si Lingqing settled Mu Yin onto her lap and looked up at her, saying, “I don’t like that woman. She has feelings for you, and you’re my wife. Was there anything wrong with me throwing her out?”
Mu Yin, blushing, looked down at her, unsure how to respond.
Si Lingqing continued, “She isn’t something within the Five Elements. I hope you won’t interact with her in the future.”
“Not within the Five Elements?” Mu Yin stared at her in confusion. “What does that mean?”
Si Lingqing gazed deeply at Mu Yin but said nothing.
Logically speaking, Mu Yin herself was also something outside the Five Elements, an abrupt soul with no cause, no past life, something that should have been eradicated. Yet Si Lingqing had never exposed this truth.
As if, so long as she didn’t speak of it, Mu Yin would remain that Mu Yin forever her wife, forever by her side.
At this thought, Si Lingqing’s eyes flickered slightly before she tightened her hold around Mu Yin’s waist and said, “Don’t worry about those things. Let’s consummate our marriage. Your yin poison also needs to be properly cleansed.”
As Si Lingqing leaned in to kiss her, Mu Yin, flustered, pushed her away and stammered, “W-w-wasn’t it already cleansed last night?”
“You’ve accumulated yin poison for half a year. How could one night be enough to cleanse it all?” Si Lingqing grasped Mu Yin’s fingers, kissed them lightly, and then smiled at her. “Calculating at a frequency of three times a month, I still owe you 17 more sessions.”
Seventeen sessions?!
Mu Yin felt her head buzzing chaotically. She tried to explain to Si Lingqing, “I-I think we don’t need to do it so often. Now that I’m back, once every ten days would be plenty, Mmm!”
Si Lingqing had no patience for Mu Yin’s meaningless chatter. She pinched the other’s chin and kissed her firmly.
Soft lips were sucked gently as Si Lingqing skillfully parted Mu Yin’s lips, their tongues intertwining. Holding Mu Yin in her arms, she could feel the slight tremble running through her body.
Si Lingqing nibbled at her lips, continuing the kiss for a full five minutes before reluctantly pulling away.
Mu Yin’s eyes were reddened, her lips slightly swollen. When she gazed at Si Lingqing with those moist eyes, she looked utterly pitiful.
The two locked eyes in silence for a moment before Si Lingqing simply smiled faintly. She lowered her head to inhale Mu Yin’s scent at the neck, then slowly left a love bite behind.
